• Turning off IE8 Compatibility Mode, Good or Bad?

  Hopefully this question isn't as subjective as I think it may be. I have an Intranet application which needs to work with IE8 as the enterprise is replacing IE6 as the standard browser. Our testing team found that it did not work in IE8, little did they know that it actually did. Their browsers were set to run IE8 in compatibility mode for Intranet applications. I found that if I set the meta tag for X-UA-Compatible to IE=EmulateIE8 that I could force the browser to render this application as IE8 and the application worked fine. Are there any pitfalls that I don't know about for this solution? If so, is there a better solution?

• Spring MVC absolute URL problem

  Background I am developing an application (with Spring MVC) with its base path as: http://localhost:8080/myapplication/ I have a stylesheet /css/style.css that I am trying to refer with absolute path in a JSP as: <link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen, projection"> Problem The stylesheet never loads in the browser. When I follow the stylesheet link through browser's view source feature, the link appears to be: http://localhost:8080/css/style.css Which should have had been: http://localhost:8080/myapplication/css/style.css I used to fix this issue with html:rewrite tag while working with Struts. Is there any equivalent tag/technique in Spring MVC? Thanks for your time.

• How to run batched WCF service calls in Silverlight BackgroundWorker

  Is there any existing plumbing to run WCF calls in batches in a BackgroundWorker? Obviously since all Silverlight WCF calls are async - if I run them all in a backgroundworker they will all return instantly. I just don't want to implement a nasty hack if theres a nice way to run service calls and collect the results. Doesnt matter what order they are done in All operations are independent I'd like to have no more than 5 items running at once Edit: i've also noticed (when using Fiddler) that no more than about 7 calls are able to be sent at any one time. Even when running out-of-browser this limit applies. Is this due to my default browser settings - or configurable also. obviously its a poor man's solution (and not suitable for what i want) but something I'll probably need to take account of to make sure the rest of my app remains responsive if i'm running this as a background task and don't want it using up all my connections.

• Customizing doxygen output for the HTML Table of Contents

  I'm using doxygen to generate an API reference from source code, aiming to convert it into a CHM help file and eventually into a plugin for Eclipse. Unfortunately the default ordering and nesting of the classes, namespaces, etc. in the Table of Contents is not exactly ideal and I'd prefer to customize it if possible. By default, doxygen creates two indexes/menus for navigating the generated documentation. One is the common Table of Contents on the left frame and the other is the row of buttons at the top of each individual HTML page. The latter can be comfortably customized by editing the layout xml file as described in doxygen manual (see section 'Changing the layout of pages') but so far I've seen no way to do similar modifications for the Table of Contents. To use a precise example, I'm looking for a way to nest the three standard topics Class List, Class Hierarchy, and Class Members as subtopics inside a parent topic in the TOC, as is done by default in the menu system that's located on top of every page. I'd imagine this is not the most unusual issue and may have a known solution available. Thanks for your assistance!

• H12 timeout error on Heroku

• Listview navigation behaviour in an xbap versus a standalone app

  Hello, I have an wpf application which contains a listview. When the application runs as a standalone I can navigate through the list with the arrow up and the arrow down keys on the keyboard. When the application is deployed as an XBAP and runs in a browser window I can do this too but when I for example reach the top element and press the up arrow key one more time the focus jumps to the url bar in the browser. Does anyone know if there’s an easy way to prevent this? Thanks.

• CSS div/overflow Question: Why does the first HTML file work but not the second?

  Notice how the first HTML/CSS works when you re-size the browser horizontally. It will shrink no further than around 800 pixels, but it will expand as far as you drag the right edge of the browser. It will also correctly overflow the table at the top and scroll it horizontally. The thing I don't like about the first code snippet is where the scrollbar is. I want it to show up within the borders of the fieldset, so even if I narrow the browser down to 800 pixels wide, I can see both the left and right sides of the fieldset's border. The second code snippet is exactly the same as the first except I add another div tag to the mix, inside of the field set and around the grid. Notice how the top fieldset's width won't correctly shrink when you make the viewport of your browser narrower. Any ideas on why it doesn't work, what I can do to get it to work like the first code snippet? I don't think I'm describing this clearly, but if you run the two side by side, and expand and contract the horizontal edge of your browser windows, you'll see the differences between the two. I'm pretty new to CSS and HTML layout, so my understanding of why CSS handles sizing the way it does in some situations is still really confusing to me.   Lets say we have a website that uses a web service for all of its functionality (i.e. retrieving and updating data from/to db), how does the web service authenticate requests? As I understand it, in a traditional java "website" a user provides a username & password, and upon validation a jsessionid is assigned to the user (client browser). Every time the client browser asks the website for something, the site checks for the jsessionid ensuring that the user is registered and authenticated. Is there a web services equivalent of this? If yes, what?

I find WebKit a good option to implement my crawler, since it has all the needed technology (Javascript engine, parsers, DOM manipulation, etc.) but it seems kind of an overkill being a fully featured browser.   I've got a controller action that returns a FileResult like this return this.File("file.pdf", "application/pdf"); for the URL "/Download/322" - where 322 is the id of the file. This works great, so that if a user clicks on a link to the PDF - it will open in their web browser as long as they have a PDF plugin installed. But, what if they right-click the link and choose "Save as..."? The browser pops up with the filename as "322." I'd like to have a better filename at this point, by doing something like this: return this.File("file.pdf", "application/pdf", "file.pdf"); But if I change the controller to return like that, then it will always pop up the download box, since MVC is setting the Content-Disposition header to attachment (so I can't embed the file). In summary, can I somehow detect that the user is trying to download the file vs. the file is just being embedded in something on the page?

When I check button B and refresh the page, B's label is displayed as checked (it has CSS ui-state-active class). And A's label is displayed as unchecked, even though it's A button that is actually checked. It happens in Firefox (3) and IE (8). • html widget communicating with server

  I'm making html widget for websites. Let's say, it will display current stock indexes. In short, arbitrary website owner takes code snippet from me and includes it on his webpage http://website.com/index.html. When arbitrary user opens http://website.com/index.html, my code sends request to my server (provider.com), which performs necessary operations and returns information to user's browser. When response has arrived, user will see relevant stock value on http://website.com/index.html. In index.html service could be called like this <script type="text/javascript" src="provider.com/service.js"> </script> <div id="target_area"></div> <script type="text/javascript"> service.show("target_area", options); </script> Now, the problem is in the same origin policy: I can't just send ajax request from website.com to provided.com and return html to embed in client's webpage. I see several solutions, which I list below, but none quite satisfy me. I wonder, if you could suggest something, especially if you had some relevant experience. 1) iframe, plain and simple. Disadvantage: must have fixed dimensions + stupid scroll bars appearing in some browsers. Can be fixed with javascript, but all this browser-specific tinkering doesn't sound good to me. 2) JSONP. Problem: can't return whole chunk of html, must return only data. Then, on browser side, I'll have to use javascript to embed data into html snippet placed statically in index.html. Doesn't sound nice, because data format is not very simple and may even change later. 3) Use hidden iframe to do ajax requests. A bit tricky, but sounds like a way to go. Well, that's my thoughts on the subject. Are there any better ways? BTW, I tried to check some existing widgets too, but didn't find much useful information. All domain names used in this text are fictional and any resemblance is purely coincidental :)

• MySQL stored procedure, handling multiple cursors and query results

  How can I use two cursors in the same routine? If I remove the second cursor declaration and fetch loop everthing works fine. The routine is used for adding a friend in my webapp. It takes the id of the current user and the email of the friend we want to add as a friend, then it checks if the email has a corresponding user id and if no friend relation exists it will create one. Any other routine solution than this one would be great as well. • ASP.NET website not working properly in mobile

  I have created a simple app with a page having a server side form, three fields and a button that submits and performs two operations - 1) adds the form fields to the database table 2) sends an email. Now everything works fine on the web browser on my machine but when I access the app through my mobile, the page does not seem to work. the UI and all are set but the button click functionality doesnt seem to be working and also the label which is set after a successful submit is already visible and showing the "thank you" message. Am i doing something wrong here? I have checked the app on Nokia Smartphone browser, android phone, and iphone simulator.
