• Explorer constantly hanging

  So I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) an AMD 8150 on an Asus Crosshair V motherboard with all the latest and greatest patches, and I am experiencing frequent Explorer freezes. • IP Masquerade and forwarding

  Hi all , i got a dedicated server running ubuntu server 10.10 with 3 ip adresses on the same eth card ( example: eth0 192.168.0.1 , eth0:0 188.78.45.0 , eth0:1 ... ) with a 3 virtual machines running ( virtualization technologi used is lxc but i don't think this matters too much ) . Now i need to redirect all ports opened ( using ufw to close/open ports ) from the ip 188.78.54.0 ( eth0:0 ) to a virtual machine ip ( let's say for example 192.168.2.3 ) , all requests made by a virtual machine should be redirected back to the virtual machine that made the request ( in this example 192.168.2.3 ) . Lets say the second vm has the ip 192.168.2.4 now i need to redirect all opened ports to from eth0:1 to this ip and viceversa . And so on and so on , what are the iptables/ufw rules to get this done ? and where to save them ( witch config file ) so they stay the same after reboot . In a few words redirect all requests comming from/to eth0:0 to a certan ip , all requests comming from/to eth0:1 to another ip ... Remember i'm saying all ports opened becouse they might be dynamicly changed . p.s. please excuse my bad english

• Is it possible to map static IP to computer name instead of MAC address?

  I have a number of computers with different hostnames connected to the network. They currently hold a static IP address based on their MAC address. In other words, the static IP address is mapped to their MAC address. This gives rise to a problem and that's when we swap the harddrive from one computer to another, the MAC address becomes different and the application we are running on the harddrive has problem getting the right static IP for it to work. We can't configure the IP address in the application all the time. And changing the static IP addresses to re-map to the computer's new MAC address can be quite a pain. Since all the computers have a unique computer name as their hostname, is it possible to configure such that when these computers grab IP addresses from the DHCP server, DHCP will learn about their hostname and assign the correct IP address? This is to say, the static IP is mapped to the computers' hostname instead of their MAC address. All the computers are running on Windows 7. Would this be possible? If so how should I go about do this?

• I need to take the first three letters of a filename and set it into a text file, in a certain fashion. How can I do this?

  Okay, so I need to take the first three letters of a file from a list of files, and place this into a text file in a certain manner. I will provide examples below. Lets say that I have two file names in the same directory, one called cougar.txt and the other bear.txt. These are in the animals directory. I need to take the first three letters of these words, and transpose them into a text file along with the directory, in the following format: BEA = "animals/bear.txt" COU = "animals/cougar.txt" This should happen with any random thing that might be in the list. I'm fairly new to this sort of coding, so I'm not quite sure which language to use, and I'm learning as I go. This new challenge seems fairly daunting to me, and I would be much appreciated if you guys could help. Also, I'm using Windows 7. Been attempting at this all day, to no avail. Preferably done in batch, but if that is impossible I'm open to recommendations.

• Must have local user to authenticate Samba to AD?

  I've got a CentOS 5.3 server with Samba running. I've joined this server to my domain in the hopes of allowing AD users some access to my Samba shares. I've found that this works, but only as long as the AD username that I'm trying to authenticate with is also a local user on the server. In other words, if I'm trying to access a share, and try to authenticate with the AD username "joe", I get errors unless I create a user named 'joe' on the server. I don't have to create a matching password or anything....the local user's password is always blank, so I do know that the authentication is actually happening against the AD. Here's my smb.conf file: [global] workgroup = <mydomain> server string = <snip> netbios name = HOME security = ADS realm = <mydomain.com> password server = <snip> auth methods = winbind log level = 1 log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log [amore] path = /var/www/amore browseable = yes writable = yes valid users = DOMAIN\user1 DOMAIN\user2 DOMAIN\user3 DOMAIN\user4 I would assume that my kerberos settings are fine, as I've joined the domain and can use wbinfo to see users and groups. However, I can provide that info if necessary. Anyone have any ideas?

• wireless to wired internet

  My wife uses an old computer which doesn't really like having an internet connection via a USB wireless adapter. I've tried several, and none have been satisfactory. The connection gets dropped often and it is frustrating for her. A wireless card also had the same trouble. Repositioning the computer made no difference. (Two laptops, nearby, connect just fine and stay up, so it isn't the router.) However, the computer always worked well when I had an Ethernet cable connected to it. I know there is a box which will connect to my wireless network and provide an Ethernet cable connection. But the terminology used is so complex, I can't tell what it is I really need. In case that wasn't clear, here it is in different words: What I need is just the opposite of a wireless router. My wireless router takes my cable modem's Ethernet connection and makes it available to wireless clients. What I want is a box which is a wireless client to my wireless router and provides an Ethernet cable connection that I can connect to any device. I need to know the right name for a box with such capabilities. If you know of some inexpensive examples, that would also be helpful. I'm running a wireless G network with a Linksys Router.

• ASA access lists and Egress Filtering

  Hello. I'm trying to learn how to use a cisco ASA firewall, and I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm trying to set up some egress filtering, with the goal of allowing only the minimal amount of traffic out of the network, even if it originated from within the inside interface. In other words, I'm trying to set up dmz_in and inside_in ACLs as if the inside interface is not too trustworthy. I haven't fully grasped all the concepts yet, so I have a few issues. Assume that we're working with three interfaces: inside, outside, and DMZ. Let's say I have a server (X.Y.Z.1) that has to respond to PING, HTTP, SSH, FTP, MySQL, and SMTP. My ACL looks something like this: access-list outside_in extended permit icmp any host X.Y.Z.1 echo-reply access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq www access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq ssh access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq ftp access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq ftp-data established access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq 3306 access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq smtp and I apply it like this: access-group outside_in in interface outside My question is, what can I do for egress filtering? I want to only allow the minimal amount of traffic out. Do I just "reverse" the rules (i.e. the smtp rule becomes access-list inside_out extended permit tcp host X.Y.Z.1 any eq smtp ) and call it a day, or can I further cull my options? What can I safely block? Furthermore, when doing egress filtering, is it enough to apply "inverted" rules to the outside interface, or should I also look into making dmz_in and inside_in acls? I've heard the term "egress filtering" thrown around a lot, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Any pointers towards good resources and reading would also be helpful, most of the ones I've found presume that I know a lot more than I do.

• Running Solr on VPS problem

  I have a VPS with Ubuntu OS. I run solr om my local machine (windows xp laptop) just fine. I have configured Jetty, and Solr just the same way as on my computer, but on the server. I have also downloaded the JRE and installed it on the server. However, whenever I try to run the start.jar file, the PuTTY terminal shows a bunch of text but gets stuck. I could pase the text here but it is very long, so unless somebody wants to see it I wont. Also, I cant view the solr admin page at all. Does anybody have experience in this kind of problem? Maybe java isn't correctly installed? It is a VPS so maybe installation is different. • VPN with VLANs? [closed]

  As usual, I'm sure I'm in way over my head on this one. My networking skills are limited; so, bear with me if you will. What I have are a few testing servers at my house as well as at a friends house that I want to link together so they can see each other (VPN right? I've done those before). We want to be able to see all the servers and work with them from either location. All the servers also need to be able to see each other. But, we don't want to see each others PCs, printers, PS3s etc. How do we pull that trick off? Multiple VLAN?... subnets?... what? If hardware matters, I have an old PC I was planning on loading pfSense onto because my current el-cheapo router doesn't support VPN. The VPN linking the houses is about the only thing I'm sure on. Beyond that, I'm lost. I'm not a complete noob; but, like I said, I'm not so sharp with the more complex networking. I do however read well... So use lots of descriptive words and feel free to link away to long dry articles if necessary. :-)

• Backing up 80G hard drive 1G per day

  I want to securely backup my 80G HD, but doing a complete backup takes forever and slows down my machine, so I want to backup just 1G per day. Details: % First hurdle: on the first day, I want to backup the "first" 1G of the hard drive. Of course, there really is no "first" 1G on a hard drive. % After 80 days, I'll have my whole HD backed up... assuming none of my files ever change, which of course they do. So the backup plan/program must also catch file creation/changes as they come along. % The backups must be consistent, in that I can restore my system by restoring the backups sequentially. In other words, "dd if=/harddrive" probably won't work. % The backups should encrypt file contents AND names, but I don't see this as a major hurdle. % Once the backup has backed up everything (even changed files), it can re-backup the first 1G on my hard drive. Even though this backup is redundant, that's OK, because I always want to be backing up something (eg, if I'm backing up to optical media, the older media might start going corrupt). Is there a magic backup plan/program that does this? In reality, I want to do this for multiple machines with multiple drives each, but think that solving the above will solve the general case.

• Lost user account for Windows Vista

  Hello, I'm trying to help a friend who's lost her user account in Vista. I know there's supposed to be a way you can boot the computer from the vista installation disc and create an admin account you can later login with, but her installation disc is in Australia and her laptop in London. Is there any other way to get in? Or would it be better to try and access just the harddrive? She's mainly concerned with getting all her data off it. As for how she lost the account, I'll let her explain in her words. :) My computer basically got some virus and now is up sh*t creek. it told me i had this cryptic thingy majiggy was missing and then this fake virus told me i needed to scan my computer. SO i tried to do malware thing but it kept shutting my computer down. ANYWAY...now its it will only open up with 'launch startup repair' and has got rid of my settings for logging in and wants me to be 'other user' which i have no password or username for'...so basically im stuffed. • Relevance and Necessity of SNMP

  Edit: I am in the process of designing a Java-based monitoring tool that will send back periodic "health checks" of a Java app deployed to a cluster of GlassFish servers. I am trying to figure out the best protocol for this monitoring tool to send information back to the monitoring server on. After an initial research effort on my part, it seems like SNMP is just a protocol for monitor-type applications to communicate the "health status" of something (a part of a network, a server, a cluster, an application, etc.) to the rest of the network. If the above is incorrect, please correct me!!! Assuming the generalization is more or less accurate, my next question is: why is this a protocol!?!? In the age of REST/SOAP/TCP protocols, why is there the need for a standardized protocol that only fits one type of application (monitoring)? In other words, if I'm a developer assigned to building a new monitoring tool that periodically polls a server and reports on its CPU and available memory, what advantages does SNMP give me over just POSTing to a RESTful API via plain 'ole HTTP? I'm sure I'm missing something here - I just need someone to help connect the dots! Thanks in advance!

• Cannot Add Particular Word to Dictionary

  I am trying to add a particular word to my custom dictionary using Word 2007. (The word happens to be "deserialized".) When I right-click on the word and click Add to Dictionary, the red underline does not go away. When I use the Spelling & Grammar tool from the Review tab on the ribbon, it will stop on that word; clicking the Add to Dictionary button has no effect. Oddly, I am able to add other words to the custom dictionary without a problem. I recently added "deserializes", for instance. I have only encountered this problem with that one particular word. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how I might fix it? Clarifications My document and all its content is set to English (United States). My custom dictionary is set to apply to All Languages, which is the default value. "Serialize" is in the US English default dictionary, but "deserialize" and its various forms is not.

• Suggestions for transitioning to new GW/private network

  I am replacing a private T1 link with a new firewall device with an ipsec tunnel for a branch office. I am trying to figure out the right way to transition folks at the new site over to the new connection, so that they default to using the much faster tunnel. Existing network: 192.168.254.0/24, gw 192.168.254.253 (Cisco router plugged in to private t1) Test network I have been using with ipsec tunnel: 192.168.1.0/24, gw 192.168.1.1 (pfsense fw plugged in to public internet), also plugged in to same switch as the old network. There are probably ~20-30 network devices in the existing subnet, about 5 with static IPs. The remote endpoint is already the firewall--I can't set up redundant links to the existing subnet. In other words, as soon as I change the tunnel configuration to point to 192.168.254.0/24, all devices in the existing subnet will stop working because they point to the wrong gateway. I'd like some ability to do this slowly--such that I can move over a few clients and verify the stability of the new link before moving critical services or less tolerant users over. What's the right way to do this? Change the netmask on all of the devices to /16, and update gateway to point to the new device? Could this cause any problems? Also, how should I handle DNS? The pfsense box is not aware of my Active Directory environment. But if I change DNS to use the local servers, it will result in a huge slowdown as DNS queries will still be routed over the private t1. I need some help coming up with a plan that's not too disruptive but will really let me thoroughly test the stability of the IPSEC tunnel before I make the final switch. The AD version is 2008R2, as are the servers. Workstations are mostly Windows XP SP3. I have not configured the 192.168.1.0/24 as a site in AD sites and services.

• Is there such a thing as a file hosted container which deduplicates data held within?

  Background I have backups of a website which stores all of it's data into a single file. This file is several gigs large and I have many different backups of this file. Most of the data within is mostly the same plus whatever was added or changed to it. I want to keep all the concurrent backups I've made through the years in case I find a horrible surprise of data corruption along the line. However storing a 10gig file every month gets expensive. Seeking Solution I've often thought about different ways of alleviating this problem. One thought that comes up very often combines the idea of a duplicating file system which doesn't require it's own partitioned volume on a hard drive. Something like what truecrypt does, what it calls, "file hosted containers" which when using the truecrypt program allows you to mount and dismount that volume as a regular hard drive. Question Is there a virtual hard drive mounter which uses file-based container which uses data deduplicaiton file system? (This question is a little awkward to put into words, if you have a better idea on how to ask this question please feel free to help out.)

• Using a second Wifi Router (in order to use a LAN port)

  Problem: Connecting a TV decoder via Internet. It doesn't have inbuilt wifi so wired LAN is the only option. I bought a second Wifi Router so I could use its LAN port to create a wired internet connection to my decoder. What I want to achieve: The second Wifi Router should basically pick up the signal from the main wifi router. I would then use the LAN port to connect (with a wire) to the TV decoder. In other words have my secondary Wifi Router act as an access point, which will enable me to use a wired LAN connection to the decoder. What i've done so far: Connected the second Wifi Router to my laptop via the LAN ports. Access 192.168.1.1 and went into my second router. 1) SSID set to the same one as the main Wifi Router 2) Tried disabling DHCP and enabling DHCP (with the DNS and default gateway configured the same as the main router). When I check my network connections, I see the LAN connection too but it says 'Not connected to the internet' while the Wifi (main router) shows connected. Can someone please advise on how to use my second Wifi Router to connect to the main Wifi Router (and thus the Internet). Thanks. main wifi router: Zyxel secondary wifi router: TP Link

• Using Plesk for webhosting on Ubuntu - Security risk or reasonably safe?

  Sorry for this newb-question I'm pretty clueless about Plesk, only have limited debian (without Plesk) experience. If the question is too dumb just telling me how to ask a smarter one or what kind of info I should read first to improve the question would be appreciated as well. I want to offer a program for download on my website hosted on an Ubuntu 8.04.4 VPS using Plesk 9.3.0 for web-hosting. I have limited the ssh-access to the server via key only. When setting up the webhosting with Plesk it created an FTP-login & user is that a potential security risk that could bypass the key-only access? I think Plesk itself (even without the ftp-user-account) through it's web-interface could be a risk is that correct or are my concerns exaggerated? Would you say this solution makes a difference if I'm just using it for the next two weeks and then change servers to a system where I know more about security. 3.In other words is one less likely to get hacked within the first two weeks of having a new site up and running than in week 14&15? (due to occurring in less search results in the beginning perhaps, or for whatever reason... )

• How does the internet protocol handle network card numbers?

  I know that data packets sent over the internet carry the source and destination IP address, so that the protocol can route the data to the correct destination and keep track of the source address of the packet. But what about the network card address? As far as I know, each network card has a unique identification number. Is this also transmitted with a TCP/IP packet? And when a packet is received at its destination, how is the IP address mapped to a network card number? In other words. On the sender part: does the sender store the sender network card number in the IP packets that it is sending? On the receiver part: which component maps the IP address to the receiver's network card number when a packet is received? E.g., in a home network, does the modem / router map the destination IP address of an incoming packet to a network card number and deliver the packet directly to that network card? A link to documentation on these topics would be of great help.

• SSL and regular VHost on the same server [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to stop HTTPS requests for non-ssl-enabled virtual hosts from going to the first ssl-enabled virtualhost (Apache-SNI) 1 answer I have a server running Apache 2.4 on which run several virtual hosts. The problem I noticed is that if I try to access let's say https://example.com that have no SSL setuped, apache will automatically try to access the first VHost that has SSL activated (which is litteraly not the same site). How can we prevent this strange behaviour, or in other words, how to say to Apache to ignore SSL for a given site.   Like most technical folks, I suppose, I'm my family's primary source of tech support. I'm a developer--not a sysadmin--by trade and tonight I bumped into something I've never seen before. I'm hoping someone here has. In order to better help my Mom, I have her set up on a home network behind a Linksys router (WRT54G). She's got a Mac, so I have her router set up to forward SSH requests to her laptop's internal IP. I also have her router running DDNS through DynDns. Tonight she called to tell me that she can't access the Internet. Assuming it was one of the many simple, stupid problems most of us encounter with parents, I logged into the router admin remotely and took a look around. Everything looked normal. Then I SSH'd into her machine to check out her IP, DNS, etc. settings. Everything still looked fine. Then I noticed something weird. When SSH'd into her machine, I can't ping her router. In other words, I seem to be able to access her computer through her router, but not access her router from her computer. A traceroute dies immediately as well. Any ideas what I might try next? I've bounced her computer and even unplugged her router (it was plugged back in, of course). Thanks.

• Do email providers have to tell me which (inter)national agencies/institutes are requesting legal access to my account data?

  I know this question is not technical, but i did not find the "stackoverflow for legal issues" and I guess all you super users out there might know the answer. Here is my (potential) problem: I have a free email account at a (inter)national email provider. I used the words "wikileaks" and "twitter" lately in my email. Some over-ambitious national security organization legally requests access to all accounts that behaved similarly. Q1: Can I request the who-, when-, and why-information related to this legal request from my provider? Does he have to tell me which (inter)national organizations (legally) requested my account data? Q2: Does the situation change if I live in Germany (and have a German provider)? I guess here are some German users. And I know that such a legal policy exists for our national credit rating agency. I can request who got access to my data, they have to tell me. Please answer only if you know a good answer, I don't want to start a long discussion on this none-technical question. • Implementing History Support using jQuery for AJAX websites built on asp.net AJAX

  Problem Statement: Most modern day website use AJAX for page navigation and gone are the days of complete HTTP redirection so it is imperative that we support back and forward buttons on the browser so that end users navigation is not broken. In this article we discuss about solutions which are already available and problems with them. Microsoft History Support: Post .Net 3.5 sp1 Microsoft’s Script manager supports history for websites using Update panels. This is achieved by enabling the ENABLE HISTORY property for the script manager and then the event “Page_Browser_Navigate” needs to be handled. So whenever the browser buttons are clicked the event is fired and the application can write code to do the navigation. The following articles provide good tutorials on how to do that http://www.asp.net/aspnet-in-net-35-sp1/videos/introduction-to-aspnet-ajax-history http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/ajaxhistorymanagement.aspx And Microsoft api internally creates an IFrame and changes the bookmark of the url. Unfortunately this has a bug and it does not work in Ie6 and 7 which are the major browsers but it works in ie8 and Firefox. And Microsoft has apparently fixed this bug in .Net 4.0. Following is the blog http://weblogs.asp.net/joshclose/archive/2008/11/11/asp-net-ajax-addhistorypoint-bug.aspx For solutions which are still running on .net 3.5 sp1 there is no solution which Microsoft offers so there is  are two way to solve this o   Disable the back button. o   Develop custom solution.   Disable back button Even though this might look like a very simple thing to do there are issues around doing this  because there is no event which can be manipulated from the javascript. The browser does not provide an api to do this. So most of the technical solution on internet offer work arounds like doing a history.forward(1) so that even if the user clicks a back button the destination page redirects the user to the original page. This is not a good customer experience and does not work for asp.net website where there are different views in the same page. There are other ways around detecting the window unload events and writing code there. So there are 2 events onbeforeUnload and onUnload and we can write code to show a confirmation message to the user. If we write code in onUnLoad then we can only show a message but it is too late to stop the navigation. And if we write on onBeforeUnLoad we can stop the navigation if the user clicks cancel but this event would be triggered for all AJAX calls and hyperlinks where the href is anything other than #. We can do this but the website has to be checked properly to ensure there are no links where href is not # otherwise the user would see a popup message saying “you are leaving the website”. Believe me after doing a lot of research on the back button disable I found it easier to support it rather than disabling the button. So I am going to discuss a solution which work  using jQuery with some tweaking. Custom Solution JQuery already provides an api to manage the history of a AJAX website - http://plugins.jquery.com/project/history We need to integrate this with Microsoft Page request manager so that both of them work in tandem. In our test page we have the link button  which has the attribute rel set to history. <asp:LinkButton ID="Previous" rel="history" runat="server" onclick="PreviousOnClick">Previous</asp:LinkButton> <asp:LinkButton ID="AsyncPostBack" rel="history" runat="server" onclick="NextOnClick">Next</asp:LinkButton> <asp:LinkButton ID="HistoryLinkButton" runat="server" style="display:none" onclick="HistoryOnClick"></asp:LinkButton>   And you can see that there is an hidden HistoryLinkButton which used to send a sever side postback in case of browser back or previous buttons. And note that we need to use display:none and not visible= false because asp.net AJAX would disallow any post backs if visible=false.
