• Protecting PHP packages on server

  Hi, I am a php developer and have recently decided to make one of my Magento extensions commercial. I have downloaded and configured MageParts CEM Server and that is all working perfectly in regard to licencing and delivery of module packages. The only issue is that the directory that the packages are stored in could be accessed by anyone. I tried this in a .htaccess file, but now it is not working. <Files services.wsdl> allow from all </Files> deny from all Clients are receiving a 403 Forbidden response. Have I done something wrong in the .htaccess file or would there be a better way to secure the directory? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• My Tablet PC has a jog dial (typically used for scrolling up and down) but it does not work by defau

  I have an HP Compaq TC4400 and I recently was able to make most of the Tablet PC functions work in Ubuntu 9.10. (The step-by-step guide can be found in my blog.) Unfortunately I have yet to make the jog dial work. This would be particularly useful for scrolling up and down websites and documents when the TC4400 is in slate mode (with no access to the keyboard). I would be much obliged if anybody could tell me: How to find out the input button/key assignment that Ubuntu 9.10 has for jog-up and jog-down; How to assign jog-up to scroll up (D-pad key UP, or PAGE UP) and jog-down to scroll down (D-Pad key DOWN, or PAGE DOWN). I am using xbindkeys to assign different shortcuts to the quick launch buttons, perhaps I could use the same program for the jog dial? I would have done that, except I do not know how to find the proper button/key assignment for xbindkeys to use. Thanks in advance!

  I am really new to the whole concept of Data storage, Domain, Server and everything else related to this. Can someone pleases explain what a Domain is? How are server part of the Domain and How are Database stored in the Server or Domain? How does a new server be able to connect to existing database server to get all the data needed. I tried to find this information in the web but I am not really finding a good resource. It may be because these is really basic information. I will really appreciate if someone can explain these concept in plain terms. Thanks in advance.

• Location Services are always disabled in Mac OS X Lion

  A simple location services program was working fine on my machine and suddenly stopped working. Upon further exploring the problem, I realized that some process has disabled location services in System Preferences » Security & Privacy » Privacy. I checked Enable Location Services, but again it got disabled automatically. After some research I found that it's not just my program, even built-in system functions are also failing because of this problem for example System Preferences » Date & Time » Time Zone failed to get the current location. • Check IMAP via PHP for mesages in order to interact with them via PHP?

  I use Google to administer my e-mails and I run Nginx + PHP. If I want to check incoming mail to interact with each message subject (to trigger an action), as far as I know, I have only two options: 1) access Google via IMAP PHP / cron job or 2) forward the messages to my server where I can have a subdomain set to pipe the messages to a PHP script. Frankly, I'd preffer the first option because I have already all the IMAP functions tested and done. And if the second solution is really the best, I'd preffer to use Postfix. However, id like some light grom somebody who has already browsed this unknown waters. Thank you.

• How to store 250TB of data and develop a backup/recovery plan?

  I'm really new to this topic, so big apology for stupid questions. I have a school project and I want to know how to store 250TB of data with life-cycle for 18 months. It means every record is stored for 18 months and after this period of time can be deleted. There are 2 issues: store data backup data Due to amount of data I will probably need to combine data tapes and hard drives. I'd like to have "fast" access to 3 month old data, so ~42TB on disk. I really don't know what RAID should I use, or is here any better solution than combining disk and data tapes? Thanks for any advice, article, anything. I'm getting lost.

• trouble with internet connection - slow to open web pages if they open at all until I put VPN on and then they open ok

  I am having problems with my internet connection. At the moment I am on a mac and connected through a netgear wireless router. The internet connection either won't open a webpage at all or if it does it takes ages. However if I turn my VPN on the pages open at a normal speed. Also skype functions OK and I seem to be able to download files ok. I have tried connecting with a wire between the router and the computer and it makes no difference.

I have installed oracle 10g trail version in my system(E drive),created one database with my name(database:-nagaraju),in that created tables, prodecures ,functions ,sequences etc for my project. Due to some sudden problem,i formatted my machine C drive,now iam not ablle to open my database, i need all procedures ,tables which i created in that. Now I newly installed oracle10g again in another folder,how can i copy my old database into my inew installation database. Or can i copy the script of procedures so that ican run in new database. I have all data in Oradata folder,like DBF files etc. Could you please help me, how to do that?

• Dynamically loading chef recipies from URLs

  I'm deploying a web app on AWS. I intend to use chef to build AMIs which I'll then put into production. I want to have Chef monitor a URL stored in simpleDB. The URL would point to a tarball in S3. There would be different URLs, one for a config tarball, one for a code tarball. When I update the URL in simpleDB, I want chef to spot this and pull in and apply the configs/deploy the code. Is this possible? Has anything like this been done before or would I need to roll my own code? I think Chef can monitor URLs, but how would be the best way of getting it to load that URL from simpleDB?

What I need to do: Manage 3 repos: unstable, testing, stable Self-service functions that let users add/remove/promote packages (promote means moving a package unstable?testing or testing-stable). ACLs that control which users/groups may add/remove/promote packages. Automatically re-sign packages as they move repo to repo (since the GPG key for "stable" should be different than "unstable") Automatically run "createrepo" to update repodata when needed. • Why does iChat Server keep connecting to proxy.eu.jabber.org?

  I have OS X Server 10.6.5 running on a new Mac Mini (server model), serving several functions among which is iChat Server (iChat and Pidgin on Windows as clients). In the iChat log in Server Admin, I kept seeing entries about connecting to proxy.eu.jabber.org. It's for our office network and I wasn't excited about external access to it, so I disabled server-to-server XMPP federation and now the connections just time out. But why is it doing that in the first place? Sample log entry: (datetime) (servername)jabberd/resolver[portnum]: [xmpp-server._tcp.proxy.eu.jabber.org resolved to 208.68.163.220:5269 (300 seconds to live) then: sending dialback auth request for route '(full server hostname)/proxy.eu.jabber.org' A couple minutes later, it comes back with: dialback for outgoing route '(full server hostname)/proxy.eu.jabber.org' timed out

  If I want to send someone a piece of my screen this is what I currently do: PrtScr or Alt+PrtScr Open Paint.NET Paste the screen shot Make a selection Crop image to selection Save image to some location - and remember it! Go to some image hosting site (there are plenty of them in the days of Twitter) Click their "Browse" button Browse for the image if I happened to remember the location where I stored it :) Upload the image and obtain the link which I can share This is simply too many steps. I don't usually mind doing steps 1 to 5 but especially steps 6 and 9 are annoying. Jing is pretty close to what I'm looking for but I find their horrible URLs unbearable. If there was something with similar functionality but better or pluggable hosting, that would be great.

  I've recently read that the data that you deleted in windows using shift+del doesn't actually get deleted it is just made to be overwritable by other data that will soon be stored in your hard drive. And just marked as deleted. And there are some articles like this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15037/use-an-ubuntu-live-cd-to-securely-wipe-your-pcs-hard-drive/ that shows how to completely wipe out the hard drive of all the data. And thus the data can't be recovered even by the most advanced software for recovering deleted data. Now my question is, does spyware, virus or other harmful really are lost forever if you reformat your drive?

• organizing images by resolution with batch files

  Doing some digging I'm trying to figure out a command line solution for organizing very large archives of images based on their resolution into folders, 1920x1080, 1600x1200, 1600x900, etc. I've come across a few post on Superuser mentioning something called ImageMagick, is that the best method to the madness I'm trying to accomplish? I've never used any command line functions/applets/tools other then those that come from Microsoft. I'm rather new to command line usage but ive been enjoying the hell out of it using Powershell, xcopy and robocopy. I am slowly trying to push myself further into the Linux world with Ubuntu running on one of my physical machines as well as a virtual machine so that's an option as well.

• Best way to convert from IMAP to POP3?

  At work, I connect to a corporate Exchange server via IMAP and Thunderbird 3. Over the course of a year or so, I've created quite a few folders on the server and have a lot of mail stored there. I'm hitting the storage limit of my mail account and want to convert to pulling mail down to my local box (running Linux) via POP3. I know that polling mail will only get mail in INBOX, but I'm wondering if there are solutions out there that could be used to pull mail from the other folders as well, or am I doomed to moving mail into the inbox manually and polling over and over again?

• How can I refresh a document I have open in Excel in read-only mode?

  I have an Excel document that is stored on a SharePoint Server, which I always have open on my computer in read-only mode because I need to refer to it. Every so often, in order to get the latest changes, I have to close down the file and reload it again. Are there any options within Excel 2007 which allow me to simply refresh a document I have open in read-only mode to the latest version on the server? Better still, is there a way where this could be done dynamically, without me having to hit refresh?

• Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server?   I have a central server where I stored all the private ssh keys to the different machines that I want to ssh to. Currently, only sysadmins have access to this 'central' server. Given the above scenario, I like to ask the following questions: How do you protect your private ssh keys? I read about ssh-agent but I am not sure how to use it or if it can be used in this situation. If a sysadmin leaves and he copies all the private ssh keys, then he has access to all the servers. How do you deal with this situation?

• How to batch rename files copied from OSX to Windows with ':' in filenames?

  This is really puzzling. I have lots of videos that were stored using Mac OS, and now I have to edit them on Windows XP. I copied files using HFSExplorer. Editing software refuses to open the files with their current names, and so far I have not found a way to batch rename all the files. Names of the files look like this: clip-2009-10-01 21;26;00.mov But I suspect in OSX the time was 21:26:00. I would like to replace the space with an underscore, and semicolons with dash. I've tried several bulk rename applications, with ; and :, but in vain. Also I've tried rename.pl, but also in vain.

• Rsync plugin to many local wordpress installs via script or cli

  I am maintaining a large number of wordpress installs on a production server, and we are looking to deploy InfiniteWP for managing these installs. I am looking for a way to script the distribution of the plugin folder to all of these installs. On server wp-prod, all sites are stored in /srv//site/ The plugin needs to be copied from ~/iws-plugin to /srv//site/wp-content/plugins/ Here's some pseudo code to explain what I need to do: array dirs = <all folders in /srv> for each d in dirs if exits "/srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins" rsync -avzh --log-file=~/d.log ~/plugin_base_folder /srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins/ else touch d.log echo 'plugin folder for "d" not found' >> ~/d.log end end I just don't know how to make it happen from the cli or via bash. I can (and will) tinker with a bash or ruby script on my test server, but I'm thinking the command-line-fu here on SF is strong enough to handle this issue much more quickly than I can hack together a solution.   EDIT:Just rephrasing the question: Does anyone know how to mute the mic using autohotkey? Here's why I need it: Whenever someone walks in my office I have to pause the media player. Sometimes, when I'm watching a video, I also have to mute the headphone speakers. And if I'm on a skype call I have to mute the mic. I want to assign all those functions to a single hotkey for convienience (probably the "mute" or "play/pause" key) and I'm pretty sure autohotkey can do that, but I don't know how to mute the mic using autohotkey. Plus, I also want to assign all reverse commands (play and unmute) to a single key (could be a different one or the same one). (I don't think it matters, but I'm using windows 7)

  My server performance is poor. At times SSH, top, and other features or commands are very slow to respond, taking several seconds or more. A query that normally takes 5 minutes can sometimes take 30 minutes. The database is mostly being used to do a spatial query (grid and summarize) on approximately 500GB of stored data spread between 4 tables. Restarting the server works as a temporary fix, but cannot be used as a long term solution. Any suggestions for how to diagnose and solve my performance issues?
