  • Excel + Web Data

    I've spent hours scouring the net for anything to do with VBA calling data from the web in excel and nothing provides a tutorial on how to do so, only complicated examples un-related to what I want to do. I want to pull data from either a .html or .xml site, doesn't matter, via Excel and find specific points in that data. I can find specific points but don't know how to get the data or scroll through multiple lines. I've done this exact sort of thing in mIRC (sort of C code). http://eve-central.com/home/quicklook.html?typeid=438 http://api.eve-central.com/api/quicklook?typeid=438 Those are two examples, using roughly the same data I'd like to retrieve. It'd be FAR more specific with at most 100 or so different values. I'd like to be TAUGHT how to do it, not given the code to do it, or if you must explain each part with comments in-depth please.     If I have an XPath query like NodeA/NodeB[@WIDTH and not(@WIDTH="20")] | NodeC[@WIDTH and not(@WIDTH="20")]/NodeD Is there any API available to visualize this XPath query as a stack of atomic expressions, something like (following is generic) Get results of NodeA, call it "first set" Get results of NodeB from "first set" Filter where [@WIDTH and not(@WIDTH="20")] Filter NodeD, call this "node d for B" Get results of NodeC from "first set" Filter where [@WIDTH and not(@WIDTH="20")] Filter NodeD, call this "node d for C" Combine "node d for B" and "node d for C" I am trying to see if we can convert the XPath expression into custom expression which is close to english and vice versa.   • Manage build target variables in iphone project

    We're transitioning to an automated build process for our iphone projects. These projects can be checked out by individual devs, in which case all the API URLs need to point to a certain path. There are also a variety of build environments, each with their own API root paths. I could probably add multiple, different build targets, and have each of them include a different URLs definition file, but this seems like a lot of upkeep and a bit overkill. Any best practices out there for swapping a few environmental variables for different build environments without much fuss?

    Is there a way to control the output filenames of an Hadoop Streaming job? Specifically I would like my job's output files content and name to be organized by the ket the reducer outputs - each file would only contain values for one key and its name would be the key.   • Does C++ require a destructor call for each placement new?

    I understand that placement new calls are usually matched with explicit calls to the destructor. My question is: if I have no need for a destructor (no code to put there, and no member variables that have destructors) can I safely skip the explicit destructor call? Here is my use case: I want to write C++ bindings for a C API. In the C API many objects are accessible only by pointer. Instead of creating a wrapper object that contains a single pointer (which is wasteful and semantically confusing). I want to use placement new to construct an object at the address of the C object. The C++ object will do nothing in its constructor or destructor, and its methods will do nothing but delegate to the C methods. The C++ object will contain no virtual methods. I have two parts to this question. Is there any reason why this idea will not work in practice on any production compiler? Does this technically violate the C++ language spec?

    A client of mine has asked me to integrate a 3rd party API into their Rails app. The only problem is that the API uses SOAP. Ruby has basically dropped SOAP in favor of REST. They provide a Java adapter that apparently works with the Java-Ruby bridge, but we'd like to keep it all in Ruby, if possible. I looked into soap4r, but it seems to have a slightly bad reputation. So what's the best way to integrate SOAP calls into a Rails app?

    I got this little snippet where I call a Battlefield 3 stat server. If you visit this URL, which I'm calling, we'll be getting no errors: http://api.bf3stats.com/pc/server/?output=json&id=534f7035-cef8-48aa-b233-8d44a0956e68 But when I try to get the stats via Ajax call, I get: Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token : ... In my console I can see that the response is coming in, as when I visit the url, but I can't get the data with the ajax call...     If you've written a class in JavaScript that calls a remote service's API, and that remote API offers a callback, how do you get the response back into the instance of the object that made the request?   • MySQL: How to consume/discard the result of a query?

    I have a stored procedure which executes an optimize table statement for every table in a DB. Those optimize table statements are prepared statements of course (they have to be built at runtime) and I need to call that procedure from PHP using ext/mysql API. Unfortunately, ext/mysql does't support doing such thing because optimize table returns a result set and in order to handle that, the new mysql protocol is required, which is supported by the "new" ext/mysqli API. Well... there are several things I dont have control over, so it's not in my posibilities to upgrade to ext/mysqli any time soon, nor can I implement the procedure as PHP code rather than sql code. So I thought if it would be possible somehow to consume/discard the result of optimize table inside the stored procedure so that ext/mysql doesn't complain about it. One thing to consider is that since the optimize table statements are prepared statements, you can't use a cursor over them.

  • FTP - way to programatically determine time remaining or bytes transfered?

    Hi all I want to make an FTP connection (ideally using Coldfusion 8, but Java is fine too) that will copy a file to a remote server. Crucially however, I want to know how many bytes have been transferred so I can give some feedback to the user. Is this possible, and if so what FTP API would you recommend as I understand the Sun implementation may be a bit lacking. Thanks in advance! PS: I could have another process/thread poll the file size on the destination machine via a web service call while the file is being transferred but it's not ideal. Getting it through FTP API would be the neatest solution.

  • How do you deal with the more mundane parts of programming tasks?

    My experience as a developer is that many projects or tickets are a mix of a short and focused very interesting task (e.g., designing some API or a platform to solve something) and a lot of repetitive and mundane tasks that cannot be automated (such as certain refactorings to use the API or platform, implementation of certain tests, some GUI handling, etc). I believe that this is the nature of our profession, unless we are high-level architects or managements and can delegate this work. The only item in my personal arsenal when dealing with these tasks is to devote some of my attention to radio or audiobooks (preferably not in English as I find it hard to concentrate on two "streams" of English at the same time). I maintain sufficient attention to carry the task and don't lose concentration as fast. I'm wondering how others cope with these and maintain concentration.

  • Android: Maps - Best way to provide 'search for location' feature?

    Hello all, I've got an android app that uses a map activity and serves up content based on map location. I'm looking for a way to allow the user to search for a location by name (anything from 'New York' to 'Eiffel Tower') - e.g. have a text input field into which they could type 'Rome' - after pressing a button, the user would be brought to the coordinates of Rome on the map. What would be the best way to go about this? I've looked into the google geocoding api (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/geocoding/), but it has limitations of 2,500 geolocation requests per day - I'm presuming this is per API key? Or is it per user/source IP? 2,500 requests for one android app woudln't last long. Ideally, I would be able to search for English and foreign names of countries. Thanks in advance! r3mo

  • Unit testing task queues in AppEngine

    For a very long time now I've been using task queues on AppEngine to schedule tasks, just the way I'm supposed to. But what I've always been wondering is how does one write tests for that? Until now I've simply made tests to make sure an error doesn't occur on the API that queues a task and then wrote the more proper tests for the API executing the task. However lately I've started feeling a bit unsatisfied by this and I'm searching for a way to actually test that the correct task has been added to the correct queue. Hopefully this can be done better than simply by deploying the code and hoping for the best. I'm using django-nonrel, if that has any bearing on the answer. To recap: How can a unit test be written to confirm tasks have been queued?

I have the following Bean: public class MyEntry { private String entityID; public String getEntityID() { return this.entityID; } public void setEntityID(final String entityID) { this.entityID = entityID; } } And the following XML structure: <entries> <entry> <MyID> 24309LAGH1 </MyID> </entry> </entries> I use the addSetNestedProperties(…) method of the digester API: digester.addSetNestedProperties("entries/entry", "MyID", "entryID"); The following exception occurs: java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: Bean has no property named MyID Why is digester searching for a property named “MyID”?   • Getting All categories in external page.

    This is very basic magento question i guess. I want to first get all the store categories, then loop through them to get their sub-categories and products and similarly continue till the last sub-category. I will be using this in an external page having Mage::app() declared at the top of the page. I am not aware of the Magento API's(if thats wat they are called) to use to get this functionality. Remember I am not using this in any of the templates, so something like getCurrentCategory() will not work here i guess. Also please guide if there are any good resources to search for particular functionality in magento and API's to implement it, or am i doomed to go through their phpdoc to know the list of methods. Any help here will be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

  • Major inconsistencies in Zend Framework

    Okay first of all let me just say Zend Framework is the greatest tool I have ever used in 30+ years of programming (well, for web development, Qt wins the desktop market). However, through my use I have noticed some glaring and annoying inconsistencies. For instance, Zend_Form_Element's have a setAttrib() method. Now why the hell is this the only method in that API which is abbrev.? Why then am I using setRequired() instead of setReq()? I have more examples, I am extremely nerd raged about this. It is completely ruining what could have been God's gift to web development. FOR FUTURE REFERENCE NEVER ABBREV. THINGS WHEN MAKING AN API. also always filter data before storing it i m o Who do we talk to about this, where something will actually get done about it?
