Trouble registering punycode domain!

Not sure if any of you have experience with this, but I am trying to include the anchor (?) in my domain name (using the appropriate punycode to allow it) but upon registering it I encounter the error that the symbol is not supported by the language I have chosen. Does anyone know what language would support this if I were to continue or even how I would go about doing so or if i can even do so. Thanks

PHP 5.2 to 5.3 not upgrading, no errors

I'm following this guide: http://atik97.wordpress.com/2010/06/12/how-to-upgrade-to-php-5-3-in-ubuntu-9-10/ I've done all the steps, but it's still showing php 5.2.6 - any ideas? PHP `virtual()` with Apache MultiViews not working after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04

I use PHP's virtual() directive quite a lot on one of my sites, including central elements. This worked fine for the last ~10 years -- but after upgrading (or rather moving, as it is on a new machine) to Ubuntu 12.04 it somehow got broken. Example setup (simplified) To make it easier to understand, I simplify some things (contents). So say I need a HTML fragment like <P>For further instructions, please look <A HREF='foobar'>here</P> in multiple pages. 10 years ago, I used SSI for that, so it is put into a file in a central place -- so if e.g. the targeted URL changes, I only need to update it in one place. To serve multiple languages, I have Apache's MultiViews enabled -- and at $DOCUMENT_ROOT/central/ there are the files: foobar.html (English variant, and the default) foobar.html.de (German variant). Now in the PHP code, I simply placed: <? virtual("/central/foobar"); ?> and let Apache take care to deliver the correct language variant. The problem As said, this worked fine for about 10 years: German visitors got the German variant, all others the English (depending on their preferred language). But after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, it no longer worked: Either nothing was delivered from the virtual() command, or (in connection with framesets) it even ended up in binary gibberish. Trying to figure out what happens, I played with a lot of things. I first thought MultiViews was (somehow) not available anymore -- but calling http://<server>/central/foobar showed the right variant, depending on the configured language preferences. This also proved there was nothing wrong with file permissions. The error.log gave no clues either (no error message thrown). Finally, just as a "last ressort", I changed the PHP command to <? virtual("central/foobar.html"); ?> -- and that very same file was in fact included. So PHP's virtual() function basically worked -- but the language dependend stuff obviously did no longer work together with it as it did before. Of course I tried to find some change (most likely in PHP's virtual() command), using Google a lot, and also searching the questions here -- unfortunately to no avail. Finally: The question Putting "design questions" aside (surely today I would design things differently -- but at least currently I miss the time to change that for a quite huge amount of pages): What can be done to make it work again? I surely missed something -- but I cannot figure out what...

How to avoid keyboard layout automatically changing on windows

I have two input languages in my language bar (windows xp). The problem is that windows likes changing between them without any intervention. That's really annoying! I know about the shortcuts and already turned off Word language detection, but the problem is everywhere (specially command prompt). I use both languages and I want to change between them only manually. How to turn off this automatic change?

Where can I request a new enhancement for Google Chrome?

I have a request for enhancement for Google Chrome, but don't know where to place it. I checked http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/list but it seems to be only for bugs. I use the spelling check quite often, but I need to swap between english and spanish all the time according to the website. Since chrome can detect the webpage language, it would be great to have the spell check set to that language by default.

Translation of default folder names in Windows

Windows (all versions) folders have their standard names such as Users, Documents, Local Settings etc that are unfortunately translated in other language versions, and thus instead of the names that are in the path to the folder they appear in the file explorer under quite different names. For example, instead Pictures I get "Moje obrazy" (translation into Polish language), and yet in the path it is still "pictures". This is very confusing and I would like to turn this automatic translation off, but can't find how.

I've got a copy of the Pulling Strings with Puppet book (written in 2007) but given that it has a bunch of equivocal language, I'm wonder how much has changed since then? I've found this Release Notes page and a (short) summery table at the top of the language tutorial but neither have dates, so I don't know where to start (and the more detailed notes make for rather dry reading). Does anyone know of a page that list thing that have changed since that book was published?

ASP.NET MVC Strongly Typed Partial View, gives could not load type error

I am attempting to create a strongly typed view with a "MVC View User Control" that is being rendered using Html.RenderPartial(). The top of my ascx file looks like this: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<System.Collections.IEnumerable<string>>" %> There is nothing else on this page, currently. When I execute the app and load the page that renders this control, I get the following error: Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<System.Collections.IEnumerable<string>>'. So, then I simplified it: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<String>" %> And then, just in case it needed to be fully qualified: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<System.String>" %> Everytime I get the same error (substituting type). what am I doing wrong here? I'm on .NET 3.5 with ASP.NET MVC 1.0 RTM.

Loading WPF satellite resources dynamically

Hello! I've read about satellite-assemblies being used in WPF localizations. However, I would like to ask if there is a way to load the satellite-assemblies without following the pre-defined directory structure that depends on the language (ex. If the system language is English, the WPF application looks for the satellite-assembly inside the "en-US" subfolder). This is because I would like to simply swap the satellite-assemblies when distributing the software package without having to create a specific folder per language that would hold the assemblies. I would just like to have the satellite-assembly and the main executable in the same directory. Is this possible and is there even an easy way to do this like simply loading the resource file on application startup once? Thanks!

MikTeX 2.8 doesn't add hyphenation support for pdfLaTeX

Using the standard LaTeX command they work fine, but when I try to use pdfLaTeX, they don't get loaded and I get the (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\magyar.ldf (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\babel.def) Package babel /b/c12/cWarning:/b/c0/c No hyphenation patterns were loaded for (babel) the language `Magyar' (babel) I will use the patterns loaded for \language=0 instead. message. Using latex it works fine: (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\latex\00miktex\bblopts.cfg) (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\magyar.ldf (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\babel.def))) I tried updating the FNDB and the Formats, but to no avail. Compile C# into objective-C

Now that monotouch is being banned, I was wondering if there is a way to translate C# (or some other modern language for that matter) into objective-C? I won't mind using apple's api as long as I don't have to declare my variables in 3-4 stages (ivar-property-synthesize-dealloc). All I want is a less wordy language to concentrate on my intent and not on the compiler syntax. unfortunately apple in its arrogance thinks objective-c is a "modern" language and if you are looking for an alternative (monotouch) it's because you are incapable of coding. also if you don't find programming in itunes; sorry, xcode enjoyable, it is not because there are better alternatives, it's because you are stupid. anyway back to my original question: can it be done?

C or C++ to write a compiler?

I want to write a compiler for a custom markup language, I want to get optimum performance and I also want to have a good scalable design. Multi-paradigm programming language (C++) is more suitable to implement modern design patterns, but I think that will degrade performance a little bit (think of RTTI for example) which more or less might make C a better choice. I wonder what is the best language (C, C++ or even objective C) if someone wants to create a modern compiler (in the sense of complying to modern software engineering principles as a software) that is fast, efficient, and well designed.

I never really understood: what is CGI?

CGI is a Comman Gateway Interface. As the name says, it is a "common" gateway interface for everything. It is so trivial and naive from the name. I feel that I understood this and I felt this every time I encountered this word. But frankly, I didn't. I'm still confused. I am a PHP programmer. I did lot of web development. user (client) request for page --- webserver(-embedded PHP interpreter) ---- Server side(PHP) Script --- MySQL Server. Now say my PHP Script can fetch results from MySQL Server && MATLAB Server && Some other server. So, now PHP Script is the CGI? because its interface for the between webserver & All other servers? I don't know. Sometimes they call CGI, a technology & othertimes they call CGI a program or someother server. What exactly is CGI? Whats the big deal with /cgi-bin/*.cgi? Whats up with this? I don't know what is this cgi-bin directory on the server for. I don't know why they have *.cgi extensions. Why does Perl always comes in the way. CGI & Perl (language). I also don't know whats up with these two. Almost all the time I keep hearing these two in combination "CGI & Perl". This book is another great example CGI Programming with Perl Why not "CGI Programming with PHP/JSP/ASP". I never saw such things. CGI Programming in C this confuses me a lot. in C?? Seriously?? I don't know what to say. I"m just confused. "in C"?? This changes everything. Program needs to be compiled and executed. This entirely changes my view of web programming. When do I compile? How does the program gets executed (because it will be a machine code, so it must execute as a independent process). How does it communicate with the web server? IPC? and interfacing with all the servers (in my example MATLAB & MySQL) using socket programming? I'm lost!! They say that CGI is depreciated. Its no more in use. Is it so? What is its latest update? Once, I ran into a situation where I had to give HTTP PUT request access to web server (Apache HTTPD). Its a long back. So, as far as I remember this is what I did: Edited the configuration file of Apache HTTPD to tell webserver to pass all HTTP PUT requests to some put.php ( I had to write this PHP script) Implement put.php to handle the request (save the file to the location mentioned) People said that I wrote a CGI Script. Seriously, I didn't have clue what they were talking about. Did I really write CGI Script? I hope you understood what my confusion is. (Because I myself don't know where I'm confused). I request you guys to keep your answer as simple as possible. I really can't understand any fancy technical terminology. At least not in this case. EDIT: I found this amazing tutorial "CGI Programming Is Simple!" - CGI Tutorial Which explains the concepts in simplest possible way. I've only have one complaint about this tutorial. Just to make what ever he explained complete he should have shown the C code he used for generating response for those GET / POST requests. I have had some problems with authentication in ASP.NET. I'm not used most of the built in authentication in .NET. I gotten some complaints from users using Internet Explorer (any version - may affect other browsers as well) that the login process proceeds but when redirected they aren't authenticated and are bounced back to loginpage (pages that require authentication check if logged in and if not redirect back to loginpage). Can this be a cookie problem? Do I need to check if cookies are enabled by the user? What's the best way to build authentication if you have a custom member table and don't want to use ASP.NET login controls? How to overide the behavior of Input type="file" Browse button

Hi All, I need to change the locale/language of the browse button in input type="file" We have a special function to change the locale of any text to the browser language such as en-US es-MX etc. Say changeLang("Test"); //This will display test in spanish if the browser locale is es-MX What I need to do is to change the language of the browse button. Since it is not displayed, I can't code it like changeLang("Browse..."); That's why I need to get the code of this input type and overide so that I can apply my funtion to Browse text. I know this is not a programming question. Let's try to label it a programming community question so that it doesn't get closed. I've been wondering what makes the programming community so prone to helping others in stackoverflow. Is this something particular to programmers? Do you think lawyers and accountants would help other lawyers and programmers as we do? What makes you come back to stackoverflow every day? It would be great to have an answer per reason so that we can get the list of reasons. In my case, I come to stackoverflow to ask questions that I can't solve quickly, and to test how good I am when answering questions. So far I’ve failed miserably at trying to answer questions but it has helped me understand how little I know.

How to write a linter?

In my day job I, and others on my team write a lot of hardware models in Verilog-AMS, a language supported primarily by commercial vendors and a few opensource simulator projects. One thing that would make supporting each others code more helpful would be a LINTER that would check our code for common problems and assist with enforcing a shared code formatting style. I of course want to be able to add my own rules and, after I prove their utility to myself, promote them to the rest of the team.. I don't mind doing the work that has to be done, but of course also want to leverage the work of other existing projects. Does having the allowed language syntax in a yacc or bison format give me a leg up? or should I just suck each language statement into a perl string, and use pattern matching to find the things I don't like? (most syntax and compilation errors are easily caught by the commercial tools.. but we have some of our own extentions.)
