• How is the MAC address on a computer determined?

  While imaging some computers today, I started to wonder... what if two LAN MAC addresses on two different computers matched?... That would cause some problems. I later came to understand that the MAC address' 48-bit address space contains potentially 248 or 281,474,976,710,656 possible MAC addresses. [ in other-words, a lot of networking devices ] How are these MAC addresses determined? Will we ever run out of them? ( I know the second question is speculation, but there are a lot of devices that require a mac addresses...) Do MAC addresses get recycled?

• Is my Power Supply Unit fried?

  So my laptop just started smoking where I plug my charger in. I run a netbook, the Acer Aspire One. My charger won't charge it, because when I plug my charger into the netbook, the charging light that indicates the netbook is receiving power turns off. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot where the problem is and what should I do now? Is just my charger fried and should I replace it. Or could there also be a problem with my netbook and do I need to look for other problems?

• Shares not working on boot need to reinstall "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" on server every morning to fix

  I had a problem a few days ago see question here: Can no longer access computer or network shares to my server from any other computers on the network The fix that I found does in fact work however when I boot my PC in the morning the shares are no longer working, to fix this I need to remote desktop into the server and re-install "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" on the main adaptor. Doing this makes the shares work again, however it is anoying to have to do this each and every morning. On top of this my offline files are no longer available offline: I store my user profile on the server and had them selected to be "Always Available" however since this has happened they are no longer available offline and the option to make them available offline from the context menu is no longer available. Another problem, and I don't know if this is the cause or just a tell of a deeper issue but this server runs hyper-v, since these problems I can no longer remote desktop into the hyper-v client. • Windows services not starting automatically?

  We've had some nasty time sync problems on our Windows Server 2008 R2 servers lately. I traced this back to something very simple: the Windows Time Service was not started! The time can't possibly sync via NTP when the time service isn't running... The Windows Time Service was set to start "automatically" in the services control panel, which I double and triple checked. I also checked the event logs and I didn't see any service failures or anything like that. In fact, it looked a heck of a lot like the Windows Time Service never started up automatically after the weekly Windows Updates were installed and the servers were rebooted. (this is set to happen every Saturday at 7 PM.) The minute I started the Time Service, the time synced fine. So, then, the question: why would a service set to start "Automatically" ... not be started automatically? That seems sort of crazy to me.

• Recommended display/background brightness ratio and UI color schemes [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Colour scheme for editor - guidelines or medical reccomendations 3 answers I'm a professional programmer, which means I spend a lot of time staring at various displays. Recently I've been having some problems with my eyes, so I went to talk to several doctors, which all gave me different recommendations as to how bright the background of the room should be in comparison to the display's brightness. It was very confusing, as some of them even agreed with counter-arguments of others, which made it all even less clear. So I'd like to ask the professional programmers, as people who actually have some experience with that. Some of the doctors said that looking at a monitor is like looking at a book, so the brightness ratios should be approximately the same. Others said that background should be as bright as the display itself, because then there is no brightness difference at the edges, and that's what may cause eye fatigue. From my own experience, I can say that reading a book isn't the same as writing or debugging a program, where you have to pay close attention to each symbol, and in books most words are easily recognizable without focusing too hard on them. Also, books are black on white and I myself use the default (dark text, white bg) color scheme for my IDE, but I've seen some programmers use mid-bright text on very dark background color schemes. So I'd like to ask what are the recommended display/background brightness ratios for programming? I'm not sure this site is the right one for this kind of questions, so if you know a better one, please comment.

• What is the best way to shutdown hard disk?

  Right Now I'm using hdparm command in unix to shut down the hard disk but there are few issues with it. when it wakes back up it consumes lots power. Is there any other way to do it? Many times when I put my hard disk to sleep, I can see few bursts at the beginning and then after a while it goes to sleep. I think its because of the journaling system in ubuntu (which I use) Have anybody encountered that? What would be the best linux/unix operating system (eg: ubuntu/centos/redhat) to work on extensive hard disk operations? I would highly appreciate if you could share the problems you encountered while doing this operation.

• Ubuntu cannot see Windows 7 partitions on install

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510. It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Ubuntus installer by booting from CD it sees the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have also tried Kbuntu 10.10, Fedora 14, booting a Gparted 0.8.0 usb drive, and Ubuntu "install in Windows" with wubi they all have problems. EDIT: When I run the "try Ubuntu" option on booting from cd it can mount my Windows partition and I can view the files. The output of sudo parted -l when running in try Ubuntu mode: Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? • Nginx as a reverse proxy + Apache or completely cut out Apache? (WordPress Multisite)

  I am starting a WordPress multisite network with domain mapping and I am trying to think through my server set up. Right now, I only have one medium sized VPS but hopefully I will need to add more servers later so ideally the solution will also accommodate future growth. My question is, would it be better to set up Nginx as a reverse proxy with Apache or use only Nginx? It seems like setting up Nginx as a reverse proxy would be easier and offer less of a possibility of problems but, on the other hand, would using only Nginx add substantial benefits?

• Architecture for dashboard showing aggregated stats [on hold]

  I'd like to know what are common architectural pattern for the following problem. Web application A has information on sales, users, responsiveness score, etc. Some of this information are computationally intensive and or have a complex business logic (e.g. responsiveness score). I'm building a separate application (B) for internal admin tasks that modifies data in web application A and report on data from web application A. For writing I'm planning to use a restful api. E.g. create a new entity, update entity, etc. In application B I'd like to show some graphs and other aggregate data for the previous 12 months. I'm planning to store the aggregate data for each month in redis. Some data should update more often, e.g every 10 minutes. I can think of 3 ways of doing this. A scheduled task in app B that connects to an api of app A that provides some aggregated data. Then app B stores it in Redis and use that to visualise pages. Cons: it makes complex calculation within a web request, requires lot's of work e.g. api server and client, storing, etc., pros: business logic still lives in app A. A scheduled task in app A that aggregates data in an non-web process and stores it directly in Redis to be accessed by app B. A scheduled task in app A that aggregates data in a non-web process and uses an api in app B to save it. I'd like to know if there is a well known architectural solution to this type of problems and if not what are other pros/cons for the solution I've suggested?

• Extracting a .zip file into Program Files (x86)

  I just got 64 bit Vista system after being on Windows XP. I'm trying to get all my useful programs up to date, and I've recently had a problem extracting files into the 32-bit program files directory (Program Files (x86)). I'm using 7zip to extract the eclipse-SDK-3.5-win32.zip directory into C:\Program Files (x86) Unfortunately, every time I've tried to do this, 7Zip reports can not open output file C:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse\... I've been able to extract it to C:\ and then move it, I'm assuming there's some protection on the Program Files directory that is causing some problems. Any suggestions?

  I have some problems with my Dell Vostro 3350. I have to graphic card - Intel and ATI radeon 6470M. I have installed this driver. It's fresh installation of Windows 7. And my problem is that in device menager I can see in section graphic cards AMD Radeon HD 6490M and Intel(R) Graphics Family. Another thing is that I'm using two screens. And I want to use ATI readeon as default. At this moment I'm event not sure if ATI is working. Another strange thing is that when I run Catalyst Control Center in section Destkop Menagement i don't see nothing.

• How can I shrink my Windows partition further than the disk management is allowing?

  I just bought a new computer with a 2tb hard drive that has only a single partition. I would like to divide this into at least 4 partitions, but when I try to shrink the current partition, it says the total size is 1888171 MB and that the size of available shrink space is only 939075 MB. The used disk space is at 40gb right now - why can't shrink it to somewhere around that? I read here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/working-around-windows-vistas-shrink-volume-inadequacy-problems/ that this is because of unmovable system files. I doubt this is the only problem though. I would like to get this partition down to 500gb. How can I do this?

• Upgrading Fedora to Current Version - Dependent Applications Concerns

  Is it possible to upgrade to Fedora 11 and still keep the server functional (it's running Fedora Core release 6 now, with MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1 and Apache 2.2)? I have a Customer Relationship Management system on there and it is required on a daily basis. I am trying to figure out if I should upgrade (and whether that will cause huge problems) or if I should start over with a new OS (like Ubuntu) and install the CRM fresh, with updated version of MySQL, PHP, Apache, etc. I ask because I am not really the sysadmin, but have but put in charge of this server.

• No text in working indicator-messages after enabling different icons depending on the status

  My indicator-messages has some problems. As you can see in the image, there appears no text. The indicator is working correctly, if there is some income, a number will appear in its proper place or I will be able to see the minutes passed after I got an email, but still no information. As you can see in the picture, I changed the envelope icon for the status one. I configured it as is indicated in http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/08/ubuntu-add-new-message-indicator-icons, with the indicator changing depending on the status. But I modified it so I see the bubble. The bubble gets the arrow when I'm absent, for example, or an "X" of I'm disconnected, and also turns blue if there an income. I believe the problem is related with this new indicator. The first days, it was working fine, but then the text dissapeared. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the packet, with no success. I'm using ubuntu 12.10 64bits with Unity. Someone has an idea how to fix this? I would prefer conserving the characteristic of having different icons. Thanks a lot!!! • Why can't I open programs after watching youtube videos for a while?

  I have recently built a new PC, and it worked fine for a while (1-2 months of no problems whatsoever). However in the recent weeks I noticed that after I watched some youtube videos and closed everything, I can no longer do anything except move the mouse and expand the Startup Menu. If I click on any of the programs on the Start Menu or type a program on the Run text box, it won't open anything. I can't open taskmgr, or windows explorer, or even shut down the PC. I don't have anything else running when I'm watching videos except ZoneAlarm and Avast. The only workaround I can do when this happens is a forced shutdown (holding the power button of my PC), and restart if I wanted to do anything more. But this happens a lot - about 4-5 times a week so I'm worried it would fry up my hardware if I keep on doing this. • How can I re-program/flash a backup of the bios?

  I have some computers that have a particular bios setting that keeps everything running smoothly. The setting is not the default setting for the motherboard. So, when the CMOS battery dies, the setting is erased and causes the user problems. How can I backup the bios and settings I have now, and flash that file onto my entire stock of computers? I have attempted to use awdflash to backup my bios and then attempt to write that backup to the ROM chip, but I keep getting an error. It tells me that my file number doesn't match the system, or something like that. Basically, the file is incompatible with the chip. But I just backed it up from that chip. If anyone can shed some light on this for me it would be helpful.

• Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) subpixel font rendering crashes Xorg

  Hi everyone... I really don't know how to solve this on my own so I thought giving this site a chance. After upgrading to Lucid I ran into some problems. With some experimenting I came to a conclusion that if I enable subpixel smoothing on fonts the moment I start any other application not native to GTK+ (wine, openoffice, wxWidgets, ...) my X server crashes the same moment. At first this seemed like something went wrong during installation. To cut the long story short, after 3 clean installations and whole bunch of experimenting the same thing happens all over again. Strange thing is... if I configure any other font smoothing besides subpixel, everything works like it should. Any thoughs?

• Should we regularly schedule mysqlcheck (or databsae optimization)

  We run a forum with some 2 million posts and I've noticed that if left untouched the overhead in the mySQL (as listed in phpMyAdmin) can get quite large (hundreds of megabytes). I'm wondering if scheduling a normal mysqlcheck to optimize the tables is good practice? Any reason not to do it, say, once a week at an off-peak hour? There was a time over the summer where our site was constantly crashing because mysql was using up all resources. That's when I noticed the huge amount of overhead and optimized the database and haven't had any problems since then with stability. I figured if that was helping alleviate the issues, I should just setup a cron to automatically do this.

• Acer aspire v3 771G ubuntu 13.04

  Gooday, i have this acer and i have alot of boot problems (i suspect windows 8) and now i want to try ubuntu but when i use an usb to "try" ubuntu after the boot i get a black screen. now ive read some of the forums and i found something about NOMODESET i have not tried this as i dont know what this does exactly. now i have found this wiki entry https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee , i am by far no programmer and always reading all those commands have always kept me of linux because im scared i will !@#$ things up. is there anyway i can go to NOMODESET in the ubuntu "trial" and can i also include the bumblebee futures (coding?) and in how many ways wil this affect my laptops perfomance? reading the bumblebee entry its seems to be something about nvidia optimus and i dont reallt care much for the power saving, but will it affect any performance? im not a heavy pc gamer but i like tho do some gaming and streaming and such also on a rather big TV in wich this laptop already has it flaws in some games not running properly on 65" if this doesn't work or u advise me not to do this what else can i do to fix windows 8 or either some other linux version? i thankyou in advance

• Is the console command cd a wildcard of sorts? [closed]

  I was wondering while developing some application (though this is not a development question) if the cd command used in Windows is a wildcard or cross-platform command of sorts. I looked up on table with comands for Unix/Linux and MAC OS X and it turns out that it seems to be there. I am not a multi-os user, so I ask if anyone with experience in different OSes can tell me: If this command really exists and works If it has the same functionality (change directory) If there are any problems with its use If in any OS there is another command-line command that does the same in a better/more elaborate/more frequetly used way. • How do I uninstall the TuxOnIce kernel in 12.04?

  I recently installed tuxonice on a Toshiba z830. I have ubuntu 12.04 (kernel was: 3.2.0-26) I wanted to be able to hibernate, which I consider to be a basic thing a OS should allow you to do. Well, it didn't work...but they already tell you it may not so I removed it. For doing all these I followed: Problem with Hibernation After uninstalling I switched off the laptop and after this I started to have several problems. The first one was that Cisco VPN didn't work anymore and then I realised that I could not even suspend my laptop. I found very strange that after removing tuxonice I still had this: /lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic-tuxonice/ The VPN problem could be solved by just copying from my previous kernel: 3.2.0-26-generic/CiscoVPN/ into the tuxonice one. Not very elegant but works. Now, for the suspend problem (and the previous too) I can hold Shift when starting and select my old kernel and then suspend works again. In my opinion tuxonice was not correctly uninstalled as it left that kernel behind and worse: ubuntu uses it if I do not take action. I have these work arounds....and here is my question: how can I delete this tuxonice kernel safely? If you need more info please let me know.

  before posting I was digging whole site but didn't find help for my problem, so I hope someone will help... Facts: 30 Gb mysql database on remote server (about 20.000.000 rows) data are once weekly updated in local network (mysql) I need to transfer/replace local updated database with remote connection is about 2mb (real mb, not mbps) up/down Point is that I can't have 'down time' of remote mysql server. Until now I Tried: navicat data sync - Ok, but take about 3 days to finish dbForge - ok but need 5 days to finish mysql dump transfer to remote server and execution - about day, but a lot of downtime rsync folder with database /mysql/lib/MY_DATABASE - 4 hours, but after that I need to execute always 'repir on remote server' which takes about 2 hours, and a lot of down time mysql dump piped from cl to directly goto server - still now satisfied many problems I could give you more things that I tried... mysql replication - slow Anyase, what is best,best way to: refresh remote mysql on weekly level and in same time to have 0 sec down time nor huge server load If you have any idea please share
