  As the second part of the JCP.Next effort, JCP 2.9 launched 2 weeks ago on 13 November, and the first JCP EC ballots with the Merged EC have concluded.   JSR 339, JAX-RS 2.0: The Java API for RESTful Web Services, passed EC Public Review Ballot and was approved by the EC -- 22 yes votes, 2 abstain, 2 did not vote -- view results. JSR 349, Bean Validation 1.1, passed EC Public Review Ballot and was approved by the EC --17 yes votes, 2 abstain, 5 did not vote --  view results.

I don't get a lot of opportunities to learn at my organization since we primarily support existing systems and just fix issues arising on a day to day basis, We are not expected by the parent company to develop solutions from scratch. I aspire to become an Architect. Please guide me how should I plan to acquire the required skills and Knowledge esp since my company doesn't provide me with the right opportunities. The city where i am in doesn't have a lot of s/w development companies they are mostly services companies. Thanks a lot for your replies. Please give me some directions on how do I plan the self learning process ? Personal commitment won't let me move out of my current capacity to join a entry level job outside as of now . • Are these hacking attempts or something less sinister?

  I just had a look through our web server error logs, and Terminal services is reporting: "Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated." Hundreds of times, every 10.5 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 minutes, once at 2pm yesterday and once again at about 1am this morning. We CURRENTLY have RDP open to the outside, as I am just completing the setup and now and then I/Others need to jump on from an outside office/location (VPN isn't an option) As these are so regular, am I right in assuming that they may be the result of some sort of dictionary attack? or could something like an internal admin's hung session cause such a mass of events? (Win Server 2008 R2)

The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

• How to estimate what kind of server resources you will require at launch?

  How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?

  Here's my scenario, I need to develop a scalable application. My user base may be over 100K, every user has 10 or more small tasks. Tasks check every minute with a third party application through web services, retrieving data which is written in the database, then the data is forwarded to it's original destination.   I am developing a web app and I have currently written the entire website in html/js/css and on the backend I have servlets that host some RESTFUL services. All the presentation logic is done through getting json objects and modifying the view through javascript. The application is essentially a search engine, but it will have user accounts with different roles. I've been researching some frameworks such as Play and Spring. I'm fairly new to web development, so I was wondering what advantages using server side page rendering would provide? Is it: Speed? Easier development and workflow? Access to existing libraries? • What would one call this architecture?

  I have developed a distributed test automation system which consists of two different entities. One entity is responsible for triggering tests runs and monitoring/displaying their progress. The other is responsible for carrying out tests on that host. Both of these entities retrieve data from a central DB. Now, my first thought is that this is clearly a server-client architecture. After all, you have exactly one organizing entity and many entities that communicate with said entity. However, while the supposed clients to communicate to the server via RPC, they are not actually requesting services or information, rather they are simply reporting back test progress, in fact, once the test run has been triggered they can complete their tasks without connection to the server. The request for a service is actually made by the supposed server which triggers the clients to carry out tests. So would this still be considered a server-client architecture or is this something different?

• Network doesn't work after upgrading to 13.10

  I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and a number of things stopped working. Most importantly, I don't have internet access anymore. When I go to the network settings, I receive the following error: The system network services are not compatible with this version. The only settings that show up in the network settings are the proxy settings. I tried sudo service network-manager start and sudo service network-manager restart, but it told me the service was already running. In addition, the menu bar is missing all of the indicators (such as keyboard layout, sound, network, clock, and the gear icon). Is this related or a separate issue?
