• Repository query conditions, dependencies and DRY

  To keep it simple, let's suppose an application which has Accounts and Users. Each account may have any number of users. There's also 3 consumers of UserRepository: An admin interface which may list all users Public front-end which may list all users An account authenticated API which should only list it's own users Assuming UserRepository is something like this: class UsersRepository extends DatabaseAbstraction { private function query() { return $this->database()->select('users.*'); } public function getAll() { return $this->query()->exec(); } // IMPORTANT: // Tons of other methods for searching, filtering, // joining of other tables, ordering and such... } Keeping in mind the comment above, and the necessity to abstract user querying conditions, How should I handle querying of users filtering by account_id? I can picture three possible roads: 1. Should I create an AccountUsersRepository? class AccountUsersRepository extends UserRepository { public function __construct(Account $account) { $this->account = $account; } private function query() { return parent::query() ->where('account_id', '=', $this->account->id); } } This has the advantage of reducing the duplication of UsersRepository methods, but doesn't quite fit into anything I've read about DDD so far (I'm rookie by the way) 2. Should I put it as a method on AccountsRepository? class AccountsRepository extends DatabaseAbstraction { public function getAccountUsers(Account $account) { return $this->database() ->select('users.*') ->where('account_id', '=', $account->id) ->exec(); } } This requires the duplication of all UserRepository methods and may need another UserQuery layer, that implements those querying logic on chainable way. 3. Should I query UserRepository from within my account entity? class Account extends Entity { public function getUsers() { return UserRepository::findByAccountId($this->id); } } This feels more like an aggregate root for me, but introduces dependency of UserRepository on Account entity, which may violate a few principles. 4. Or am I missing the point completely? Maybe there's an even better solution? Footnotes: Besides permissions being a Service concern, in my understanding, they shouldn't implement SQL query but leave that to repositories since those may not even be SQL driven.

• Internal speakers do not work

  I have a new (from scratch, not update) installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on my notebook, Asus A3Ac (It is based on Intel Centrino - Pentium M with full duplex Intel HDA codec). In older versions of Debian-based systems Intel HDA audio didn't work correctly. Alsamixer display wrong outputs and inputs (more than notebook really have). In clean installations internal speakers were playing, but they didn't mute when headphones was plugged in. There was a solution (propably not the best but working) - edit as root /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add a line "options snd-hda-intel model=z71v position_fix=1". After restart it worked correctly (alsamixer displayed correct devices and internal speakers were muted after I plugged in headphones). It was also working in Ubuntu 12.04. In Ubuntu 12.10 I have another problem. The alsamixer in default (don't have to edit alsa-base.conf) display correct outputs and inputs but internal speakers don't working if the headphones isn't plugged in. I have to manually disable "Auto-Mut" option in alsamixer, then the internal spakers works (but of course they don't mute when the headphones are pluged in). Thanks for any idea how to fix it. I'm not sure if it is a bug or it's caused by a "specific hardware". Tomas

• VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

  The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again. • Is it possible to use two different ErrorDocuments for different paths of a website?

  this is my first question on stackexchange and it might be a bit confusing. I currently run PmWiki (sorry, you'll have to google it, new user can only have 2 hyperlinks) at mydomain.com/pmwiki. I have a 404 page and .htaccess set up in my site's document root for 404 pages regarding anything that doesn't have to do with my wiki. By default, PmWiki handles URLs a little confusingly so I had to use this in order to get it to look like mydomain.com/pmwiki/Namespace/Page I had to create a .htaccess in /pmwiki to remove parts of the URL. PmWiki also has a custom 404 (Site/PageNotFound) page that has stopped working, now my site uses the /404.htm page. I noticed this when trying to install this "recipe" to enable case-insensitive URLs. Currently the only way to access Site/PageNotFound is by actually linking to it, and, if you read how that recipe seems to function, this is an issue. Currently mydomain.com/pmwiki/blahblah and mydomain.com/pmwiki/legitimate_namespace_but_lowercase/legitimate_lowercase_page_name both direct to mydomain.com/404.htm. I have to admit I'm very confused, and I apologize if I was unclear in any of this, but I could definitely use some help. Thanks!

• Grub2 cannot detect Windows 8

  At installation it did not detect Windows. I mounted the Windows partition and have run os-prober with no results returning. I am able to boot Windows or Ubuntu by specifying the partition in UEFI boot order. The bios does not appear to allow booting with legacy. SecureBoot is on. This is with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a Inspiron 15. I added the following to /etc/grub.d/40_custom but booting ubuntu did not offer a grub menu: menuentry "Windows 8" { set root = "(hd0,4)" chainloader +1 } When booting I think I see "EFI Disk error" flash very quickly before Ubuntu starts booting.

• 12.04 LTS Apache2 writing files from webpage at runtime has no effect - possible read/write permissions?

  I'm running 12.04LTS with Apache and Mono in VirtualBox, with the goal of hosting a web app (coded in ASP.NET and C#) on my local network. The scripts on the page are able to successfully read from text files in the same directory as my site (/var/www/mysite/) but do not seem to be able to write. I'm sure the code works, because it did with my testing in Visual Web Developer on Windows. I don't get any errors, but when I click the button on the loaded webpage, the text file in question does not change. I'm fairly new to Linux in general, so I'm not too familiar with how to set permissions properly, and it may be a permissions issue. Unfortunately, I have searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution that worked, but I've tried (perhaps incorrectly) changing the owner of the files in question to www-root, changing the mode to a+rw, but sadly to no avail. I have tried everything here but it doesn't work: Whats the simplest way to edit and add files to "/var/www"? I hope someone can help me out.

• Should I avoid or embrace asking questions of other developers on the job?

  As a CS undergraduate, the people around me are either learning or are paid to teach me, but as a software developer, the people around me have tasks of their own. They aren't paid to teach me, and conversely, I am paid to contribute. When I first started working as a software developer co-op, I was introduced to a huge code base written in a language I had never used before. I had plenty of questions, but didn't want to bother my co-workers with all of them - it wasted their time and hurt my pride. Instead, I spent a lot of time bouncing between IDE and browser, trying to make sense of what had already been written and differentiate between expected behavior and symptoms of bugs. I'd ask my co-workers when I felt that the root of my lack of understanding was an in-house concept that I wouldn't find on the internet, but aside from that, I tried to confine my questions to lunch hours. Naturally, there were occasions where I wasted time trying to understand something in code on the internet that had, at its heart, an in-house concept, but overall, I felt I was productive enough during my first semester, contributing about as much as one could expect and gaining a pretty decent understanding of large parts of the product. I was wondering what senior developers felt about that mindset. Should new developers ask more questions to get to speed faster, or should they do their own research for themselves? I see benefits to both mindsets, and anticipate a large variety of responses, but I figure new developers might appreciate your answers without thinking to ask this question.

• Can't install GTX 680 drivers on 12.04

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. I have three monitors, and after installing, ubuntu only detected one at 1080p. I downloaded the driver from the nvidia website, but when I stop lightdm and try to run the driver, it gives me an error message: ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option. I tried instead to install the driver via the terminal, with the X ppa. The installation seemed to work, but when I rebooted, my display was at 640x480 resolution, with no other options for resolution. The NVIDIA X Server settings program is there now, but when I run it, it simply tells me that I don't seem to be using their driver, and that I should run nvidia-xconfig as root. Doing so doesn't help, I simply get the same issue again. I checked the file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and it's an NVIDIA file (has nvidia in the header). Does anyone know something else I can try? EDIT: Forgot to mention, I tried installing drivers via the "Additional Drivers" GUI utility, there were two options, one of them marked "(post-release updates)". I tried both of them, in both cases it tried to download and install for a while, then said that there was an error, and that a description could be found at /var/log/jockey.log. • Help reinstalling Ubuntu on macbook pro

  Ok. I recently installed ubuntu on my macbook pro. Unfortunately, while trying to install the nvidia graphics drivers the system wouldn't reboot, the screen grey for hours. I concluded that I had broken ubuntu, and proceeded to boot into osx and remove the ubuntu partitions. After I had done that, after a reboot, I noticed that "boot linux from hd" was still listed in the bootloader (i'm using rEFIT). I dismissed it. Now, I'm trying to reinstall ubuntu, using the same USB that I successfully installed with earlier. Now, however, when the ubuntu installer is on the "copying files" part this error (more or less) pops up. ERRNO 5: We're sorry, the installer crashed. This error frequently is caused by faulty installation media, the hard disk being too hot... and so on and so forth. I'm not sure what's causing the problem, but I have a hunch that whatever's the reason that's causing linux to show up in rEFIT is the root reason. If anyone could respond, that would be great. PS, and unfortunately no, i do not have a time machine backup.

• Trouble installing from disk

  I'm writing this in desperation, Windows is slowly killing me and i need to change my home pc os to Ubuntu 11.04 as soon as possible. I created a USB flash drive to install ubuntu, twice, and both times they failed to begin install on restart of my pc. i read on another forum that you might have to change some boot sequence in BIOS but when pressing F2 to enter it didnt work. After a lot of cursing, I made myself an UBUNTU install cd and booted. To my excitement, it now displayed... try ubuntu and install ubuntu. i clicked install ubuntu which lead me to the preparing to install ubuntu display, i checked download updates while installing and clicked forward. The very next display is ' allocate drive space ' i assume there are meant to be options of drives provided but mine is just a blank box and underneath all the options to create a new partition table, add, change, delete and revert are all greyed out. There is a drop down menu labelled 'device for boot loader installlation' but the only option is /dev/sda. when i click install, a no root file system error comes up telling me to please correct from the partitioning menu. I am extremely frustrated. please!! can anyone help me...

• Attempting to install ubuntu 11.10

  I installed version 9 sometime ago and since have forgotten the process for partitioning, or the layout is different. I have 5 partitions but only have windows xp installed on the pc in question with that being the one of those 5 partitions which is ntfs 34444 mb its - a 40gig hard-drive. My first question is... is there a way to get a screen shot of the partitioner when I am running the demo session straight from disc... these 5 partitions are fragmenting the other 4ish gig needed to install.. I get an error message which says go back and make sure 1 partition has at least 2.5 gig or so. But I have no idea what I am supposed to set these remaining 4 partitions to in order to proceed.. I have read up on install guides and understand that one must be "/" root and another as swap... but to no avail thus far have the correct combo. A few screen shots will no doubt help you guys answer as I'm baffled as to what specific details to give as each one has various settings on inspection, and I don't really feel like writing it all down manually then posting specs for each one

• Random greyed unresponsive screen on netbook

  I love my Asus Eee PC 1000 Ubuntu 12.04 netbook, but I have a little problem. As I use it, the screen will randomly turn grey and become unresponsive. I can then only wait, until perhaps 10-60 secs. later, when I can interact again. Only the bar at the top of my screen retains its colour throughout. I thought it might be Firefox, as I have a lot of tabs open. I installed Chromium, used it instead, and the problem remained. A while back I upgraded from 1 to 2 Gb RAM. So, I thought recently, maybe I should increase the swap-space. I have 738Mb of 7.2Gb free on root; and 2Gb of 28Gb free on my home drive. I bought a 32 Gb SD Card and assigned 4Gb to swap space. cat /proc/swaps reports that the partition is being used. Alas the problem remains. Does anyone know what's wrong with my machine? The SD Card has changed my machine somewhat, but the greying still happens. I ran free -m shortly after another episode, and received: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2004 1731 272 0 370 769 -/+ buffers/cache: 591 1412 Swap: 4073 0 4073 Update: Using 'top', I can see that compiz uses about 43% of the CPU (#1 position) when the greying occurs. After the greying, compiz drops back down to its usual 8% of CPU.

• Virtualbox errors out when creating or opening VM

  I installed Virtual-box about a week ago and now every time I either try to start a VM or create a new one I get the error listed below. I am in the vboxusers group. I completely uninstalled and re-installed the application without any change in the error. When I run the command below I receive "command not found". Then when I try to install dkms they systems says it is already installed. Right now I have removed the application and any files and would love to re-install the application again to get it working. I remove the application using: sudo apt-get remove virtualbox* --purge Any ideas? Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. • Dual monitor, permission issue

  I had a dual monitor configuration going on for quite some time. One day, after moving the computer to another location and reconnecting everything, it changed such that I saw everything in double (being very much sober), I think it's called the 'mirrors' config. Anyway, from there on, there was nothing to be done through the system settings gui to change it back, as it wouldn't allow me to save any modification. The error I get when clicking 'save' is : "Failed to create file /home/me/monitors.xml.xxxxxx. Permission denied", xxxx being a random code, changing everytime. However, I can save all the configurations I want just fine by using the terminal, in my case: xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --right-of VGA-1 So I do have a workaround and this is therefore a question more out of curiosity. What could possibly have changed to make it impossible to do it through the gui and still letting me change the config using xrandr without being root? I'm having a hard time believing it could have anything to do with disconnecting/reconnecting the monitors... Any idea? Thanks !

• ubuntu doesn't boot without flash drive

  i just installed ubuntu 11.04 onto this netbook. I had to use a flash key . during the install , i tried putting ubuntu on a separate partition , but it kept showing a 'no root file system is defined'. i didn't really know what i could do to fix it , so i decided to install it alongside windows. i have a windows 7 installation which works perfectly fine. So , the installation goes through perfectly . i give both OS's 40 Gigs of space . The comp restarts and NOTHING !. The computer boots directly into windows. During the install it said i'm supposed to be prompted at boot, and nothing happened. Ubuntu partitioned the C: drive but this partition doesn't show up in windows. If i boot using the flash drive, it shows the partition with the ubuntu installation. I tried reinstalling but now i don't get the prompt to asking me to install ubuntu. Really confused ..

• Is it normal for GRUB to take some time (15+s) after I choose what to boot?

  I had been planning to change the background of my bootloader for a while, and finally got to it. Now the black screen I get for quite some time was made clear. It is still GRUB, because the background image stays, while all of the text is gone. Then it just simply shows the Lubuntu loading screen for, usually, not more than 3 seconds. I run Lubuntu 12.10. My question is, is this normal behaviour or is something going wrong, causing GRUB to take longer? • After installing Ubuntu my computer boots into GRUB rescue mode after displaying 'no such partition' error message.

  I wanted Ubuntu on my Gateway Solo Laptop. It had Win98 on the C:\ and WinXP on the D:\. Before the install, I could not boot from CD, but I could boot from floppy. I installed Ubuntu to run alongside Windows XP as that was one of the options. It didn't detect Win98, but I swear it's on there. Install seemed fine and then it asked me to reboot. When I rebooted, I got the message error: no such partition and the grub rescue> command prompt. I've looked around, but some commands, like sudo, don't work. One command I did get to work was set root=(hd0,0) if that helps. I'm a noob, and it was a pain installing Win98 and XP since this system is so old. I don't want to wipe my drive and start all over! Additional details copied from comments Addendum, I restored my master boot record via my Win98 boot floppy and typing in frisk /mbr. But, I'd still like to get ubuntu - any help? If I restored my master boot record - did I delete Ubuntu?

• Updating to linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic occupies all disk space

  I just ran a normal update through the update manager that wanted to update me to linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic. The installation paused halfway with a message that the root was full. I checked the disk usage, and noticed that one of the newly installed files: /lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/modules.ccwmap took up 63GB(!). Compared to the previous version: /lib/modules/3.2.0-24-generic/modules.ccwmap that took up only 4KB it seems like something went awfully wrong! As mentioned the update was paused when i ran out of disk space. There is no option in the update dialog to cancel or perform rollback on the update. Is it asking for trouble to kill the update manager? Any ideas as to what went wrong, and what I can do to remedy it? It's only minimal how much space I can free on that partition (without deleting the above mentioned file). If it is any help, the update was paused after this: Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d. run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.2.0-26-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-26-generic

• Very slow wireless connection (unrelated to power management) using Netgear N150 WNA1100 in 12.04

  I am using a Netgear N150 WNA1100 USB Adapter. The network driver is: ath9k_htc. When I use Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless connection is much slower than when I use the WNA1100 with my Windows 7 installation on the same machine. I have been researching this and the most common reason for this seems to be related to power management. However for me this is off by default. I had entered a bunch of different commands and, at one stage, I got it to work at full power. But then I rebooted the machine and it went back to slow again. After entering the different commands I was afraid that I may have messed something up, so I performed a fresh install of Ubuntu. I still have the same problem. My wireless connection is still much slower when using Ubuntu than when using Windows 7. I am not sure what other info could help... EDIT: Ok, I have made live usb from the iso file I used to install Ubuntu on this pc, and ran it on my laptop. Still the same problem. However la[top works grand on cable. I suppose this means that my wireless adapter or network driver can be eliminated as root of the problem.. So maybe to do with router itself? I use ZyXEL P-660HW-D1

• Error Installing COM+ (Error Code: 80131501)

  I've written a class library that reads from an xml file and return the result as a string. But when I want to install it as a COM+ component, an error occurred (Error Code: 80131501). I checked the event log and the details of the error is: Installation of 'C:\Users\User\Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\InteropSOA\InteropSOA\bin\Debug\InteropSOA.dll' into '{28E82165-AD74-4E16-90C9-0C5CE7DA97AA}' failed with an exception: System.EnterpriseServices.RegistrationException: FATAL: Could not find component 'InteropSOA.ConfigReader' we just installed. at System.EnterpriseServices.RegistrationDriver.InstallAssembly(RegistrationConfig regConfig, Object obSync) at System.EnterpriseServices.RegistrationHelper.InstallAssemblyFromConfig(RegistrationConfig& regConfig) at System.EnterpriseServices.RegistrationHelper.InstallAssembly(String assembly, String& application, String partition, String& tlb, InstallationFlags installFlags) at System.EnterpriseServices.Internal.ComManagedImportUtil.InstallAssembly(String asmpath, String parname, String appname) Below are the steps I've done while developing the class library: Added "System.EnterpriseServices" to Reference. Imported the reference to the class. Declared the class as "ServicedComponent". Set project properties ("Make assembly COM-visible" checked, "Register for COM Interop" checked, Signed the assembly with a strong key file name.)
