• What's the purpose of the empty string?

  To me, as a developer and as a user, I find the empty string ("") useless and the cause of much confusion, it's like saying string == char[] Maybe computers need the empty string, so I'd like to learn why.

• Upgrading MacBookPro

  I'm using a Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an Intel i5 @ 2.4 GHz and 4 GB 1333 MHz ram. The computer has started to get older. I was going to upgrade the ram but since Mavericks come out, the ram problem just went away and now, it started to get slower and slower. So I was thinking of upgrading my ram to at least 8GB and my CPU. I have two question about that. As I have 1333Mhz rams installed by default, the motherboard should not support 1666Mhz rams. But can I use 1666 Mhz ones and if I can will it make any difference? Also is it possible to upgrade the CPU of my computer? If yes how can I find a CPU compatible with the other components?

  I am writing a java servlet (struts/JSP etc). I am trying to style a progress bar using CSS in a JSP page but get this error when using chrome's developer tools: Resource interpreted as image but transferred with MIME type text/plain. <%@ include file="../include/css/default.css" % And in the CSS file: background:url(../images/bg_bar.gif) no-repeat 0 0; Could anyone explain why this is and show how I can use this CSS in my page?

• Snow Leopard Hangs at Login Window

  I've had an issue for the past few months, but I rarely restart so it hasn't caused too much trouble. Basically, when I start up my Mac (iMac10,1 - 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.3) everything proceeds as usual until I reach the login window. The login window displays normally, but keyboard and mouse input seem to be ignored. This condition persists for around 5 minutes at which time everything goes back to normal. While the login window is frozen my second monitor appears entirely blue, the second monitor receives a background as soon as the login window becomes responsive. If I startup while holding SHIFT the problem still occurs, but the freeze is much shorter. Looking through my logs I see no activity during the time that the login window is frozen. I've attempted to repair disk permissions, and gone through every possible maintenance option in Cocktail.

  Please, have a look at: http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/base-css.html There are many examples like this one: if you look closer to the block borders, you can see that the gray block is under the white one. Using the browser's developer tools you can see that both boxes have an inherited z-index: auto; I can't reproduce this effect on my website (without using z-index). So, my question is: Why is the gray block under the white one?

• PC reboots regularly

  Windows XP RAID 5 drives Intel Dual Core processor 2 GB Ram I am running a processor temperature monitor. It does not appear to be overheating. I do not have virus. The PC freezes and reboots. I do not think it is software related, because it will reboot if it is doing nothing. Could it be the power supply? Might i need to replace it? How do I diagnose this? Is this the kind of question that is appropriate here? I am not sure.

  I have installed Visual Studio Express Web Developer 2010 and boy it really slows my system down a lot. Is there a way to identify the services like SQL Server and set them to manual so I can avoid all my memory resources been occupied when not using Visual Studio?   The setup: Windows 2008R2 Ent on two machines. The roles on each server will include File Servers and DC's. The machines come from two different vendors (Dell/HP) The Dell is an Athlon and the HP is an Intel. Both have roughly the same speed CPU and 8GB of RAM. They have different Raid controllers, and more or less the same amount of disk space (roughly 6TB.) Can the servers use different types of hardware? Is there any documentation about this? The last question I have is about the network. Can DFS-R be forced to use a differen subnet from the regular network?

  Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences

  I have my iPhone setup on my computer at home, with my developer account and provisioning profile. I'm trying to get it setup on my work computer so I can run work apps on it as well. My work has their own dev account. I created an app ID and privisioning profile on my personal account and downloaded it on my work computer but its not letting me compile and run on my iPhone. It says valid provisiong profile not found on executable.
