• i386 assembly question: why do I need to meddle with the stack pointer?

  Hello everyone, I decided it would be fun to learn x86 assembly during the summer break. So I started with a very simple hello world program, borrowing on free examples gcc -S could give me. I ended up with this: HELLO: .ascii "Hello, world!\12\0" .text .globl _main _main: pushl %ebp # 1. puts the base stack address on the stack movl %esp, %ebp # 2. puts the base stack address in the stack address register subl $20, %esp # 3. ??? pushl $HELLO # 4. push HELLO's address on the stack call _puts # 5. call puts xorl %eax, %eax # 6. zero %eax, probably not necessary since we didn't do anything with it leave # 7. clean up ret # 8. return # PROFIT! It compiles and even works! And I think I understand most of it. Though, magic happens at step 3. Would I remove this line, my program would die between the call to puts and the xor from a misaligned stack error. And would I change $20 to another value, it'd crash too. So I came to the conclusion that this value is very important. Problem is, I don't know what it does and why it's needed. Can anyone explain me? (I'm on Mac OS, would it ever matter.)

  I have an application in Android (running 4.0.3) that stores a lot of data in Table A. Table A resides in SQLite Database. I am using a ContentProvider as an abstraction layer above the database. Lots of data here means almost 80,000 records per month. Obviously, this is possibly the wrong way of doing things. I am trying to find a better way to approach this problem using a ContentProvider. But this is not the problem that bothers me. The problem is for some reason, it takes a lot longer to retrieve data from other tables which have only upto 12 records maximum. I see this delay increase as the number of records in Table A increase. This does not make any sense. I can understand the delay if I retrieve data from Table A, but why the delay in retrieving data from other tables. To clarify, I do not experience this delay if Table A is empty or has less than 3000 records. What could be the problem?

• Cassandra hot keyspace structure change

  Hello. I'm currently running a 12-node Cassandra cluster storing 4TB of data, with a replication factor set to 3. For the needs of an application update, we need to change the configuration of our keyspace, and we'd like to avoid any downtime if possible. I read on a mailing list that the best way to do it is to: Kill cassandra process on one server of the cluster Start it again, wait for the commit log to be written on the disk, and kill it again Make the modifications in the storage.xml file Rename or delete the files in the data directories according to the changes we made Start cassandra Goto 1 with next server on the list My questions would be: Did I understand the process well? Is there any risk of data corruption? During the process, there will be servers with different versions of the storage.xml file in the same cluser, same keyspace. Is it a problem? Same question as above if we not only add, rename and remove ColumnFamilies, but if we change the CompareWith parameter / transform an existing column family into a super one. Or do we need to change the name? Thank you for your answers. It's the first time I'll do this, and I'm a little bit scared.

• Cookie not renewing/overwriting in IE

  I have a weird quirk with cookies in IE. When a user logs into the site, I'm generating a new session id and hence need to overwrite the cookie. The flow is basically: Client goes to https://secure.example.com/users/login page, automatically receiving a session id Client POSTs login credentials to same address Client receives the following headers together with a 302 redirect to https://secure.example.com/users/mypage: CAKEPHP=deleted; expires=Sun, 05-Apr-2009 04:50:35 GMT; path=/ CAKEPHP=98hnIO23...; expires=Mon, 12 Apr 2010 04:50:36 GMT; path=/; secure Client is supposed to visit https://secure.example.com/users/mypage, presenting the new session id. This works in all browsers, except IE (tested in 7 & 8). IE retains the old, unauthenticated session id, and is redirected back to the login page. It works on my local test environment (using a self-signed certificate at https://localhost:8443/...), but not on the live server. I'm using CakePHP and simply issue a $this->Session->renew(), which produces the above cookie headers. Any ideas how to get IE to accept the new cookie?

  I am using Spring 3 and implementing Uploadify. The problem is, the files are updating properly but it is giving HTTP Error 404, on completion of file upload. I tried every possible solution, but none of them works. The files are uploaded. Values are storing in DB properly, only that i am getting HTTP Error 404.   Hello I would like to add an overlay image on a google map. This image is a SVG file I have generated (python with svgfig). Thanks PS1: I read some works like this or the source code of swa.ethz.ch/googlemaps, but it seems that they have to use javascript code to parse the SVG and add one by one all the elements (but I did not understood all the source...) PS2: The SVG is composed of different filled paths and circles, with transparency. If there is no solution to overlay my SVG, I can use 2 alternative solutions: rasterize the SVG convert the paths and circles in GPolygons But, I do not really like the 1st solution because of the poor quality of the bitmap and the time to generate it with antialiasing. And for the 2nd solutions, the arcs, ellipses and circles will have to be decomposed into small polylines. A lot of them will be necessary for a good result. But I have around 3000 arcs and circles to draw, so...

• Selecting a good SQL Server 2008 spatial index with large polygons

  I'm having some fun trying to pick a decent SQL Server 2008 spatial index setup for a data set I am dealing with. The dataset is polygons, representing contours over the whole globe. There are 106,000 rows in the table, the polygons are stored in a geometry field. The issue I have is that many of the polygons cover a large portion of the globe. This seems to make it very hard to get a spatial index that will eliminate many rows in the primary filter. For example, look at the following query: SELECT "ID","CODE","geom".STAsBinary() as "geom" FROM "dbo"."ContA" WHERE "geom".Filter( geometry::STGeomFromText('POLYGON ((-142.03193662573682 59.53396984952896, -142.03193662573682 59.88928136451884, -141.32743833481925 59.88928136451884, -141.32743833481925 59.53396984952896, -142.03193662573682 59.53396984952896))', 4326) ) = 1 This is querying an area which intersects with only two of the polygons in the table. No matter what combination of spatial index settings I chose, that Filter() always returns around 60,000 rows. Replacing Filter() with STIntersects() of course returns just the two polygons I want, but of course takes much longer (Filter() is 6 seconds, STIntersects() is 12 seconds). Can anyone give me any hints on whether there is a spatial index setup that is likely to improve on 60,000 rows or is my dataset just not a good match for SQL Server's spatial indexing ?

  I'm trying to encode a large number to a list of bytes(uint8 in Go). The number of bytes is unknown, so I'd like to use vector. But Go doesn't provide vector of byte, what can I do? And is it possible to get a slice of such a byte vector? I intends to implement data compression. Instead of store small and large number with the same number of bytes, I'm implements a variable bytes that uses less bytes with small number and more bytes with large number.   I have build a grid of div's as playground for some visual experiments. In order to use that grid, i need to know the x and y coordinates of each div. That's why i want to create a table with the X and Y position of each div. X:0 & Y:0 = div:eq(0), X:0 Y:1 = div:eq(1), X:0 Y:2 = div:eq(2), X:0 Y:3 = div:eq(3), X:1 Y:0 = div:eq(4) etc.. What is the best way to do a table like that? Creating a OBJECT like this: { 00: 0, 01: 1, 02: 2, etc.. } or is it better to create a array? position[0][0] = 0 the thing is i need to use the table in multiple way's.. for example the user clicked the div nb: 13 what are the coordinates of this div or what is the eq of the div x: 12 y: 5.   In a DrScheme project, I'm using a MrEd editor-canvas% with text% and inserting a string from a literal in a Scheme file. This results in an extra blank line in the editor for each line of text I'm trying to insert. I've tracked this down to the apparent fact that string literals from outside modules are getting extra line breaks. Here's a full example. • Compiled Haskell libraries with FFI imports are invalid when imported into GHCI

  I am using GHC 6.12.1, in Ubuntu 10.04 When I try to use the FFI syntax for static storage, only modules running in interpreted mode (ie GHCI) work properly. Compiled modules have invalid pointers, and do not work. I'd like to know whether anybody can reproduce the problem, whether this an error in my code or GHC, and (if the latter) whether it's a known issue. I'm using sys_siglist because it's present in a standard library on my system, but I don't believe the actual storage used matters (I discovered this while writing a binding to libidn). If it helps, sys_siglist is defined in <signal.h> as: extern __const char *__const sys_siglist[_NSIG]; I thought this type might be the problem, so I also tried wrapping it in a plain C procedure: #include<stdio.h> const char **test_ffi_import() { printf("C think sys_siglist = %X\n", sys_siglist); return sys_siglist; } However, importing that doesn't change the result, and the printf() call prints the same pointer value as show siglist_a. My suspicion is that it's something to do with static and dynamic library loading. Update: somebody in #haskell suggested this might be 64-bit specific; if anybody tries to reproduce it, can you mention your architecture and whether it worked in a comment? • UI Design, incase of numerous situations

  Hi... I'm creating a web form, where in there are around 12-15 Input Fields... You can have a look at the screen and The request is such that depending on the data the user selects in the Gridview and the DropDown list, the appropriate Textboxes and CheckBoxes needs to be displayed. Some times the conditions are very direct, like when the DDL value is "ABC", get only paid amount from the user. Sometime they are so complex like... IF DDL is "DEF" and Selected GPMS value is between 1000-2000, calculate the values of allowed, paid etc (using some formula) and the focus should be directed to Page No Field, leaving the other fields open incase user wants to edit... There are around 10-15 conditions like this. As this was done through agile, conditions were being added as and when, and wherever it feels appropriate (DDL on change Event, GridView on selecting change event etc... etc..) After completion, now I see the code has become a big chuck, is growing unmanageably... Now, I'm planning to clear this... From you experience, what you think is the best way to handle this. There is a possibility to add more conditions like this in future... Please let me know, incase you need more information. I'm currently developing this app in C# .Net WindowsForms Edit: Currently there are only three items (The Datagrid, the DDL, the OverrideAmt CheckBox) that change the way other fields behave... Almost all of the conditions will fall between the two situations I mentioned... Mostly they belong to "Enabling/Disabling".. "Setting of Values"... and "Changing Focus" or any combination of these.
