  I'm managing Linux servers for my team. For each new instance, I install the following softwares: etckeeper which keeps tracks of every changes in /etc shorewall to have a simple setup for firewall rsnapshot which keep incremental backup of important directories cron-apt: which take charge of update of the system (or, in my case, send me an email to warn me about new updates) But I was wondering if you administrators have any other wonderful tools for daily management. I'm not talking about remote management (like cfengine) but little tools which help to manage a small number of Linux servers.

• Will Intel be releasing anymore 6-core processors soon?

  I am about to start buying parts every week for as long as it takes me to build the best PC I can build. I am looking at the Intel i7-920 processor right now because it is about 250$ and it is a quad-core processor based on the x58 chipset I believe. From what I have read so far, intel is coming out with some 6-core processors soon that will also use the x58 chipset and will allow me to use the same motherboard and memory/ram to upgrade to a 6-core. This sounds really good to me right now. I just read that the new 6-core processor. The Core i7-980X (extreme edition) was just released which is the first 6-core processor but it is supposed to be around $1,000 so I will probably just get the i7-920 for now and then upgrade to the 6-core version when the price goes down. The motherboard I am looking at getting the GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5 which is around $280 at newegg.com So that is my basic plan SO far. I have not purchased any parts yet. I am just wanting to ask if this sounds like a good idea or if I should wait longer if I am wanting to eventually have a 6-core processor. Does anyone know if Intel is planning on releasing any other 6-core processor in addition to the Core i7-980X in the near future? I just want to make sure I am buying the best setup for my money if I am going all out on it, thanks for any tips/advice.

• 2008 Sever Randomly reboots.

  I'm out of ideas here. We have a 2008 Server that keeps rebooting 2-3 times a day at completely random times with an "Unexpected Shutdown" event. There are no Dumps, no events leading to it just like it loses power then comes back online. I ran a Diagnostic of the power supply and it has had continuous power for months. In addition, the temperature of the processors are maxing out at 40 degrees Celsius. Anyone have any ideas how to figure out why this is restarting all the time? This is a DMZed Web server so it doesn't do too much process wise. I would like to give them solid reason behind the statement that snapshots are performance killers. Can any one explain a little bit theory behind why actually snapshots are affecting the performance? Is it just because Disk I/O rate of hard disk would be slow?

• small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

  We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

Line 2 was output from database query select sysdate from dual; Line 3 was output from java code new Date() I have checked from shell date command that line 2 output conforms with OS time. The output of line 3 was mysterious. I don't know how it comes from Java VM. • Distributed File Systems.

  So, I've been reading several articles around ServerFault as well as google. (For Example, this link) My Requirements are very similar to the link above, however i'd like to also have dynamic or at least resizeable file volumes, so if necessary i can add 4-5 servers to the pool, and then expand the volume. Any Distributed File systems that support that, to save me some time? Thanks! LustreFS will be my next test cluster to build. GlusterFS I've build a 3-machine test GlusterFS cluster, However i quickly became aware of several of its limitations that it doesn't seem to make clearly public. One, i can't seem to resize a volume. Once a volume is created, its done. Which seems retarded, why have a fully scalable file system if i can't scale a volume? So maybe i'm doing something wrong. I'm not sure. AmazonS3 while gives the cheapest startup adds too much cost when broken down to per client per month, so its out. Building my own system when prorated over several years with no bandwidth costs makes it significantly cheaper. MogileFS isn't an option as we'd like this server to be a SAN-Replacement, for storing tons of media from a multitude of systems, which for us means it needs to be POSIX compliant so it can be remotely mounted via NFS or CIFS.

• Understanding Exchange User Monitor (ExMon) Output

  I recently downloaded and ran ExMon while trying to troubleshoot Outlook connectivity problems due to high CPU usage on Exchange Server 2010 SP2 UR8. The tool provides a great set of data, but I have not yet figured out how to make great use of it. My first question is why the Exchange Server itself shows up as a high-use MAPI client in the ExMon data. Among the users' client versions I see build numbers listed for Outlook 2013, 2010, and yes, even 2007 clients. I also see build number 14.2.387.0, which represents Exchange Server 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 8 (+/- some other patch that makes it not quite match the UR8 number). There are many user rows that list only "::1" and/or the short hostname of my Exchange server in the 'Client IP Addresses' column. Some other columns include the end-user's actual IP address and the Exchange server's IP address. ExMon shows that it is actually Exchange Server that is utilizing the highest percentage of CPU that is used for MAPI calls. I had expected to see 1 IP address and version number for each user reported by ExMon. Instead, most records show multiple version #'s (Exchange ver and Outlook ver) and multiple IPs (Exchange IP and client IP). Can anyone explain the reason for this to me, please?

• Building a PC for Work and play? [closed]

  Ok, Its been a long time since I build my own PC so I'm looking to get back into it again and build a new one. First off budget is about €800 excluding the monitor and windows 7 licence and mouse. (just bought a new g500) I plan on using my computer for work, lots of applications open at once but none particularly excessive (photoshop being the most demanding, mostly coding tools) I also use it for some gaming, e.g. COD, Starcraft etc. One thing I do want to do eventually is get a really good monitor with hight resolution and maybe 27" so the graphics card needs to be able to make best use of that. So a few questions 1) Is the bottle neck in performance mostly still the harddrives? 2) Aren't most processors e.g. i5 etc even i3 so far a head of other bottlenecks it makes litte difference the higher you go. Isn't the Graphics card dealing with heavy graphics so what really slows because of a slow CPU? So from this my thinking is to get a SSD drive as my primary drive for OS etc and have loads of memory e.g. 6-8GB and a decent mid level graphics card? It doesn't seem at my level worth spending much on CPU and any other parts really. I basic parts off the top of my head Case, Motherboard CPU SSD Drive SATA Drive Power Supply Memory Cooling (fan?) Graphics Card Network Card Keyboard DVD drive Mouse Windows Monitor Am I missing anything? Any helpful tips or general education much appreciated. Thanks, Derek

It seems to sign okay, but then when I check the signature it seems to be missing the key I just used to sign it.   Our company has a central NIS configuration that we are using to access our teams servers (Redhat)... The current configuration allows all valid NIS authenticated users to connect to our servers. We cannot update or change something on the NIS Master Server... so... Is there a way to use netgroups or some other configuration to allow our team members to authenticate using the NIS server but still restrict access to all other users? Thanks!

• Windows 7 taskbar groups to use vertical menus only, not thumbnails?

  I frequently have 10 or more windows of the same application (e.g. Outlook, Word, IE, etc.) open at one time. Windows 7's new taskbar grouping thumbnail feature shows a preview of open windows (aka thumbnails) when you single-click on the taskbar group for that application. But when I have over 10 windows open (more thumbnails than will fit horizontally on my screen), Windows reverts to a vertical menu. This is disconcerting since I need to train myself to deal with two separate behaviors and can never anticipate what I'm going to see when I click on a taskbar group. Furthermore, I find the thumbnails more difficult to visually scan through (vs. the vertical menu) because only 1-2 words of each window's title are shown. Typically that's not enough text to disambiguate and help me find the right window. I'd like to force Windows 7's taskbar grouping to always show a vertical menu (like in XP) instead of sometimes showing thumbnail previews and sometimes showing a vertical menu. Anyone know how (whether?) this can be done? UPDATE: BTW, I'm running the RTM version (build 7600) of Windows 7. There are apparently other solutions out there which work on earlier builds, but which don't work on the RTM build.

• Can I use IIS to do ActiveDirectory single-sign-on for another website?

  I'm trying to add Active Directory single-sign-on support to an existing SOAP server. The server can be configured to accept a trusted reverse-proxy and use the X-Remote-User HTTP header for the authenticated user. I want to configure IIS to be the trusted proxy for this service, so that it handles all of the Active Directory authentication for the SOAP server. Basically IIS would have to accept HTTP connections on port X and URL Y, do all the authentication, and then proxy the connection to a different server (most likely the same X and Y). Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of IIS or AD (so I am trying my best to learn enough to build this solution) so please be gentle. I would assume that this is not an uncommon scenario, so is there some easy way to do this? Is this sort of functionality built into IIS or do I need to build some sort of IIS proxy program myself? Is there a better option for getting the authentication done and the X-Remote-User HTTP header set than requiring IIS? • A-2-Z web hosting on Amazon AWS

  All, I am studying web dvp, and one of my classes is project-based. We have to build a functional site that demonstrate our understanding of: HTML, CSS, Javascript, php, MySQL, And potentially Ajax or some other web component. For the project, we can use a local server using WampServer and basically build the site entirely on our laptop. If I have time, I would like to create a real site, and I thought it would be a good way to familiarize myself with Amazon's AWS services. So if I purchase a domain name, can I rely on AWS to host the site from A-to-Z? I understand I can use AWS to host content, the database, and do the background computations, if needed. What else do I need and what are the parts that AWS cannot help me with? Second, is there good documentation for a beginner to navigate AWS and learn how to use it (either on Amazon, or some 3rd party sites, or even a good book, as long as is up to date). The ideal documentation would be a tutorial on creating a web site from a-to-z on AWS, as detailed as possible. As you can guess, I have limited understanding of the IT issues. I have 0 Linux or sysadmin experience, but this is a good opportunity to change that. I hope you can help me. Thank you, JDelage PS: Please keep the answers AWS-specific. We like to, wherever possible, host our dev tools on one central NAS and call to the NAS to access the tools instead of rolling stuff out to each and every desktop. I'm not interested in the NFS support or ActiveState Perl. Really, none of the daemon technology is required here. I'm looking for replacements for the coreutils/binutils stuff you find in Linux (and MKS on Windows): sed, awk, csh, bash, grep, ls, find -- the meat-and-potates command line apps that our build and test scripts are built around. If I limit the install to just the Interix GNU Components (and maybe the Remote Connectivity components) will is run nicely from a shared location? To head off some questions: Yes, I've looked at Cygwin. Unfortunately it's performance in our build and test environment is poor. It runs considerably slower than MKS and it's not a direct drop-in replacement for MKS (thanks to its internal pathing and limitations with commands like 'ps'), so it's a tougher sell. Yes, I'm looking at the MinGW offering in parallel to this.
