• What happens with the Guest OS's on ESXi in the event of a power failure?

  Many small businesses would prefer to let their server drop on power failure than to pay even $100 for a cheap UPS. It's often difficult to convince them of the value of something like that; it's why they like ESXi. It's free, they can save a lot of cash by putting a bunch of linux servers on one machine, and then I get paid. :) If the ESXi server experiences a power outage, it is set to come back on automatically when power is restored. What happens with the guest OS's? Ideally I would like them to all come online again as well, assuming they were on when power was lost, but I see no option for choosing this. I don't want to yank power to the system just to try it out, of course. I'm sure someone knows what happens by default, and perhaps how to make my system to work as I would wish.

  I use "Comic Sans MS" font on my web page. The web page looks OK if I open it under Windows and MAC. But it does not work under Linux. How can I solve this problem? May be I can put the font on my web server? Is this font available for free? Can it slow down my page? Or may be I can replace "Comic Sans MS" by another font which is similar and is available on the 3 operation systems?

• Self-hosted browser-based remote desktop script?

  I need a self-hosted browser based remote desktop script that will connect me from any PC to my work PC. I need to either host this script within my own dedicated hosting or on my work PC. The PC that I need to remote into is always the one PC (Win7) and the IP never changes, and I have access to the Router/Firewall within. I have tried many remote desktop services and applications - LogMeIn, Team Viewer, (Ultra/Tight) VNC, GoToMyPC and iTeleport Connect and even Windows Remote Desktop - and the web services (or ports) are blocked at whatever free wi-fi/hotel/coffee shop I am at. Note that I will need to be able to access this from any PC, so I won't be able to install any applications (or use any portable software) - hence my thinking that it will need to be browser based on a standard (not blocked) port. If I can set up a web based remote desktop application - really a homebrew LogMeIn - then I should solve my problem. What is the best option here?

• Basic networking: Centos Server Router + Ubuntu Client setup.. unable to access outside world from client

  I am trying to set up my Centos Server with two NICs as a router. eth0 is connected to the outside world and eth1 is connected to an Ubuntu client. Here's eth0 on the server: DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet eth1 on the server: DEVICE=eth1 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.0.10 # a free address on my network ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet My server has IPv4 packet forwarding turned on and my iptables only contains: # iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface eth0 -j MASQUERADE # iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth1 -j ACCEPT My Ubuntu client has this in its /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet dhcp gateway 192.168.0.10 but I can't get an Internet connection from the server for my client. I can't even ping my server from the client: $ ping 192.168.0.10 Destination Host Unreachable

• Install GRUB to Ubuntu Partition

  So my computer has the following partitions: /dev/sda -- (I know this isn't a real partition, but more so the boot loader) /dev/sda1 -- (Windows 7 Boot Loader) /dev/sda3 -- (Windows 7) /dev/sda4 -- (Data partition, NTFS) that means i have /dev/sda2 as free space. I do not want to change the MBR of the computer. I would like /dev/sda2 to contain GRUB AND Ubuntu. So ideally when I turn my computer on, BIOS would ask if I'd like to boot Windows 7 or Ubuntu(or Grub or partition 2), and I could choose either one. But I would like Grub and Ubuntu to be on the same partition, so they will not interfere in any way with windows or window's boot loader/partition (sda3) How can I do this? Catch: when formatting partitions, Ubuntu does not give me the option to make them virtual partitions, so that makes things harder. I tried: installing Ubuntu to /dev/sda2 (which I formatted as ext4) and then told the Ubuntu installer to install the bootloader to /dev/sda2. But when I select "Ubuntu" from BIOS's boot selection, it loads a black screen and says "invalid arch independent ELF magic grub rescue _" and allows me to input stuff. How can I fix this, or tell my computer where Grub is?

• CMS for coding blog

  I've got a server with a LAMP stack and such. I'd like to host a blog-type site (or if there's a free place good for this, that would be cool!) that covers a variety of tutorials, interesting content, etc. There are tons of CMS's out there but if you search for tips on ones that do programming type things well, you get tons of hits about web development. I'd like to know if anyone here has recommendations from actually using a CMS for this type of thing or, short of that, can recommend one - not based on generalities like "Joomla! is great!" I'm looking for the least setup time possible. I'm proficient with CSS and I can design a color scheme, so that's not a big problem. As you can expect, attaching files, pictures, and syntax highlighting are musts (C/C++ ish is good). Ability to group posts, perhaps use tags, etc. would be cool too, but not necessary. As I'm writing this, it almost sounds like it'd be easier to custom-code a small PHP site myself.

• Integrated Reporting is Getting Closer

  Oracle recently sponsored a webcast on CFO.com titled:  The CFO Playbook on Integrated Reporting: Integrating Sustainability into Financial Disclosures.  The speakers for this webcast were James Margolis, partner with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), a global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk and sustainability consulting services (EHSS) and Mike Wallace, Director of the Global Reporting Initiative's Focal Point USA. This webcast focused on why top companies in the U.S. and overseas are incorporating sustainability content into their annual reports and other financial disclosures. The speakers discussed the benefits of integrating sustainability reporting with traditional financial reporting. They noted how investors, corporate directors, lenders and most recently, the Securities and Exchange Commission, use this information to better understand, benchmark and value companies. • Book Review&ndash;Getting Started With OAuth 2.0

  Getting Started With OAuth 2.0, by Ryan Boyd, provides an introduction to the latest version of the OAuth protocol. The author starts off by exploring the origins of OAuth, along with its importance, and why developers should care about it. The bulk of this book involves a discussion of the various authorization flows that developers will need to consider when developing applications that will incorporate OAuth to manage user access and authorization. The author explains in detail which flow is appropriate to use based on the application being developed, as well as how to implement each type with step-by-step examples. Note that the examples in the book are focused on the Google and Facebook APIs. Personally, I would have liked to see some examples with the Twitter API as well. In addition to that, the author also discusses security considerations, error handling (what is returned if the access request fails), and access tokens (when are access tokens refreshed, and how access can be revoked). This book provides a good starting point for those developers looking to understand what OAuth is and how they can leverage it within their own applications. The book wraps up with a list of tools and libraries that are available to further assist the developer in exploring the APIs supporting the OAuth specification. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for developers at all levels that have not yet been exposed to OAuth. • How to get a maximum file size of VZFS parition?

  I have a VPS hosting with a VZFS file system. How can I determine maximum file size of VZFS partition? UPD: Free space (or total space) is not what i need. Sometimes file cannot occupy a hole partition volume - fat16 with 2Gb limit is a good example. I need to use a large database file (say, 64Gb) and so I need to know if a file system of VPS hosting will cope with it. It is easy to calculate for an ext3 filesystem using tune2fs, but VPS uses VSFS by Virtuozzo, and it is documented bad. Is it any generic way to calculate maximum file size for some filesystem in linux?

• How do I get the best quality screenshot for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and what tool would

  I'm trying to get some data into a text file from screenshots. Apparently screenshots don't work very well with OCR because they are 75dpi and the minimum for good quality OCR is 150dpi. Does anyone know how what the best way to be taking screenshots for OCR would be? And also, what the best OCR software for doing this would be? Right now I'm getting pretty good results with the free online tools such as new-ocr but it does make mistakes that I have to correct every now and then. So I'd like some tips. UPDATE: I tested out ABBYY screenshot and it was pretty bad... the online tools are better

  I tried to put everything in the title : I'm looking for a software that is able : to work with image (raw file), partition & whole disk, without distinction to copy whole image or only selected part (let's say .. from 0 to end of last partition, excluding free space for example ; or with start + offset/end system) to handle compression (at least gzip) You recognized, I'm looking for a "dd | gzip" utility with GUI on Windows. The closest tool I found so far is http://www.dubaron.com/diskimage/ but it's a bit old and don't have compression support. Any idea ?

  Well I switched back to Sony. After about a year of debating whether or not to keep my XBox 360 or get a PS3 I decided over the weekend to trade in the 360 for a PS3.  I had thought about keeping both but I really don’t need two gaming systems. So far I like it, the graphics are good and the game selection is pretty much the same. For me the game exclusives didn’t sway me one way or the other (i.e. I’ve never played Halo so you can’t miss what you never played). My main reasons for switching were: RROD – I’ve had three and I don’t play a huge amount per week. Free online gaming – I never did buy a Live Gold account even though it is affordable Blu-ray player – Figured this is as good of a time as any to finally get one Netflix streaming with no need for an upgrade to your online account like on XBox MUCH quieter system Finally at a $299 price point All in all the last point was the main one for me. Like a lot of other folks I was really put off by the PS3’s original pricing of $499 and $599. Technorati Tags: Gaming

• Older raid controllers in raid 5 vs. Jbod and SW raid

Im in the fortunate position to have 6 Supermicro older VOD servers with the following config: Supermicro 3U case, 3xPSU Dual Xeon 3ghz P4 class cpu (5 years old.. havnt checked the exact type) 4GB Ram 3ware 9500-8 SATA controller 8 SATA SLOTS and alot of free drives. 2GB FLASH Bootdrive What im curious about is the RAID5 performance on these old beasts in HW mode vs. SW on Linux with the controller set in JBOD mode. Im thinking on using Centos 5.5 or Ubuntu or ZFS RaidZ on Opensolaris. Any tips? or reccomendations ? best regards TEB

• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • Rail's FileStore with Linux Disk Caching or RAMdisk?

  I have a Ruby on Rails application that stores it's catched files on the filesystem (Rails file-system cache). I was thinking about changing to memcached Store, but a short test shows it isn't a big difference in speed. From linuxatemyram.com I learned a bit about file caching. On the current machine there would be around 40..45GB RAM left which isn't needed for the application and which can be used to linux-disk-cache this rails file cache store. The disk is a RAID10 system with almost 120MB disk perfomance. How can I tell Linux to use free RAM more deliberately and not to be shy about using it? Do think it's necessary to adjust a sysyctl/.. value here, or would I have performance advantages to put the File Store root diretory on a ramdisk? (Loosing the cache during a reboot wouldn't be a problem)

• What is a easiest way to implement Mail Server in ubuntu and hook in webmail through XAMPP?

  Hi Everyone, I currently have xampp running on my ubuntu server. I tried a variety of things including installing, postfix+dovecot+roundcube+postfixadmin (postfix+dovecot work I think, postfix admin also works, roundcube works and connects to dovecot but i cant create user accounts, or figure out how that works), citadel (it installed, but I have no idea how to make it work with xampp for webmail) and i tried messing with exim and vexim a bit also. In short I feel like this should be a lot easier, and I can't figure it out haha. XAMPP works fine. I got my server running with everything. I was thinking about mercury mail, but I need a webmail solution also. I was thinking about google apps, but 50 bucks a year per user is a steep change from free. Thanks for the help!

• Partitioning Software for Windows 7

  I used to use Patition Magic Pro from Norton to do disk partitioning. Now that I have Windows 7, I have been warned, by the OS itself and later confirmed on the internet, that Partition Magic Pro has compatibility issues with Windows 7. So, I am asking you which software partitioning software do you recommend. It would be great if it was freeware but I know it is hard to find a good parititioning app that's free, so, if you know a good one that's paid, there's no problem and please mention it in your reply. Thanks in advance. P.S. I am aware of "create and format disk partitions feature" of Windows 7, but that's not enough for me. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bits.

• Internet addicted, need software to control my usage and block access

  I found I have problem to be a little addictive with surfing on internet. I am trying to find a free ware, (or software), that can help me for exemple to be just 2 hours per day on internet. Like it is counting the minutes and than stop working. not just 2 hours in one time, but in whole day.... maybe that it has different modes (2hours together, in whole day, 2hours + little reserve time) but I need something that really take me away access from internet :) Just counting time, is not enough for me :) Hope we will find something because, I just can't avoid not to loose 4 hours on internet. Email forward are today setup manually at my VPS provider which is a pain. I need administer email forwarding via an API so it is done automatically. If I choose to run my own mail server.
