Languages and VMs: Features that are hard to optimize and why

I'm doing a survey of features in preparation for a research project. Name a mainstream language or language feature that is hard to optimize, and why the feature is or isn't worth the price paid, or instead, just debunk my theories below with anecdotal evidence. Before anyone flags this as subjective, I am asking for specific examples of languages or features, and ideas for optimization of these features, or important features that I haven't considered. Also, any references to implementations that prove my theories right or wrong. Top on my list of hard to optimize features and my theories (some of my theories are untested and are based on thought experiments): 1) Runtime method overloading (aka multi-method dispatch or signature based dispatch). Is it hard to optimize when combined with features that allow runtime recompilation or method addition. Or is it just hard, anyway? Call site caching is a common optimization for many runtime systems, but multi-methods add additional complexity as well as making it less practical to inline methods. 2) Type morphing / variants (aka value based typing as opposed to variable based) Traditional optimizations simply cannot be applied when you don't know if the type of someting can change in a basic block. Combined with multi-methods, inlining must be done carefully if at all, and probably only for a given threshold of size of the callee. ie. it is easy to consider inlining simple property fetches (getters / setters) but inlining complex methods may result in code bloat. The other issue is I cannot just assign a variant to a register and JIT it to the native instructions because I have to carry around the type info, or every variable needs 2 registers instead of 1. On IA-32 this is inconvenient, even if improved with x64's extra registers. This is probably my favorite feature of dynamic languages, as it simplifies so many things from the programmer's perspective. 3) First class continuations - There are multiple ways to implement them, and I have done so in both of the most common approaches, one being stack copying and the other as implementing the runtime to use continuation passing style, cactus stacks, copy-on-write stack frames, and garbage collection. First class continuations have resource management issues, ie. we must save everything, in case the continuation is resumed, and I'm not aware if any languages support leaving a continuation with "intent" (ie. "I am not coming back here, so you may discard this copy of the world"). Having programmed in the threading model and the contination model, I know both can accomplish the same thing, but continuations' elegance imposes considerable complexity on the runtime and also may affect cache efficienty (locality of stack changes more with use of continuations and co-routines). The other issue is they just don't map to hardware. Optimizing continuations is optimizing for the less-common case, and as we know, the common case should be fast, and the less-common cases should be correct. 4) Pointer arithmetic and ability to mask pointers (storing in integers, etc.) Had to throw this in, but I could actually live without this quite easily. My feelings are that many of the high-level features, particularly in dynamic languages just don't map to hardware. Microprocessor implementations have billions of dollars of research behind the optimizations on the chip, yet the choice of language feature(s) may marginalize many of these features (features like caching, aliasing top of stack to register, instruction parallelism, return address buffers, loop buffers and branch prediction). Macro-applications of micro-features don't necessarily pan out like some developers like to think, and implementing many languages in a VM ends up mapping native ops into function calls (ie. the more dynamic a language is the more we must lookup/cache at runtime, nothing can be assumed, so our instruction mix is made up of a higher percentage of non-local branching than traditional, statically compiled code) and the only thing we can really JIT well is expression evaluation of non-dynamic types and operations on constant or immediate types. It is my gut feeling that bytecode virtual machines and JIT cores are perhaps not always justified for certain languages because of this. I welcome your answers.

Iteration, or copying in XSL, based on a count. How do I do it?

I'm trying to create an inventory list (tab-delimited text, for the output) from XML data. The catch is, I need to take the line that I created, and list it multiple times (iterate ???), based on a number found in the XML. So, from the XML below: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <library> <aisle label="AA"> <row>bb</row> <shelf>a</shelf> <books>4</books> </aisle> <aisle label="BB"> <row>cc</row> <shelf>d</shelf> <books>3</books> </aisle> </library> I need to take the value found in "books", and then copy the text line that number of times. The result looking like this: Aisle Row Shelf Titles AA bb a AA bb a AA bb a AA bb a BB cc d BB cc d BB cc d So that the inventory taker, can then write in the titles found on each shelf. ADO program to list members of a large group.

Hi everyone, I'm attempting to list all the members in a Active Directory group using ADO. The problem I have is that many of these groups have over 1500 members and ADSI cannot handle more than 1500 items in a multi-valued attribute. Fortunately I came across Richard Muller's wonderful VBScript that handles more than 1500 members at http://www.rlmueller.net/DocumentLargeGroup.htm I modified his code as shown below so that I can list ALL the groups and its memberships in a certain OU. However, I'm keeping getting the exception shown below: "ADODB.Recordset: Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal." My program appears to get stuck at: strPath = adoRecordset.Fields("ADsPath").Value Set objGroup = GetObject(strPath) All I am doing above is issuing the query to get back a recordset consisting of the ADsPath for each group in the OU. It then walks through the recordset and grabs the ADsPath for the first group and store its in a variable named strPath; we then use the value of that variable to bind to the group account for that group. Getting a seg fault, having trouble with classes and variables.

Ok, so I'm still learning the ropes of C++ here so I apologize if this is a simple mistake. My question is, "Why?" In the constructor of the RunFrame class I can seemingly call methods for the command variable in the same way I'm doing so in the OnKey method...and it compiles correctly, it just seg faults on me when it attempts to execute that line. Retrieving data with Selenium

Hi everyone, I want to get the business hours from ScotiaBank branches that are near to me. The base-URL is: http://maps.scotiabank.com/ I then, Click on the "Branches" radiobox. Click on the "Open Saturdays" checkbox. Enter "B3H 1M7" (my postal code) into the search box. Click the Search button. Click on the first result that pops up (Micmac shopping centre). Store the business hours as a variable (called businessHours). And now I'm stuck. How can I export the data that I assigned to the variable to a text file or anywhere else where I can view it later? I'm not sure if this is even possible with Selenium, but if it's not, can you tell me an alternative of how I could do this? How to allow multiple filters to be selected - pagination?

Hey, I am still trying to allow multiple filters to be selected for my pagination script but not sure how to do it being very new to php and programing in general. So in my pagination, when a user clicks the 'marketing' button(link) it queries the database just for the category that = marketing. The same goes for the other 2 filter buttons as seen in the script below. (automotive, sports). The problem is, I want to be able to select multiple filters like only marketing and auomotive or automotive and sports, for example if I click the marketing filter and then the automotive, it would display the categories that equal marketing, and automotive. I have no idea how to accomplish this, so I have come to the experts to help me out. How can I add a previous button to this Jquery Content Slider?

I don't know much about jquery but I tried to set the left button from opacity o to 100 or 1 and it didn't work the button showed up once but did not work. Does anyone know how to do this? Wordpress blog with Joomla?

Hi, I had this Wordpress installation which was installed in a subfolder (not root). Like http: //server/blog/. Now, I installed Joomla on the root (http: //server/). Everything seems to be working fine with the Joomla part. However, the blog part is messed up. If I try to browse the homepage of my blog which is http: //server/blog/ it works like a charm. But while trying to view individual blog pages like say, http: //server/blog/some_category/some_post I get a Joomla 404 page. So, I was wondering if it was possible to use both Wordpress and Joomla in the same server in the setup I am trying to. Let me clarify that I am NOT looking to integrate user login and other such things. I just want the blog to be functional under a subfolder while I run the Joomla site in the root. So, what is the correct way to go about it. Can this be solved by any .config edits or something else? Edit: Here's the .htaccess for Joomla ... Cutting large XML file into smaller pieces in C#

I have a problem that I'm working on for quite some time now. I have an XML file with over 50000 records (one record has 3 levels). This file is used by one of my applications to control document sending (the record holds, among other informations, the type of document that has to be sent to a certain person). So in my application I load the XML file into a XmlDocument, and then by using SelectNodes method, I create a XmlNodeList from which I read the data I want. The process is like this - our worker takes the persons ID card (simple eith barcode) and reads it with barcode reader. When the barcode value has been read, my application finds the person with that ID in the XML file, and stores the type of the document into a string variable. Then the worker takes the document and reads its barcode, and if the value of documents barcode and the value in the value in the string variable match, the application makes a record that document of type xxxxxxxx will be sent to the person with ID yyyyyyyyy. This works, but only for files that have up to 2000 records (and my has way more than that). So, if I need to cut the file into smaller pieces, what would be the best way to do it (keep in mind that there could be up to half a million records in a XML file)? Thanks

Do you know of a C macro to compute Unix time and date?

I'm wondering if someone knows/has a C macro to compute a static Unix time from a hard coded date and time as in: time_t t = UNIX_TIMESTAMP(2012, 5, 10, 9, 26, 13); I'm looking into that because I want to have a numeric static timestamp. This will be done hundred of times throughout the software, each time with a different date, and I want to make sure it is fast because it will run hundreds of times every second. Converting dates that many times would definitively slow down things (i.e. calling mktime() is slower than having a static number compiled in place, right?) [made an update to try to render this paragraph clearer, Nov 23, 2012] Update I want to clarify the question with more information about the process being used. As my server receives requests, for each request, it starts a new process. That process is constantly updated with new plugins and quite often such updates require a database update. Those must be run only once. To know whether an update is necessary, I want to use a Unix date (which is better than using a counter because a counter is much more likely to break once in a while.) The plugins will thus receive an update signal and have their on_update() function called. There I want to do something like this: void some_plugin::on_update(time_t last_update) { if(last_update < UNIX_TIMESTAMP(2010, 3, 22, 20, 9, 26)) { ...run update... } if(last_update < UNIX_TIMESTAMP(2012, 5, 10, 9, 26, 13)) { ...run update... } // as many test as required... } As you can see, if I have to compute the unix timestamp each time, this could represent thousands of calls per process and if you receive 100 hits a second x 1000 calls, you wasted 100,000 calls when you could have had the compiler compute those numbers once at compile time. Putting the value in a static variable is of no interest because this code will run once per process run. Note that the last_update variable changes depending on the website being hit (it comes from the database.) how to add multiple filters to pagination?

Hey, I am trying to allow multiple filters to be selected for my pagination script. So in my pagination, when a user clicks the 'marketing' button(link) it queries the database just for the category that = marketing. The same goes for the other 2 filter buttons as seen in the script below. (automotive, sports). The problem is, I want to be able to select multiple filters like only marketing and auomotive or automotive and sports, for example if I click the marketing filter and then the automotive, it would display the categories that equal marketing, and automotive. I have no idea how to accomplish this, so I have come to the experts to help me out. Very simple shopping cart, remove button

Im writing sales software that will be walking through a set of pages and on certain pages there are items listed to sell and when you click buy it basically just passes a hidden variable to the next page to be set as a session variable, and then when you get to the end it call gets reported to a database. However my employer wanted me to include a shopping cart, and this shopping cart should display the item name, sku, and price of whatever you're buying, as well as a remove button so the person doing the script doesnt need to go back through the entire thing to remove one item. At the moment I have the cart set to display everything, which was fairly simple. but I cant figure out how to get the remove button to work. How to find an element in an array in C

I am trying to find the location of an element in the array. I have assigned strings to var[i] and i want to get the "i" number of my element NOT THE ADRESS. Thanks for any comment. EDit: temp is also a pointer which points to the string that i want to check. Also i am using the 2D array for keeping variable names and their address. So yes i want to keep it inside a 2D array. How to define template directives (from an API perspective)?

Preface I'm writing a template language (don't bother trying to talk me out of it), and in it, there are two kinds of user-extensible nodes. TemplateTags and TemplateDirectives. A TemplateTag closely relates to an HTML tag -- it might look something like div(class="green") { "content" } And it'll be rendered as <div class="green">content</div> i.e., it takes a bunch of attributes, plus some content, and spits out some HTML. TemplateDirectives are a little more complicated. They can be things like for loops, ifs, includes, and other such things. They look a lot like a TemplateTag, but they need to be processed differently. For example, @for($i in $items) { div(class="green") { $i } } Would loop over $items and output the content with the variable $i substituted in each time. So.... I'm trying to decide on a way to define these directives now. Template Tags The TemplateTags are pretty easy to write. They look something like this: [TemplateTag] static string div(string content = null, object attrs = null) { return HtmlTag("div", content, attrs); } Where content gets the stuff between the curly braces (pre-rendered if there are variables in it and such), and attrs is either a Dictionary<string,object> of attributes, or an anonymous type used like a dictionary. Basically, the stuff between the ( and ) is not split into arguments automatically (like the template tags do), and the content isn't pre-rendered either. The reason it isn't pre-rendered is because you might want to add or remove some template variables or something first. In this case, we add the $i variable to the template variables, var templateVars = new Dictionary<string, object>(data) { { itemName, item } }; And then render the content manually, sb.Append(template.Render(templateVars)); Question I'm wondering if this is the best approach to defining custom Template Directives. I want to make it as easy as possible. What if the user doesn't know how to render templates, or doesn't know that he's supposed to? Maybe I should pass in a Template instance pre-filled with the content instead? Or maybe only let him tamper w/ the template variables, and then automatically render the content at the end? OTOH, for things like "if" if the condition fails, then the template wouldn't need to be rendered at all. So there's a lot of flexibility I need to allow in here. Thoughts?

PHP $_GET and $_POST are returning empty arrays--trying to paginate SQL data

I have set up the following: Database class ($db) Pagination class ($paginator) I am attempting to write a basic system to let me administrate pages. I have a page "page_manager.php" in which I include both my database class (database.php) and my pagination class (paginate.php). In my pagination class I have a function which echoes my SQL data. I've come up with a way to echo an HTML < select element with the necessary IDs, which allows me to successfully echo the corresponding results (10 per page), based on the value of the < select element. So, "1" will echo the first 10 results in the database, "2" will echo from 11-20, "3" will echo from 21-30, etc., etc.. I have added an onChange event to the < select element which will copy its value (using "this.value") to a hidden form field. I then submit this form using document.getElementById().submit(); This will then add the $_GET variable to the URL, so the URL becomes ".../?pagenumber_form=X". However, when I try to grab this value back from the URL, the $_GET['pagenumber_form'] is empty. If I move my print_r($_GET) to my main index page, then the superglobals are returning as expected. My site structure is like this: index.php - JavaScript buttons use AJAX HTTP requests to include the "responseText" as the .innerHTML of my main < div . The "responseText" is the contents the page itself, in this case page_manager.php, which in turn includes pagination.php. So in other words, my site is built from PHP includes, which doesn't seem to be compatible with HTTP superglobals. Any idea how I can get around this problem? Thank you :-).

Two functions working but not when I put them together

I'm really new to C(I have been learning Cuda and wanted to learn C so I can run everything together instead of generating data in Java/Python and copy/pasting it manually to my Cuda program to play with). I am trying to open a large file(20+gb) and parse some data but because I was having problems I decided to try to break down my problem first to verify I can open and read line by line a file and then in another file take a sample of the output of a line and try to parse it, then if all goes well I can simply bring them together. I managed(after a bit of a struggle) to get each part working but when I combine them together it doesn't work(I tried in both eclipse & QT creator. QT creator says it exited unexpectedly and eclipse just stops..). Use of select or multithread for almost 80 or more clients?

I am working on one project in which i need to read from 80 or more clients and then write their o/p into a file continuously and then read these new data for another task. My question is what should i use select or multithreading? Also I tried to use multi threading using read/fgets and write/fputs call but as they are blocking calls and one operation can be performed at one time so it is not feasible. Any idea is much appreciated. update 1: I have tried to implement the same using condition variable. I able to achieve this but it is writing and reading one at a time.When another client tried to write then it cannot able to write unless i quit from the 1st thread. I do not understand this. To sum up this Fotran code - it's a numerical simulation of a flight vehicle. This code has a fairly rigid procedural framework one must work within, which comes with a pre-defined list of allowable Fortran types. The Fortran glue code can create an instance of a C++ object (in actuality, a reference from the perspective of Fortran), but is not aware what is contained in it (other means are used to extract C++ data into Fortran). The problem that I encountered is when a C++ module is dynamically linked to the Fortran glue code, C++ objects have to be initialized each instance the C++ code is called. This happens by virtue of how the Fortran template is defined. To avoid this cycle of re-initializing objects, I plan to use 'State' as a container class. The Fortran code allows a 'State' object, which has an arbitrary definition; but I plan to use it to harness all relevant information about the model. The idea is to use the Parameters class (which is exposed and updated by the Fortran code) to update variables in States.

Unable to install Xdebug

I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? ie7 innerhtml strange display problem

Hello, I am having a strange problem with ie7 (ie8 in compatibility mode). I have div containers where I am updating values using javascript innhtml to update the values. This works fine in Firefox and ie8. In ie7 the values do not update but if a click on the values and highlight them then they update, also if a change the height of the browser then on the next update the values get updated correctly. I have figured out that if I change the position property of the outer div container from relative to static then the updates work correctly. The page can be viewed here http://islendingasogur.net/test/webmap_html_test.html In internet explorer 8 with compatibility turned on you can see that the timestamp in the gray box only gets updated one time, after that you see no changes. The timestamp in the lower right corner gets updated every 10 seconds. But if you highlight the text in the gray box then the updated timestamp values appears!
