• notification scheduling question

  Hi Stackers! I'm building an app that needs to send out notifications to users depending on user definable "notifications". So the notifications are not per event. They are arbitrary. A cron job should query the database and send out emails when it finds an event with matching criterion. The is a scheduling app. So naturally, one of the criterion is time. I think I've figured it out, but I'm sure there are better ideas out there as it seems to be a fairly common thing to do. I think I'll limit the users ability to "minutes before hand" to get notified as opposed to seconds or hours. So I have an eventA and notificationA. notificationA should be triggered if an event is due within 45 minutes. So eventA starts at 17:30. The user should be notified at 16:45. But the cron job might not run exactly at 00 seconds. So when the difference is not 45 minutes and 0 seconds it is, say, 45 minutes and 5 seconds. Notification time is past. Email doesn't get sent. User misses event. Shugar. We should also take into account that the cron job might take a long time to run. So maybe we should only trigger it every 5 minutes. So we need a bigger interval maybe. So then my guess would be to say that: if ((eventDueTime - now notificationTimeValue - interval) && (eventDueTime - now < notificationTimeValue + interval)) sendTheFrikinNotificationAlready(); It seems kind of risky if the there are thousands of notifications to send out. I guess I could make a thread for each notification and then a thread for each event that matches the criterion. That might help. Does that make sense? Any other ideas? Thanks!

• Running Awk command on a cluster

  How do you execute a Unix shell command (awk script, a pipe etc) on a cluster in parallel (step 1) and collect the results back to a central node (step 2) Hadoop seems to be a huge overkill with its 600k LOC and its performance is terrible (takes minutes just to initialize the job) i don't need shared memory, or - something like MPI/openMP as i dont need to synchronize or share anything, don't need a distributed VM or anything as complex Google's SawZall seems to work only with Google proprietary MapReduce API some distributed shell packages i found failed to compile, but there must be a simple way to run a data-centric batch job on a cluster, something as close as possible to native OS, may be using unix RPC calls i liked rsync simplicity but it seem to update remote notes sequentially, and you cant use it for executing scripts as afar as i know switching to Plan 9 or some other network oriented OS looks like another overkill i'm looking for a simple, distributed way to run awk scripts or similar - as close as possible to data with a minimal initialization overhead, in a nothing-shared, nothing-synchronized fashion Thanks Alex

• What is the career value in learning ColdFusion?

  ColdFusion is a language I encounter rather infrequently, however it does turn up from time to time either in job adverts or as .cfm file extensions in URLs. There are possible job opportunities near to where I plan to live for ColdFusion developers. It might be in my interests to have a look at ColdFusion. ColdFusion appears, to me, to be a minority language compared to C#, Java or indeed most popular languages. Don thinks ColdFusion is declining in popularity. Would a ColdFusion position today be more related to the maintenance of legacy code than innovative, creative development, thus less interesting? Is there any long term career value in learning ColdFusion?

• Registering custom webcontrol inside mvc view?

  I am in the middle of a project where I am migrating some code for a website from WebForms to MVC - unfortunatly there's not enough time to do it all at once, so I will have to do some... not so pretty solutions. I am though facing a problems with a custom control I have written that inherits from the standard GridView control namespace Controls { public class MyGridView : GridView { ... } } I have added to the web.config file as usual: <configuration> ... <system.web> ... <pages> ... <controls> ... <add tagPrefix="Xui" namespace="Controls"/> </controls> </pages> </system.web> </configuration> Then on the MVC View: <Xui:MyGridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" ...>...</Xui:MyGgridView> However I am getting a parser error stating that the control cannot be found. I am suspecting this has to do with the mix up of MVC and WebForms, however I am/was under the impression that such mixup should be possible, is there any kind of tweak for this? I realise this solution is far from ideal, however there's no time to "do the right thing". Thanks

• Need Advice on designing ATL inproc Server (dll) that serves as both a soure and a sink of events.

  Hi, I need to design an ATL inproc server that besides exposing methods and properties, also can fire events (source) and serve as a sink for a third party COM control that fires events. I would assume that this is a fairly common requirement. I can also foresee several "gotchas" that I would like to read up on before commencing the design. My questions/concerns are: Can someone point me to an example? Which threading model to use? Should I have a seperate COM object for the sink? Should I, and how do I, protect certain memory. For example, my server will receive data from the third party control. It will save this, and in some cases, fire an event to interested clients. The interested clients will request the data through a standard method or property. I did try to research this myself. I can find many examples of COM servers that are soures, and some that are sinks, but never both. • Avoid generating empty STDOUT and STDERR files with Sun Grid Engine (SGE) and array jobs

  I am running array jobs with Sun Grid Engine (SGE). My carefully scripted array job workers generate no stdout and no stderr when they function properly. Unfortunately, SGE insists on creating an empty stdout and stderr file for each run. Sun's manual states: STDOUT and STDERR of array job tasks will be written into dif- ferent files with the default location .['e'|'o']'.' In order to change this default, the -e and -o options (see above) can be used together with the pseudo-environment-vari- ables $HOME, $USER, $JOB_ID, $JOB_NAME, $HOSTNAME, and $SGE_TASK_ID. Note, that you can use the output redirection to divert the out- put of all tasks into the same file, but the result of this is undefined. I would like to have the output files suppressed if they are empty. Is there any way to do this?

So I want to refresh my php application once a day with a cron job. But I never wrote a cron job script before. I understand that I have to truncate all the tables/data and add the initial data. With phpmyadmin, I can import data. Is there any way I can import sql file after truncate the tables? What is the best way? Do I have to create table and insert all data? • UNIX: Replace Newline w/ Colon, Preserving Newline Before EOF

  I have a text file ("INPUT.txt") of the format: A<LF> B<LF> C<LF> D<LF> X<LF> Y<LF> Z<LF> <EOF> which I need to reformat to: A:B:C:D:X:Y:Z<LF> <EOF> I know you can do this with 'sed'. There's a billion google hits for doing this with 'sed'. But I'm trying to emphasis readability, simplicity, and using the correct tool for the correct job. 'sed' is a line editor that consumes and hides newlines. Probably not the right tool for this job! I think the correct tool for this job would be 'tr'. I can replace all the newlines with colons with the command: cat INPUT.txt | tr '\n' ':' There's 99% of my work done. I have a problem, now, though. By replacing all the newlines with colons, I not only get an extraneous colon at the end of the sequence, but I also lose the carriage return at the end of the input. It looks like this: A:B:C:D:X:Y:Z:<EOF> Now, I need to remove the colon from the end of the input. However, if I attempt to pass this processed input through 'sed' to remove the final colon (which would now, I think, be a proper use of 'sed'), I find myself with a second problem. The input is no longer terminated by a newline at all! 'sed' fails outright, for all commands, because it never finds the end of the first line of input! It seems like appending a newline to the end of some input is a very, very common task, and considering I myself was just sorely tempted to write a program to do it in C (which would take about eight lines of code), I can't imagine there's not already a very simple way to do this with the tools already available to you in the Linux kernel.

• Industry-style practices for increasing productivity in a small scientific environment

  Hi, I work in a small, independent scientific lab in a university in the United States, and it has come to my notice that, compared with a lot of practices that are ostensibly followed in the industry, like daily checkout into a version control system, use of a single IDE/editor for all languages (like emacs), etc, we follow rather shoddy programming practices. So, I was thinking of getting together all my programs, scripts, etc, and building a streamlined environment to increase productivity. I'd like suggestions from people on Stack Overflow for the same. Here is my primary plan.: I use MATLAB, C and Python scripts, and I'd like to edit, compile them from a single editor, and ensure correct version control. (questions/things for which I'd like suggestions are in italics) 1] Install Cygwin, and get it to work well with Windows so I can use git or a similar version control system (is there a DVCS which can work directly from the windows CLI, so I can skip the Cygwin step?). 2] Set up emacs to work with C, Python, and MATLAB files, so I can edit and compile all three at once from a single editor (say, emacs) (I'm not very familiar with the emacs menu, but is there a way to set the path to the compiler for certain languages? I know I can Google this, but emacs documentation has proved very hard for me to read so far, so I'd appreciate it if someone told me in simple language) 3] Start checking in code at the end of each day or half-day so as to maintain a proper path of progress of my code (two questions), can you checkout files directly from emacs? is there a way to checkout LabVIEW files into a DVCS like git? Lastly, I'd like to apologize for the rather vague nature of the question, and hope I shall learn to ask better questions over time. I'd appreciate it if people gave their suggestions, though, and point to any resources which may help me learn.

• Python: Decent config file format

  I'd like to use a configuration file format which supports key value pairs and nestable, repeatable structures, and which is as light on syntax as possible. I'm imagining something along the lines of: cachedir = /var/cache mail_to = [email protected] job { name = my-media frequency = 1 day source { from = /home/michael/Images source { } source { } } job { } I'd be happy with something using significant-whitespace as well. JSON requires too many explicit syntax rules (quoting, commas, etc.). YAML is actually pretty good, but would require the jobs to be defined as a YAML list, which I find slightly awkward to use.

  I sort of understand the concept of database normalization but always have a hard time explaining it in plain English especially for a job interview. I have read the wikipedia post, but still find it hard to explain the concept to none developers. "Design a database in a way not to get duplicated data" is the first thing that comes to mind. Does anyone was a nice way to explain the concept of database normalization in plain English. And what are some nice examples to show the differences between first, second and third normal forms. Say you go to a job interview and the person asks: Explain the concept of normalization and how would go about designing a normalized database. What key points are the interviewer looking for?

  I must be missing something obvious here but ... UIControl has a method - (void)addTarget:(id)target action:(SEL)action forControlEvents: (UIControlEvents)controlEvents which lets you add an action to be called when any of the given controlEvents occur. ControlEvents are a bitmask of events which tell you if a touch went down, or up inside, or was dragged etc., there's about 16 of them, you or them together and get called when any of them occur. The selector can have one of the following signatures - (void)action - (void)action:(id)sender - (void)action:(id)sender forEvent:(UIEvent *) none of those tell you what the control event bitmask was. The UIEvent is something slightly different, it's related to the actual touch event and doesn't (I think) contain the UIControlEvent. The sender (UIControl) doesn't have a way to find the control events either. I'd like to have one method which deals with a number of control events as I have some common code regardless of which event or events happened but I still need to know what the UIControlEvents were for some specific processing. Am I missing a way to find out what UIControlEvents were used when the action was called or do I really have to separate my code into -(void)actionWithUIControlEventX; -(void)actionWithUIControlEventY;

• Binding data to the custom DataGridView

  All, I have a customized DataGridView where I have implemented extra functionality and bounded datasource in the same custom DataGridView (Using C# and .NET). Now, I could able to use it properly by placing it on a panel control. I have added label as button on panel control to display data from datasource on to datagrid and create a binding source. Another Label which act as a button is used to update data from grid to databse. Issue: I pressed show label to display data in a dsatagridview. Modified the grid cell value and immediately pressed update label which is on same panel control. I observed that, the cursor is still in the grid cell when I press Save button. While saving, the cell value is null even though I have entered something in the presentation layer. My expected behaviour is to get the modified value while saving. Special Case: After typing something in the grid cell, if I click on somewhere else like the row below where I entered something, before I click on Save button, it is working fine. (Here, mainly I tried to remove the focus from the currently modified cell) Is there any way to bind sources before I click on save button? Please suggest me. Please feel free to ask me if you need any information. • Creating a DataTable by filtering another DataTable

  I'm working on a system that currently has a fairly complicated function that returns a DataTable, which it then binds to a GUI control on a ASP.NET WebForm. My problem is that I need to filter the data returned - some of the data that is being returned should not be displayed to the user. I'm aware of DataTable.select(), but that's not really what I need. First, it returns an array of DataRows, and I need a DataTable, so I can databind it to the GUI control. But more importantly, the filtering I need to do isn't something that can be easily put into a simple expression. I have an array of the elements which I do not want displayed, and I need to compare each element from the DataTable against that array. What I could do, of course, is to create a new DataTable, reading everything out of the original, adding to the new what is appropriate, then databinding the new to the GUI control. But that just seems wrong, somehow. In this case, the number of elements in the original DataTable aren't likely to be enough that copying them all in memory is going to cause too much trouble, but I'm wondering if there is another way. Does the .NET DataTable have functionality that would allow me to filter via a callback function?

I have a custom UserControl with a Panel that contains a a couple Labels, both .aspx controls. .aspx: <asp:Panel runat="server"> <asp:Label ID="label1" runat="server"> </asp:Label> </asp:Panel> <asp:Panel runat="server"> <asp:Label ID="label2" runat="server"> </asp:Label> </asp:Panel> Codebehind: private readonly Object object; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { // These are the lines that are failing // label1 and label2 are null label1.Text = object.Value1; label2.Text = object.Value2; } public ObjectRow(Object objectToDisplay) { object = objectToDisplay; } On another page, in the code behind, I create a new instance of the custom user control. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { CustomControl control = new CustomControl(object); } The user control takes the parameter and attempts to set the labels based off of the object passed in. The labels that it tries to assign the values to are however, null. Is this an ASP.net lifecycle issue that I'm not understanding? My understanding based on the Microsoft ASP.net lifecycle page was that page controls were available after the Page_Initialization. What is the proper way to do this? Is there a better way?

• silverlight 3: long running wcf call triggers 401.1 (access denied)

  I have a wcf service consumed by a silverlight 3 control. The Silverlight client uses a basicHttpBindinging that is constructed at runtime from the control's initialization parameters like this: public static T GetServiceClient<T>(string serviceURL) { BasicHttpBinding binding = new BasicHttpBinding(Application.Current.Host.Source.Scheme.Equals("https", StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase) ? BasicHttpSecurityMode.Transport : BasicHttpSecurityMode.None); binding.MaxReceivedMessageSize = int.MaxValue; binding.MaxBufferSize = int.MaxValue; binding.Security.Mode = BasicHttpSecurityMode.TransportCredentialOnly; return (T)Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(T), new object[] { binding, new EndpointAddress(serviceURL)}); } The Service implements windows security. Calls were returning as expected until the result set increased to several thousand rows at which time HTTP 401.1 errors were received. The Service's HttpBinding defines closeTime, openTimeout, receiveTimeout and sendTimeOut of 10 minutes. If I limit the size of the resultset the call suceeds. Additional Observations from Fiddler: When Method2 is modified to return a smaller resultset (and avoid the problem), control initialization consists of 4 calls: Service1/Method1 -- result:401 Service1/Method1 -- result:401 (this time header includes element "Authorization: Negotiate TlRMTV..." Service1/Method1 -- result:200 Service1/Method2 -- result:200 (1.25 seconds) When Method2 is configured to return the larger resultset we get: Service1/Method1 -- result:401 Service1/Method1 -- result:401 (this time header includes element "Authorization: Negotiate TlRMTV..." Service1/Method1 -- result:200 Service1/Method2 -- result:401.1 (7.5 seconds) Service1/Method2 -- result:401.1 (15ms) Service1/Method2 -- result:401.1 (7.5 seconds)

• How can I make a career in Formal Methods programming in USA?

  I've found that my (USA) professors recoil with a near-disgust when I ask them about how to pursue a career in Formal Methods programming. They say, "Oh, that stuff! That stuff is anal. You don't need that European POS to get a job." I'm sure I'll get a job without it, but Formal Methods interests me so much that I bet I'd like to make a career of it. I'd like to learn about Formal Methods at an American University and then work in that field here. I've found that even professors at more important universities than mine don't seem to welcome Formal Methods. Almost all FM research project webpages are semi-abandoned and moldering. Europe is where the action seems to be for this. Can anyone suggest a plan of attack, and along the way explain the antipathy to Formal Methods in the US? I'm a sophomore at a public university in the South.

• Starting a VC++ .exe from MSAccess

  For a complex calculating problem we use an VC++ module (.exe). For the users we have build an ms Access application as userinterface. After input dthe calculating module should start and do its job. The result is again imported in Ms Access. However we work wit dBase files (.dbf) as datafiles. The calculating unit works fine by its own, but when access is running it wo'nt do its job. It will start-up when called from the Access module, but then generates errors or at least does not write correct results to a datatable. We cannot find the reason for this beheavior. Can anyone give us a tip?

• Automatic web form testing/filling

  I recently became lead on getting an inordinate amount of testing done in a very short period of time. We have many different web forms, using custom (Telerik) controls that need to be tested for proper data validation and sensible handling of the data. Some of the forms are several pages long with 30-80 different controls for data entry. I am looking for a software solution (that is free) that would allow me to automate the process of filling in these forms by designing a script, or using a UI. The other requirement is that I can't use any browsers but IE6 (terrible, I know). I have previously used AutoHotkey to great success for automatic Windows form testing, since Autohotkey's API allows you to directly reference controls on the Windows form. However Autohotkey does not have similar support for web forms (everything is just one big "InternetExplorer" control). While I would prefer that I could script some variance in the data to help serialize each test, it's not necessary, as I could go back through and manually edit a field or two (plus "break" whatever control I'm currently testing) to serialize each test. If you've ever seen Spawner: http://forge.mysql.com/projects/project.php?id=214 It's almost exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for (Spawner generates dummy SQL data, as opposed to dummy webform data) - but I won't be picky, I've got a really short deadline to meet and had this thrust in my lap just today. ;) Edit1: One of the challenges of just using Autohotkey to simulate keyboard input (tabbing through controls) is that some controls don't currently have tab index (bug), and some controls cause a page reload after modification, resulting in inconsistent control focus (tabbing screwed up). Our application makes heavy use of page reloads to populate fields (select a location, it auto-populates a city, for example).

  Hi Everyone, I have a working Rails application on version 2.3.5 - I am using many to many model relations and have got almost everything working. What I would like to do is on my new kase page show the most recent kase job ref at the top. So for example, if I created a new kase with a job ref of "001", if I then went to create a new kase it would show at the top "Your previous kases reference was 001". I have the field of jobref in the new kase form, so I am trying to workout what I need to do to output only the last jobref. If that makes sense! Thanks, Danny

• WPF: Selecting the Target of an Animation

  I am trying to create a simple (I think) animation effect based on a property change in my ViewModel. I would like the target to be a specific textblock in the control template of a custom control, which inherits from Window. From the article examples I've seen, a DataTrigger is the easiest way to accomplish this. It appears that Window.Triggers doesn't support DataTriggers, which led me to try to apply the trigger in the style. The problem I am currently having is that I can't seem to target the TextBlock (or any other child control)--what happens is which the code below is that the animation is applied to the background of the whole window. If I leave off StoryBoard.Target completely, the effect is exactly the same.   I'm trying to wire together Guice (Java), Quartz scheduler and iBatis (iBaGuice) to do the following: Start command line utility-scanner using main() Periodically scan directory (provided as argument) for files containing formatted output (XML or YAML) When file is detected, parse and output result to the database The problems: I used this example to wire Guice and Quartz. However I'm missing some important details which I'm asking in the comments but the post is somewhat dated so I'm quoting it here also: It's not obvious how to set-up the scheduler. Where and how would I wire the Trigger (I can use Trigger#makeMinutelyTrigger)? I really have just one type of job I will be executing, I understand that details in the JobFactory#newJob are coming from the TriggerFiredBundle parameter but where/how do I wire that? And where/how do I create or wire concrete Job?

• MS Dynamics CRM trapping .NET error before I can handle it

  This is a fun one. I have written a custom search page that provides faster, more user friendly searches than the default Contacts view and also allows searching of Leads and Contacts simultaneously. It uses GridViews bound to SqlDataSources that query filtered views. I'm sure someone will complain that I'm not using the web services for this, but this is just the design decision we made. These GridViews live in UpdatePanels to enable very slick AJAX updates upon search. It's all working great. Nearly ready to be deployed, except for one thing: Some long running searches are triggering an uncatchable SQL timeout exception. [SqlException: Timeout expired. I was only able to get the full error message by using the JavaScript debugger in IE. Having found this error, I thought the solution would be simple. I just needed to wrap my databind calls in try/catch blocks to capture any errors. Unfortunately it seems CRM's IIS configuration has the magic ability to capture this error before it ever gets back to my code. Using the debugger I never see it. It never gets to my catch blocks, but it's clearly happening in the SQL Data Source which is clearly (by the stack trace) being triggered by my GridView bind. Any ideas on this? It's driving me crazy.   And what if you want to autocomplete passwords? I am using similar thing here... I am using Div (id=loginButton) and it has some image - I don't want button control in MVC application (), neither image button. I have hidden input control which is hidden button actually (id=submit_btn). So, on div's (id=loginButton) click, I want to call hidden input control (id=submit_btn) and it's submit action.
