• Is there much difference between X86 Assembly language on Windows and Linux?

  I'm a complete beginner at Assembly, and my aim is to learn as much as I can to do with Assembly to one day I can reach expert level (I know I'm way off right now, but you never know). My only problem is this: I've got two books which both teach assembly, one on a Linux and the other on Windows. They are Jeff Duntemann's Assembly Language Step By Step (the linux one) and Introduction to 80x86 Assembly Language and Computer Architecture (the windows version). If I want to get the best out of assembly, should I do this on linux and windows? Also, is the syntax the same on Windows and Linux or will I have teach my self again when learning on the other OS( which is my main concern, I want to be able to use assembly on windows and linux).

• Software/Application needed to store and organize random content [on hold]

  I have the need to store random contents (on my local hard drive/ laptop hard drive) for personal use so I can look these contents up later on when I need them. What I mean by random content is one of the following: Some sort of code Random fact Css / html / Javascript tips Or anything I might find interesting and want to keep for future reference I want to look up these entries by tags, the software should give me the ability to associate every entry with one tag or more. I have been having difficult time find applications offer this functionality, it is like a local database with search ability and easy data-entry methods. I can build one, but I don't have the time to invest in doing so. Can you refer me to any application/software that can do that, it would be great. It does not matter if it is paid or free.

• How can I generate signed distance fields in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • Creating your own computer! [closed]

  I recently found this article on a guy that built his own computer. It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).

  You ever try to implement something simple but for some strange reason it doesn't work. So you try a possible solution but then something else doesn't work. You keep trying different workarounds but every time something different isn't working. Every time you get one step closer you also get one (or more) step farther from solving this problem and its now been 3 hours when this should have taken you 10 minutes. And it still isn't solved. There is no one in your company who can help, and you are about to put your fist through your screen. At this point you are so frustrated you can no longer think about the problem clearly. I'm working with last updated ubuntu 12.04 and gnome shell, and I wonder how I can REMOVE and I say remove not clear or avoid feeding but remove completly the "recent item" bookmark you can see in the standard save windows of gnome shell here's a picture (in french it's "Récemment utilisés"): Sorry not enought point to post image to see what I talk about, just do that: -open gedit -type anything -save your file -Now that windows got a "recent item" and I want it DOWN I cannot reward point, but I would if I could for the guy finding a solution, and a bonus point if you find a way to remove it every where it appears in gnome shell. • How do you deal with web designers who are too afraid to read and touch PHP code?

  I've been hired to make a website and am working with a designer (who happens to be the guy who is in contact with the client and hired me, so no, I can't kick his ass out =) ) who's too afraid to touch into the php code, and is too newbie in html and css to give me good enough models, so the work of today will be going through his new html model of a half-programmed page and removing s and changing classes and the such. Is there some kind of tool, or some better workflow in order to make this easier for both of us? maybe I'm dealing with this the wrong way altogether, I'm new to web development, and I don't know enough html/css (and he supposedly does) to have him just give me a graphic mock-up and do the whole thing, so what we're doing is he gives me a static html page that looks like he wants, and I put around it =) can anyone give me some advice on this?

• Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

• CNAME cross subdomain mapping problem

  I have the exact same problem as this but I don't understand the solution. I have 2 different domain name(with different hosting/provider) domain-one.com and domain-two.com which I want sub.domain-one.com to point to sub.domain-two.com using CNAME. All have been setup and propagate correctly but now when I go to sub.domain-one.com it goes to basic page of the server. If I go directly to sub.domain-two.com the page load correctly. I've tried to add the subdomain using Addon Domains on cPanel but the problem persist.

• Kubuntu 12.04: Change login screen background?

  I am having trouble changing my login screen background. I can select the default wall paper, the Kde-default one, but when ever I select my own custom wallpaper, there is no image, just a solid color. Normally, I would just ignore it, but the thing that bugs me is that this is a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 64bit, and the OS before this one, the one I overwrote, I had no trouble using the exact same image as the background... Settings In the System Settings application, Login Screen settings, Background tab, enable background, Under "Background", selected Picture, under options, selected Position: Scaled. Colors: Single Color. Blending: No Blending.

• Fake RAID (dmraid) not seeing new SATA drives

  I have three drives in my machine, one SSD with 32GB and two 1TB drives, attached to an Intel 82801JI (ICH10) SATA AHCI Controller. The problem is, that I can access only one of the 1TB drives when the other one is not plugged in. When it is plugged in I see the drives as sda and sdb, but there seem to be no partitions. Looking at these drives with cfdisk, the partitions are there, though. Both of the 1TB drives are carrying a partition, being part of a software RAID1, created with mdadm. Before I threw the SSD into the mix, the other two have been working fine. Any hints?

• Is there a way to change the root password while still logged in? I did something bad by accdient -_-

  So I was trying to add my printer, and I wasn't able to make any changes due to the fact that cups was not accepting my root password. I was Googling some changes and trying to fix the problem when one of the commands CHANGED MY SUDO PASSWORD! Can someone please tell me which one of these is the culprit? I was trying to these commands: cat /etc/group | grep root cat /etc/group | grep myUserName usermod -a -G lpadmin myUserName sudo usermod -a -G lpadmin myUserName sudo gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf lppasswd -a myUserName lppasswd -a root sudo lppasswd -a myUserName I think it was this one, but I know which passwords I put in! There was nothing which I typed in besides my strong password or my easy temporary password. Unless I made a typo... please no. restart cups sudo password root This is so not cool, I was just trying to add a printer :'( Please help my stupidity!

• BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • Intercepting the Unity logout

  I want to copy some data from another machine to a local computer on a regular basis. At the moment I'm researching different solutions and try to find the one which fits best. Basically I want to open a network connection (or use an existing one), make a VPN connection and start a rsync process. This should be done on every logout of my desktop session or on shutdown. One possible solution might be to somehow intercept the Unity shutdown and execute a script. So is there a possibility to execute a script on GNOME/Unity shutdown? I'm aware that you can do it on system shutdown. How can I do this?

• What's the best way to add some particle or laser effects to an already animated character?

  I just purchased some rigged and animated robot characters from 3drt for a game I'm making in unity. I would like to be able to add some weapon effects to the characters. For example, I would like for the robots to be able to shot lasers out of the hands at enemies. I have know idea where to even start with this task as I'm more of a programmer than a graphics guy. • Looking for a 24 Hour project for multiple languages [closed]

  Right two friends and I came up with this idea of having a 24h programming competition. Where we are going to meet at one place and program away for 24hours long. Though we need a 'project'. Something that needs to be made within 24h. Doesn't have to be a real thing, just a nice learning 'thing'. The rules that we setup for ourselves is that the project can be programmed in any language of our own choice. What I know is that one guy is a PHP enthousiastic, we've got a C#/.NET person. And I am quite easy in languages and speak quite a few (PHP/C#.net/C++STL/Python/JavaScript/Java). Anything really language specific is out of the question. Is there anyone who happens to have a great idea for this?

• Is deserializing complex objects instead of creating them a good idea, in test setup?

  I'm writing tests for a component that takes very complex objects as input. These tests are mixes of tests against already existing components, and test-first tests for new features. Instead of re-creating my input objects (this would be a large chunk of code) or reading one from our data store, I had the thought to serialize a live instance of one of these objects, and just deserialize it into test setup. I can't decide if this is a reasonable idea that will save effort in long run, or whether it's the worst idea that I've ever had, causing those that will maintain this code will hunt me down as soon as they read it. Is deserialization of inputs a valid means of test setup in some cases? To give a sense of scale of what I'm dealing with, the size of serialization output for one of these input objects is 93KB. • Someone erased the mac os x with ubuntu, how do i get it back?

  so for a further detail about this, my friend has a macbook pro thats all i know about it specfically aside from the fact it was running os x lion. before this guy got a hold of the computer that he knows, I could hit the command key and the R key to get to the disk utilities and what-not to install OS X Lion on it, but now since whomever my friend let touch th mac, i no longer and do any of the start-up keys for it.. I've been trying to geth the mac os x lion on there and im having no luck what-so-ever, if anyone could help me with this i would be greatly appreciative... if you need anymore info that i may be able to provide please feel free to ask. thank you again.

• Unity environment way too slow in Ubuntu 13.10

  Unity and its apps open too slowly whenever I open one. It takes a while for them to appear completely. Everything works properly when the window is already open. The biggest problem is with the dash: it's SO SLOW when I'm looking for an app although I have removed some lenses. What should I do or what can I do? These issues only occur with Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 whereas 12.04 works AMAZNGLY but I have issues when updating a package or installing a new one, that's why I don't opt for that one. Specifications: RAM: 2GB, Processor: Intel® Atom™ CPU N2600 @ 1.60GHz × 4, Graphics card: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits)
