• How do I ensure my C# software can access the internet in a Citrix + ISA environment?

  Hi everyone, A client recently informed us that deployment of our software in their environment has failed due to a proxy error when the software attempts to access the internet. The client has a combination of Citrix and Microsoft's ISA server. The software allows the use of a proxy and the ability to manually enter authentication information, or automatically retrieve the current system proxy settings. The error returned is the standard 407 authentication error, but the client assures us that they have entered the authentication information required. They have also shown us the snippet of the ISA error logs which identify the client as Anonymous and the authentication protocol as Basic. I have a few questions I suppose: How should I go about dealing with the ISA server in my code? I have no real experience with this environment and am assuming that the ISA server is treated like any other proxy. If I am mistaken, what should I be doing? Does ISA allow the administrator to disallow specific authentication protocols - and if this is the case and 'Basic' auth is disallowed, would it still return a 407 error? Could the Citrix environment have caused this issue? Is there any particular way to ensure that my software will work in such an environment? Code-samples would be much appreciated. I have neither a Citrix test server or an ISA server at my disposal to carry out testing on this so I am currently trying to identify possible causes before I make the case for investment in a more robust testing environment. • Why thread in background is not waiting for task to complete?

  I am playing with async await feature of C#. Things work as expected when I use it with UI thread. But when I use it in a non-UI thread it doesn't work as expected. Instead it instantly executes the BgOnRunWorkerCompleted after calling Method. Why is that so? What am I missing here? P.S: I am not interested in alternate ways or correct ways of doing this. I want to know what is actually happening behind the scene in this case? Why is it not waiting?

• Where in maven project's path should I put configuration files that are not considered resources

  I have a simple java maven project. One of my classes when executing needs to load an xml configuration file from the classpath. I dont want to package such xml file when producing the jar but I want to include a default xml file in a zip assemply under a conf subfolder and I also want this default xml to be available in the unit tests to test against it. As I see it there are 2 possible places of this default xml: src/main/resources/conf/default.xml src/main/conf/default.xml Both solutions demand special pom actions: In solution 1, I get the auto copy to target folder during build which means it is available in testing but I also get it in the produced jar which i dont want. In solution 2, I get the jar as I want it(free of the xml) but I manually have to copy the xml to the target folder to be available for testing. (I dont want to add src's subfolders in test classpath. I think it is bad practice). The question is what is the best solution of the two? If the correct is 2, what is the best way to copy it to target folder? Is there any other solution better and more common than those two? (I also read http://stackoverflow.com/questions/465001/where-should-i-put-application-configuration-files-for-a-maven-project but I would like to know the most "correct solution" from the "convention over configuration" point of view and this link provides some configuration type solutions but not any convention oriented. Maybe there isnt one but I ask anyway. Also the solutions provided include AntRun plugin and appAssembler plugin and I wonder if I could do it with out them.)

• Code smells galore. Can this be a good company?

  I am currently doing some contract work for a company. Now they want to hire me for real. I have been reading on SO about code smells lately. The thing is, I have worked with some of their code and it smells. Badly. They use incredibly old versions of MSVC (2003), they do not seem to use version control systems, most code is completely undocumented, variable names with more than three letters are a rarity, there is commented out code all over the place, some methods take huge amounts of arguments, UI design is seemingly done by blind people... Yet they seem to be quite successful with what they do and their actual algorithms seem to be pretty sound and rather sophisticated. Since they mostly do DSP stuff, I am willing to ignore the UI side of things, but really these code smells are worrying. What would you think of a company that doesn't seem to value readable code? The people are nice enough and payment would be good. How much would you value code smells in this context? You see, this is my first job and SO got me worried, so I turn to you for suggestions ;-)

• Stop scrolling to ID when opening jQuery Modal via URL

  I need to be able to open an ID'd jQuery UI Modal on a page when that modal's ID is passed in the page's URL. For example: http://mysite.com/visit.html#directions #directions is an ID'd DIV at the very bottom of the page, right before the closing BODY element. It's instantiated as a jQuery UI dialog on page load, then I'm running a function to check the current URL for the modal's ID. If the URL contains the modal's ID, the modal is opened. Here's what my auto-open function looks like: function autoOpenModal() { if ( document.location.href.indexOf('#') ) { var uriParts = document.location.href.split('#'); var hashID = '#' + uriParts[1]; if ( $(hashID) && $(hashID).hasClass('dialog')) { $(hashID).dialog('open'); } } } The problem I'm having is that the browser is automatically scrolling down to the ID at the very bottom of the page before the modal is opened. So when the user closes the modal they're at the bottom of the page (which seems "broken" to me). Can anyone tell me how I stop the browser from auto-scrolling down to the ID please? I've had a look at event.preventDefault() but without success; I'm not sure where or how to use it in the event chain.

• Achieving Thread-Safety

  Question How can I make sure my application is thread-safe? Are their any common practices, testing methods, things to avoid, things to look for? Background I'm currently developing a server application that performs a number of background tasks in different threads and communicates with clients using Indy (using another bunch of automatically generated threads for the communication). Since the application should be highly availabe, a program crash is a very bad thing and I want to make sure that the application is thread-safe. No matter what, from time to time I discover a piece of code that throws an exception that never occured before and in most cases I realize that it is some kind of synchronization bug, where I forgot to synchronize my objects properly. Hence my question concerning best practices, testing of thread-safety and things like that. mghie: Thanks for the answer! I should perhaps be a little bit more precise. Just to be clear, I know about the principles of multithreading, I use synchronization (monitors) throughout my program and I know how to differentiate threading problems from other implementation problems. But nevertheless, I keep forgetting to add proper synchronization from time to time. Just to give an example, I used the RTL sort function in my code. Looked something like FKeyList.Sort (CompareKeysFunc); Turns out, that I had to synchronize FKeyList while sorting. It just don't came to my mind when initially writing that simple line of code. It's these thins I wanna talk about. What are the places where one easily forgets to add synchronization code? How do YOU make sure that you added sync code in all important places?

• Array: Recursive problem cracked me up

  An array of integers A[i] (i 1) is defined in the following way: an element A[k] ( k 1) is the smallest number greater than A[k-1] such that the sum of its digits is equal to the sum of the digits of the number 4* A[k-1] . You need to write a program that calculates the N th number in this array based on the given first element A[1] . INPUT: In one line of standard input there are two numbers seperated with a single space: A[1] (1 <= A[1] <= 100) and N (1 <= N <= 10000). OUTPUT: The standard output should only contain a single integer A[N] , the Nth number of the defined sequence. Input: 7 4 Output: 79 Explanation: Elements of the array are as follows: 7, 19, 49, 79... and the 4th element is solution. I tried solving this by coding a separate function that for a given number A[k] calculates the sum of it's digits and finds the smallest number greater than A[k-1] as it says in the problem, but with no success. The first testing failed because of a memory limit, the second testing failed because of a time limit, and now i don't have any possible idea how to solve this. One friend suggested recursion, but i don't know how to set that. Anyone who can help me in any way please write, also suggest some ideas about using recursion/DP for solving this problem. Thanks.

• Transitioning from Domain Authentication to SQL Server Authentication

  Greetings all, I've run into a problem that has me stumped. I've put together a database in SQL Server Express, and I'm having a strange permissions problem. The database is on my development machine with a domain user: DOMAIN\albertp. My development database server is set for "SQL Server and Windows Authentication" mode. I can edit and query my database without any problems when I log in using Windows Authentication. However, when I log in to any user that uses SQL Server authentication (Including sa) I get this message when I run queries against my database. SELECT * FROM [Testing].[dbo].[AuditingReport] I get: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1 Login failed for user 'auditor'. I'm logged into the server from SQL Server Management Studio as 'auditor' and I don't see anything in the error log about the login failure. I've already run: Use Testing; Grant All to auditor; Go And I still get the same error. What permissions do I have to set for the database to be usable by others outside of my personal domain login? Or am I looking at the wrong problem? My ultimate goal is to have the database be accessible from a set of PHP pages, using a either a common login (hence 'auditor') or a login specific to a set of individual users.

  Hello, I am using http://loungerepo.codeplex.com/ this library needs a unique id when I persist my entities to the repository. I decided for integer not Guid. The question is now where do I retrieve a new integer and how do I do it? What I do not like about my current apporach: -Having a private method in repositry class because a repositry is to fetch data only not "entity logic" like the counter - Having to access from the ViewModel a public property - located in the repository -, actually its not the ViewModel concern to get a entity id and assign it. Actually the ViewModel should ask for a schoolclass POCO and get a SchoolclassModel to bind to the UI. But then I have again to re-read the Schoolclass properties into the SchoolclassModel properties what I want to avoid.

• IndexOutofRangeException while using WriteLine in nested Parallel.For loops

  I am trying to write kinect depth data to a text file using nested Parallel.For loops with the following code. However, it gives IndexOutofRangeException. The code works perfect if using simple for loops but it hangs the UI since the depth format is set to 640x480 causing the loops to write 307200 lines in the text file at 30fps. Therefore, I switched to Parallel. For scheme. If I omit the writeLine command from the nested loops, the code works fine, which indicates that the IndexOutofRangeException is arising at the writeline command. I do not know how to troubleshoot this. Please advise. Any better workarounds to avoid UI freezing?   Hi, I am unable to create a file under "program files" folder on my Windows 7 64-bit machine in VS 2008 WPF C# code. I can create the folder by hand, but when i try to create the file, I get the similar "Access Denied" exception.

• export a JOGL applet and embedd into a html page

• Web development scheme for staging and production servers using Git Push

  I am using git to manage a dynamic website (PHP + MySQL) and I want to send my files from my localhost to my staging and development servers in the most efficient and hassle-free way. I am currently convinced that the best way for me to approach this problem is to use this git branching model to organize my local git repo. From there, I will use the release branches to push to my staging server for testing. Once I am happy that the release code works on the staging server, I can then merge with my master branch and push that to my production server. Pushing to Staging Server: As noted in many introductory git posts, I could run into problems pushing into a non-bare repo, so, as suggested in this response, I plan to push the release branch to a bare repo on the server and have a post-receive hook that clones the bare repo to a non-bare repo that also acts as the web-hosted directory. Pushing to Production Server: Here's my newest source of confusion... In the response that I cited above, it made me curious as to why @Paul states that it's a completely different story when pushing to a live, development server. I guess I don't see the problem. Would it be safe and hassle-free to follow the same steps as above, but for the master branch? Where are the potential pit-falls? Config Files: With respect to configuration files that are unique to each environment (.htaccess, config.php, etc), it seems simplest to .gitignore each of those files in their respective repos on their respective servers. Can you see anything immediately wrong with this? Better solutions? Accessing Data: Finally, as I initially stated, the site uses MySQL databases to store data. How would you suggest I access that data (for testing purposes) from the staging server and localhost? I realize that I may have asked way too many questions for a single post, but since they're all related to the best way to set up this development scheme, I thought it was necessary.

• Where is the taglib definition of PrimeFaces 4?

  I am looking around how to define custom components in JSF. According to the Java EE tutorial, any custom component needs to be described in a taglib. When I take a look into the PrimeFaces source, I cannot find any taglib file or any hint where the namespace is bound and the available components are defined. I am adding primefaces jar to my dependencies, adding xmlns:p="http://primefaces.org/ui to the xml namespace, defining some primfaces components on my page and it works... Ok, but neither I can find the related taglib in the source or binary package nor my IDE (IntelliJ) is able to find where "xmlns:p="http://primefaces.org/ui" is pointing to. Therefore, code completion is also not possible. (all other mojarra taglibs are found.) Is it possible that PrimeFaces is defining the taglib via annotations directly in Java classes or is it generating it during runtime? I can easily find the UIComponents, primefaces defines in its source, but the configuration of the taglib seems to be missing. I am sure I just don't know how PrimeFaces is doing it, but the javaeetutorial is not describing any other opportunity than defining a ...-taglib.xml

• Silverlight performance with many loaded controls

  I have a SL application with many DataGrids (from Silverlight Toolkit), each on its own view. If several DataGrids are opened, changing between views (TabItems, for example) takes a long time (few seconds) and it freezes the whole application (UI thread). The more DataGrids are loaded, the longer the change takes. These DataGrids that slow the UI chanage might be on other places in the app and not even visible at that moment. But once they are opened (and loaded with data), they slow showing other DataGrids. Note that DataGrids are NOT disposed and then recreated again, they still remain in memory, only their parent control is being hidden and visible again. I have profiled the application. It shows that agcore.dll's SetValue function is the bottleneck. Unfortunately, debug symbols are not available for this Silverlight native library responsible for drawing. The problem is not in the DataGrid control - I tried to replace it with XCeed's grid and the performance when changing views is even worse. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem? Why more opened controls slow down other controls? I have created a sample that shows this issue: http://cenud.cz/PerfTest.zip UPDATE: Using VS11 profiler on the sample provided suggests that the problem could be in MeasureOverride being called many times (for each DataGridCell, I guess). But still, why is it slower as more controls are loaded elsewhere? Is there a way to improve the performance?

  Hello The client that calls this code is restricted and can only deal with return codes from stored procs. So, we modified our usual contract to RETURN -1 on error and default to RETURN 0 if no error If the code hits the inner catch block, then the RETURN code default to -4. Where does this come from, does anyone know...? • Open a dialog box in same window on selectOneMenu change

  I have a jsf page where I have a selectOneMenu and , I want to open a dialog box on selectOneMenu changes. As a example if user selects a value ="passive" from jsf selectOneMenu it should open a dialog box or a light box on same page where I want to display a small jsf form like as here done. http://www.primefaces.org/showcase-labs/ui/dialogLogin.jsf and I also want save that submitted data in my backing bean somewhere so I can store it in to database later. I dont know how to open a dialog box or light box from backing bean in same window,as we will identify value change using valueChangeListener event or by using ajax event.   I get some variation of the following error when our server gets put under any significant load. I've Googled for hours about it and tried everything (including upgrading to the latest versions and clean installs). I've read all the posts about it here on SA, but can't figure it out. A lot of people are having the same problem, but no one seems to have a definitive answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Zend_Session_Exception' with message 'Zend_Session::start() - /var/www/trunk/library/Zend/Cache/Backend/Memcached.php(Line:180): Error #8 Memcache::get() [memcache.get]: Server localhost (tcp 11211) failed with: Failed reading line from stream (0) Array We have a copy of our production environment for testing and everything works great until we start load-testing. I think the biggest object stored is about 170KB, but it will probably be about 500KB when all is said and done (well below the 1MB limit). Just FYI: Memcache gets hit about 10-20 times per page load. Here's the memcached settings: PORT="11211" USER="memcached" MAXCONN="1024" CACHESIZE="64" OPTIONS="" I'm running Memcache 1.4.5 with version 2.2.6 of the PHP-memcache module. • LuaEdit can't find module when Lua files all in the same folder

  I downloaded LuaEdit to use as an IDE and debug tool however I'm having trouble using it for even the simplest things. I've created a solution with 2 files in it, all of which are stored in the same folder. My files are as follows: --startup.lua require("foo") test("Testing", "testing", "one, two, three") --foo.lua foo = {} print("In foo.lua") function test(a,b,c) print(a,b,c) end This works fine when in my C++ compiler when accessed through some embed code, however when I attempt to use the same code in LuaEdit, it crashes on line 3 require("foo") with an error stating: module 'foo' not found: no field package.preload['foo'] no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\lua\foo.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\lua\foo\init.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\foo.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\foo\init.lua' no file '.\foo.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\foo.dll' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\loadall.dll' no file '.\battle.dll' I have also tried creating these files prior to adding them to a solution and still get the same error. Is there some setting I'm missing? It would be great to have an IDE/debugger but it's useless to me if it can't run linked functions.

• Setting left/top position not working in IE

  Hello, In a custom ASP.NET AJAX control, i have this to do some repositioning. var dims = Sys.UI.DomElement.getBounds(control); this.get_element().style.position = "absolute"; //Sys.UI.DomElement.setLocation(this.get_element(), dims.x, (dims.y + dims.height)); this.get_element().style.left = dims.x; this.get_element().style.top = (dims.y + dims.height); getBounds simply returns the x/y and width/height. I use this to set the left/top, but in IE, it's doubling; say the coordinates are 500, 20; when it sets this on the element, its actually setting to 1000, 40. Any ideas why? In firefox, this works correctly. this.get_element() returns the correct element and all, but it's not setting correctly, even though event logging says it's the correct coordinates. When using setLocation too, it doesn't work in either... What else in my code may be affecting it? JQuery isn't an option here too. Thanks.
