• Flash animations doesn't work

  I have a following problem: I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on my Athlon 1800+ + 1 GB RAM + Nvidia Geforce4 MMX 440 (pretty old configuration) and everything works just fine except Flash Player in my Web browser (tried Firefox and Chromium). Instead of movie/animation, I get blank space. I updated my system via update manager, checked the plugins (everything OK), installed and updated flash player one more time, installed Ubuntu restricted extras, tried Firefox's Flash Aid, even tried Youtube Html 5 (still the same result)... Please, help me! I enjoy working with Linux and Ubuntu is the first that works for me well (after Open Suse and Fedora) but I have no idea what is wrong now...

• Introduction to LinqPad Driver for StreamInsight 2.1

  We are announcing the availability of the LinqPad driver for StreamInsight 2.1. The purpose of this blog post is to offer a quick introduction into the new features that we added to the StreamInsight LinqPad driver. We’ll show you how to connect to a remote server, how to inspect the entities present of that server, how to compose on top of them and how to manage their lifetime. Installing the driver Info on how to install the driver can be found in an earlier blog post here. Establishing connections As you click on the “Add Connection” link in the left pane you will notice that now it’s possible to build the data context automatically. The new driver appears as an option in the upper list, and if you pick it you will open a connection dialog that lets you connect to a remote StreamInsight server. The connection dialog lets you specify the address of the remote server. You will notice that it’s possible to pick up the binding information from the configuration file of the LinqPad application (which is normally in the same folder as LinqPad.exe and is called LinqPad.exe.config). In order for the context to be generated you need to pick an application from the server. The control is editable hence you can create a new application if you don’t want to make changes to an existing application. If you choose a new application name you will be prompted for confirmation before this gets created. Once you click OK the connection is created and you can start issuing queries against the remote server. If there’s any connectivity error the connection is marked with a red X and you can see the error message informing you what went wrong (i.e., the remote server could not be reached etc.). The context for remote servers Let’s take a look at what happens after we are connected successfully. Every LinqPad query runs inside a context – think of it as a class that wraps all the code that you’re writing. If you’re connecting to a live server the context will contain the following: The application object itself. All entities present in this application (sources, sinks, subjects and processes). The picture below shows a snapshot of the left pane of LinqPad after a successful connection. Every entity on the server has a different icon which will allow users to figure out its purpose. You will also notice that some entities have a string in parentheses following the name. It should be interpreted as such: the first name is the name of the property of the context class and the second name is the name of the entity as it exists on the server. Not all valid entity names are valid identifier names so in cases where we had to make a transformation you see both. Note also that as you hover over the entities you get IntelliSense with their types – more on that later. Remoting is not supported As you play with the entities exposed by the context you will notice that you can’t read and write directly to/from them. If for instance you’re trying to dump the content of an entity you will get an error message telling you that in the current version remoting is not supported. This is because the entity lives on the remote server and dumping its content means reading the events produced by this entity into the local process. ObservableSource.Dump(); Will yield the following error: Reading from a remote 'System.Reactive.Linq.IQbservable`1[System.Int32]' is not supported. Use the 'Microsoft.ComplexEventProcessing.Linq.RemoteProvider.Bind' method to read from the source using a remote observer. This basically tells you that you can call the Bind() method to direct the output of this source to a sink that has to be defined on the remote machine as well. You can’t bring the results to the LinqPad window unless you write code specifically for that. Compose queries You may ask – what's the purpose of all that? After all the same information is present in the EventFlowDebugger, why bother with showing it in LinqPad? First of all, What gets exposed in LinqPad is not what you see in the debugger. In LinqPad we have a property on the context class for every entity that lives on the server. Because LinqPad offers IntelliSense we in fact have much more information about the entity, and more importantly we can compose with that entity very easily. For example, let’s say that this code creates an entity: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) {     var a = server.CreateApplication("WhiteFish");     var src = a         .DefineObservable<int>(() => Observable.Range(0, 3))         .Deploy("ObservableSource"); If later we want to compose with the source we have to fetch it and then we can bind something to     a.GetObservable<int>("ObservableSource)").Bind(... This means that we had to know a bunch of things about this: that it’s a source, that it’s an observable, it produces a result with payload Int32 and it’s named “ObservableSource”. Only the second and last bits of information are present in the debugger, by the way. As you type in the query window you see that all the entities are present, you get IntelliSense support for them and it’s much easier to make sense of what’s available. Let’s look at a scenario where composition is plausible. With the new programming model it’s possible to create “cold” sources that are parameterized. There was a way to accomplish that even in the previous version by passing parameters to the adapters, but this time it’s much more elegant because the expression declares what parameters are required. Say that we hover the mouse over the ThrottledSource source – we will see that its type is Func<int, int, IQbservable<int>> - this in effect means that we need to pass two int parameters before we can get a source that produces events, and the type for those events is int – in the particular case of my example I had the source produce a range of integers and the two parameters were the start and end of the range. So we see how a developer can create a source that is not running yet. Then someone else (e.g. an administrator) can pass whatever parameters appropriate and run the process. Proxy Types Here’s an interesting scenario – what if someone created a source on a server but they forgot to tell you what type they used. Worse yet, they might have used an anonymous type and even though they can refer to it by name you can’t figure out how to use that type. Let’s walk through an example that shows how you can compose against types you don’t need to have the definition of. This is how we can create a source that returns an anonymous type: Application.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(1, 10).Select(i => new { I = i })).Deploy("O1"); Now if we refresh the connection we can see the new source named O1 appear in the list. But what’s more important is that we now have a type to work with. So we can compose a query that refers to the anonymous type. var threshold = new StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0<int>(5); var filter = from i in O1              where i > threshold              select i; filter.Deploy("O2"); You will notice that the anonymous type defined with this statement: new { I = i } can now be manipulated by a client that does not have access to it because the LinqPad driver has generated another type in its stead, named StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0. This type has all the properties and fields of the type defined on the server, except in this case we can instantiate values and use it to compose more queries. It is worth noting that the same thing works for types that are not anonymous – the test is if the LinqPad driver can resolve the type or not. If it’s not possible then a new type will be generated that approximates the type that exists on the server. Control metadata In addition to composing processes on top of the existing entities we can do other useful things. We can delete them – nothing new here as we simply access the entities through the Entities collection of the application class. Here is where having their real name in parentheses comes handy. There’s another way to find out what’s behind a property – dump its expression. The first line in the output tells us what’s the name of the entity used to build this property in the context. Runtime information So let’s create a process to see what happens. We can bind a source to a sink and run the resulting process. If you right click on the connection you can refresh it and see the process present in the list of entities. Then you can drag the process to the query window and see that you can have access to process object in the Processes collection of the application. • Ubuntu 12.10 Skype cannot use Web Cam Microphone

  This is making me crazy. After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, Skype 4.1.0.20 cannot use my Logitech Web Cam microphone anymore, it keeps using the front panel microphone. I can record correctly from the web cam microphone using the sound recorder the web cam microphone is selected in the sound settings I have tried using pavucontrol I have even shut down pulseaudio and set the web cam microphone device in the skype options manually No matter what, Skype will keep recording using the front panel microphone. Everything was working fine with Ubuntu 12.04 before I upgraded to 12.10. Update: the webcam icon is grayed during calls, even tough everything looks ok in the video options . This makes me think skype has some problems in fully recognizing my web cam.

• Have I fixed my partition problem with os x 10.5.8? Are my GPT and MBR back to normal?

  I'm new to linux and I have overstepped by abilities. I tried dual booting os x 10.5.8 with ubuntu 11.10 with rEFIt, but I been having problems with partitioning. Instead of enduring more headaches, I've made the decision to simply use ubuntu on VirtualBox. I've tried to return my HDD to normal, but I am looking for confirmation that my partitions are ok. Here is the report from partition inspector: *** Report for internal hard disk *** Current GPT partition table: # Start LBA End LBA Type 1 409640 233917359 Mac OS X HFS+ Current MBR partition table: # A Start LBA End LBA Type 1 1 234441647 ee EFI Protective MBR contents: Boot Code: GRUB Partition at LBA 409640: Boot Code: None File System: HFS Extended (HFS+) Listed in GPT as partition 1, type Mac OS X HFS+ Also, my HDD directory has a bunch of extra folders in them and they appear to be ubuntu related, although it is no longer installed. folders like bin, sbin, cores, var, user, and so on. Those folders aren't supposed to be there, right? Thanks in advance.

• Can't specify window's class in CCSM's Place Windows

  Following this method, I wanted to "place" some of my windows on specific viewports. For instance, I want Xchat to always start on my top right viewport (x=2, y=1). But after I have set everything up and clicked the "Close" button to validate it (I don't have any other action button, like "OK" or "Apply"), the only thing that get saved up are the viewport X and Y coordinates. The window class (in my case class=Xchat) remains empty. This bug only occurs in the "Windows with fixed viewport" section; it works well in the "Windows with fixed placement mode", for instance. How can I solve or circumvent this issue ?

• I cannot install a proporietary fglrx driver

  OK my install failed while installing the amd proprietary driver. I keep seeing references to a Nvidia driver, but I do not have or even want anything pertaining to Nvidia. • Designing A 2-Way SSL RESTful API

  I am starting to develop a WCF API, which should serve some specific clients. We don't know which devices will be using the API so I thought that using a RESTful API will be the most flexible choice. All devices using the API would be authenticated using an SSL certificate (client side certificate), and our API will have a certificate as well ( so its a 2 Way SSL) I was reading this question over SO, and I saw the answers about authentication using Basic-HTTP or OAuth, but I was thinking that in my case these are not needed, I can already trust the client because it possesses the client-side certificate. Is this design ok? Am I missing anything? Maybe there's a better way of doing this?

  I would like to test MAAS + JUJU + OpenStack (I followed the documentation on maas.ubuntu.org) I already made a test environment: 1 MAAS server wich will also run JuJu 10 KVM servers for Openstack The KVM servers are already in "ready" state in MAAS. I would like to set up JuJu but i could not which is drives me crazy. My environments.yaml: environments: maassrv: type: maas maas-server: 'http://${192.168.1.116}/MAAS/' maas-oauth: 'my-key-from-maas' authorized-keys-path: /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub admin-secret: 1234 default-series: trusty When I run "juju status -e maassrv` : ERROR Unable to connect to environment "maassrv". Please check your credentials or use 'juju bootstrap' to create a new environment. Error details: environment "maassrv" not found OK, it's right, so i should run juju bootstrap -e maassrv: ERROR environment "maassrv" not found When i run the command without the -e switch: error: no environment specified So, I am stuck here, I already added the required ssh keys to maas too. I ran out of ideas why it isn't working.

  just upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10, my Laptop is a Sony SVE1512c6ew, scrolling worked perfectly in Ubuntu 13.04, doesnt work at all in 13.10 Runs Ubuntu 13.10 64bits (btw, tested it i Windows 8 environment works there)Hardware OK, have seen a number of other users with the same problem, well for starters have followed the tip on using the dconf editor, following the path: org gnome settings-daemon peripherals touchpad boxed in all for sure... still cant get vertical scroll...... Any ideas??? • International multi-OS keyboard layout for both coding and surfing?

  So yes, the problem has been raised in parts multiple times already. Still I'm looking for a keyboard layout that has the following features: Easy on fingers (Dvorak-like layouts welcome) Easy for coding Includes german characters (typing ä with AltGr-p is not ok). Works well with web-browsing (Ctrl-t and Ctrl-w on one hand, left one very much preferred, since that's where my ex-CapsLock, now Ctrl lies) Works well with default Emacs bindings Works on both Windows and Linux (at least easily installable) I've looked at Dvorak and Neo, they both have a "shortcut problem", i.e. web-browsing and most frequent Emacs combinations use both parts of the keyboard. Using right Ctrl is usually not an option, since it'll give me RSI much faster than keeping QWERTY/Z. Funnily enough, mirroring the default Neo layout would probably be enough for me. So, any ideas?

• How to get Magento to update order status when PayPal returns IPN message?

  When someone checks out in Magento with PayPal, and PayPal flags their payment for review, Magento correctly sets the order status to "Payment Review". However, if after a day or two PayPal decides the order is OK, it sends an IPN message to Magento with the proper payment status of "Pending" and pending reason of "authorization". I can see this IPN message in Magento's paypal logs (and can simulate it with the sandbox), however, when Magento receives this message it does not update its order status. Why not and how can this be fixed? I am using Magento 1.5.1.0.

• Ubuntu 12.04 - Workspace switcher is shown after switching to another workspace

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 on HP Envy 14 and found a rather interesting bug. When I switch between workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, for example moving down to Workspace 3 from Workspace 1, workspace switcher is shown (as seen on below screenshot). It stays there until I hit escape key. After debugging, the problem only happens when I change shortcut keys to Super + direction. With default Ctrl + Alt + direction, everything is OK. I've searched but haven't found this problem reported before, I'm also not sure this is called workspace switcher :) Can you please let me know what to search for, are there any logs which might have some related information?

• Absolutely Nothing Apearing in "Additional Drivers"

  OK so I just got Ubuntu the other month or so. I'm running the 11.04 version currently and trying to install drivers for a Nvidia graphics card (it's my brother's computer and he currently cannot find the number of the card right now). I read that, to install the proper drivers for gaming, I would need to go into "Additional Drivers" and choose them myself. I clicked to go into "Additional Drivers" and it searched "for available drivers", then opened the additional drivers list. Lo and Behold, there was nothing, simply the message "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and the Help and Close buttons. Sorry if there's some silly simple answer to all of this, I'm new to this sort of thing (used to Windows simplicity, lol) and I really don't know what to do. Help would be much appreciated. Also, I should mention that the graphics card was installed and ran fine before switching from Windows XP to Ubuntu.

  I have 12.04 Ubuntu Studio Installed at the moment. On removing a application called Terminal Emulator, I accidentally removed xfce too. As I am not very fond of xfce, I am OK with it as I can change the session to gnome 3 upon login. But session runs with occasional glitches. My question is how to remove xfce completely and turn it into pure gnome system. I am aware of the way to do apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But, this is going to change the ubuntu studio, I dont want that. I just want to change my ubuntu studio to pure gnome without uninstalling ubuntu-desktop. i.e. Something like ubuntustudio-12.04-gnome build. I've looked at this Q&A: How to remove xubuntu? The accepted answer removes some vital software from Ubuntu Studio such as Gimp, including ubuntustudio-desktop at the end.

  Ok so i own a toshiba laptop , and the thing is my hdd went bad,but i had a usb flash drive with i live cd Ubuntu on it. Now i dont have and hdd plugged in my laptop im only with a flashdrive. My question is how much memory does this live cd support cause my flash drive is 32 gigs and after about 1.5 gigs of downloads a screen shows up and tells me that i dont have enough space left. the other thing is i dont have money to get a hdd right now so i wanna use this flash drive for now but can i somehow customize the cd thru the live edition so i could have programs that i need after restarts i tried with Customization Live Cd but when i run it , it stops and in my terminal it says could not execute not enough space. So if anyone can tell me what can i do with this problem im having with space on my live Usb ubuntu.

  Ive heard allot recently about over optimisation regarding backlink anchor text ofsite. What ive heard from seomoz was sites most effected by the penguin update had over 60% of their backlinks anchor text the same, so google saw this is unnatural and penalized them. Which kind of makes sense as its not normal to have such high density on one word / phrase. If i where building links for a gastro pub in london. (this is purely hypothetical). The sort of keywords i would go after are "gastro pub in london" and "london gastro pub" If i where to mix up the anchor text by having: gastro pub gastro pub in london london gastro pub would this be seen as ok ? or would these all be seen as broad match keywords and counted as one phrase, making me fall foul of the penguin update ?

• Programming in the United States Airforce - How hard to get a job doing it? [closed]

  I already know how to program. Been at it for a year; the language I've worked mostly with has been C++, and I'm currently studying x86 assembly programming, with the goal to move towards ARM assembly after I've finished with that. Thus, given my experience and knowledge, I'm curious to know if any "vets" around here have had any excursions in the military doing software/electrical engineering, and how hard it would be to actually get a job doing it - with someone who already has previous experience and knowledge regarding that field, however slight. By definition of "hard", in this context, I suppose I'd be referring to the required knowledge to actually be a "shoe-in" for both low level and high level software/hardware applications. I know hex fairly well, and enough to convert that hex to binary. I also have an ok knowledge of algorithms, such as Binary Search Tree, Linked List, etc. Everything I've learned so far has been self taught for the most part.

• How can I prevent HTTPS on another domain from wrongly showing on my HTTP-only domain?

  So, I have a blog at domain.com. This blog is HTTP-only because I would gain almost nothing from adding SSL support. I have a web service now that I want to enable SSL support on that runs on the same server and IP address as my blog. I got it all working pretty easily, but not if I go to https://domain.com I will see a huge warning about an SSL certificate error and then if I click "ok" through the warning, I'll see the web service with SSL support, not my blog. My biggest fear with this scheme is Google indexing an HTTPS version of it and penalizing my blog because the content between the two doesn't match. How can I somehow for my blog's domain to either not serve anything on HTTPS, or to redirect back to my HTTP blog, or to serve my blog, but with an invalid SSL certificate? What can I do, preferably without buying another dedicated IP for my website?

• Introduction to LinqPad Driver for StreamInsight 2.1

  We are announcing the availability of the LinqPad driver for StreamInsight 2.1. The purpose of this blog post is to offer a quick introduction into the new features that we added to the StreamInsight LinqPad driver. We’ll show you how to connect to a remote server, how to inspect the entities present of that server, how to compose on top of them and how to manage their lifetime. Installing the driver Info on how to install the driver can be found in an earlier blog post here. Establishing connections As you click on the “Add Connection” link in the left pane you will notice that now it’s possible to build the data context automatically. The new driver appears as an option in the upper list, and if you pick it you will open a connection dialog that lets you connect to a remote StreamInsight server. The connection dialog lets you specify the address of the remote server. You will notice that it’s possible to pick up the binding information from the configuration file of the LinqPad application (which is normally in the same folder as LinqPad.exe and is called LinqPad.exe.config). In order for the context to be generated you need to pick an application from the server. The control is editable hence you can create a new application if you don’t want to make changes to an existing application. If you choose a new application name you will be prompted for confirmation before this gets created. Once you click OK the connection is created and you can start issuing queries against the remote server. If there’s any connectivity error the connection is marked with a red X and you can see the error message informing you what went wrong (i.e., the remote server could not be reached etc.). The context for remote servers Let’s take a look at what happens after we are connected successfully. Every LinqPad query runs inside a context – think of it as a class that wraps all the code that you’re writing. If you’re connecting to a live server the context will contain the following: The application object itself. All entities present in this application (sources, sinks, subjects and processes). The picture below shows a snapshot of the left pane of LinqPad after a successful connection. Every entity on the server has a different icon which will allow users to figure out its purpose. You will also notice that some entities have a string in parentheses following the name. It should be interpreted as such: the first name is the name of the property of the context class and the second name is the name of the entity as it exists on the server. Not all valid entity names are valid identifier names so in cases where we had to make a transformation you see both. Note also that as you hover over the entities you get IntelliSense with their types – more on that later. Remoting is not supported As you play with the entities exposed by the context you will notice that you can’t read and write directly to/from them. If for instance you’re trying to dump the content of an entity you will get an error message telling you that in the current version remoting is not supported. This is because the entity lives on the remote server and dumping its content means reading the events produced by this entity into the local process. ObservableSource.Dump(); Will yield the following error: Reading from a remote 'System.Reactive.Linq.IQbservable`1[System.Int32]' is not supported. Use the 'Microsoft.ComplexEventProcessing.Linq.RemoteProvider.Bind' method to read from the source using a remote observer. This basically tells you that you can call the Bind() method to direct the output of this source to a sink that has to be defined on the remote machine as well. You can’t bring the results to the LinqPad window unless you write code specifically for that. Compose queries You may ask – what's the purpose of all that? After all the same information is present in the EventFlowDebugger, why bother with showing it in LinqPad? First of all, What gets exposed in LinqPad is not what you see in the debugger. In LinqPad we have a property on the context class for every entity that lives on the server. Because LinqPad offers IntelliSense we in fact have much more information about the entity, and more importantly we can compose with that entity very easily. For example, let’s say that this code creates an entity: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) {     var a = server.CreateApplication("WhiteFish");     var src = a         .DefineObservable<int>(() => Observable.Range(0, 3))         .Deploy("ObservableSource"); If later we want to compose with the source we have to fetch it and then we can bind something to     a.GetObservable<int>("ObservableSource)").Bind(... This means that we had to know a bunch of things about this: that it’s a source, that it’s an observable, it produces a result with payload Int32 and it’s named “ObservableSource”. Only the second and last bits of information are present in the debugger, by the way. As you type in the query window you see that all the entities are present, you get IntelliSense support for them and it’s much easier to make sense of what’s available. Let’s look at a scenario where composition is plausible. With the new programming model it’s possible to create “cold” sources that are parameterized. There was a way to accomplish that even in the previous version by passing parameters to the adapters, but this time it’s much more elegant because the expression declares what parameters are required. Say that we hover the mouse over the ThrottledSource source – we will see that its type is Func<int, int, IQbservable<int>> - this in effect means that we need to pass two int parameters before we can get a source that produces events, and the type for those events is int – in the particular case of my example I had the source produce a range of integers and the two parameters were the start and end of the range. So we see how a developer can create a source that is not running yet. Then someone else (e.g. an administrator) can pass whatever parameters appropriate and run the process. Proxy Types Here’s an interesting scenario – what if someone created a source on a server but they forgot to tell you what type they used. Worse yet, they might have used an anonymous type and even though they can refer to it by name you can’t figure out how to use that type. Let’s walk through an example that shows how you can compose against types you don’t need to have the definition of. This is how we can create a source that returns an anonymous type: Application.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(1, 10).Select(i => new { I = i })).Deploy("O1"); Now if we refresh the connection we can see the new source named O1 appear in the list. But what’s more important is that we now have a type to work with. So we can compose a query that refers to the anonymous type. var threshold = new StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0<int>(5); var filter = from i in O1              where i > threshold              select i; filter.Deploy("O2"); You will notice that the anonymous type defined with this statement: new { I = i } can now be manipulated by a client that does not have access to it because the LinqPad driver has generated another type in its stead, named StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0. This type has all the properties and fields of the type defined on the server, except in this case we can instantiate values and use it to compose more queries. It is worth noting that the same thing works for types that are not anonymous – the test is if the LinqPad driver can resolve the type or not. If it’s not possible then a new type will be generated that approximates the type that exists on the server. Control metadata In addition to composing processes on top of the existing entities we can do other useful things. We can delete them – nothing new here as we simply access the entities through the Entities collection of the application class. Here is where having their real name in parentheses comes handy. There’s another way to find out what’s behind a property – dump its expression. The first line in the output tells us what’s the name of the entity used to build this property in the context. Runtime information So let’s create a process to see what happens. We can bind a source to a sink and run the resulting process. If you right click on the connection you can refresh it and see the process present in the list of entities. Then you can drag the process to the query window and see that you can have access to process object in the Processes collection of the application. • Does TOR protect privacy of bittorrent clients like Transmission?

  I am using the Tor bundle and its included browser to initiate torrent downloads with the Transmission client included with Lubuntu. Clicking on a torrent link provides a warning message that external apps are NOT protected by Tor and clicking ok results in normal Transmission start and it begins the download. I have seen assertions in another post answer that Tor starts Transmission using a different profile than the normal $HOME/.config/transmission. However, I see no evidence of the referenced different profile on my system ( $HOME/tor-browser_en-US/.config/transmission). The normal privacy settings provided within Transmission seem inadequate for privacy according to what I have read. Has something changed in how Tor bundle browser (firefox) interacts with supporting apps like Transmission. Tor bundle otherwise seems to be operating correctly. I asked the question in the post but it was deleted by moderator for some reason not given

  I was able to install bastille from the normal repositories and then run the GUI. After going through the options and clicking OK to apply, it showed these errors. Do you know why Bastille wont work on Ubuntu 12.04?
