  • Why Does Private Access Remain Non-Private in .NET Within a Class?

    While cleaning some code today written by someone else, I changed the access modifier from Public to Private on a class variable/member/field. I expected a long list of compiler errors that I use to "refactor/rework/review" the code that used this variable. Imagine my surprise when I didn't get any errors. After reviewing, it turns out that another instance of the Class can access the private members of another instance declared within the Class. Totally unexcepted. Is this normal? I been coding in .NET since the beginning and never ran into this issue, nor read about it. I may have stumbled onto it before, but only "vaguely noticed" and move on. Can anyone explain this behavoir to me? Am I doing something wrong? I found this behavior in both C# and VB.NET. The code seems to take advantage of the ability to access private variables.   • Why does Color.IsNamedColor not work when I create a color using Color.FromArgb()?

    In my app I allow the user to build a color, and then show him the name or value of the color later on. If the user picks red (full red, not red-ish), I want to show him "red". If he picks some strange color, then the hex value would be just fine. Here's sample code that demonstrates the problem: static string GetName(int r, int g, int b) { Color c = Color.FromArgb(r, g, b); // Note that specifying a = 255 doesn't make a difference if (c.IsNamedColor) { return c.Name; } else { // return hex value } } Even with very obvious colors like red IsNamedColor never returns true. Looking at the ARGB values for my color and Color.Red, I see no difference. However, calling Color.Red.GetHashCode() returns a different hash code than Color.FromArgb(255, 0, 0).GetHashCode(). How can I create a color using user specified RGB values and have the Name property come out right?

  • Lua: Why changing value on one variable changes value on an other one too?

    I think that running this code you will get excactly what I mean. I want to register 5 names to a register(people). I loop 5 times and in each loop I have a variable newPerson which is supposed to save all information about a person and then be added to the people register. In this example only the names of the people are being registered for simplicity. The problem is that in the end all people turn to have the same name: "Petra". I playied a bit with this but can't get a reasonable reason for this behaviour.   • Why do external Java libraries paths have to be refreshed in eclipse between starts?

    For my school projects, I use the joda-time API for generating timestamps that are used for file names and logging. Getting eclipse to recognize the library is no problem. However, when I start eclipse between reboots, I get the red X in the project tree because the external API cannot be found, even though the file path has not changed. So each time, I have to go to the Libraries tab in Build Path to re-target the API. Frankly, this is getting to be a PIMA. So is there any way to have the path be permanent, so I don't have to do the Build Path rigmarole all the time?

  • Applying attribute to SVG using JS prompts 'this.textBox.style is undefined'. Why?

    Hi, I'm using the following code to draw an SVG text box, and then change its text anchor attribute to 'left' as it defaults to center and that's nasty. The text generates correctly, but when I add this second line I get the error 'this.textBox.style is undefined' in my error console.   • Why people don't use LabView for purposes other than data acquisition and virtualization?

    This is marked as a subjective question, I hope I won't get too many down votes though. LV seems to offer a nice graphic alternative to traditional text based programming. As I understand, it's not a just-virtualization/data acquisition programming language. Nonetheless, it seems to have that paradigm pegged to its creator's name. My question comes up because it doesn't seem to be widely used for multi-purpose applications. I'm not a LV-expert of any kind, I'm more like a learner. I'm still getting used to LV.

First trials indicated that the non-threaded version was faster. My first thought was that the dimensions were too small to notice a difference, and it was taking longer to create the threads. So I upped the dimensions to about 50x50, randomly filled, and ran it, and I'm still not seeing any performance upgrade with the threaded version. What am I missing here?

  • Why does my Perl regular expression only find the last occurrence?

    I have the following input to a Perl script and I wish to get the first occurrence of NAME="..." strings in each of the <table>...</table> structures. The entire file is read into a single string and the regex acts on that input. However, the regex always returns the last occurrence of NAME="..." strings. Can anyone explain what is going on and how this can be fixed?   • Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

    We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output.   • Why is Core Data not persisting these changes to disk?

    I added a new entity to my model and it loads fine but no changes made in memory get persisted to disk. My values set on the car object work fine in memory but aren't getting persisted to disk on hitting the home button (in simulator). I am using almost exactly the same code on another entity in my application and its values persist to disk fine (core data - sqlite3); Does anyone have a clue what I'm overlooking here? Car is the managed object, cars in an NSMutableArray of car objects and Car is the entity and Visible is the attribute on the entity which I am trying to set. Thanks for you assistance.     This slider is possessed: When I move the slider thumb left or right, it leaves the original image there (creating an extra image). This doesn't happen every time and the only consistency i've noticed is that it's inconsistent. When the table is in "Editing mode" it is more likely to create a duplicate thumb image, but it also does so in regular mode.     I have been reading page after page after page about the benefits of using YUM package installer and how NOBODY should built installs from source files (which again makes no sense to me) yet the repositories and source builders always package files in Tarball format, leaving a TON of work (which usually ends up going wrong) to the individual instead of formatting SRPMs for the end user.
