• Huwawei E220 broadband dongle not working

  The problem is, I have used Ubuntu from 6.10 upto 11.10. And upto 11.04 I used my same USB 3G dongle to connect to broadband and it worked fine. But 2 days ago I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and broadband is not working. It detects my dongle and creates a connection without a problem, but when connecting it just keeps on and on for a long time and then say I'm offline. So I did a clean install and the same thing occurred. But I also have a netbook and its got Ubuntu 11.10. I tried using the same dongle for internet on that netbook and it worked fine without any issues. But this isn't a problem with my USB port on my main machine or something like that because I'm also using Windows on my main machine (dual-boot) and its working fine. My hardware: Main computer (one that I'm trying to connect): 2.8GHz dual core Intel 2GB RAM 500GB Sata II HDD 384MB Video Memory (Intel G31/G33 chipset) Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) My NetBook (broadband working fine): 1.6GHz Intel Atom (dual core) 1GB DDR3 RAM 250GB HDD 128MB Video Memory (Intel something-I-can't-remember) Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) My dongle is a Huawei E220 and ISP is Dialog GSM (I'm in Sri Lanka) So any idea why this is?   Recently I had an interview with dev team in a company. The team uses agile + TDD. The code exercise implements a video rental store which generates statement to calc total rental fee for each type of video (new release, children, etc) for a customer. The existing code use object like: Statement to generate statement and calc fee where big switch statement sits to use enum to determine how to calc rental fee customer holds a list of rentals movie base class and derived class for each type of movie (NEW, CHILDREN, ACTION, etc) The code originally doesn't compile as the owner was assumed to be hit by a bus. So here is what I did: outlined the improvement over object model to have better responsibility for each class. use strategy pattern to replace switch statement and weave them in config But the team says it's waste of time because there is no requirement for it and UAT test suite works and is the only guideline goes into architecture decision. The underlying story is just to get pricing feature out and not saying anything about how to do it. So the discussion is focused on why should time be spent on refactor the switch statement. In my understanding, agile methodology doesn't mean zero design upfront and such code smell should be avoided at the beginning. Also any unit/UAT test suite won't detect such code smell, otherwise sonar, findbugs won't exist. Here I want to ask: is there such a thing called agile design in the agile methodology? Just like agile documentation. how to define agile design upfront? how to know enough is enough? In my understanding, ballpark architecture and data contract among components should be defined before/when starting project, not the details. Am I right? anyone can explain what the team is really looking for in this kind of setup? is it design aspect or agile aspect? how to implement minimum viable product concept in the agile process in the real world project? Is it must that you feel embarrassed to be MVP?

• Netbook Remix 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade using alternate iso

  I'm using Netbook Remix 10.04 now. I'm having the 10.10 alternate iso with me. If I use that iso to upgrade, will I lose my netbook version? I've seen in some forums that the upgrade resulted in a change from netbook version to desktop version. Updated on 15/12/2010 I upgraded the OS from 10.04 to 10.10. But I'm getting an error like this after restart: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory I searched in the forums and got a solution like this: Open Terminal gksudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf change the line MODULES=most to MODULES=dep Then use Synaptic (SystemAdministrationSynaptic Package Manager) to reinstall initramfs-tools. I'll be definitely trying this later. After that when the system tries to login, my screen starts flashing with just the ubuntu netbook desktop wallpaper on the screen. No other options will be available. It will be flashing continuosly. If I press the power button then one window comes up with options like Shut down, Restart, Hibernate etc. And the screen won't stop flashing either. I've uploaded a 1 min video. • How (and when) to move users to mysqli and PDO_MYSQL?

  An important discussion on the PHP "internals" development mailing list is taking place. It's one that you should take some note of. It concerns the next step in transitioning PHP applications away from the very old mysql extension and towards adopting the much better mysqli extension or PDO_MYSQL driver for PDO. This would allow the mysql extension to, at some as-yet undetermined time in the future, be removed. Both mysqli and PDO_MYSQL have been around for many years, and have various advantages: http://php.net/manual/en/mysqlinfo.api.choosing.php The initial RFC for this next step is at https://wiki.php.net/rfc/mysql_deprecation I would expect the RFC to change substantially based on current discussion. The crux of that discussion is the timing of the next step of deprecation. There is also discussion of the carrot approach (showing users the benfits of moving), and stick approach (displaying warnings when the mysql extension is used). As always, there is a lot of guesswork going on as to what MySQL APIs are in current use by PHP applications, how those applications are deployed, and what their upgrade cycle is. This is where you can add your weight to the discussion - and also help by spreading the word to move to mysqli or PDO_MYSQL. • What's new at Oracle in Gamification?

  It's been a crazy few weeks in Apps UX.  We are actively working on some gamification designs in now 4 different application product areas, as well as supporting some teams in other areas of Oracle.  Since that gets to be a pretty diverse group with a lot of resources and ideas, we've started a group in the Oracle Social Network on Gamification at Oracle.  That's limited to internal users at Oracle, but if you are interested in joining,  ping me directly for more information at [email protected]. We're planning another design jam like we did here at Oracle in May and at the Enterprise Gamification Forum in San Diego in September.  This time, we're taking the show to the UK, and hosting it with a group of customers on the Oracle Usability Advisory Board.  It should be a great event!   We're also actively designing some gamified flows which we'll be testing with users at the UKOUG to see what our customers think about some of our gamification ideas. We're looking at more feedback opportunities.  Internally, we surveyed 444 folks within Oracle about gamification and we'll be posting some of our findings on that here soon.  I'll be posting a blog on gamification for our customers at useableapps.oracle.com  in the next few weeks and I'll cross-post to here when it comes out.  So even though it's been quiet on this blog, we are busy and I'm hoping to push out more content in the next few weeks!  Would love to know what's most interesting to the folks reading so if there's something you especially want to see, feel free to comment or email me about it.

• How to help FGLRX detect a device

  I have HD 4850 card, Ubuntu 12.10 and installed legacy drivers using makson96 ppa. The issue is, that FGLRX can not detect my device and loads vesa bios. I had the same problem on ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 versions. I want to manually help fglrx find a matching device to load as it shoudld do. • Screencast not producing files

  I'm using Gnome 3 on 12.04 and trying to create a screencast. I start the screencast using the Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R shortcut and the red light appears in the bottom right corner. I go about my business then press the key combination again when done. The problem is that the screencast file gets generated maybe 1 out of 10 times. Is there a log file I can look at to determine the issue? How about a settings file? UPDATE: I did some additional testing. What's happening is that the screencast does work but it appends the new video to the existing file. Even if the file is renamed or moved to trash. Emptying trash does not create a new file either. Not sure where the video gets recorded to then. The only reliable way I've found to have a new file created is to log out of the session and log back in. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a way to force screencast to create a new file every time Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R is pressed?

  As Glados would say at the end of Portal “I’m still alive…”.  I am around, but I’m just not posting as frequently as I should.  I am trying to get acclimated to my new job, planning SharePoint Saturday New York City and Women in SharePoint plus trying to lead a normal life doing normal chores and hang out with my boyfriend.  What does this mean?  Well I’m trying to cut back to one or two events a month, which will include Heartland Developer Conference, Best Practices Conference, SPS Ozarks, SPS NYC (not speaking, running), and maybe SPS Denver and/or SPS East Bay.  So with the new job acclimation the blog suffers and twitter is getting less loven.  I’m only posting on twitter at night.  I will try to blog when I can as I see more 2010 and 2007 things that I find interesting to share.  I guess when you are a new employee you try to figure out what’s going on the first few months.  It’s really hard to post on SharePoint issue while that happens.  I’m really sorry guys and I will try harder to post at least a couple times a month (and maybe moderate comments  slightly better).  I hope that you all have a good weekend.

• Accessing Secure Web Services from ADF Mobile

  Most of the enterprise Web services you'll access are going to be secured - meaning they'll require you to pass a user/password in order to get to their data.  If you never created a secured Web service, it's simple in JDeveloper! For the below video I just right clicked on a Java class that I exposed as a Web service, and chose  "Web Service Properties" and then checked the "oracle/wss_username_token_service_policy" box from the list of options (that's the option supported by ADF Mobile right now): In the demo below we are going to use a "remote" login server that does the authentication of the user/pass.The easiest way to "create" a remote login server is to create a "regular" web ADF application, secure it, and deploy it on a server. The secured ADF application can just require ADF Authentication with a simple HTTP Basic Authentication - basically the next two images in the Application->Secure->Configure ADF Security menu wizard. ok - so now you have a secured ADF application - deploy it on a server and get the URL for that application.  From this point on you'll see the process in the video which deals with the configuration of your ADF Mobile app. First you'll need to enable security for your ADF mobile application, so it will prompt users to provide a user/pass combination. You'll also need to configure security on specific features. And you can have them use remote login pointing to your regular secured ADF application. Next define your Web service data control. Right click on the web service data control to "define Web Service Security". You'll also need to define the adfCredentialStoreKey property for the Web Service data control in the connections.xml file. This should be it. • How can I refresh/reinstall/clear/set-to-default my bootup process?

  I'm currently having a problem with my bootup process that is growing progressively worse as time goes on: While booting, it does a few minutes of hard-drive reading. During that, instead of showing a boot splash screen, it shows various dashes and dots, as if the video card isn't recognizing. The splash screen actually has colors similar to the splash screen (purple), it simply is garbled. It then does a few minutes of hard-drive reads, and if I leave it long enough, sometimes it boots into the desktop (and auto-logs-in). Sometimes, unfortunately, it just hangs on that garbled screen and reads from the hard-drive forever. Notably, I've also stopped being able to access grub during bootup (perhaps it is just not displayed correctly by the video, hard to tell). This is a symptom that has grown over the course of various ubuntu upgrades, at least I suspect that the upgrade process is leaving behind cruft. So, is there a safe way for me to "refresh" the boot system so that it is clean, new, fast, and reliable? For example, to test out a cleanly configured boot, make sure that it works (try before I buy), and then apply it to the system to eliminate as much of this problem as possible? • How to identify process that's sending error messages to terminal?

  The following error message occasionally appears in my terminal: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory ...which is pretty annoying. I have searched online for solutions to this error, without success. Is there any way to at least identify the process responsible for sending these error messages to my terminal? EDIT: Let me clarify that, as far as I can tell, these error messages appear "out of the blue". In fact, they appear asynchronously with respect to my interactions with the terminal (more often than not see them for the first time when I return to a terminal window that has been unattended for some time). I'm sure there's a definite, deterministic cause for these messages, but it is not one that I can readily identify. In short, I have not noticed any pattern or regularity to their occurrence. In particular, in my case their occurrence has nothing to do with running mplayer, or any other video playback program. (Please my earlier post about it here.) For one thing, the machine in question is a work machine, and I rarely watch any videos with it. In the very few instances in which I've watched a video on this machine I've used VLC, not mplayer, and these errors never appeared in these rare occasions that I used VLC.

• External display resolution issue

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I've 'dabbled' in the past but Windows was annoying me too much so I finally made the change. One thing I use my laptop for is outputting the screen onto an external monitor. In Windows this usually works fine (but when there is an issue, it's a pain to resolve and has crashed my computer on many occasions). In Ubuntu it's a very simple case of "plug and play" because it displays the content immediately with no major problems. However, I can only alter the resolution of the external display to 4:3 formats, whereas the external monitor is 16:9, so the picture is stretched. In Windows there's loads of resolutions to choose from. If I disable the laptop's screen, it still doesn't allow me to display the correct resolution externally (on VGA). Further to that, if I close the laptop it keeps the external screen as it is, but when I reopen the laptop, the laptop screen doesn't turn back on until I restart. If it's a video I am watching, I can use VLC to alter the aspect ratio so the video looks fine, but it's quite an annoying work around. I used terminal to find my graphics controller, which is "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)" (not great, I know... the laptop was a free gift with my mobile!) Any idea of how I can get the resolution on the external monitor to be correct?

• Is it possible to get xRandR to see two separate outputs with the nvidia driver?

  I have two monitors, which I have set up with nvidia-settings in Twinview. The result: When I want to do something in xRandR, it does not function. It doesn't report one output per video card head, but a single output mapped to the combined area of both monitors: rumtscho@bradbury:~$ xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 3840 x 1440, current 3840 x 1440, maximum 3840 x 1440 default connected 3840x1440+0+0 0mm x 0mm 3840x1440 50.0* Now I promised somebody to help test a driver. The developer is using an open source driver for Intel video cards, and his driver assumes that there is more than one xRandR output, each mapped to a monitor. So I tried rewriting my xorg.conf to somehow get two outputs to show up, but failed. Googling showed that people faced with the xRandR-nvidia problem either stopped using xRandR and achieved what they needed with nvidia-settings, or changed their driver to nouveau. The first is not going to help in my situation, and I am not willing to give up the proprietary driver, because Compiz won't work without it. So does anybody know a way to get nvidia to actually pass on information on outputs to xRandR?

  I have a wordpress blog and a www-website on the same domain for about one year. Together it is about 170 pages. The page rank is still 0. I understand that page rank 0 is a penalty for duplicate content. The pages are indexed in google but still no page rank. In google webmaster tools there is no indication for any problem. I asked for reconsideration of both blog and website a month ago. Google accepted the reconsideration but it did not change anything. Other pages of similar size and similar audience earn PR 4-6. Is there something I can do in order to get a fair page rank? A coworker told me that it might be the case that a link farm is using the content and I can do nothing about it. Is there a reliable way to check for something like that? I do not like to give up so quickly is there a chance to fix this by for example moving to another domain?

• Low Graphics and laggy screen after update to 13.10 from 13.04

  After updating from 13.04 to 13.10 many of 3D unity stuff has stopped working, I am suing Samsung Series 3 (NP350V5X) Laptop which has Switchable Intel and AMD Radeon HD 7670M GFX. xserver-xorg-video-ati does works but NO 3D support and graphics are very low. [I am currently using this] fglrx & fglrx-updates shows blank screen after Login. • Missing launcher after 12.04 upgrade

  I recently upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 and after doing some updates and such my application launcher and title bars (for window dialogues) are missing. Basically the entire unity GUI is missing! Not sure what happened so I installed gnome 3 and it was missing a launcher too, but did have title bars. In addition the bar found at the top that lets you know what's open and allows gnome extensions to be displayed is not interactive. I can't click, right click, alt + click (right or left), alt + super click (right or left) anywhere! I even installed an application menu from the gnome site and it is not interactive either. However, since there is no way to launch applications i have to use terminal and if i minimize an app it will disappear completely. Then i decided to try unity 2D and it is incredibly messed up. Black background, launcher is there but icons and top bar while on desktop are completely distorted. They're not just pixalated; they're all sorts of funky colors and when i open something from unity 2d launcher it will show it's opened in the launcher but nothing appears on my screen. When trying to view videos on youtube the video is distorted and looks just as unity 2d does. Strange enough: the audio works fine, just not videos. Pictures loads, but not ads that stream video. Any suggestions to get my launcher and the unity GUI back? I tried reinstalling gnome, unity 3d, and unity 2d from terminal. no change. also reinstalled unity desktop and tried resetting it: nothing happened.

• Ubuntu running like mud, system hangs and looks like its running at 3FPS

  the system specks: AMD XP 3200+ 1GB DDR 333 RAM 160 GB HD IDE NVIDIA FX 5500 AGP Video Card Compaq Presario sr1230nx the system takes forever to boot and when it does it runs like total mud, reminds me of an overloaded system that has too many windows open or something... fresh install tried soo many thing like new memory (it had 512 stick) a new video card (onboard 8mb sis sounded like the problem, but wasn't... has gotten a little faster now but not by much) tried to disable all the things on the motherboard that could be, with no help... this machine runs windows XP, 7, and 8 JUST FINE!!! I mean for a single core CPU WIN8 runs AWESOME!!! BUT I already have a Gaming Desktop that has Windows 8 pro I want a Linux machine to get some time in and learn a few things... I want Ubuntu because of the Software center so I can install things I want until I am familiar with the command line.. I've worked on Computers since I was 12 I remember some of the DOS commands but I guess these are a little different... anyway any ideas? Ive also tried both drivers for the NVIDA card and that didn't help either... its not the card since it did this with both the NVIDA card and the SIS onboard... it also does this on live mode with the USB so I don't think its the HardDrive... I'm running out of options of hardware to try... • More Denali Execution Plan Warning Goodies

  In my last blog, I showed how the execution plan in denali has been enhanced by 2 new warnings ,conversion affecting cardinality and conversion affecting seek, which are shown when a data type conversion has happened either implicitly or explicitly. That is not all though, there is more .  Also added are two warnings when performance has been affected due to memory issues. Memory spills to tempdb are a costly operation and happen when SqlServer is under memory pressure and needs to free some up. For a long time you have been able to see these as warnings in a profiler trace as a sort or hash warning event,  but now they are included right in the execution plan.  Not only that but also you can see which operator caused the spill , not just which statement.  Pretty damn handy. Another cause of performance problems relating to memory are memory grant waits.  Here is an informative write up on them,  but simply speaking , SQLServer has to allocate a certain amount of memory for each statement. If it is unable to you get a “memory grant wait”.  Once again there are other methods of analyzing these,  but the plan now shows these too. Don't worry that’s not real production code There is one other new warning that is of interest to me, “Unmatched Indexes”.  Once I find out the conditions under which that fires ill blog about it.

• How much effort is involved in moving a WordPress site to a private server? [on hold]

  I work in tech, but am on the business side. I have a WordPress site that I would like to move to a personal server and associate with a new domain name. I already have a server (actually, a friend is letting me use his) and the domain name. A friend-of-a-friend, who claims to be an IT pro, has agreed to help, but now is asking for what feels like a lot of money for what he says is a pretty time-intensive job. This doesn't sound right to me, so I thought I would ask here: Would it take months or even days to move the content, and why would it have to be moved in stages? The blog currently uses a basic template and has about 1000 posts. How much effort is really involved in moving a WordPress site from one server to another? Can anyone explain the process? • Where have I been for the last month?

  So, I have been pretty quiet for the last month or so. True, it has been holiday time and I went to Cape Town for a stunning week of sunshine and blue skies, but the second I got back home I spent the remainder of my holiday on my pc viewing tutorials on www.tekpub.com Craig Shoemaker, who I got in contact with because of his podcast, sent me a 1 month free subscription to the site and it has been really appreciated. I have done a lot of WPF programming in the past, but not any asp.net stuff and so I used the time to get a peek at asp.net mvc2 as well as a bunch of other technologies. I just wished I had more spare time to do the rest of the videos. While I didn’t understand all of what was being shown on the asp.net stuff (it required previous asp.net expertise), the site was a really good jump start to someone wanting to learn a new technology and broaden the horizons and I would highly recommend it, My only gripe is that in South Africa we have limited bandwidth and bandwidth speeds and so I spent a lot of my monthly bandwidth on the site and had to top up with my ISP several times because of the high quality video captures that the site did. I would have preferred to download the video’s, but apparently that is only available to people who have the yearly subscription fee. Other than that, great site and thanks a ton Craig!

• The Web Weekly Newsletter

  Several months ago I created a few FlipBoard magazines that a ton of developers (over 50,000!) have used to access content on JavaScript, HTML5, AngularJS, Azure, XAML, Web API, and more. While the feedback on the magazines has been super positive, several people have asked about having the content pushed to them. I’m generally too busy to remember to go check a particular link on a regular basis so I definitely understood and agree with the comments. I’m happy to announce a new newsletter I’m calling the Web Weekly. It’ll highlight content across the different FlipBoard magazines plus other sources and go out to subscribers a few times a month (weekly when possible). This script does not make any changes to your system, so it’s risk free and it produces a HTML formatted output showing which data corruption issues have been detected and provides the Doc ID’s that will be needed to fix them. This MGD diagnostic (version 120.92 and above) is even better than it used to be as it now checks for 11 new EBTax corruption signatures that Support was seeing on a consistent basis. • How to Install WebLogic 12c ZIP on Linux

  I knew that WebLogic had this small ZIP distribution, of only 184M, but what I didn't know was that it is so easy to install it on Linux machines, specially for development purposes, that I thought I had to blog about it. You may want to check this blog, where I found the missing part on this how to, but I'm blogging this again because I wanted to put it in a simpler way, straight to the point. And if you are looking for a how to for Mac, check Arun Gupta's post.  So, here's the step-by-step: 1 - Download the ZIP distribution (don't worry if your system is x86_64)Don't forget to accept the OTN Free Developer License Agreement! 2 - Choose where to install your WebLogic server and your domain, and set as your MW_HOME environment variableI will use /opt/middleware/weblogic for this how to export MW_HOME=/opt/middleware/weblogicMake sure this path exists in your system. 'mydomains' will be used to keep your WebLogic domain. mkdir -p $MW_HOME/mydomain 3 - If you don't have your JAVA_HOME environment variable still configured, do it. Point it to where your JDK is installed. export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/default-java 4 - Unzip the downloaded file into MW_HOME unzip wls1211_dev.zip -d $MW_HOME 5 - Go to that directory and run configure.sh cd $MW_HOME ./configure.sh 6 - Call the setEnvs.sh script . $MW_HOME/wlserver/server/bin/setWLSEnv.sh7 - Create your development domain. • OSB, Service Callouts and OQL

  Oracle Fusion Middleware customers use Oracle Service Bus (OSB) for virtualizing Service endpoints and implementing stateless service orchestrations. Behind the performance and speed of OSB, there are a couple of key design implementations that can affect application performance and behavior under heavy load. One of the heavily used feature in OSB is the Service Callout pipeline action for message enrichment and invoking multiple services as part of one single orchestration. Overuse of this feature, without understanding its internal implementation, can lead to serious problems. This series will delve into OSB internals, the problem associated with usage of Service Callout under high loads, diagnosing it via thread dump and heap dump analysis using tools like ThreadLogic and OQL (Object Query Language) and resolving it. The first section in the series will mainly cover the threading model used internally by OSB for implementing Route Vs. Service Callouts. The second section of the "OSB, Service Callouts and OQL" blog posting will delve into thread dump analysis of OSB server and detecting threading issues relating to Service Callout and using Heap Dump and OQL to identify the related Proxies and Business services involved. The final section of the series will focus on the corrective action to avoid Service Callout related OSB serer hangs.
