  I have installed Tomcat on windows XP through the Tomcat installer. I have installed JDK 1.6. • Best way to restrict FTP access to a single directory?

  I have a VPS running Ubuntu 10.04, and I'd like to give someone SFTP access to a single directory, but prevent them from seeing anything else on the system. What's the best way to pull this off? I considered removing "everyone" permissions from everything on the system, but that seems like a really blunt tool for this problem (and one that'll cause other issues) - I'm hoping there's a better option here. Edit: I appreciate the answers! (And I learned a bunch reading/researching through them).   On Windows Server 2003, and some other versions of Windows, the Properties > Security tab of a folder's or file's context menu provides "Allow" and "Deny" options for "Full Control," "Modify," "Read" and other permissions (graphic provided). After clicking "Full Control," all boxes in the column — except for "Special Permissions" — get automatically checked. What's the difference between checking "Full Control" and just checking all the other boxes individually? Are there hidden/advanced permissions toggled by "Full Control" that aren't listed in the main permissions window? Is "Full Control" just a convenience shortcut?

• Odd behavior of permissions and icons

  After some virus had infected my Windows 7, I did a complete format and re-installed the OS. I was just installing applications and copying back some data when I noticed some shortcuts changing their icons to something I couldnt recognize (Yellow icons in the image below). Also, a few exe files which previously did not ask for User permission, are now asking for it. Wondering if this is an icon cache problem, I cleared the cache by deleting the IconCache.db in AppData/Local but the problem still persists. Although I did a full system scan with MS Security Essentials, I'm not sure if this is another virus or some other problem. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Edit: Now even Firefox needs permissions to launch. It's icon hasnt changed, but it's got the 'shield' overlay on it like the other yellow icons.

• IIS7.5 Domain Account Application Pool Identity for SQL Server Authentication

  In Windows Server 2003/IIS6 land we typically create an app pool that runs as the identity of an AD account created with minimal privileges simply for that purpose. This same domain user would also be granted access to SQL Server so that any ASP.NET application in that app pool would be able to connect to SQL Server with Integrated Security=SSPI. We are making a brave move to the world of Windows Server 2008 R2/IIS7.5 and are looking to replicate this model, but I am struggling with how to make the application pool in IIS7.5 run as the identity of an AD account? I know this sounds simple and hopefully it is, but my attempts so far have been fruitless. Should the application pool identity be a 'Custom account' for a domain account? Does the domain account need to be added to any groups?

• WAN and LAN setup for IPv6

  We just got a IPv6 /48 range (a gateway and an IP address) for our company, but I'm unsure about how to set it up. We use FreeBSD 8.4 (pfSense 2.1) as a router/firewall. Currently we have IPv4 setup with a WAN towards the internet, and a NAT-ed LAN behind it for office PCs. We want to keep the LAN network for security, and we want IPv6 addresses from the /48 for all office PCs (without NAT). The WAN is configured with the IPv6 gateway 1111:2222:3333::1/48 and interface address 1111:2222:3333::2/48. But when it's configured this way, I guess it's impossible to fit the LAN on a /64 within the /48? I believe I should configure the WAN subnet on 1111:2222:3333:1::/64 and the LAN on a subnet like 1111:2222:3333:2::/64. Is this something I can configure myself, or do I have to ask the ISP to configure that routing for me?

  I´m a noobie so please be patient ! I developed an app using C# and SQL Server Express 2012 with a local database, my connection string is"Data Source=localhost ; Initial Catalog = scalnet ; Integrated Security=SSPI; Trusted_Connection=Yes"; Everything worked ok till the time I made a setup and tried to install my app in another computer. My first question is: - What version of SQL should I install is this machine? it should be as ligth as possible. - I tried to install SQL exprees 2012 but it gives me an error when I execute my app "A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a ..... (provider:Named Pipes Provider, error:40 - Could not open a connection to SQL server." This probably should be a problem with the server configuration but I have no ideia how to solve this... • Snow Leopard Windows 7 File sharing issue

  Hello, wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on how to fix this issue in file sharing between Snow Leopard and Windows 7. On my home network, I have a system running windows 7 which acts as a file server: \WINDOWS7-A\SHARE I also have an IMac which can access the file share most of the time.... however now comes the problem, as soon as I introduce my Windows 7 Laptop and copy files over from it onto the file server (\Windows7-A), the file server become no longer accessible from the Snow Leopard machine... I assume this somehow has to do with elevated security on the network share having been negotiated between the 2 Windows 7 machines which is no longer allowing the Mac to see the Windows machines... but not sure how to disable this, as the only way I can restore communication between the mac and the Windows 7 machine is to restart it... less than ideal... Any suggestions would be welcome.

• Can't rename folders in Window 7/32bit after anti-virus change

  I recently started having the common, as I realized, problem of not being able to rename folders in Windows 7 (32 bit). I don't understand why it happened after almost a year of ideal use of Windows 7. I haven't removed the libraries nor can I think of anything else that could potentially cause this, at least as far as I know. The only thing I did recently was to change my anti-virus program from the freeware version of Avira to the freeware anti-virus Microsoft Security Essentials. Any idea on what the problem is and how to fix this?

• What is the best way to get the external internet gateway IP reported periodically?

  I have a OS X Server behind an airport extreme, serving services via opened ports on the airport. The server has a 10.0.x.x local address, always the same one. The airport extreme gets it's external IP address via PPPoE, and sometimes... once a week it changes. For security reasons WE ACTUALLY like this behavior. But i need a way to know the external IP address just in case i need to connect and do something to the server while on the outside. What can i do?

• Group Policy dealing with IE zone assignment not sticking!

  I have a group policy (which ONLY deals with the zone assignment) -that is continually switching on and off with reboots. I thought it was a conflicting group policy but when I run group policy modeling report it doesn't show any descrepancies that I can see. I thought it may be an issue with one domain controller wasn't replicating my policy change to the other one, but this isn't the case. I checked both domain controllers and they show the same information. The assignment is on a user basis and is in: user configuration > administrative templates > windows components > internet explorer > internet control panel > security and is site to zone assignment.

• Excel 2010 -Excel cannot complete this task with available resources

  Getting this error when trying to sort a document (Excel cannot complete this task with available resources). Document isn't particularly large, about 4,000 lines. Can't seem to figure out why this would start on this. I can sort this same file fine on everything back to Excel 2000 on older crappy computers. Computer is running Win 7 x64, 16 Gb RAM, and another 16 Gb of virtual. There's no possible way that all of the memory is actually getting exhausted when I can perform this on an older XP machine with 512 Mb of RAM, unless 2010's memory usage is inconceivably poorly designed. I found a few posts on forums stating that there might be a security update related bug. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  Four domain users are part of global security group [email protected] running on Windows Server 2008 Standard and Exchange 2007 as a mail non universal group. Our goal is to create an auto-responder rule, or template that fires at sender. I have created a mail-enabled public folder, with owner permissions for each group member. I have also set up a rule template (response) and I am a little unclear as to the send as permission set, or where to set that up. Can someone please tell me if I am on the right track? Will I have to do each Outlook client machine (whole group!) the same?

• UNC access to TFS SharePoint doesn't work

  We are using TFS2010 with the SharePoint document portal. We are trying to access the files in SharePoint using UNC paths (e.g. \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject) and it just plain doesn't work. From my workstation, I actually get different behaviours depending on the path. Case 1: Path = \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: windows explorer reports a network error "Windows cannot access \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\" Case 2: Path = \tfs2010.mycompany.com\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: Windows Security dialog pops up asking for my username and password. I tried entering all combinations of my windows username and password (with and without the domain before the username), but no matter what, my credentials are not accepted. I have no problems accessing the SharePoint site through the web portal - it's just UNC which doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the event viewer on the server. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Even when I try to access in directly: localhost/logo.png Im getting an 403 Forbidden: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /logo.png on this server. Solutions I have tried are: 1. Using icacls to grant priviledge 2. manually set the permission by right clicking the image and editing the security. php, html and other files are loading in the browser, but not images. • Let a program (called by other program) run as admin without prompt

  As you may know, Steam doesn't like no-admin accounts for installing games or whatsoever. In my case, I have a user in my computer that usually install a lot of games and every time I have to put my password to successfully play them. Blame, /bin/SteamService.exe. I came up with a solution: using RunAs to make Steam run as the admin user. But that is a potential security risk. So instead of that, I'm asking if is possible to do the following: Hot to run SteamService.exe with high trust levels (or admin privileges) automatically when Steam calls it? That way he can play and install games in Steam leaving the rest of the system alone. I don't mind if the user has to click "yes or no", but without prompt its better because some games asks every time they're executed.

• Using Dropbox API instead of a FTP server.

  This is a small aplication scenario. Usually, when you have to do some backups of source code/database on your server, you use a second ftp server, a cronjob to tar.gz your db dumps and source files, and send this file to your ftp server from your application server. Dropbox created an API to use it's infrastrucutre. Since they provide 2gb for free accounts, I thought about being able to upload to it instead of a ftp server. So, if you do some freelance work, you can create a free account for each client and use this approach, maybe encrypting the files you send. You even gain a revision for each sent file, like a revison control system, for free, from the last 30 days. What do you think of this approach? Is it possible? And, more importantly: what are the security risks involved? (That's why I'm asking this on serverfault, since this POV from sysadmins will be more accurate). Thanks!

Somehow i can go to some web pages, but i cant login to them, for example www.buzzerbeater.com, i cant access my hotmail/msn, outlook doesnt work either, also www.realgm.com, i cant access the forums too. I have tried with IE7/Firefox/Chrome, but same result. I was using avast free edition that i removed, and i dont have any other security software installed. My laptop from the same network works perfectly. Any ideas?

In order to read them you have to provide the pass phrases. Server 127.0.0.1:443 (RSA) Enter pass phrase: I've already worked out how to remove the pass phrase from the key file in question, but I can't find any information anywhere on how to determine which key file Apache is complaining about in the above dialog. I have dozens of key files on the server in question, although I don't know which ones are in active use (all I did is 'locate .pem' and ignore the false positives). Does anyone know how to track down which pem file I need to remove the passphrase from?

• SFTP not working, but SSH is

  I've had a server running CentOS for a few months now. A few days ago, I stopped being able to connect to it over SFTP. I've tried from multiple computers, OSes, clients, and internet connections. I can SSH in just fine, though. For example, Nautilus gives me this: Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. Please select another viewer and try again. I was under the impression that SFTP was just pure SSH, and if one worked, the other would, and vice-versa. Clearly that's not the case, though. What could I have done wrong?

• Forced to use Outlook Web Access, what are my options?

  My company just enforced an OWA update and disabled IMAP and POP3 access. I don't want to use the webmail, do I have any options? Forwarding is also disabled. I also don't look forward to installing thunderbird or anything else, which is what colleagues are doing. I'd be interested in running some sort of automation script that either forwards the emails, or notifies me somehow that there has been some activity. Disclaimer: This does not concern any illegal activity, as I work at a school. They are not explicitly preventing me from circumventing their bogus security imposition and have given me permission to do so, 'if I can find a way'. Which of course makes me want to do it even more.
