  • view is not rendered when returning ModelAndView

    Hi, I have the following problem. I need to export a PDF in a controller The code below, where I return a View, works as expected. @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.GET) public View exportReport( @RequestParam(value = "userName", required = true) String userName, @RequestParam(value = "startDate", required = true) Date startDate, @RequestParam(value = "endDate", required = true) Date endDate) { /////////////////////////////////////////// return new TimeSheetReportPdfView(); } The problem occurs if I change the method to return a ModelAndView: @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.GET) public ModelAndView exportReport( @RequestParam(value = "userName", required = true) String userName, @RequestParam(value = "startDate", required = true) Date startDate, @RequestParam(value = "endDate", required = true) Date endDate) { /////////////////////////////////////////// return new ModelAndView(new TimeSheetReportPdfView(), model); } Now, the PDF is not exported, all I get is a blank page and nothing in the logs. What I need to do now is verify every time that the page is loading if the user has access granted to that page.... Its a good pratice to go back in WCF request this info for every page that the user access?This will not slow down my entire system?

  • Circular Reference exception with JSON Serialisation with MVC3 and EF4 CTP5w

    Hi I'm having problems with a circular reference when i try and serialise an object returned via EF4 CTP5. Im using the code first approach and simple poco's for my model. I have added [ScriptIgnore] attributes to any properties that provide a back references to an object and annoyingly every seems to work fine if i manually instantiate the poco's, i.e. they serialise to JSON fine, and the scriptignore attribute is acknowledged. However when i try and serialise an object returned from the DAL i get the circular reference exception "A circular reference was detected while serializing an object of type 'System.Data.Entity.DynamicProxies.xxxx'" I have tried several ways of retreiving the data but they all get stuck with this error: public JsonResult GetTimeSlot(int id) { TimeSlotDao tsDao = new TimeSlotDao(); TimeSlot ts = tsDao.GetById(id); return Json(ts); } The method below works slightly better as rather than the timeslot dynamic proxied object causing the circular refference its the appointment object. public JsonResult GetTimeSlot(int id) { TimeSlotDao tsDao = new TimeSlotDao(); var ts = from t in tsDao.GetQueryable() where t.Id == id select new {t.Id, t.StartTime, t.Available, t.Appointment}; return Json(ts); } Any ideas or solutions to this problem? Update I would prefer to use the out of the box serialiser if possible although Json.Net via nuget is ok as an alternative i would hope its possible to use it as I intended as well...

  • Passing HttpFileCollectionBase to the Business Layer - Bad?

    hopefully there's an easy solution to this one. I have my MVC2 project which allows uploads of files on certain forms. I'm trying to keep my controllers lean, and handle the processing within the business layer of this sort of thing. That said, HttpFileCollectionBase is obviously in the System.Web assembly. Ideally I want to call to something like: UserService.SaveEvidenceFiles(MyUser user, HttpFileCollectionBase files); or something similar and have my business layer handle the logic of how and where these things are saved. But, it feels a little icky to have my models layer with a reference to System.Web in terms of separation of concerns etc. So, we have (that I'm aware of) a few options: the web project handling this, and my controllers getting fatter mapping the HttpFileCollectionBase to something my business layer likes passing the collection through, and accepting that I reference System.Web from my business project Would love some feedback here on best practice approaches to this sort of thing - even if not specifically within the context of the above.

  • Use different updatetargetid based on view

    I have a web page which display a list of items in a HTML table. Above the list is a form which allows the user to add a new item to the list via AJAX (using Ajax.BeginForm). When the data is posted to the controller via AJAX I add the new item to the database backend and generate a new table row via a Partial View which then gets appended to the exisiting table. When the form to add new items however contains errors, I want to render the form back to the web browser and display that. So here is the question: Is it possible to specify the UpdateTargetId from within the controller? At the moment whatever View I return from the controller gets inserted in the same target, but I would like to update a different target (ie. different UpdateTargetId) based on whatever view was returned from the controller. Any help would be appreciated...

    The name "view model" suggests that it models the data for the view. That much is obvious. What else can or should go in the view model? As an example, a view might display a list of items in a shopping cart, fields for customer's credit card info, and fields for customer's billing information. The view model might contain properties for all that OR it might only contain properties for the shopping cart items.

  • Trouble with Code First DatabaseGenerated Composite Primary Key

    This is a tad complicated, and please, I know all the arguments against natural PK's, so we don't need to have that discussion. using VS2012/MVC4/C#/CodeFirst So, the PK is based on the date and a corresponding digit together. So, a few rows created today would be like this: 20131019 1 20131019 2 And one created tomorrow: 20131020 1 This has to be automatically generated using C# or as a trigger or whatever. The user wouldn't input this. I did come up with a solution, but I'm having problems with it, and I'm a little stuck, hence the question. So, I have a model: public class MainOne { //[Key] //public int ID { get; set; } [Key][Column(Order=1)] [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.None)] public string DocketDate { get; set; } [Key][Column(Order=2)] [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.None)] public string DocketNumber { get; set; } [StringLength(3, ErrorMessage = "Corp Code must be three letters")] public string CorpCode { get; set; } [StringLength(4, ErrorMessage = "Corp Code must be four letters")] public string DocketStatus { get; set; } } After I finish the model, I create a new controller and views using VS2012 scaffolding. Then, what I'm doing is debugging to create the database, then adding the following instead of trigger after Code First creates the DB [I don't know if this is correct procedure]: CREATE TRIGGER AutoIncrement_Trigger ON [dbo].[MainOnes] instead OF INSERT AS BEGIN DECLARE @number INT SELECT @number=COUNT(*) FROM [dbo].[MainOnes] WHERE [DocketDate] = CONVERT(DATE, GETDATE()) INSERT INTO [dbo].[MainOnes] (DocketDate,DocketNumber,CorpCode,DocketStatus) SELECT (CONVERT(DATE, GETDATE ())),(@number+1),inserted.CorpCode,inserted.DocketStatus FROM inserted END And when I try to create a record, this is the error I'm getting: The changes to the database were committed successfully, but an error occurred while updating the object context. The ObjectContext might be in an inconsistent state. Inner exception message: The object state cannot be changed. This exception may result from one or more of the primary key properties being set to null. Non-Added objects cannot have null primary key values. See inner exception for details. Now, what's interesting to me, is that after I stop debugging and I start again, everything is perfect. The trigger fired perfectly, so the composite PK is unique and perfect, and the data in other columns is intact. My guess is that EF is confused by the fact that there is seemingly no value for the PK until AFTER an insert command is given. Also, appearing to back this theory, is that when I try to edit on of the rows, in debug, I get the following error: The number of primary key values passed must match number of primary key values defined on the entity. Same error occurs if I try to pull the 'Details' or 'Delete' function. Any solution or ideas on how to pull this off? I'm pretty open to anything, even creating a hidden int PK. But it would seem redundant.     Hi, I'm just starting to use the TestHelpers in MvcContrib. I want to try and test an action method on my controller that itself tests if IsAjaxRequest() is true. I've used the same code that is shown in the TestHelper samples to set up the TestControllerBuilder _controller = new StarsController(); _builder = new TestControllerBuilder(); _builder.InitializeController(_controller); So that _controller has all the faked/mocked HttpContext inside it, which is really great. But what do I do now to force IsAjaxRequest() on the internally faked Request object to return true?

  • A c# Generics question involving Controllers and Repositories

    I have a base repository class which contains all the common repository methods (as generic): public abstract class BaseRepository<T, IdType> : IBaseRepository<T, IdType> My repositories from this base e.g.: public class UserRepository : BaseRepository<User, int>, IUserRepository I also have a base controller class containing common actions, and inherit from this in controllers. The repository is injected into this by DI. E.g. public class UserController : BaseController<User> { private readonly IUserRepository userRepository; public UserController (IUserRepository userRepository) { this.userRepository= userRepository; } My question is this: The base controller needs to be able to access the repository methods that are defined in the base repository. However I'm passing in via DI a different repository type for each controller (even though they all inherrit from the base repository). How can the base controller somehow access the repository that is passed in (regardless of what type it is), so that it can access the common base methods?

  • Why is my substitution control suddenly not working in ASP.NET 4.0?

    I just upgraded my site from ASP.NET 3.5 to 4.0. I've been working through some breaking changes (there were more than I expected). One I can't figure out, however, is why my <asp:Substitution /> control suddenly stopped working like it should. It's supposed to ignore the output cache settings of the parent page and update upon every request. For some reason that isn't happening. It's caching for the full 10 minutes (the OutputCache setting for my home page). Any ideas?

  • Could not load file or assembly error even when reference has been removed

    Could not load file or assembly 'Payflow_dotNET_2.0' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) I tried to reference the payflow SDK and got this error.But I am no longer trying to reference it. I have removed all references to this dll. and Now I am just trying to get the project to start in VS but I still get this error. I am not trying to add the dll anymore.If i have removed the reference to this, why am I still getting this error? How can I remove anything else that may still be causing my program to look for this file? Thanks!

  • Radio buttons being reset in FF on cache-refresh

    (This is technically an addendum to an earlier StackOverflow question I had posted, but my original post asked a different question which doesn't really cover this topic -- I don't want to edit my older question as I feel this is different enough to merit its own page) While browsing my website in Firefox 3.5 (and only FF3.5), I come across a page with two radio buttons that have the following HTML code: <input id="check1" type="radio" value="True" name="check" checked="checked"/> <input id="check2" type="radio" value="False" name="check"/> This page renders as expected, with 'check1' checked and 'check2' unchecked. When I then go to refresh the page by pressing Control + R, the two radio buttons render, but they are both unchecked even though the raw HTML code is the same (as above). If I do a cache-miss refresh (via Control + F5 or Control + Shift + R), the page returns back to the way you'd expect it. This is not a problem in any other browser I've tried except FF3.5. What is causing these radio buttons to be reset on a normal refresh? How can I avoid this?

  • Rails: how to represent available view actions in a stateful model?

    I have a model that is stateful. In each state there are a selection of actions that the user might want to perform on an instance of the model. Currently I am translating the model state to actions that get represented in the view using a view helper. Something like this... in the model: Class Thing def state_is_A? state == 'A' end end In the helper: def display_available_actions(thing) if thing.state_is_A? link_to <action1> link_to <action2> end end And in the view: <%= display_available_actions(@thing) %> I don't like the fact that the model state is translated into view actions in the helper. I would like this to be incorporated into the model. On the other hand, it doesn't seem healthy for the model and view to get so coupled. Is there a Ruby or Rails idiom that suits this kind of situation better than my approach? Should each state be a separate model perhaps?

    Hi Say if I had this table in my db: Product It had ProductId ProductName ProductType Now for whatever reason I can't name my textboxes ProductName and ProductType so now my View Method would look like this public ViewResult Test([Bind(Exclude ="ProductId")] Product) So now through my playing around nothing would be matched in this product since they have different names. So I guess this is where Prefix would come in but I don't know how to use it. Nor how do I use it and Exclude at the same time. Can someone give me an example?
