• Is there a Tool for see files created with binary serialization?

  I've working without problems serializating object graphs to and from files. Everything was fine until today: A dictionary, created in a constructor and NEVER deleted, was lost (null referece) just after deserialization from file, for the first time in more than a year doing the same without troubles. So, is there a Software Tool to look into binary serialization content showing a human/developer-readable version (a la Reflector) of what is stored? AKA: How to analyze (easy, no binary to IL translation. That would take months) binary serialized content? Thanks!

• CellTable + AsyncListViewAdapter<T>, stuck at 'loading' when paging

  Hi I'm trying to make CellTable, AsyncListViewAdapter<T> and SimplePager<T> working together. I managed to display my data, but whenever I click either "go to start" or "go to end" button I get that 'loading' indicator which stays there till the end of days. ( AsyncListViewAdapter<T>.onRangeChanged doesn't even get called this time.) As I have only single row in my data those two buttons should be (and appear to be) disabled. I went through the code-snippets in this thread, but I can't see nothing suspicions in what I've been doing. Is there some obvious answer to a rookie mistake? • Memory corruption in System.Move due to changed 8087CW mode (png + stretchblt)

  I have strange a memory corruption problem. After many hours debugging and trying I think I found something. For example: I do a simple string assignment: sTest := 'SET LOCK_TIMEOUT '; However, the result sometimes becomes: sTest = 'SET LOCK'#0'TIMEOUT ' So, the _ gets replaced by an 0 byte. I have seen this happening once (reproducing is tricky, dependent on timing) in the System.Move function, when it uses the FPU stack (fild, fistp) for fast memory copy (in case of 9 till 32 bytes to move): ... @@SmallMove: {9..32 Byte Move} fild qword ptr [eax+ecx] {Load Last 8} fild qword ptr [eax] {Load First 8} cmp ecx, 8 jle @@Small16 fild qword ptr [eax+8] {Load Second 8} cmp ecx, 16 jle @@Small24 fild qword ptr [eax+16] {Load Third 8} fistp qword ptr [edx+16] {Save Third 8} ... • Will VC++ MFC become obsolete in near future?

  Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI development slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well? How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

I assume that this is the reason for the latter error that I don't have a database configuration.   Hmm I have a application in flex (codebase around 20K lines) ... its sort of a social network meets digg kind of thing, I need to add more features to it. This is my first ever flex project. Now im in a dilemma as to whether to refactor or rewrite the application. Im having a lot of trouble understanding the existing code (there is no documentation and the original developer is missing!!). • Why does a port occasionally stop listening? This happens only on occasion

  I have a Windows Service written in C# that listens on port 8591. I also have a web application hosted in IIS on the same server that makes request to the service. On occasion the port will stop listening and throws the following error: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8591". This happened 3 times in 2 months and just resolves itself. I can also fix it manually by restarting the service. I'm wondering if any one else has run into this problem and has possible suggestions to resolve. I'm a developer and have worked with our windows group extensively and they assure me there is no firewall or AV blocking the port on occasion. This is running on Windows Server 2008 R2. Very puzzled at what could be causing this to happen. Please let me know if you need more information.

• [IE 7/8] Loading HTML content in via Javascript nulls my <title> tag in some instances

  This is an Explorer only problem and the symptoms are: I have links that when clicked will load in HTML chunks (none of which contain html header tags) using javascript. The html chunks are placed in various <div>s around the page, perhaps 3 different places with 3 different chunks brought in via javascript. When these chunks load in the <title> tag of the page gets set to <title></title> for some unknown (to me) reason. I've used the IE developer toolbar to confirm this by inspecting the DOM tree. I have other pages that do similar things but it does not seem to be a problem there.

• Massive speed diff in upgrade to Java 7

  We use Java within our build process, as it is used to resolve/publish our dependencies via Ivy. No problem, nor have we had with it for 2 years, until we've tried to upgrade Java 6 Update 26 to Version 7 Update 7, whereas a build on a local developer PC (WinXP) now takes 2 hours to complete, instead of 10 minutes!! Nothing else has changed on the PC, making it the absolute target for our concerns. Does anyone know of any reason as to why version 7 of Java would make such a speed difference like this?

• Is naming a software product the same as a book legally problematic?

  I came up with a name for a software product I'm developing. It's composed of two common English words put together (for example, Firefox, Silverlight, etc.). I Googled the name to see if it was being used by any other software product before committing to it. After finding none, I did notice that there is a book published around 60 years ago, by that same name. Would it be legally problematic to name my software product as such, or does it being a software product vs a book make it irrelevant? PS - I know this isn't really a programming question, but naming is related to software development, isn't it? ;) PPS - How do companies like Microsoft get away with naming things "Windows" and "Office"? Or are they just legally called "Microsoft Windows" and "Microsoft Office"? Do developer names always precede software product names? Would naming a software product "Jones Office" be illegal?

• Best practices for using Hg with Grails?

  What should I check in/not check in? Since many of the files are sometimes auto-generated I'm not entirely sure how to handle this using version control...does it have something to do with tags? For instance in ANT, I know not to check-in my target/bin directories...but Grails adds another level of confusion to this...since some of code is generated and some of it is not. (It may become clearer as I go...but it seems to be that there needs to be some way of being able to tell what was just generated and what was modified by a developer so that it needs to be placed in version control)

  I have an Oracle function that dynamically creates an XML document, and returns it in a SYS.XMLTYPE value. I want to run a query from SQL Developer that calls that function and prints the document (either via a select, or dbms_output - I don't care). But all the examples/documentation seem to refer to querying XML columns in tables, and I can't seem to get the syntax right for my particular usage. I'd like something like this: declare x SYS.XMLTYPE; begin x := my_package.my_function(); select x.getclobval() from x; -- doesn't work! end; How can I print out the value of the XML type variable 'x' in the above code?

• Visual Studio 2010 ClickOnce prerequisites from same location

  I'm using clickonce publishing and want to require .net 3.5 framework and others as prerequisites. I have selected the option to download the prerequisites from same folder as my app. I've also placed the .net 3.5 redistributable exe in the folder on the server where the app will be published. I publish by FTP over the internet to the server where the users are. However, VS will not let me publish saying it can't find the prerequisites on disk. Does this mean I have to have the prerequisites installed somewhere on my developer machine and that those files will all be uploaded by FTP to the server everytime I publish a new version to the server? That would be a huge amount of data to upload over my slow DSL upload link. Any insight?

• C2360 compiler error on TFS build, but not on desktop

  A c++ code snippet similar to the code below caused our TFS build to fail with a C2360 compiler error. switch (i) { case 0 : for each (int n in a) System::Console::WriteLine(n.ToString()); break; case 1 : System::Console::WriteLine("n is not in scope here"); break; } This is fixed by using {} brackets within the body of case 0, as below: switch (i) { case 0 : { for each (int n in a) System::Console::WriteLine(n.ToString()); } break; case 1 : System::Console::WriteLine("n is not in scope here"); break; } The developer had successfully compiled the code on their desktop before committing the changes. A cursory look at versions of things like compilers, Visual Studio etc on the server and desktop suggest they are the same. The source code is the same, obviously. What is the difference between a desktop build and TFS build that would smother a compiler error like this?

  I have a php program that has been written keeping in mind a single server, so there are inherent limitation to how much it can handle. For example, the developer says that his current webhosting service provides him with "50 mysql connections" which he interprets as that only 50 people can be simultaneously logged onto it. What do we need to do if we want to scale it up so it can handle a load of 500 or more? How can we adapt this program to a "load balancer" with minimal changes? The application is writen in php and uses mysql.

But I don't know if I want all developer machines to beusing s3 for storage of all our test and dev images. Maybe it's not an issue -- but it seems like a waste to have everyone storing all our images in s3. I've heard of some ppl who store images on s3 'hacking' dev environments to store images locally on the file system -- and then using s3 in prod only. What are other people doing?

• Generating Dynamic web pages without server side scripting

  Hi guys, I am trying to control a media device which has lot of multimedia content that it can play using another device(remote control device) like an ipad connected to the LAN. (UPnP) I want the media device to be able to send the content listing to the remote device so that it will be rendered as a webpage on the remote controller. And actions on the webpages needs to be sent to the the device as commands to execute (like play, pause, next etc). The media device is an embedded device, hence can't have any server side scripting, all has to be done on the client side. I want the page rendered to be HTML5. So, is it possible to generate dynamic HTML5 pages using just client side scripting? Thanks a lot. I am an embedded systems developer hence clueless about the web designing stuff.

• iPhone: Setup static content of UITableView

  This guide from apple https://developer.apple.com/iphone/prerelease/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/TableView_iPhone/TableViewCells/TableViewCells.html (you need login) explains how to use "The Technique for Static Row Content" to use Interface Builder to setup the cells in a tableview. I have some cells with different heights in my tableview. Without using the heightForRowAtIndexPath method everything get messed up. Do I still need to use this method or can I in some way setup the height of the cells inside the IB as I created them there? Also when using the "The Technique for Static Row Content" from the guide you still need to use the cellForRowAtIndexPath to setup the cells even if they are created in IB. I would like to setup the full layout of the tableview with all cells in IB (drag the cells right into the tableview), is that possible in some way? Thanks!

• Asp.net Site on GoDaddy Loads Slowly

  I just published a very small site to GoDaddy that I programmed in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008. The site only contains 6 sheets, none of which are data intensive. Each has a few small images that serve mostly to navigate to the other sheets. There is no data, no SQL, nothing like that. There is one master page that governs the page layout for all of the pages. Everything works fine, for the most part. I am posting because the site loads quite slowly, particularly considering how little content is being loaded. Can anybody give me any advice about what I should look at to speed this thing up a little bit? Is this an asp.net issue? Use of master pages? Godaddy? Something else? I'm a newbie, so speak slowly. Is this just a difference in versions of Interface Builder? Where did it go?

• Using new Image().src for click tracking

  I am attempting to figure out why this click tracker isn't working. The code was written by another developer so I am not entirely sure if this ever did work. function trackSponsor(o, p) { (new Image()).src = PATH_BASE + 'click/' + p + '/' + o + "?_cache=" + (+(new Date())); return false; } From what I can gather is that when this function is called it 'creates a new image' to fire a php script asynchronously. According to Firebug, the request is made however it is 'aborted' ~30ms in. The odd thing is that it will 'sometimes' work as in 1 in every 10+ regardless of the browser. I would much rather fix this so that it works instead of re-writing it as an ajax request. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• How do I safely Debug.Assert in ASP.NET?

  Asserts can't be caught. This is good because some errors I don't want to be wrapped in try/catch, at least not on the development server. But Asserts seem awefully dangerous.
