• Login takes very long, annoying repaints once a minute when logged in: How to troubleshoot?

  I am suffering from a strange problem with my Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 12.10. The login takes very long ( 30 sec), with a blank screen. In Google Chrome and Thunderbird (and perhaps in other applications), the main window freezes and is repainted in periodic intervals of less than one minute. The freeze takes several seconds, and it seems that font and appearance of, e.g., tabs and buttons briefly changes. Attempting to enable the second monitor show an error message related to XRANDR. Everything seems to have started three days ago, after I had to force-shutdown the machine while it was hibernating due to low power. (It was hibernating for quite a while and didn't want to stop.) Silly me. I have tried the following measures, with no avail: Checked all package file md5 hashes using debsums Reinstalled all packages using a variant of dpkg --get-selection \* | xargs apt-get install -reinstall Temporarily moved configuration directories such as .gconf, .config and .gnome2 to another location Created a new user account When I choose "Ubuntu" during login, the problems disappear. I am sort of frustrated that reinstalling all packages didn't fix the issue. How to troubleshoot this Gnome Shell (?) problem, short of reinstalling the system? (Or did anyone see this kind of behavior on their machine?)

• Do you have to recreate workspaces after upgrading a TFS 2008 server to TFS 2010?

  I am just reposting this thread from a MSDN forum since it seems to be unavailable. It was very useful when I was having trouble with my folder mappings after migrating to TFS 2010. Question: I opened VS2008 and connected it to the upgraded 2010 TFS server.  Upon clicking any of our Team Projects in source control explorer I get "Team Foundation Error - The workspace MYWORKSPACE;DOMAIN\MYUsername already exists on computer MYPCNAME." Answer: The same local paths on your machine are mapped to 2 different workspaces, one on the preupgrade server and one on the postupgrade server.  It's not safe to have multiple workspaces on different servers mapped to the same local paths b/c you could pend some changes while connected to one server, and the other server would have no idea what you did.  You should either delete your conflicting workspaces from one of the servers (if you don't need them on both), or test the new TFS instance from a new workspace (on different machine). If you want to test an existing production workspace on both servers, then yes, you will have to mess around with the workspace cache. You don’t have to delete the entire cache, you just need to run "tf workspaces /remove:* /server:<serverurl>" to clear the cached workspaces from a server (the command won't delete the workspaces), and possibly "tf workspaces /server:<server>" to refresh the workspace cache for a given server.  You will also have to do back up and restore the workspace before switching servers or your local files could be inconsistent. • What will be the better way for data retrieval on application that needs to handle limited amount of data?

  Just moved this question from Stack Overflow. Since, adding my code snippets itself would make this question really long. Instead, I am pretty interested in knowing a better ways for data retrieval on application that needs to handle limited amount of data which isn't updated regularly. Let's take this example: I am writing an application which gets a schedule as an XML from server. I have written a logic in order to parse XML version and update database only if the version is newer than the local version. Although the update is checked automatically/manually on daily basis based on user preference, the actual version update happens only once per few months or so. Since, this is done by some other authority which doesn't provide API but, rather inform publicly on their changes. The actual XML contains a "(n number of groups)(days in a week) (n number of schedule)" . The group is usually 6 and the number of schedule is usually 2. So basically there would usually be only around 100 strings. Now although I have used SQLite at the moment. I want to know how to make update on database. Should I show progress dialog that the application is updating and exit the app when it's done? Since, my updates are infrequent i don't think this will really harm user experience but, is there any better ways to do it? Because I don't want update to be made when user is searching which is done using database. This will cause an database already open exception. At least I have faced this problem before. Is it better to rather parse XML every time when user wants to view certain things or to use SQLite? Since, I make lots of use of adapter in my app to create lists, will that degrade the performance?

• Leadership Tip&ndash;Vent Up!

  Leadership is difficult, for many reasons. One of those reasons is that we not only need to keep ourselves motivated when difficult or challenging times come, but we also need to motivate our teams and keep them focussed on the tasks at hand regardless of the mortars being rained down around them. Inexperienced (and experienced) leaders can fall into the “me-too” mentality – that is, the leader sees themselves as part of the team member instead of the leader of the team. Once a leader changes the teams view that he/she is a peer and not the leader, dynamics can change on the team. One of the biggest dangers is that the leader starts sharing frustrations, fears, concerns, etc. with the team that they’re supposed to be leading on to victory. This can destroy a team’s morale and productivity. One simple thing you can do to counter this is remember this rule when it comes to venting: Vent Up! Don’t vent sideways or down, vent up. Vent to the people above you – they’re the ones that tend to have the power to actually change things anyway. You as a leader stay healthy by getting your frustrations and concerns off your chest, your team is still insulated from it, and your superiors are aware of issues that need to be addressed or can coach you through the obstacles.   MySQL Community team asked me to write about Devconf 2013 few months ago. Conference was in June, 2013, but I remembered about this my promise only now: month later after my participating in MySQL Connect and Expert Troubleshooting seminar (change country to United Kingdom if you see blank page). I think it is too late for the feedback, but I still have few thoughts which I want to record.DevConf (former PHPConf) always was a place where I tried new topics. At first, because I know audience there very well and they will be bored if I repeat a story which I was telling last year, but also because it is much easier to get feedback in your own native language. But last years my habit seems started to change and I presented improved version of my 2012 MySQL Connect talk about MySQL backups. Of course, I also had a seminar with unique topic, made for this conference first time: Troubleshooting MySQL Performance with EXPLAIN and Using Performance Schema to Troubleshoot MySQL. And these topics, improved, were presented at the expert seminar. It is interesting how my habit changes and one public speaking activity interferes next one.What is good about DevConf is it forces you to create new ideas and do it really well, because audience is not forgiving at all, so they catch everything you miss or prepared not good enough. This can be bad if you want to make a marketing-style topic for free, but allows to present technical features in really good details: all these sudden discussions really help.In year 2013 Oracle had a booth at the conference and was presented by a bunch of people. Dmitry Lenev presented topic "New features of replication in MySQL 5.6" and Victoria Reznichenko worked on the booth. What was new at the conference this year is greater interest in NoSQL, scale and fast development solutions. This, unfortunately, means not so huge interest in MySQL as it was earlier. However, at the same time, "Common" track was really MySQL track: not only Oracle, but people from other companies presented about it.

  the domain: is foo.bar.local full hostname is: bla.foo.bar.local short hostname is: bla I installed winbind. here is my smb.conf: name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast here is my nsswitch.conf: hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns wins mdns4 when I try to ping full hostname, I get: "ping: unknown host" when I ping short hostname it works and shows me PING bla.foo.bar.local (10.11.20.135) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from bla.foo.bar.local (10.11.20.135): icmp_req=1 ttl=62 time=49.7 ms *notice that it manages to get the full hostname!? :S now the only reason I need it is cuz I'm trying to reach intranet websites. when I type short hostname "bla" in firefox address bar, it automatically changes it to the full hostname (which is good, right?!) but then it says: Server not found Firefox can't find the server at bla.foo.bar.local. what am I doing wrong? it's driving me nutz. so if you are wandering then yes, it is company intranet I'm trying to reach from ubuntu. If I use my crappy winxp everything is working perfectly well.

• Resource Acquisition is Initialization in C#

  Resource Acquisition Is Initialization (RAII) is a pattern I grew to love when working in C++.  It is perfectly suited for resource management such as matching all those pesky new's and delete's.  One of my goals was to limit the explicit deallocation statements I had to write.  Often these statements became victims of run-time control flow changes (i.e. exceptions, unhappy path) or development-time code refactoring. The beauty of RAII is realized by tying your resource creation (acquisition) to the construction (initialization) of a class instance.  Then bind the resource deallocation to the destruction of that instance.  That is well and good in a language with strong destructor semantics like C++, but languages like C# that run on garbage-collecting runtimes don't provide the same instance lifetime guarantees. • Are there any good examples of open source C# projects with a large number of refactorings?

  I'm doing research into software evolution and C#/.NET, specifically on identifying refactorings from changesets, so I'm looking for a suitable (XP-like) project that may serve as a test subject for extracting refactorings from version control history. Which open source C# projects have undergone large (number of) refactorings? Criteria A suitable project has its change history publicly available, has compilable code at most commits and at least several refactorings applied in the past. It does not have to be well-known, and the code quality or number of bugs is irrelevant. Preferably the code is in a Git or SVN repository. The result of this research will be a tool that automatically creates informative, concise comments for a changeset. This should improve on the common development practice of just not leaving any comments at all. EDIT: As Peter argues, ideally all commit comments would be teleological (goal-oriented). Practically, if a comment is made at all it is often descriptive, merely a summary of the changes. Sadly we're a long way from automatically inferring developer intentions!

• Interesting fault attempting to install Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 OR 13.10 on MSI GS70 2OD-001US

  Attempting to install Ubuntu on an MSI GS70 2OD-001US notebook pre-installed with Windows 8. For the record this is what I have attempted: All cases were attempted with Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 AND 13.10 images via USB drives Case 1 - Attempt no changes and simply boot from USB Result: It seems to want to work initially. The Ubuntu logo pops up and the dots start moving. After a few seconds the dots freeze and this screen is shown: http://i.imgur.com/C7pyMRk.jpg Case 2 - Start playing with BIOS - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - In BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting LEGACY Result: Brought to a black screen with a - blinking at me. Case 3 - Alternating BIOS settings - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - in BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting UEFI with CSM Result: Brought to a black screen no other indication of change. It's pretty frustrating to feel locked out of a laptop that I have paid good money for, I'm sure I am not alone in that case. It does however appear that there has been some success, so I am hopeful that someone might be able to help me. FYI: Dual booting is not necessary for me, if that helps at all... I'm not sure if this is a reasonable option, but if I completely wipe clean the hdds, no particle of Windows at all, would this still be a problem? Also would opening up the laptop and replacing the HDDS with brand new ones be a solution as well? Thanks for any input or suggestions.

• Can I fine-tune my screen brightness? (Ubuntu Studio, Thinkpad T420s)

  I am in a similar situation as question Can I fine-tune my screen brightness? . For me, Thinkpad T420s and Ubuntu Studio 11.10. The brightness keys work fine but the increments are too large. I have the /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 and I can see the value of actual_brightness changing as I use the brightness keys - it changes between values 0,3,6,9,12,15. None of the listed answers for fine control works here, as follows: As the root user I can echo integers to brightness in the above folder. As an ordinary user I cannot. I do not have /usr/sbin/gnome-power-backlight-helper (because I'm using xfce perhaps?), and not sure what package it's from or if installing such a package would make sense since it's not what's currently managing the backlight. How can it be done, please?

• Depending on fixed version of a library and ignore its updates

  I was talking to a technical boss yesterday. Its about a project in C++ that depends on opencv and he wanted to include a specific opencv version into the svn and keep using this version ignoring any updates which I disagreed with.We had a heated discussion about that. His arguments: Everything has to be delivered into one package and we can't ask the client to install external libraries. We depend on a fixed version so that new updates of opencv won't screw our code. We can't guarantee that within a version update, ex from 3.2.buildx to 3.2.buildy. Buildy the function signatures won't change. My arguments: True everything has to be delivered to the client as one package,but that's what build scripts are for. They download the external libraries and create a bundle. Within updates of the same version 3.2.buildx to 3.2.buildy its impossible that a signature change, unless it is a really crappy framework, which isn't the case with opencv. We deprive ourselves from new updates and features of that library. If there's a bug in the version we took, and even if there's a bug fix later, we won't be able to get that fix. Its simply ineffiecient and anti design to depend on a certain version/build of an external library as it makes our project difficult in the future to adopt to new changes. So I'd like to know what you guys think. Does it really make sense to include a specific version of external library in our svn and keep using it ignoring all updates?

• Basic Puppet installation with Solaris 11.2 beta

  At the recent announcement we talked a lot about the Puppet integration. But how do you set it up? I want to show this in this blog entry. However this example i'm using is even useful in practice. Due to the extremely low overhead of zones i'm frequently seeing really large numbers of zones on a single system. Changing /etc/hosts or changing an SMF service property on 3 systems is not that hard. Doing it on a system with 500 zones is ... let say it diplomatic ... a job you give to someone you want to punish. Puppet can help in this case making of managing the configuration and to ease the distribution. You describe the changes you want to make in a file or set of file called manifest in the Puppet world and then roll them out to your servers, no matter if they are virtual or physical. A warning at first: Puppet is a really,really vast topic. This article is really basic and it doesn't goes more than just even toe's deep into the possibilities and capabilities of Puppet. It doesn't try to explain Puppet ... just how you get it up and running and do basic tests. There are many good books on Puppet. Please read one of them, and the concepts and the example will get much clearer immediately. (more)

• How to adjust the shooting angle of an object

  I've been trying to add an angle adjustment feature to a power bar that I got from unity3dStudents. But I can't seem to get the code right. I'm using addforce to rigidbody, it works but the power is too great. I also found that rotating the object it's shooting from changes the angle. But I don't know how to proceed from that. Can somebody show me the problem with the script below, as in how to add height to the addforce without it going to far up or to the side? • Synckolab will not start automatically

  We have a Kolab server for e-mail, calendar and contacts with Thunderbird for a client. The add-ons are Lightning and Synckolab. The workstations are Kubuntu, most 10.04, some 11.10. It basically works but for one nagging problem: the automatic sync (that is, the settings that starts Synckolab upon start of Thunderbird and every x minutes as per setting) does not fire. We went through the whole routine: setting it, setting it to zero and back to any number of minutes, stopping/starting Thunderbird or the entire computer to make sure it sees and sets it. In the configuration console is reflects the changes. But still it will not automatically fire Synckolab. Manual syncs work without any problem (none that we've seen - it reflects all the added, changed etc calendar events). In short: Synckolab does not fire automatically with any setting who have thought of.

• Moving Windows 7 ProgramData folder after installation

  I need to move my C:\ProgramData folder in a Windows 7 installation to D:\ProgramData. I understand how to make the symlinks and registry changes so this works. My problem is that I'm unable to copy the files in the ProgramData folder because the OS seems to have some of them locked. Specifically, the files in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys folder are blocking the move. Am I out of luck here? Is there any way to move the folder, create the symlink, and update the registry without any of the files in these folders being locked?

• Sharepoint 2010 reacts very badly to having it's IP address changed. How do I fix it?

  I have Sharepoint 2010 set up on a virtual host for prototyping various projects. If I restart the host, the IP changes. Afterwards, SP complains that it can't find it's configuration database. I can't find where it might be storing an IP. To clarify, the URL remains the same - I have a dynamic dns solution in place to handle that. I can't see anything in the web.config files or the database connection strings that would indicate a hardcoded IP. How can I fix this up in less time than re-installing every time I need to do a project?

• Shuttle FB51 mobo does not boot with external USB drive attached [closed]

  I am repurposing an old Alienware desktop as a home media server. The PC is based on the Shuttle FB51 motherboard. The BIOS is a Phoenix Version 6.00 PG, release date 12/16/2002. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the internal hard drive. I am using a Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for media storage. When the external drive is plugged in and the PC is powered on, it freezes very early in the BIOS self-test, even before it begins the memory test. If I unplug the drive, the self-test proceeds without further problems. I can plug the USB drive back in when the self-test is complete, and Ubuntu will boot and find the external drive normally. I've tried several changes to the BIOS setup without finding a cure for the boot issue. Any assistance gratefully accepted. JGB

• Stereo Mix does not work

  Stereo Mix no longer seems to work on my computer -- it did once, but now I am unable to receive any sort of audio from it. When trying to record it with programs such as Audacity, it reports that there is an error opening the sound device. Additionally, I can make no changes whatsoever to Stereo Mix, such as with regards to default format, where it simply reports Format not supported by device. I am sure that Stereo Mix had definitely worked in the past, so does anyone have any idea as to why Stereo Mix would suddenly break? (I have no applications taking exclusive control of Stereo Mix)

• Windows 7 Pro - "domain" like login screen appeared

  I'm setting up a new PC with the Windows 7 Pro. After some actions (software installing, config changes, applying updates ), my login screen looks like the PC is connected to the domain: I have checked the settings and everywhere the "workgroup" is checked. I have been googling for three hours trying some solutions (Control UserPasswords2, regedit and the ".DEFAULT" key) but nothing works. I cannot see the user icons - only the login screen as above. I cannot also change the account icon. Has anybody seen such an issue?

• Is it possible to host a web server from behind a NAT

  My PC is behind a NAT router that has a public IP address. If I want to host a website then I believe I need a domain name which I can purchase from some site which would pledge to resolve all DNS requests for that domain name and send the IP address of my NAT router (assuming I do not want to host my domain name on their servers). Now I want to host a web server on my computer. What changes should be done to the NAT router's configuration to forward all HTTP requests for example.com to my PC in the internal network. Is the above strategy correct? Is it commonly used?

  I have a small office network basically like below, there are more router/pc connected in S1. As you can see, the router is doing job of DHCP, DNS. but now I wish to add a Linux server between R1 and S1, So I can monitor the network traffic and do other more advance server admin stuff. the whole office network is 192.168.1.x and people are using their computer everyday. What network configuration should the new Linux server have (both interfaces) in order to minimize the changes need in the network? tried to change R1 ip to 192.168.100.1 them add the server with FE0/0 192.168.100.1 and FE0/1 192.168.1.1 but looks cannot ping the original Router..

• Windows 7 random black screen when idle

  Occasionally, when I'm away from my computer for about 5 minutes, the computer screen will go black and all USB devices (keyboard/mouse) will lose power. Attempting to move the mouse or pressing keys does not 'wake up' the computer. This only started happening a few days ago but I'm not sure what changes I did could have caused this and I uninstalled programs (one by one) I installed before it started happening, but still having the same issue. The one thing I noticed different about my computer since it started happening is i've been getting random survey popups from www.insightexpress.com. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials scan, it picked up some Java related malware, I removed it but still the same issue. I'm running MBAM right now and will run SAS after. Edit: I just updated drivers for motherboard and video card and ran virus scans, still having the same issue.

• Smoothing rotation

  I've spent the last three days trying to work out how to rotate a sprite smoothly depending on the velocity.x value of the sprite. I'm using this: float Proportion = 9.5; float maxDiff = 200; float rotation = fmaxf(fminf(playerVelocity.x * Proportion, maxDiff), -maxDiff); player.rotation = rotation; The behaviour is what I required but if the velocity changes rapidly then it will look like the sprite will jump to face left or jump to face right. I'll go into the behaviour in a little more detail: 0 velocity = sprite faces forwards negative velocity = sprite faces left depending on value. positive velocity = sprite faces right (higher velocity the more it faces right) same as above. I've read about using interpolation rather than an absolute angle to rotate it to but I don't know how to implement that. I have a physics engine available. There is one other way to get around this: to use += on the rotation angle. The thing is that I would then have to change the equation to produce positive and negative values then to make sure the sprite faces 0 once it reaches 0 velocity again. If I add that in now, it keeps the previous angle even after the velocity has dropped / is dropping. Any ideas/code snippets would be greatly appreciated.
