  I'm trying to learn PHP and I'm just in the process of installing apache,msql and PHP. I'm on a mac osx 10.7.2 Processor 2.26 GHz intel core 2 due I downloaded: mysql-5.5.18-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I'm now at the point of setting the root password and when I type in: sudo: mysql_secure_installation it asks me to enter my password, then it says: sudo: mysql_secure_installation: command not found Any help would be appreciated. • Determining which database instance makes biggest IO

  Assuming that I have a dedicated server on which I am running multiple instances of mysql and postresql servers. How without iotop determine which instance in particular time (proc/pid/io shows data collected in some peroid of time) makes the biggest IO (so it increases IOWAIT)? When lots of ppl do something on DB then I clearly see which instance is making the load because of high cpu usage, but I had a situation when the cpu usage was just normal, but very high iowait made a huge load on server and i had problem finding process that was making some outstanding IO

• Innotop and Monit to kill thread using too much resources

  Instead of restarting the whole MYSQL process, sometimes I just want to kill the offending thread instead of making everything go down. Usually the spike in CPU is when a bot is crawling the first pages of pagination of my site (over 70.000 paginated results, 45 items per page). Is there a way I could do this automatically using monit and innotop? I couldn't find relevant information on Google, that's why I'm asking here. If these two tools aren't par to the task, which ones should I use?

  Possible Duplicate: Migrating users and mailboxes from postfix / Maildir to Postfix with Mysql backend So I've got 60 or so users on a hand rolled postfix installation on openbsd and I'd like to move their mailboxes to our new mail server running iRedMail (postfix, vmail/mysql back end) Does anyone know of a good way to do this? Preferably a script I can run to keep syncing the users mailboxes as MX records get updated? I presume one way (though I don't have all their passwords!) would be to have a command line imap client that simulated the users copying their mail themselves but I'm sure there must be a shell / php script to migrate users? Anyone got any bright ideas? Chris.

• What will happen if on my DB server I'll run out of space?

  I'm seeing a hugh difference of free disk space between df -h and du -sxh / I've understood in my question Resolving unix server disk space not adding up that du -sxh / is a better estimation as to when I will run out of disk space. Having said that, assuming in my case the above sentence will prove to be wrong and I will run soon out of disk space, what will happen? I assume the MySQL will fail INSERT queries, but other than that, will I just need to delete some files or will it be a problematic situation?

• How to set ulimits for a service starting at boot?

  I need, for mysql to use large-pages, to set a ulimit - I've done this in limits.conf. However, limits.conf (pam_limits.so), doesn't get read in for init, only for "real" shells. I solved this before by adding a "ulimit -l" to the initscript start function. but I need some sort of repeatable way to do this, now that the boxes are managed with chef, and we don't want to take over a file that's actually owned by the RPM.

• Database server size

  I received a recommendation from my hosting provider noting that a general rule in production server management is to ensure that the memory on your database server is larger than the size of your total database. Our database is 1800mb (and growing) and we're being told to purchase a 2GB server. This didn't sit right with me, but I'm not an expert in production server management. We're running a MySQL db with mostly InnoDB tables and some MyISAMs. Thanks!

• Automating Access 2007 Queries (changing one criteria)

  So, I have 6 queries and I want to run them all once at the end of each month. (I know a bit about SQL but they're simply built using Access's design view). So, in the next few days, perhaps I'll run the 6 queries for May, as May just ended. I only want the data from the month that just ended, so the query has Criteria set as the name of the month (e.g., May). Now, it's not hugely time consuming to change all of these each month, but is there some way to automate this? Currently, they're all set to April and I want to change them all to May when I run them in a few days. And each month, I'd like to type the month (perhaps in a textbox in a form or somewhere else if you know a better way) just once and have it change all 6 queries, without having to manually open all 6, scroll over to the right field and change the Criteria. Note (about VBA): I have used Excel VBA so I know the basics of VBA but I don't really know anything specific to Access (other than seeing code a few times). And, others will use this who do not know anything about Access VBA. So, I think I have found a similar question/answer that could do this in VBA, but I'd rather do it some other way. If the query needs to be slightly redesigned later, probably by someone who doesn't know Access VBA at all, it'd be nice to have a solution not involving VBA if that is even possible.

• How to schedule dynamic function with cron job?

  I want to know how I can schedule a dynamic(auto populated data) function to auto run everyday at saved time? Let's say I have a form that once the button is clicked it sends the data to the function, which the posts the data. • PHP Ajax not working

• I need help with creating a data structure in PHP

  What I need to do is have a data structure that shows jobs organised into 14 day periods, but only when an id is the same. I've implemented all sorts of stuff, but they have failed miserably. Ideally, maybe a SQL expert could handle all of this in the query. Here is some of my code. I also think I'm doing it wrong because I need to check the earliest date. Is it possible at all to do any of this in the database query? To recap, here is my problem I have a list of jobs with all have a rig_id (many jobs can have the same) and a date. I need the data to be organised into hitches. That is, the rig_id must be the same per hitch, and they must span a 14 day period, in which the next 14 days with the same rig_id will be a new hitch. Can someone please point me on the right track? • Strange enduser experience with Liferay, Glassfish and Apache on RedHat

  Tried multiple forums to get to the bottom of this. I hope I can get some direction here: Here is the stack I am working with: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.6 (Tikanga) Liferay 6.0.6 on Glassfish 3.0.1 MySQL 5.0.77 Apache 2.2.3 The Liferay portal provides a variety of portlets to end users. Static content (web pages), static resources (primarily pdf and mp3 files 1mb - 80mb in size), File upload and download capabilities (primarily 40-60mb mp3 files) and online streaming of those MP3 files. Here is the strange end user experiences: Under normal load: (20-30) users uploading, downloading or streaming files and 20-30 accessing static content (some of it downloads), we see the following: 1) Clicking a link triggers the download of a portion of an MP3 (the portion is a few seconds long). 2) Clicking on a link tiggers the download of the page content rather than rendering. 3) Clicking a link causes the page to dump binary data to the end user rather than the expected content. 4) Clicking a link returns the text of a javascript file rather than rendering the page. Each occurrence is totally random (or appears so). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to have no relation to browser or client OS. The strange events seem to occur much more frequently when using an SSL connection rather than regular http. Apache serves as a proxy server only (reverse). It basically passes all the requests through to Glassfish. There isn't any static content proxy served by Apache. We rebuilt the entire stack from scratch and redeployed the portlet wars and still have the same issues. Liferay is running as a single server (not clustered). We disabled mod_cache in Apache. The problems are more frequent as the server load grows. This morning the load is pretty light and we are seeing few problems but the use of the site will grow, particularly tonight around 9pm CST through Wednesday morning. You could try the site (http://preview.bsfinternational.org) during those times and I would expect that you might experience one of the weirdnesses as you randomly click links on the site (https is invoked only when signed in). Again, https seems to exacerbate the issue. This seems very much like a caching issue but I don't know where in the stack to start peeling the onion. Apache? Liferay? Glassfish? MySQL? Maybe even Redhat? We are stumped and most forums we have posted to (LifeRay and Glassfish) have returned very few suggestions. I just need an idea of where to start looking. I understand that we could have a portlet EDIT: Opening the files in a Hex editor that appear to be pages that download rather than render, we see that the first 4000 characters are "junk" and then the "HTTP/1.1 ...." 'normal' header is seen. So something is dumping a jumble of characters up to offset 4000 (when viewing it in a Hex editor). Perhaps a clue? Ideas?

• Can't sync filesystem without reboot

  I'm having an issue with a linux server. Once a week the running mysql instance hangs and there is no way to fully stop it. If I kill it, it remains in zombie status and init does not reap its pid. The server is used for staging deployments and some internal tools, so it's not under heavy load. The only process constantly used id mysql and for this I think that it's the only process which suffer of this issue. I've searched system logs for errors and the only thing I found is this error (repeated a couple of times) in dmesg output: [706560.640085] INFO: task mysqld:31965 blocked for more than 120 seconds. [706560.640198] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. I've tracked reboots script and I've found out that also the reboot process hangs on a sync call, this one in /etc/init.d/sendsigs (I'm on ubuntu) # Flush the kernel I/O buffer before we start to kill # processes, to make sure the IO of already stopped services to # not slow down the remaining processes to a point where they # are accidentily killed with SIGKILL because they did not # manage to shut down in time. sync I'm almost sure that the cause of this is an hardware issue (the RAID controller???) also because I've other two machines with the same hardware and software configuration and they don't suffer of this, but I can't find any hint in syslog or dmesg. I've also installed smartmontools and mcelog packages but none of them did report any issue. What can I do to track the cause of this issue? • SUBSONIC 3.0.0.3 Subsonic.Query.SqlQuery

  New to subsonic and having issues figuring it out. I am simply just trying to do a distinct search and any documentation I find is telling me to use the class/method SubSonic.SqlQuery Though I am finding out that since I am using the newest version, a lot of the documentation I am finding does not apply. For example, I am getting this query working beautifully using Subsonic.Query.SqlQuery though there is NO distinct method hanging off of it as suggested by what I have seen. Please advice! • Slow query with unexpected index scan

  Hello I have this query: SELECT * FROM sample INNER JOIN test ON sample.sample_number = test.sample_number INNER JOIN result ON test.test_number = result.test_number WHERE sampled_date BETWEEN '2010-03-17 09:00' AND '2010-03-17 12:00' the biggest table here is RESULT, contains 11.1M records. The left 2 tables about 1M. this query works slowly (more than 10 minutes) and returns about 800 records. executing plan shows clustered index scan (over it's PRIMARY KEY (result.result_number, which actually doesn't take part in query)) over all 11M records. RESULT.TEST_NUMBER is a clustered primary key. if I change 2010-03-17 09:00 to 2010-03-17 10:00 - i get about 40 records. it executes for 300ms. and plan shows index seek (over result.test_number index) if i replace * in SELECT clause to result.test_number (covered with index) - then all become fast in first case too. this points to hdd IO issues, but doesn't clarifies changing plan. so, any ideas? UPDATE: sampled_date is in table sample and covered by index. other fields from this query: test.sample_number is covered by index and result.test_number too. UPDATE 2: obviously than sql server in any reasons don't want to use index. i did a small experiment: i remove INNER JOIN with result, select all test.test_number and after that do SELECT * FROM RESULT WHERE TEST_NUMBER IN (...) this, of course, works fast. but i cannot get what is the difference and why query optimizer choose such inappropriate way to select data in 1st case.
