• EnvDTE: ArgumentException when accessing the ActiveConfiguration

  Hello, I'm writing an addin for Visual Studio 2008. At some point in my code, I'm attempting to access the current active configuration for a project: var configName = _Project.ConfigurationManager.ActiveConfiguration.ConfigurationName; Sometimes, in some very obscure cases, the getter for ActiveConfiguration throws an ArgumentException. Nothing in the documentation says anything about this (but given the very poor quality of the documentation, it was to be expected), and the exception's message is not helping at all. Also, ConfigurationManager is an interface, and I don't know what's the real implementation behind it, so I can't simply disassemble it in Reflector to know the cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• PHP Exec command - How to pass input to a series of questions

  I have a program on my linux server that asks the same series of questions each time it executes and then provides several lines of output. My goal is to automate the input and output with a php script. I know how to capture the output in an array by writing: $out = array(); exec("my/path/program",$out); But how do I handle the input? Assume the program asks 3 questions and valid answers are: left 120 n What is the easiest way using php to pass that input to the program? Can I do it somehow on the exec line? I’m not a php noob but simply have never needed to do this before. Alas, my googling is going in circles.

• Testing sample code in python modules

  I'm in the process of writing a python module that includes some samples. These samples aren't unit-tests, and they are too long and complex to be doctests. I'm interested in best practices for automatically checking that these samples run. My current project layout is pretty standard, except that there is an extra top level makefile that has build, install, unittest, coverage and profile targets, that delegate responsibility to setup.py and nose as required. projectname/ Makefile README setup.py samples/ foo-sample foobar-sample projectname/ __init__.py foo.py bar.py tests/ test-foo.py test-bar.py I've considered adding a sampletest module, or adding nose.tools.istest decorators to the entry-point functions of the samples, but for a small number of samples, these solutions sound a bit ugly.   I need to find the highest value from the database that satisfies a certain formatting convention. Specifically, I would like to fund the highest value that looks like EU999999 ('9' being any digit) select max(col) will return something like 'EUZ...' for instance that I want to exclude. The following query does the trick, but I can't produce this via Linq-to-SQL. There seems to be no translation for the isnumeric() function in SQL Server. select max(col) from table where col like 'EU%' and 1=isnumeric(replace(col, 'EU', '')) Writing a database function, stored procedure, or anything else of that nature is far down the list of my preferred solutions, because this table is central to my app and I cannot easily replace the table object with something else. What's the next-best solution?

• Will OpenGL give me any FPS improvement over CoreAnimation for scrolling a large image?

  Hi, I'm considering re-writing the menu system of my iPhone app to use Open GL just to improve the smoothness of scrolling a big image (480x1900px) across the screen. I'm looking at doing this as a way to improve on using the method/solution as described here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1443140/smoother-uiview). This solution was a big improvement over the previous implementation but it's still not perfect and as this is the first thing the user will see I'd like it to be as flawless as possible. Will switching to OpenGL give me the sort of smooth scrolling I'm looking for? I've stayed clear of OpenGL until now as this is my first app and core animation has handled everything else I've thrown at it well enough, would be good to know if this alternative implementation is likely to work! thanks

• Scrape HTML tables from a given URL into CSV

  I seek a tool that can be run on the command line like so: tablescrape 'http://someURL.foo.com' [n] If n is not specified and there's more than one HTML table on the page, it should summarize them (header row, total number of rows) in a numbered list. If n is specified or if there's only one table, it should parse the table and spit it to stdout as CSV or TSV. Potential additional features: To be really fancy you could parse a table within a table, but for my purposes -- fetching data from wikipedia pages and the like -- that's overkill. The Perl module HTML::TableExtract can do this and may be good place to start for writing the tool I have in mind. An option to asciify any unicode. An option to apply an arbitrary regex substitution for fixing weirdnesses in the parsed table. • Turning off auto indent when pasting text into vim

  Unfortunately, I am not an experienced vim user. But, I am making the effort to learn it. When I paste code into my document from the clipboard, I get extra spaces at the start of each new line: line line line I know you can turn off auto indent but mine doesn't seem to work because I have some other settings conflicting or something (which look pretty obvious in my .vimrc but don't seem to matter when I take them out). Can someone please show me the way to turn this off when I paste code but still have vim auto indent when I am writing code? • input type text and onKeyDown not working under IE

  Hi there. I am writing a WWW application, it has to run under IE. I have the problem with the code that runs under FF, but i can't get it running under IE. // JS code function test() { if (window.event.keyCpde == 13) window.location.href.ssign("myPage.php"); } I've tried some similar ways around window.location and location.href, also document.location. I've read that IE has problems with that, so i ask for a solution. The goal is, that page reloads after typing in some text into <input type='text' name='item_code' onKeyDown='test()'> and click enter. So the result is similar to pressing submit type button below the text input. Within IE it reloads the same page and nothing happens. In FF it correctly works.

  I've seen mspec used with nunit on some blogs and discussions. In fact, most of the examples on the web that I've seen demonstrate mspec with some kind of nunit dependancy or integration. My team is attempting to use mspec without nunit on a new ASP.NET MVC2 project. We're not at the spec-writing stage yet, so I can't tell what is better. What it your experience with this? Are there benefits to using mspec with nunit? Without?

• Reflection Permission problems when using the GSON library in a applet.

  I'm writing an Applet that makes some JSON-RPC calls. I'm using the Google JSON library (GSON) to cast the response JSON into a class. Thsi seems to work fine as is but when I use this code in my Applet, I'm hit with a java.lang.reflect.reflectpermission. From what I read on this thread on SO, it seems that since GSON uses Reflection, I cannot use it in Applets unless I explicitly modify the security policy. How can I get around this? I've created a bunch of classes in my application and was using the Gson.fromJson method to cast it into the class. Is there any way to achieve the same functionality without having to re-write half my code. (The complexity of dealing with JSON in Java seems to be in a league of its own!) Thanks in advance guys.

• UnitTest++ constructing fixtures multiple times?

  I'm writing some unit tests in UnitTest++ and want to write a bunch of tests which share some common resources. I thought that this should work via their TEST_FIXTURE setup, but it seems to be constructing a new fixture for every test. Sample code: #include <UnitTest++.h> struct SomeFixture { SomeFixture() { // this line is hit twice } }; TEST_FIXTURE(SomeFixture, FirstTest) { } TEST_FIXTURE(SomeFixture, SecondTest) { } I feel like I must be doing something wrong; I had thought that the whole point of having the fixture was so that the setup/teardown code only happens once. Am I wrong on this? Is there something else I have to do to make it work that way?

• using WP_Query with custom SQL in wordpress

  Hi. I am writing a plugin for wordpress and I want to create my own search. I have tried to alter the wordpress search, but what I am doing is very specific with the SQL query. I am comparing lat and long coordinates and getting posts based on that. I can display posts by using the standard wpdb query, but then I don't get the other features like paging. I'd like to be able to use my SQL statement with the WP_Query function. If I'm right in thinking, I should then be able to use the paging and other features which come from the $posts global variable. Is this right?? I've googled for hours but can't find anything for plugins outside of using args to select categories etc. I simply need to send a complete SQL command - nothing else. Many thanks....

• MVC in a Google App Engine Java world

  I'm coming to Java from C# & ASP.NET MVC, I'd love to find an equivalent in the Java world that I could use on the Google App Engine. I've already started to have a play with FreeMarker and even made the first steps towards writing a very simple framework. Ideally I wouldn't have to do all the hard work though, someone must have done this already! So my question is - what frameworks are there out there that would be familiar for me coming from ASP.NET MVC and I could use them on Google App Engine for Java. The key things I'd want are: Simple Routing - /products/view/1 gets mapped to the view action of the products controller with the productid of 1 Template Engine - some way of easily passing 'ViewData' to the view, and from the view easily accessing it, ideally I'd love to avoid anything that is too XMLy (thus why I like FreeMarker).

  I'm writing a jQuery application to allow analysis of data with the help of visual cues. My data is retrieved via XMLHttpRequest in the form of JSON. The visual cues include histograms, spark lines, and various other graph types. The idea is that the user is able to narrow their data via these various visual views. My question is thus - aside from the Google Charts API, does there exist a JavaScript way of presenting a Venn Diagram? Requirement: no Flash. Canvas is acceptable.

  I am writing an application in C# that makes use of a 3rd party COM DLL, this dll creates a lot of resources (like bitmaps, video, data structures) in unmanaged memory. While digging around I came across the following call for the Garbage Collector: GC.AddMemoryPressure(long long bytesAllocated) It is documented in MSDN here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.gc.addmemorypressure.aspx This sounds like something I should be calling since this external dll is createing a lot of resources the CLR is unaware of. I guess I have two questions... How do I know how much memory pressure to add when the dll is 3rd party and it's not possible for me to know exactly how much memory this dll is allocating. How important is it to do this?

• jQTouch with PhoneGap on webOS

  I'm writing an application in PhoneGap that I want to run on iOS, Android, and webOS. jQTouch plays nice with everything on iOS and Android, but not webOS. Since the webOS Mojo framework is based on Prototype (which uses the $ variable), it's necessary to use jQuery in noConflict mode. I can handle that much. However, the problem is that I also want to use the jQTouch plugin. The jqtouch.js file uses $ throughout, causing JavaScript errors when that file is loaded. Is there a way to run the jQTouch plugin (or any plugin for that matter) in my PhoneGap application without interfering with Prototype?

• internet explorer ashx file problem

  My problem is a bit complicated: I am writing in c#, asp.net and using jquery I have a page that sends requests to the server using jquery's ajax method. I have a ashx file (handler) to respond to these request. User can perform several changes on several pages, then use some method that will call the ajax method. My ashx file reads some values From the session variables and acts accordingly. This works fine in all browsers but in internet explorer. In internet explorer the session seems to hold old information (old user ids'). It's incredible, the same code works fine in firefox, chrome and safari but fails with ie. What could be causing it? I have no clue where to even start looking for a solution. btw, Sorry for the general title, couldn't figure out how to explain in just few words. Thank You!

• NLog not logging messages on XP SP3 with .NET 3.5 Client Profile

  I'm writing a program that is targeting the .NET 3.5 Client Profile and using NLog. I configure my logger programmatically on start up (no config file.) It works perfectly on Vista and Windows 7, but when running on a fresh install of XP SP3 with the .NET Client Profile installed, it will not log any of the variables in the layout string. For example, with the layout string set to: target.Layout = "MESSAGE: ${longdate}|${level}|${message}"; It will log "MESSAGE: | | |" Again, this only happens on XP SP3, and the logger is set to throw exceptions. Any ideas what may be causing this?

• Are preprocessors obsolete in modern languages?

  Hello, I'm making a simple compiler for a simple pet language I'm creating and coming from a C background(though I'm writing it in Ruby) I wondered if a preprocessor is necessary. What do you think? Is a "dumb" preprocessor still necessary in modern languages? Would C#'s conditional compilation capabilities be considered a "preprocessor"? Does every modern language that doesn't include a preprocessor have the utilities necessary to properly replace it? (for instance, the C++ preprocessor is now mostly obsolete(though still depended upon) because of templates.)

• DataSet.GetXml not returning null results

  Hi, whenever I convert a DatSet into an XML with DataSet.GetXml, any null value is ignored, so, where i expect this: <value1>a</value1> <value2></value2> <value3>c</value3> I get this instead: <value1>a</value1> <value3>c</value3> Any quick and dirty way to handle this? Thanks EDIT: I think a solution would be using WriteXml. Could anyone provide me with a sample of using it WITHOUT writing to a file but getting a string just like GetXml does? Thanks

• How does TransactionScope guarantee data integrity across multiple databases?

  Hey guys, Can someone tell me the principle of how TransactionScope guarantees data integrity across multiple databases? I imagine it first sends the commands to the databases and then waits for the databases to respond before sending them a message to apply the command sent earlier. However when execution is stopped abruptly when sending those apply messages we could still end up with a database that has applied the command and one that has not. Can anyone shed some light on this? Edit: I guess what Im asking is can I rely on TransactionScope to guarantee data integrity when writing to multiple databases in case of a power outage or a sudden shutdown. • Best Fit Scheduling Algorithm

  I'm writing a scheduling program with a difficult programming problem. There are several events, each with multiple meeting times. I need to find an arrangement of meeting times such that each schedule contains any given event exactly once, using one of each event's multiple meeting times. Obviously I could use brute force, but that's rarely the best solution. I'm guessing this is a relatively basic computer science problem, which I'll learn about once I am able to start taking computer science classes. In the meantime, I'd prefer any links where I could read up on this, or even just a name I could Google.

  Hi guys. I am using rails 3 and at the moment i am writing tests for my application. I get this weird deprecation warning: DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1. (called from at /Users/jeljer/Dropbox/webCMS/config/environment.rb:6) Of course my routes file is this: WebCMS::Application.routes.draw do #... end but no luck. If I look at the place what it is pointing to in my enviroment.rb: WebCMS::Application.initialize! I did a gem cleanup without any luck. Does anybody have an idea? ps. i am using rvm with ruby 1.9.2
