  From time to time I got the following exception message on GAE for my GAE/J app. I searched with Google, no relevant results were found. Does anyone know about this? • web application with secured sections, sessions and related trouble

  I would like to create web application with admin/checkout sections being secured. Assuming I have SSL set up for subdomain.mydomain.com I would like to make sure that all that top-secret stuff ;) like checkout pages and admin section is transferred securely. Would it be ok to structure my application as below? subdomain.mydomain.com adminSectionFolder adminPage1.php adminPage2.php checkoutPagesFolder checkoutPage1.php checkoutPage2.php checkoutPage3.php homepage.php loginPage.php someOtherPage.php someNonSecureFolder nonSecurePage1.php nonSecurePage2.php nonSecurePage3.php imagesFolder image1.jpg image2.jpg image3.jpg Users would access my web application via http as there is no need for SSL for homepage and similar. Checkout/admin pages would have to be accessed via https though (that I would ensure via .htaccess redirects). I would also like to have login form on every page of the site, including non-secure pages. Now my questions are: if I have form on non-secure page e.g http://subdomain.mydomain.com/homepage.php and that form sends data to http://subdomain.mydomain.com/loginPage.php, is data being send encrypted as if it were sent from https://subdomain.mydomain.com/homepage.php? I do realize users will not see padlock, but browser still should encrypt it, is it right? If on secure page loginPage.php (or any other accessed via https for that instance) I created session, session ID would be assigned, and in case of my web app. something like username of the logged in user. Would I be able to access these session variable from http://subdomain.mydomain.com/homepage.php to for example display greeting message? If session ID is stored in cookies then it would be trouble I assume, but could someone clarify how it should be done? It seems important to have username and password send over SSL. Related to above question I think.. would it actually make any sense to have login secured via SSL so usenrame/password would be transferred securely, and then session ID being transferred with no SSL? I mean wouldnt it be the same really if someone caught username and password being transferred, or caught session ID? Please let me know if I make sense here cause it feels like I'm missing something important. EDIT: I came up with idea but again please let me know if that would work. Having above, so assuming that sharing session between http and https is as secure as login in user via plain http (not https), I guess on all non secure pages, like homepage etc. I could check if user is already logged in, and if so from php redirect to https version of same page. So user fills in login form from homepage.php, over ssl details are send to backend so probably https://.../homepage.php. Trying to access http://.../someOtherPage.php script would always check if session is created and if so redirect user to https version of this page so https://.../someOtherPage.php. Would that work? 4.To avoid browser popping message "this page contains non secure items..." my links to css, images and all assets, e.g. in case of http://subdomain.mydomain.com/checkoutPage1.php should be absolute so "/images/image1.jpg" or relative so "../images/image1.jpg"? I guess one of those would have to work :) wow that's long post, thanks for your patience if you got that far and any answers :) oh yeh and I use php/apache on shared hosting

• Publish Static Content to WebLogic

  Most people know WebLogic has a built in web server. Typically this is not an issue as you deploy java applications and WebLogic publishes to the web. But what if you just want to display a simple static HTML page. In WebLogic you can develop a simple web application to display static HTML content. In this example I used WLS 10.3.3. I want to display 2 files, an HTML file, and an xsd for reference. Create a directory of your choice, this is what I will call the document root. mkdir /u01/oracle/doc_root Copy the static files to this directory  In the document root directory created in step 1 create the directory WEB-INF mkdir WEB-INF In the WEB-INF directory create a file called web.xml with the following content <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN" "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_3.dtd"> <web-app> </web-app> Login to the WebLogic console to deploy application Click on Deployments Click on Lock & Edit Click Install and set the path to the directory created in step 1 Leave default "Install this deployment as an application" and click Next Select a Managed Server to deploy to and click Next Accept the defaults and click Finish  Deployment completes successfully, now click the Activate Changes You should now see the application started in the deployments You can now access your static content via the following URL http://localhost:7001/doc_root/helloworld.html

• Web API, JavaScript, Chrome &amp; Cross-Origin Resource Sharing

  The team spent much of the week working through this issues related to Chrome running on Windows 8 consuming cross-origin resources using Web API.  We thought it was resolved on day 2 but it resurfaced the next day.  We definitely resolved it today though.  I believe I do not fully understand the situation but I am going to explain what I know in an effort to help you avoid and/or resolve a similar issue. So, for example, if you write a ASP.NET MVC Web API service and try to consume it from multiple apps, the browsers used may (will?) indicate that you are not allowed by showing an “Access-Control-Allow-Origin” error indicating the requester is not allowed to make requests. Internet Explorer (big surprise) is the odd-hair-colored step-child in this mix. It seems that running locally at least IE allows this for development purposes.  Chrome and Firefox do not.  In fact, Chrome is quite restrictive.  Notice the images below. IE shows data (a tabular view with one row for each day of a week) while Chrome does not (trust me, neither does Firefox).  Further, the Chrome developer console shows an XmlHttpRequest (XHR) error. Screen captures from IE (left) and Chrome (right). Note that Chrome does not display data and the console shows an XHR error. Why does this happen? The Web browser submits these requests and processes the responses and each browser is different. Okay, so, IE is probably the only one that’s truly different.  However, Chrome has a specific process of performing a “pre-flight” check to make sure the service can respond to an “Access-Control-Allow-Origin” or Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) request.  So basically, the sequence is, if I understand correctly:  1)Page Loads –> 2)JavaScript Request Processed by Browser –> 3)Browsers Prepares to Submit Request –> 4)[Chrome] Browser Submits Pre-Flight Request –> 5)Server Responds with HTTP 200 –> 6)Browser Submits Request –> 7)Server Responds with Data –> 8)Page Shows Data This situation occurs for both GET and POST methods.  Typically, GET methods are called with query string parameters so there is no data posted.  Instead, the requesting domain needs to be permitted to request data but generally nothing more is required.  POSTs on the other hand send form data.  Therefore, more configuration is required (you’ll see the configuration below).  AJAX requests are not friendly with this (POSTs) either because they don’t post in a form. How to fix it. The team went through many iterations of self-hair removal and we think we finally have a working solution.  The trial-and-error approach eventually worked and we referenced many sources for the information.  I indicate those references above.  There are basically three (3) tasks needed to make this work. Assumptions: You are using Visual Studio, Web API, JavaScript, and have Cross-Origin Resource Sharing, and several browsers. 1. Configure the client Joel Cochran centralized our “cors-oriented” JavaScript (from here). Change Web API Controllers to Allow CORS There are actually two steps here.  Do you remember above when we mentioned the “pre-flight” check?  Chrome actually asks the server if it is allowed to ask it for cross-origin resource sharing access.  So you need to let the server know it’s okay.  This is a two-part activity.  a) Add the appropriate response header Access-Control-Allow-Origin, and b) permit the API functions to respond to various methods including GET, POST, and OPTIONS.  OPTIONS is the method that Chrome and other browsers use to ask the server if it can ask about permissions.  Here is an example of a Web API controller thus decorated: NOTE: You’ll see a lot of references to using “*” in the header value.  For security reasons, Chrome does NOT recognize this is valid. Headers and Methods and Such We had most of this code in place but found that Chrome and Firefox still did not render the data.  Interestingly enough, Fiddler showed that the GET calls succeeded and the JSON data is returned properly.  We learned that among the headers set at the class level, we needed to add “ACCEPT”.  Note that I accidentally added it to methods and to headers.  Adding it to methods worked but I don’t know why.  We added it to headers also for good measure.   I created websites for many years but still have not found the right way to organize all the email and social accounts of every clients. I mean, every web agency follows dozens of customers. Each client needs at least Google Analytics, AdWords, a Facebook page, a Twitter profile, a Youtube channel, probably a listing on Google Places and maybe a Mail Chimp (or similar) account. The web agency, in my opinion, must own these accounts, use them to deliver results to the customer and -of course- make them available to the customer for two reasons: - The customer must be able to see how things are going - The client must have the ability to change web agency without suffering The web agency, however, has many problems in having all of these accounts. For example, I like the idea of having a Gmail account for each client and from that account use all the products of Google. But is not possible to create more than many Gmail account from the same ip address and with the same phone number. The web agency could invite the customer to create his own accounts but: - This is not necessary a value for the customer (indeed...) - The web agency would manage them, however, from the same ip address, incurring in problems - If phone verification occurs, the web agency has to disturb the customer for verification Have you the same problem? I have modified it to send email to myself every time an EBS snapshot is created or deleted. • Add SQL Azure database to Azure Web Role and persist data with entity framework code first.

  In my last post I went for a warts n all approach to set up a web role on Azure. In this post I’ll describe how to add an SQL Azure database to the project. This will be described with an as minimal as possible amount of code and screen dumps. All questions are welcome in the comments area. Please don’t email since questions answered in the comments field is made available to other visitors. As an example we will add a comments section to the site we used in the previous post (Länk här). Steps: 1. Create a Comments entity and then use Scaffolding to set up controller and view, and add ConnectionString to web.config. 2. Create SQL Azure database in Management Portal and link the new database 3. Test it online!   1. Right click Models folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class Comment. 1.1 Replace the Code in the class with the following: using System.Data.Entity; namespace MvcWebRole1.Models { public class Comment {    public int CommentId { get; set; }    public string Name { get; set; }      public string Content { get; set; } } public class CommentsDb : DbContext { public DbSet<Comment> CommentEntries { get; set; } } } Now Entity Framework can create a database and a table named Comment. Replace everything within “ “ in the copied connectionstring with that you got from SQL Azure. You will have something like this:   2.3 Rebuild the application, right click the cloud project and choose “Package…” (if you haven’t set up publishing profile which we will do in our next blog post). Remember to choose the right config file, use debug for staging and release for production so your databases won’t collide. You should see something like this:   2.4 Go to Management Portal and click the Web Services menu, choose your service and click update in the bottom menu.   2.5 Link the newly created database to your application. • Path Not Found error when opening VB6 project from a shared folder on Virtual PC 2007 (XP sp3)

  I currently work on a small software team that primarily maintains legacy software. I am trying to set up a VirtualPC that we can use to do this maintenance. Specifically, I would like to be able to debug and run VB6 web apps from a folder on the host pc. My constraints are as follows: The VirtualPC will not be registered on the domain. The server that hosts our Subversion repository does not run the subversion service so the only way to interact with the repository is through "file:\\", which requires domain authentication. It is not possible to debug/run VB6 web apps that are located on mapped network drives, because IIS requires that the VirtualPC be on the same domain as the network drive I would like to avoid having to copy the folder from the host pc to the VirtualPC and then copying it back in order to have the latest revision from Subversion So, I am trying to use VirtualPC's shared folder feature to share the host machine's Subversion directory and open the project in VB6 on the VirtualPC. Problem is that Visual Basic throws the error: "Path not found: '\\C:\\Subversion\Path\Project.vbp'" when I try to open it. Folder C:\Subversion on the host machine is mapped to G: on the VirtualPC. If anyone can help me resolve this error or find some other way to accomplish this, I would be deeply grateful. Oh, both host and virtual OS is Windows XP sp3. Using VB 6.0, IIS v5.1. error at build time, and a day of google searching has turned up other instances of this error caused by different triggers, and solutions for those propblems didn't work for me. I also found a single report on the Oracle forums that seemed to be a carbon copy of this issue, but there were no replies. The application is written in Weblogic Workshop 10, runs on Weblogic Server 10.3, and uses Beehive / NetUI. Not sure if that would make a difference or not though. The build scripts were automatically generated by Weblogic Workshop, with some tweaks and fixes made to other aspects of the files by myself to fix other compatability issues. I am using Java 1.6.0_23 from Sun, and Ant 1.8.1 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Rewind request body stream

  I am re-implementing a request logger as Owin Middleware which logs the request url and body of all incoming requests. I am able to read the body, but if I do the body parameter in my controller is null. I'm guessing it's null because the stream position is at the end so there is nothing left to read when it tries to deserialize the body. I had a similar issue in a previous version of Web API but was able to set the Stream position back to 0. This particular stream throws a This stream does not support seek operations exception. In the most recent version of Web API 2.0 I could call Request.HttpContent.ReadAsStringAsync()inside my request logger, and the body would still arrive to the controller in tact.   I have a Winforms app that consumes a C# Webservice. If the WebService throws an Exception my Client app always get's a SoapException instead of the "real" Exception. • Handling async ASMX web service exceptions

  Hi, I've developed silverlight client with makes async web services calls to a asmx web service. The problem is, I want to handle exceptions, so far as to be able to tell in the client application whether there was an exception in the webservice (and therefore will be logged local to the webservice) or whether there was a communication problem (i.e. the endpoint for the webservice was wrong). In testing both types of exceptions in my project I get the same generic exception: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The remote server returned an error: NotFound. This exception is amazingly useless when an exception occured in the webservice as it clearly has been found. Is the presence of this generic error to do with security (not being allowed to see true errors)? It can't be the fact that I don't have debug strings as I'm running on a dev PC. Either way, my question is, what's the best way to handle async errors in a commercial silverlight application? Any links or ideas are most welcome! :) Thanks a lot! Andy.

I've deployed the webpage and the WCF webservice to that machine. • Visual Studio 2008 Web Project error: Unable to start program http://localhost:port

  I am re-hashing this question because I have looked at over 50 threads in different forums and have not been able to get a resolution to my problem. Here are the specs: Windows XP SP3, Visual Studio 2008 SP1, .NET 3.5, ASP. NET MVC 2 project, IE 7 (was IE 8) Up until a few days ago I was not having any issues. It is now happening on any solution that I try to debug. I start a debug session (F5), the solution rebuilds, a VS development web server starts and then I get this error: Unable to start program http://localhost:2012/ If I open a web browser and enter the URL the application loads up. I had upgraded to IE 8 a few weeks ago and read there may be some issues so it has been uninstalled and I am currently on IE 7. Also, while IE 8 was installed I had switched my default browser to Firefox but my current default broweser is now IE7. I have reveiewed the threads on this site and others and have not been able to fix the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

I have given my app the INTERNET permission. I'm developing with eclipse. I've seen it mentioned that I might need to configure a proxy but since the web service i'm calling is on port 80 this shouldn't matter should it? I can call the method with the browser. Any ideas?

• Single Sign On for Web Application and Application in Virtual Directory

  To enable single sign-on for a web application and a web application in a virtual directory, I set the machinekey in both apps to the same: <machineKey validationKey="xxx" decryptionKey="yy" validation="SHA1" /> The single sign on works just fine, but existing users can't sign in any more; their passwords are rejected. The machinekey used to be this in the parent application: <machineKey validationKey="xxx,IsolateApps" decryptionKey="yy,IsolateApps" validation="SHA1" /> I tried other ways to make single sign on work, but it just won't as long as the keys contain "IsolateApps". What am I missing? I should add that the in the membership provider, passwordFormat is set to "Encrypted". So I assume the password was encrypted using the key that contained "IsolateApps" and now when it tries to validate the password it's using the key without the "IsolateApps". Still not sure how to solve that problem. Is there maybe a way that I can set the encryption keys for the password separately from the one that is used for the authentication cookie?

  I have been attempting to add a Deployment Project to my web app. When I build it, I get a message "An error occurred when merging assemblies: Exception from HRESULT: 0x806D0004". There is no other detail, like ILMerge error, or Duplicate Name.   I'm relatively new to web services, but I need to integrate a call to an existing service in my application. Ideally, I'd like to use JAX-WS because I'm looking for the simplest, quickest-to-develop solution on my end, and MyEclipse is able to generate a JAX-WS client from a WSDL. Unfortunately, the WSDL I've inherited was built from what appears to be Axis using RPC. Will this still work?
