• Keyboard's media keys are blocked by a program

  I've got a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. In addition to the regular keys, it's also got keys for Web/Home, Search, Mail, Favorites (5), Calculator, and Media functions (Mute, Volume Up/Down, and Play/Pause). Everything works most of the time, and the exception is rather odd. I use a programming system called Clarion. When that has focus, the Media keys don't work. (All the others still do.) I've also discovered that programs that I create using Clarion also block the media keys (only when they have focus). This indicates that it's probably something in Clarion's Run-Time Library (RTL) that's causing the trouble. The keys will work if I click on a non-Clarion window before hitting the media key, but that's an undesirable hassle. The odd thing is that I have many colleagues with the same keyboard, and they have no problem. When I recently upgraded from Vista Professional to Win7 Ultimate, I noticed that various things "appear" differently. For example, with my old system, when I changed the volume or muted the volume bar visualization always appeared at the bottom right on the screen. Now it doesn't appear in certain programs, even when it works. This indicates an order of precedence for visual elements. I'm fairly certain a similar order of precedence exists for keyboard hooks. Depending on how the hooks are defined, and the order in which they're applied, it would seem that sometimes the IntelliType drivers don't see the media keystrokes. The Media keys probably behave differently than the rest of the "special" keys, because they are more of a standard across all keyboards, so perhaps are handled by a different driver hooking mechanism. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I might fix this problem? Is there some way to change the order of hooks? Delay the loading of the IntelliType driver? Thanks in advance!

• SQL 2005 indexed queries slower than unindexed queries

  Adding a seemingly perfectly index is having an unexpectedly adverse affect on a query performance... -- [Data] has a predictable structure and a simple clustered index of the primary key: ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Data] ADD PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ID] ) -- My query, joins on itself looking for a certain kind of "overlapping" records SELECT DISTINCT [Data].ID AS [ID] FROM dbo.[Data] AS [Data] JOIN dbo.[Data] AS [Compared] ON [Data].[A] = [Compared].[A] AND [Data].[B] = [Compared].[B] AND [Data].[C] = [Compared].[C] AND ([Data].[D] = [Compared].[D] OR [Data].[E] = [Compared].[E]) AND [Data].[F] <> [Compared].[F] WHERE 1=1 AND [Data].[A] = @A AND @CS <= [Data].[C] AND [Data].[C] < @CE -- Between a range [Data] has about a quarter-million records so far, 10% to 50% of the data satisfies the where clause depending on @A, @CS, and @CE. As is, the query takes 1 second to return about 300 rows when querying 10%, and 30 seconds to return 3000 rows when querying 50% of the data. Curiously, the estimated/actual execution plan indicates two parallel Clustered Index Scans, but the clustered index is only of the ID, which isn't part of the conditions of the query, only the output. ?? If I add this hand-crafted [IDX_A_B_C_D_E_F] index which I fully expected to improve performance, the query slows down by a factor of 8 (8 seconds for 10% & 4 minutes for 50%). The estimated/actual execution plans show an Index Seek, which seems like the right thing to be doing, but why so slow?? CREATE UNIQUE INDEX [IDX_A_B_C_D_E_F] ON [dbo].[Data] ([A], [B], [C], [D], [E], [F]) INCLUDE ([ID], [X], [Y], [Z]); The Data Engine Tuning wizard suggests a similar index with no noticeable difference in performance from this one. Moving AND [Data].[F] <> [Compared].[F] from the join condition to the where clause makes no difference in performance. I need these and other indexes for other queries. I'm sure I could hint that the query should refer to the Clustered Index, since that's currently winning - but we all know it is not as optimized as it could be, and without a proper index, I can expect the performance will get much worse with additional data. What gives?

• Binding WPF ComboBox in XAML - Why is it Empty?

  I am trying to learn how to bind my simple database (.sdf) to a combobox. I created a dataset with my tables in it. I then dragged a table from the DataSource onto my control. I have dragged datagrids from the DataSource as well, but they are not populated either. Any idea?

• Android: How to get a custom view to redraw partially?

  I have a custom view that fills my entire screen. (A piano keyboard) When a user touches the key, it would cause a invalidate() to be called and the whole keyboard gets redrawn to show the new state with a touched key. Currently the view is very simple, but I plan to add a bit more nice graphics. Since the whole keyboard is dynamically rendered this would make redrawing the entire keyboard more expensive. So I thought, let's look into partial redrawing. Now I call invalidate(Rect dirty) with the correct dirty region. I set my onDraw(Canvas canvas) method to only draw the keys in the dirty region if I do indeed want a partial redraw. This results in those keys being drawn, but the rest of the keyboard is totally black/not drawn at all. Am I wrong in expecting that calling invalidate(Rect dirty) would "cache" the current canvas, and only "allows" drawing in the dirty region? Is there any way I can achieve what I want? (A way to "cache" the canvas and only redraw the dirty area?"

  I am trying to query the following registry key values: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SharedMemoryOn HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SuperSocketNetLib\ProtocolOrder But depending on which machine I'm running the program the query returns null. • should this database table be normalized?

  i have taken over a database that stores fitness information and we were having a debate about a certain table and whether it should stay as one table or get broken up into three tables. Today, there is one table called: workouts that has the following fields id, exercise_id, reps, weight, date, person_id So if i did 2 sets of 3 different exercises on one day, i would have 6 records in that table for that day. for example: id, exercise_id, reps, weight, date, person_id 1, 1, 10, 100, 1/1/2010, 10 2, 1, 10, 100, 1/1/2010, 10 3, 1, 10, 100, 1/1/2010, 10 4, 2, 10, 100, 1/1/2010, 10 5, 2, 10, 100, 1/1/2010, 10 6, 2, 10, 100, 1/1/2010, 10 So the question is, given that there is some redundant data (date, personid, exercise_id) in multiple records, should this be normalized to three tables WorkoutSummary: - id - date - person_id WorkoutExercise: - id - workout_id (foreign key into WorkoutSummary) - exercise_id WorkoutSets: - id - workout_exercise_id (foreign key into WorkoutExercise) - reps - weight I would guess the downside is that the queries would be slower after this refactoring as now we would need to join 3 tables to do the same query that had no joins before. The benefit of the refactoring allows up in the future to add new fields at the workout summary level or the exercise level with out adding in more duplication. any feedback on this debate?

• jQuery set selected value in option box once the box has been loaded

  I want to preset the value of a selectbox based on a hidden field. I need this after an error has been detected in a form to avoid the user having to set the value themselves again. I do this by setting the value of a hidden field server side. The problem I have seems to be that the select box isn't done yet at the time I try to set the selected value. And key 2 is different from them all. When running the array_unique function on them, the only left is Array ( [0] => Array ( [0] => 33 [user_id] => 33 [1] => 3 [frame_id] => 3 ) ) any ideas why array_unique isn't working as expected?

  I am attempting to use a property on my model that is of type Dictionary<string, string>. This dictionary is one of several other properties on the model, and I am using the dictionary as a key/value store to produce a 'dynamic' form. E.G.: User Name Settings A B I want to be able to submit and save any changes to settings A and B. • How to tell what name RIA Services/EF Model uses for Associations?

  Hi, I'm working on a C#.NET 3.5 WCF RIA Services app and having an issue with my Entity Framework model. My entity Foo is mapped to a DB table and has a primary key called FooId. My Bar is mapped to a DB view. I've selectively designed this view to generate a composite key in the EF using two of the columns (by making sure they were non-nullable and the others are all nullable. This was done using NULLIF and ISNULL in the view design.) I'm able to add this view to the model with no problem but I keep running into an issue when I try to map an association between the two. Foo should contain many Bars but I keep getting the following error when I add the association: Unable to retrieve AssociationType for association 'FK_Bar_Foo' According to this page, it looks like this might work if I can properly name the association (since RIA Services looks for specific names.) I've tried several variants of names that match the pattern of other associations with no success. Does anyone know if there's a place I can look to find out what name it's looking for? Thanks,

  Greetings stack overflow community. I've recently started building an OLAP cube in SSAS2008 and have gotten stuck. I would be grateful if someone could at least point me towards the right direction. Situation: Two fact tables, same cube. FactCalls holds information about calls made by subscribers, FactTopups holds topup data. Both tables have numerous common dimensions one of them being the Subscriber dimension. FactCalls             FactTopups SubscriberKey      SubscriberKey CallDuration         DateKey CallCost               Topup Value ... What I am trying to achieve is to be able to build FactCalls reports based on distinct subscribers that have topped up their accounts within the last 7 days. What I am basically looking for an MDX equivalent to SQL's: select * from FactCalls where SubscriberKey in ( select distinct SubscriberKey from FactTopups where ... ); I've tried creating a degenerate dimension for both tables containing SubscriberKey and doing: Exist( [Calls Degenerate].[Subscriber Key].Children, [Topups Degenerate].[Subscriber Key].Children ) Without success. • Aero Snap not working for my application

  I have a problem with Aero Snap not working with the application I'm working on (Windows desktop, native C++ application), and I'm a bit confused as to what's happening, as it seems like it should just work, out of the box.   i am developing an application in wpf using MVVM design pattern. i have a listbox when an item is slected then a dialog is open having the same record in editable mode. this dialog is binded with the selected item of the list. i have apply the validation rule for textbox using IDataErrorInfo. when the user update a record on dialogbox then at every key press, the selected record in listbox is also changed. if the user press save button then i submit changes to database. but if user click cancel button then i do not submit changes to database but the list box is updated with the current updation in GUI. when i refresh the list then old value appears again. My requirement is to update the listbox only when the user hit the save button but not on every key press on dialog box. I first fill the generic list with the linq to sql classes then bind the listbox with it. Please let me know what i have to do. Thanks in advance

• Collection is empty when it arrives on the client

  One of my entities has an EntitySet< property with [Composition], [Include] and [Association] attributes. I populate this collection in my domain service but when I check its contents when it is received on the client, the collection is empty. I am using Silverlight 4 RTM as well as RIA Services 1.0 RTM. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? • Troubles Iterating Over A HashMap with JSF, MyFaces & Facelets

  Hi all, I'm having some trouble looping over a HashMap to print out it's values to the screen. Could someone double check my code to see what I'm doing wrong. I can't seem to find anything wrong but there must be something. In a servlet, I am adding the following to the request: Map<String, String> facetValues = new HashMap<String, String>(); // Filling the map req.setAttribute(facetField.getName(), facetValues); In one case "facetField.getName()" evaluates to "discipline". So in my page I have the following: <ui:repeat value="${requestScope.discipline}" var="item"> <li>Item: <c:out value="${item}"/>, Key: <c:out value="${item.key}"/>, Value: <c:out value="${item.item}"/></li> </ui:repeat> The loop is ran once but all the outputs are blank?!? I would have at least expected something in item if it's gone over the loop once. Checking the debug popup for Facelets, discipline is there and on the loop. Printing it to the screen results in something that looks like a map to me (I've shortened the output) : {300=0, 1600=0, 200=0, ... , 2200=0} I've also tried with a c:forEach but I'm getting the same results. So does anyone have any ideas where I'm going wrong? Thanks for any input, Lee

• Stuck on preserving config file in WIX major upgrade!

  ARGH! Wix is driving me crazy. So, of course I have seen the many posts both here on stackoverflow and elsewhere about WiX and major upgrades. I inherited this software project using WiX and am releasing a new version. I need this new version to leave ONLY the one configuration file if it's present, and replace everything else. This installer works EXCEPT no matter what I have done so far, the new XML file replaces the old on every install. Even attempting to use NeverOverwrite="yes" and even trying and messing back and forth with OnlyDetect="no"! I am simply stuck and humbly request a little guidance. • WPF - expander Collapsed event being triggered by child controls with validation

  I have an expander that contains an ItemsControl. The items in the itemsControl are templated, some have textboxes in them, others have checkboxes. Both have bindings that cause validation. The styling and validation is working as expected. The problem is when I first expand the expander and cause a change to either control, the expander collapses again, this is not what I want. If I repeat this a second time this does not happen. I'm not sure what is triggering this strange behaviour. I've tried setting the focus to the itemsControl when the expander expands with no luck. What is differnt the second time it's expanded? Could it be the validation? Any Ideas? • Access and modify attributes/objects which are not part of the form backing bean

  I use Spring MVC (via Spring Roo) to build a small web application for administering persons. In the page for creating a person the bean Person is used as form backing object (key "person" in the model map). <form:form action="${form_url}" method="POST" modelAttribute="person"> I would like to add some attributes to the model map which can be altered by the user in the creation form. Basically, I try to add a Boolean, so that I can control which page is displayed next after the user presses the submit button. I try to modify the Boolean (key "myBoolean" in the model map) using a simple checkbox: <form:checkbox id="_myboolean_id" path="myBoolean"/> However, as I am new to Spring MVC I have some difficulties here. The Boolean object is not an attribute of the form backing object. So if I try to access it the following exception is thrown (of course): Invalid property 'myBoolean' of bean class [de.cm.model.Person]: Bean property 'myBoolean' is not readable or has an invalid getter method: Does the return type of the getter match the parameter type of the setter? Is there are way to access a value of the model map directly? The only solution I can imagine right now is a kind of wrapper object around the class Person and my additional attributes which is used as a new form backing object. However, this is more work for a IMHO simple task. Do you have a better solution?

• Alternative to array_shift function

  Ok, I need keys to be preserved within this array and I just want to shift the 1st element from this array. Actually I know that the first key of this array will always be 1 when I do this: // Sort it by 1st group and 1st layout. ksort($disabled_sections); foreach($disabled_sections as &$grouplayout) ksort($grouplayout); Basically I'd rather not have to ksort it in order to grab this array where the key = 1. And, honestly, I'm not a big fan of array_shift, it just takes to long IMO. Is there another way. Perhaps a way to extract the entire array where $disabled_sections[1] is found without having to do a foreach and sorting it, and array_shift. I just wanna add $disabled[1] to a different array and remove it from this array altogether. While keeping both arrays keys structured the way they are. Technically, it would even be fine to do this: $array = array(); $array = $disabled_sections[1]; But it needs to remove it from $disabled_sections. Can I use something like this approach... $array = array(); $array = $disabled_sections[1]; $disabled_sections -= $disabled_sections[1]; Is something like the above even possible?? Thanks.

  I get a blue screen of death in my windows 98 machine every time I boot it. I can't reach to my desktop.
