• Get countries within range of LAT/LONG coordinates

  Trouble! I'm looking for a way to find the countries within a given range of LAT/LONG coordinates. E.g.: When viewing a place in Africa in Google Maps, I get out which countries that are in my current view. This is a bit ambitious, and I think the main problem will be dealing with accuracy of the needed polygons. The accuracy of these don't need to be all that great, the borders can probably be tens of miles off, or even more. This will be needed for the entire world.

  I am trying to pass some JavaScript variables that I have assigned to form variables into a query string used by a jQuery plug in called fancybox. • Build turns partially transparent image pixels black

  I'm very new to C# and I've run into a problem and haven't been able to solve it. I have a row of buttons that have .png images assigned to them. The images are in .png format to allow transparency, and smoothing the edges in GIMP leaves some semi-transparent pixels. I've set the Image List Toolbar (imglToolbar)'s properties to recognize "Transparent" as the designated color to show up as transparent. I'm working in Visual Studio 2005. The strange thing is that everything looks great when I'm viewing the Visual C# form preview window. The icons look exactly as they should. However, once I actually build the project, the buttons treat every semi-transparent pixel near the edge of the image as if it's black. Instead of retrieving the entire table, I am retrieving only one record using the following statement :- select * from Products where ProductID=3 Now I wanted to update dataset directly in to DB by using following statements (DAP 4.1) db.UpdateDataSet(ds, ds.Tables[0].TableName, null, cmdupdate, null, UpdateBehavior.Standard); Questions Can I Retrieve only one row from DB while a lot of other records are there and update back using Adapter update? ( In other words, I am not selecting all records from table) I am using Data Application Block 4.1? It will work there right? If anyone can give example for update will be great ( with Procedures). • How do I make an About window the front-most window in a Cocoa application with no UI?

  I'm building a Cocoa application that runs as an item in the status bar. This application has an About window and an item to activate that about window, using the standard Cocoa mechanism for doing so (-[NSApplication orderFrontStandardAboutPanel:]). Naturally this is all hooked up automagically. It works great except for one thing: unlike most About windows, it shows up underneath all other windows, rather than on top. I believe this is because the application does not have a UI, so all its windows are automatically beneath other windows. Is there a way I can hook into the NSApplication mechanism for displaying the About window so I can send it to the front? I've poked around in the docs for NSApplication, but there's no way to get a reference to the About window that I can see so that I can make it appear on top.

• how do i use htaccess to make http requests work properly

  I currently have css and javascript file calls (amongst other things) like the following: href="/css/default.css" src="/js/ui_control.js" putting the preceding / in to make the files relative to the root. This works great when my page is in the root of the domain. However, I'm currently in the middle of transferring my site to a new hosting provider and as such have a temporary URL which is: HOST-IP/~username As such, all file calls are trying to be called from HOST-IP/css/default.css etc instead of within the ~username sub-folder. Of course I can wait until the domain name servers propagate but that's beside the point. How would I go about writing a rule in the .htaccess file that would redirect all file calls that start with a /, from going to HOST-IP/FILE-CALL, and instead to go to HOST-IP/~USERNAME/FILE-CALL. ? Any ideas?

• Microsoft learning support for VS2010

  OK, I am a big fan of WPF, and while it is large area to fully understand, Microsoft has been great in posting loads of training video at http://windowsclient.net/learn/videos_wpf.aspx However with the release of 2010 it all seams to have gone very quiet. I expected a lot of the support to be updated for 2010 and I also expected a lot of new videos on the best way to use the new features in 2010. Currently I find myself working through videos based on 2008 (or even 2005) and trying to apply them to 2010. Don't get me wrong it not that I mind doing this, it just that I fear I may be learning methods which have better or different solutions in 2010. It is just me expecting too much of Microsoft, or have I missed out on a new website?

• Good code visualization / refactoring tools for C++?

  I've found myself coming across a lot of reasonably large, complicated codebases at work recently which I've been asked to either review or refactor or both. This can be extremely time consuming when the code is highly concurrent, makes heavy use of templates (particularly static polymorphism) and has logic that depends on callbacks/signals/condition variables/etc. Are there any good visualization tools for C++ period, and of those are there any that actually play well with "advanced" C++ features? Anything would probably be better than my approach now, which is basically pen+paper or stepping through the debugger. The debugger method can be good for following a particular code path, but isn't great for seeing the big picture you really need when doing serious refactoring. EDIT: I should mention that Visual Studio plugins aren't going to be a lot of help to me, since our stuff is mostly Linux-only.

• Is there such a thing as a dektop application event aggregator, similar to that used in Prism?

  The event aggregator in Prism is great, and allows loosely coupled communication between modules within a composite application. Does such a thing exist that allows the same thing to happen between standalone applications running on a user's desktop? I could imagine developing a solution that uses WCF with TCP binding and running inside Windows Process Activation Service. Client applications could subscribe or publish events to this service as required and it would ensure all other listeners get notified of events as appropriate. Using TCP would enable event messages to be pushed out to clients without the need for polling, ensuring messages are delivered very quickly. I can't help but think though that such a thing would already exist... Is anyone aware of something like this, or have any advice on how it may be best implemented?

  My question is somewhat similar to this one. We want to know if there's a way to determine if all javascript has completed (so no javascript is running). We have a lot of stuff that runs on a timeout after the page's onload event, so even after the page is loading, stuff could be happening for a few seconds. For a whole bunch of reasons, mostly relating to requirements from management, we need to know when all of these scripts have finished running. There's an arbitrary number of them so a general solution would be great.

• Looking for a wiki-style, standalone, version-control-"safe" documenation package

My team and I have found that documenting our project (a development platform w/ API) with a wiki is both useful to us and useful to the users. Due to some organizational issues, we're forced to do multi-site development without network connectivity. We've switched to a DVCS (Mercurial) and had great success with this. The wiki documentation proves to be a problem as the central site is setup with MediaWiki. The offsite people have no way to access or edit the wiki. Is there any sort of wiki-style package which doesn't not require a server/database and will be useable in a DVCS environment? Update: Should be open-source and cross-platform

  I'm using sunspot/rails version 2. It's working great, but I can't figure out how to handle missing fields. If I don't have latitude and longitude this code will map it to 0,0 (near Africa): searchable do text :resume, :stored => true text :city, :boost => 5 latlon(:geo) { Sunspot::Util::Coordinates.new(latitude, longitude) } end I tried using two search blocks, each with a different conditional, but sunspot just uses the first searchable block. What I want to happen is for things missing locations to still be searchable, just not by location.

• Haskell - mapping the odd placed values and the even placed values differently

  Hey guys, is there an easy way. To take a list of numbers, say 123456. Then multiply the odd placed by three and the even placed by 1. i.e. (1 * 3) + (2 * 1) + (3 * 3) + (4*1) + (5*3) + (6*1) i was thinking the map function somewhere along the lines. But i don't know how to map *3 to just the odd placed values. • Deep Copy using Reflection in an Extension Method for Silverlight?

  So I'm trying to find a generic extension method that creates a deep copy of an object using reflection, that would work in Silverlight. Deep copy using serialization is not so great in Silverlight, since it runs in partial trust and the BinaryFormatter does not exist. I also know that reflection would be faster then serialization for cloning. It would be nice to have a method that works to copy public, private and protected fields, and is recursive so that it can copy objects in objects, and that would also be able to handle collections, arrays, etc. I have searched online, and can only find shallow copy implementations using reflection. I don't understand why, since you can just use MemberwiseClone, so to me, those implementations are useless. Thank You.

  For my client's custom-built CRM, I want users (technicians) to be notified of changes to marked cases via email. This warrants a simple subscription mapping table between users and cases and automated emails to be sent every time a change is made to a case from within the logging method. How do I send 10-100 emails to subscribed users without bogging down my logging method? My SMTP server is on a peer on my LAN, so sends should be quick, but ideally this should be handled by an external queuing process. I can have a cron job send any outstanding emails every 10 minutes, but for this specific client cases are quite time-sensitive and instant notification (as instant as email can be) would be great. How can I send bulk notification emails from within ASP.NET MVC without bogging down my logging method?

  I have a table (apples) containing: cid date_am date_pm ---------------------- 1 1 1 2 2 1 3 1 3 1 1 2 I asked a question earlier (badly) about how I would rank the customers in order of the number of ones(1) they had. The solution was (based on one column): SELECT cid, sum( date_pm ) AS No_of_ones FROM apples WHERE date_am =1 GROUP BY cid ORDER BY no_of_ones DESC This works great for one column but how would I do the same for the sum of the two columns. ie. • Converting VS 2008 Project to VS 2010 - now .aspx won't load

  I converted all my other projects fine from VS 2008 to 2010 and they run great. There is one project however for some reason after converting, when I try to run one of the .aspx pages in it, I get nothing...no error, just that it cannot display the page. Nothing has changed. The path is still the same, and the IIS website is still the same. I even recreated the site in IIS using the VS option to create it in the web project properties. This is a testing project..only has like one .aspx in it. Not sure why I get nothing after converting this. I did not convert it to .NET 4.0, it's still in v3.5 in VS 2010.

  Hi guys. I am migrating my 1.8.7 rails app to rails 3. But I have a problem with a partial: I have the following partial: in my cms controller : @clients = Client.all group = render_to_string :layout = 'layouts/window', :partial = 'clients/index' in my "clients/index" partial: <%= render :partial = 'clients/item', :collection = @clients % This worked great with rails 1.7.8 but with rails 3 only the partial in the index get's rendered!. So, to clarify this, the group variable in the controller doesn't get the html from the layout. Also the weird thing is that the window layout is _window.erb (if I do window.html.erb or just window.erb rails can't find it which is strange). Does anybody know if this behavior is normal for rails 3? thanxs!

  Ok, I've had one semester of C++ and will be taking a second semester in it after I have taken a Data Structure class this fall. In the first class, we dealt mainly with C++ syntax and the textbook we used was ok, but now I'm wanting to go ahead and purchase a great C++ book that encompasses a lot of the programming concepts used today. I'm learning Objective-C on my own and was able to get through the whole object-oriented stuff pretty easily, along with other things like pointers, inheritance, delegation, etc. It doesn't have to exactly have EVERYTHING in it, but I do want to buy the book with the most information in it. Money is no problem. So my question is what book did you use or still use for C++? Is it a book that you can reference back to if you ever forget how to do something small, or would you have to go online and find the answer.

• Hooking a synchronous event handler on a form submit button in JS

  Hi, I'm working on a security project in javascript (something I honestly have not used), and I'm having some trouble with EventListeners. My code looks something like this: function prevclick(evt) { evt.preventDefault(); document.loginform.submitbtn.removeEventListener('click',prevclick,false); var req = new XMLHttpRequest(); req.open("GET","testlog.php?submission=complete",false); req.send(); document.loginform.submitbtn.click(); //tried this and loginform.submit() } document.loginform.submitbtn.addEventListener('click',prevclick,false); But the problem is, the submit button doesn't submit the form on the first click (it does, however, send the http request on the first click), and on the second click of the submit button, it works as normal. I think there is a problem with the synchronization, but I do need to have the request processed before forwarding the user to the next page. Any ideas on this would be great. Thanks in advance.

• Entry points on different urls possible?

  Hi, I've got a typical gwt project, but am using some url rewriting techniques such that urls entered like: www.mysite.com/johndoe www.mysite.com/janedoe all get served by my main entrypoint project.jsp file. This works great when deployed. When I'm running in hosted mode, it's a total bummer because changing the url in the browser breaks the link with the hosted-mode debugging, such that when I make changes to the source in eclipse and refresh, those changes are not immediately shown. I need to recompile the app and relaunch, and we all know how long that takes. Is there any way to somehow get the hosted-mode environment to recognize that the same webapp is being served on these different urls, and just reconnect the debugging connection? We basically get: http://localhost:8888/myproject.jsp?gwt.codesvr=192.168.1.2:9997 when launching hosted mode, I'd like: http://localhost:8888/johndoe to just reconnect to the debugger, if possible.   Hi All, We have some legacy software which depends on sending keystrokes to a DOS window and then scraping the screen. I am trying to re-create the software by redirecting the input and output streams of the process directly to my application. This part I have managed fine using: _Process = new Process(); { _Process.StartInfo.FileName = APPLICATION; _Process.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true; _Process.StartInfo.RedirectStandardInput = true; _Process.StartInfo.RedirectStandardError = true; _Process.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false; _Process.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true; _Process.OutputDataReceived += new DataReceivedEventHandler(_Process_OutputDataReceived); _Process.ErrorDataReceived += new DataReceivedEventHandler(_Process_ErrorDataReceived); } My problem is I need to send some command modifiers such as Ctrl, ALT and Space as well as F1-12 to this process but am unsure how. I can send basic text and I receive response's fine. I just need to emulate these modifiers. Any help would be great, Cheers

• In python, is there anyway to have a variable be a different random number everytime?

  Basically I have this: import random variable1 = random.randint(13, 19) And basically what that does is assign variable1 a random number between 13 and 19. Great. But, what I want it to do is assign a different random number between 13 and 19 to that variable every time it is called. Is there anyway I can do this? If I'm not being clear enough here's an example: import random variable1 = random.randint(13, 19) print(variable1) print(variable1) print(variable1) And the output I want would look something like this: ./script.py 15 19 13 So yeah, anyway I could do this in python? (More specifically python3. but the answer would probably be similar to a python2 answer)
