  • Why does Tomcat 6 hang when I shut it down?

    I have Tomcat 6.0.24 64 bit installed on two Windows Server 2008 boxes as a Window's service. I use the Tomcat Monitor application to start and stop Tomcat. Randomly on both boxes, the server will not shutdown when the Stop Service option is selected. Both Start Service and Stop Service remain grayed out until I open a task manager and kill tomcat6.exe. This also happens with Tomcat 6.0.20 installed on these boxes, however it does not happen on my 32 bit Windows 7 machine. What is causing this?

  • Why am I getting a ParseException when using SimpleDateFormat to format a date and then parse it?

    I have been debugging some existing code for which unit tests are failing on my system, but not on colleagues' systems. The root cause is that SimpleDateFormat is throwing ParseExceptions when parsing dates that should be parseable. I created a unit test that demonstrates the code that is failing on my system: import java.text.DateFormat; import java.text.ParseException; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import java.util.Date; import java.util.TimeZone; import junit.framework.TestCase; public class FormatsTest extends TestCase { public void testParse() throws ParseException { DateFormat formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMddHHmmss.SSS Z"); formatter.setTimeZone(TimeZone.getDefault()); formatter.setLenient(false); formatter.parse(formatter.format(new Date())); } } This test throws a ParseException on my system, but runs successfully on other systems. java.text.ParseException: Unparseable date: "20100603100243.118 -0600" at java.text.DateFormat.parse(DateFormat.java:352) at FormatsTest.testParse(FormatsTest.java:16) I have found that I can setLenient(true) and the test will succeed. The setLenient(false) is what is used in the production code that this test mimics, so I don't want to change it.

  • ASP.net site looks completely different on IE, Firefox, and Chrome; why?

    I'm doing css for a website. I send the html and css to a guy, he puts it into ASP.net. The problem is that the transfer didn't end well for my code and it needs some fixing. The problem is that when I look at it in Chrome, or Firefox, or IE8, I get three completely different renderings. I spent a good amount of time trying to fix a drop-down menu that is supposed to appear while hovering over a link. The one he had in place from ASP.net worked in IE, kinda worked in Firefox, and was completely broken in Chrome (I haven't tested Safari or Opera.) Just getting it to look basically the same in firefox and chrome was a struggle. The html source is showing me two completely different pages as well. Does anyone have experience with this? I know nothing of ASP.net, and it seems like the guy is modifying my layout with a wsyiwyg (I found tables used in random places, which I did not put there.) Faced with this, what is my best option? Is this fixable, or am I in over my head?

  • Why is the EntityManager in my GAE + Spring (+graniteds) project reset to null?

    Hi all, I'm having a problem with autowiring my EntityManager. Actually at server startup I can see that the injection works ok, though when trying to use my EntityManager it appears to be null again. @Component public class DataDaoImpl { protected EntityManager entityManager; @Autowired public void setEntityManager(EntityManager entityManager) { System.out.println("Injecting "+entityManager); //works! this.entityManager = entityManager; } public void createData(String key, String value) { System.out.println("In createData entityManager is "+entityManager); //entityManager null!? ... Output: Injecting org.datanucleus.store.appengine.jpa.DatastoreEntityManager@a60d19 The server is running at http://localhost:8888/ In createData entityManager is null So somehow the autowired entityManager is reset to null when trying to use it. It's a graniteds powered project though I don't think this is graniteds related. Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance, Jochen

  • Why does Module::Build's testcover gives me "use of uninitialized value" warnings?

    I'm kinda new to Module::Build, so maybe I did something wrong. Am I the only one who gets warnings when I change my dispatch from "test" to "testcover"? Is there a bug in Devel::Cover? Is there a bug in Module::Build? I probably just did something wrong. I'm using ActiveState Perl v5.10.0 with Module::Build version 0.31012 and Devel::Cover 0.64 and Eclipse 3.4.1 with EPIC 0.6.34 for my IDE. UPDATE: I upgraded to Module::Build 0.34 and the warnings are still output. *UPDATE: Looks like a bug in B::Deparse.   • Why is giving a fixed width to a label an accepted behavior?

    There are a lot of questions about formatting forms so that labels align, and almost all the answers which suggest a pure CSS solution (as opposed to using a table) provide a fixed width to the label element. But isn't this mixing content and presentation? In order to choose the right width you basically have to see how big your longest label is and try a pixel width value until "it fits". This means that if you change your labels you also have to change your CSS.

  • Really new to XCode. Why won't the thing run?

    Hi, I'm trying to follow the April 2009 and Winter 2010 Stanford iPhone app development videos and I'm running up against the same problems with both. First, they don't appear to be using the latest version of XCode - the Outlets and Actions panels are in a different window and there is little info on the net about this (other than one other post on S.O.F.) Second, having got to the point where I've managed to connect the slider, label and changedLabelText connections, I save, build and run the app - the simulator loads, the app loads and then promptly closes again. What's going on? I have not written any code yet and I still have an app which, while it compiles, does not behave! Is there a better starting point for an XCode noob than the Stanford vids?   • Why does this Rails named scope return empty (uninitialized?) objects?

    In a Rails app, I have a model, Machine, that contains the following named scope: named_scope :needs_updates, lambda { { :select => self.column_names.collect{|c| "\"machines\".\"#{c}\""}.join(','), :group => self.column_names.collect{|c| "\"machines\".\"#{c}\""}.join(','), :joins => 'LEFT JOIN "machine_updates" ON "machine_updates"."machine_id" = "machines"."id"', :having => ['"machines"."manual_updates" = ? AND "machines"."in_use" = ? AND (MAX("machine_updates"."date") IS NULL OR MAX("machine_updates"."date") < ?)', true, true, UPDATE_THRESHOLD.days.ago] } } This named scope works fine in development mode. In production mode, however, it returns the 2 models as expected, but the models are empty or uninitialized; that is, actual objects are returned (not nil), but all the fields are nil. For example, when inspecting the return value of the named scope in the console, the following is returned: [#<Machine >, #<Machine >] But, as you can see, all the fields of the objects returned are set to nil. The production and development environments are essentially the same. Both are using a SQLite database. Any ideas what's going wrong?

  • Why does this attempt at preloading images with jQuery not work?

Normally, I get no alert boxes. However, if I open developer tools, and pause script execution, I get a single alert that says 0. There's nothign like a good old heisenbug! A live example can be found here. The script itself is called style.js, and it is clear that images have loaded. Am I doing something stupidly, or is jQuery playing up?

  • Why does Perl's Crypt::SSLeay timeout on Intel Mac OS X machines?

    A have a Perl cron job that recently started having its HTTPS connections start failing with an error of "500 SSL read timeout". I've tracked that the error is being thrown as part of an alarm in Crypt::SSLeay, but I don't know if this is simply something taking too long to respond. So far, I've adjusted the timeout from the default 30 seconds to 10 minutes and it still times out. I've moved the script to other machines, and those on Intel Mac OS X systems all time out, while those under Linux, or on PPC Mac OS X systems run fine, so I don't think it's changes on the network or remote server. When the process started having problems does not coincide with any software updates or reboots on the machine, and I've contacted the server I'm connecting to, and everyone claims that they haven't changed anything. Does anyone have recommendations on trying to debug HTTPS, or have you ever seen this behavior and give recommendations on something I might've overlooked at that could've caused this problem?

I know that careless people shouldn't be issuing queries directly and all that... and that there are legitimate cases where you want to affect all rows, but wouldn't it make sense to have an option on by default that requires such queries to be written like: UPDATE MyTable SET MyColumn = 0 WHERE * Or without changing the language, UPDATE MyTable SET MyColumn = 0 WHERE 1 = 1 -- tacky, I know

  • Why does Silverlight provides webcam and microphone support without any encoding API?

    In the list of new features in Silverlight 4 you will find following: Webcam and microphone to allow sharing of video and audio for instance for chat or customer service applications. Silverlight captures an audio stream as raw pcm. So how would you realize for example audio/video chat or client/server audio recording application without any encoding on the client side, where there is no APIs in Silverlight available? Much less in a Silverlight you cannot use an unmanaged dll. You can use a com automation (a new feature of the Silverlight 4, I think only for Windows) but only if it was already installed on the client side (do you know any encoding COM servers that are installed with the windows). Otherwise, how would you deploy a custom COM server within you Silverlight application? The only way I found is either to deploy a command-line encoding and use it with COM AutomationFactory.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") or to implement an encoding to use it in your own AudioSink.

  • Why is a NullReferenceException thrown when a ToolStrip button is clicked twice with code in the `Click` event handler?

    I created a clean WindowsFormsApplication solution, added a ToolStrip to the main form, and placed one button on it. I've added also an OpenFileDialog, so that the Click event of the ToolStripButton looks like the following: private void toolStripButton1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { openFileDialog1.ShowDialog(); } I didn't change any other properties or events. The funny thing is that when I double-click the ToolStripButton (the second click must be quite fast, before the dialog opens), then cancel both dialogs (or choose a file, it doesn't really matter) and then click in the client area of main form, a NullReferenceException crashes the application (error details attached at the end of the post). Please note that the Click event is implemented while DoubleClick is not. What's even more strange that when the OpenFileDialog is replaced by any user-implemented form, the ToolStripButton blocks from being clicked twice. I'm using VS2008 with .NET3.5. I didn't change many options in VS (only fontsize, workspace folder and line numbering). Does anyone know how to solve this? It is 100% replicable on my machine, is it on others too? One solution that I can think of is disabling the button before calling OpenFileDialog.ShowDialog() and then enabling the button back (but it's not nice). Any other ideas? I just took a full backup of the database, and then ran both: backup log dbmcms with truncate_only DBCC SHRINKFILE ('Wxlog0', TRUNCATEONLY) The name of the db is db_mcms and the name of the transaction log file is Wxlog0. Neither has helped. I'm not sure what to do next.
