• Program to download .torrent file from a Magnet URI?

  I have a Torrent app running on my home server that has an outdated but pretty useful web interface. The one problem is that it doesn't take magnet links, only .torrent files. I'd like to continue using this and not have to bother with finding a different program. Given that magnet links are just a pointer to download the torrent file from the swarm, I'm hoping there's a program out there that will take a magnet link and spit out a .torrent only. I know I could put it into µTorrent and grab the file from the app's directory, but that's a bit roundabout, and I'd like something that will do it semi-unattented. Preferably for OS X, but Linux (or a web app) would work too.

• Postfix tutorial inconsistency

  I'm following this tutorial to setup a Postfix/Dovecot mail server with Postfix Admin as a web front end. As regards directory structure for virtual mail users, the author of the tutorial writes: Virtual mail users are those that do not exist as Unix system users. They thus don't use the standard Unix methods of authentication or mail delivery and don't have home directories. That is how we are managing things here: mail users are defined in the database created by Postfix Admin rather than existing as system users. Mail will be kept in subfolders per domain and account under /var/vmail - e.g. [email protected] will have a mail directory of /var/vmail/example.com/me. • Blank screen after Switch User or Resume

  About half the time when I switch users or resume from standby or resume the screen goes blank (black). If I work the cursor keys I can hear the system bell when it gets to the end of the user list. I can also successfully login, going from memory, but screen stays black. Sometimes closing and re-opening the lid will light up the screen again. Pressing the special Function key to enable/disable external monitor connection has no effect [Fn]-[F5],[Fn]-[F6]. If none of the previous work I need to put the computer into hibernation or full power off to restore screen function. If I watch closely when switching users I think I can see the screen initially start to light up and then quickly fade to black. The computer is an Acer Aspire 3500, model ZL6, running Ubuntu 10.10 installed 2 days ago. No proprietary drivers are in use. I'll provide a list of hardware details as soon as I can figure out how to generate that (didn't there used to be an entry for hardware details under the System menu?). Possibly related questions: No resume after Hibernate or Standby When I resume from suspension - the screen is blank Switch user fails to complete successfully For what it's worth, blank after resume also used to happen occasionally when the laptop was running XP-Home, but nowhere near as often, perhaps 6 or 8 times a year. UPDATE: I found System Administration System Testing and ran the Monitor test. It went very very dark, but the window elements could be discerned, and the whole screen flashed (from very very dark to black). On the third repeat of that same test the screen went to full blaupck and stayed there. Moving the mouse, via touchpad, or touch keys did not wake it up again. I had to close the lid and put the computer into hibernate, and press the power button to restore it. • What to do with a Blowfish Key?

  I just completed backing up 8 years of my Gmail using http://gmvault.org I selected the --encrypt option which uses Blowfish encryption. According to their site: Emails can be encrypted with the option -e --encrypt. With that option, the Blowfish encryption is used to crypt your emails and chats and the first time you activate it, a secret key is randomly generated and stored in $HOME/.gmvault/token.sec. Keep great care of the secret key as if you loose or delete it your stored emails won't be readable anymore !!! I'm using OSX Lion. I'm a software engineer but far from an encryption expert. What should I do with this key? It seems like leaving it where it is now (alongside the emails) sort of misses the point of encrypting them to begin with.

• How To Use AutoFill on a Google Docs Spreadsheet [Quick Tips]

  Have you ever wanted to fill an entire row or column with a series of values? If you’re an Excel user, you can do the same thing in Google Docs. If you haven’t used either, here’s the quick way to do it. Just type in a couple of numbers in sequence… 1 2 3 works pretty well. You could also put them across a row instead of down a column. Then move your mouse over the dot in the corner until the pointer changes, then just drag it downward (or if you are filling a row instead, you can drag it to the right). Let go of the mouse, and your data will be automatically filled in. You could also make it skip by 1 instead, like 2 4 6 8, etc… It all works the same way. Sadly there’s no really advanced options like Excel has, but for most uses, this is good enough. Also, we’re aware this is a very simple tip for most of you, but we’re trying to help the beginners out as well! • VirtualBox - Mac OSX host Win7 guest - no Internet access for guest VM

  I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network. When I ran the VPN software to connect to the work network, the internet access went away again.] (Initially posted this on stackoverflow.com, but it was put on hold as off-topic by several users, and was advised to ask here instead)

  I have a one desktop running windows 7 ultimate connected to Ethernet cable. And I want to share folder to another wifi connected laptop (also windows 7 ultimate). Both machines are on the same home internet connection. I have tried to share folders by going to properties sharing advanced sharing permissions checked all the boxes to allow all but I don’t see any shared files on my laptop. I know it’s possible to share folders between two Wi-Fi connected machines but how can it be done when one pc is cable connected and other is Wi-Fi connected on the same internet connection.

• "Failed to create swap space" error during installation

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu for the past two days or so, but I've been running into a problem: every time I run the installation program on the LiveCD, I always get the same (or a very similar) error: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #3 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." So far, I've run DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) on my HDD once, to make absolutely sure that everything on it had been erased. Then, I simply put in the LiveCD, and let it run the automated install. I get the above error directly after I tell it to automatically partition the HDD (it will work for a second or so, then this will pop up), forcing me back to the screen that lets me choose whether I want to automatically or manually partition the HDD. Well, after failing to install the software manually, I did a little research and learned enough about partitioning Linux to use the 'Manual partitioning' option. I partitioned the HDD as follows (it's a 1TB drive): /home - (the rest)- ext2, / - 20GB - ext2, /boot - 100MB - ext2, /swap - 8GB /EFIboot - 40MB The only difference when I tried this method was that I got THIS message: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #2 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." Basically, the only difference was that there was now a '2' instead of a '3'. If I may ask, what exactly am I doing wrong? I've tried looking around the internet (that's basically all I've done for the last two days), but no one seems to have the same problem that I have, and I've tried most of the solutions for similar problems (DBAN, formatting partitions in ext2 format, etc). The only thing I haven't tried is using the terminal to manually partition the HDD...and I actually DID try to do this, but I wasn't able to get past 'su' 's password demand, so I wasn't able to use the terminal. • Ubuntu - Create a link to a specified directory so I can easily change to that directory

  Is it possible to create a symlink to a directory, like /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar that I can access from everywhere? I want to be able to say cd myapp from anywhere in the directory tree and go to that directory. Is it only possible in the directory where I create the symlink? Do I have to update my ~/.bashrc file to include an alias like: alias myapp="cd /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar" and then just type myapp from anywhere? What is the best way to handle this situation so I don't always have to type in the long directory? I also want to be able to use that parameter in say a copy command, so the alias wouldn't help in that situation. Hopefully I can do something similar where ~ maps to the home directory in any command.

Seemingly random, win 7 disconnects from the "Home Network" says its in a "public network", then resets the connection to an illegal 169 address. I have tried static ips, dhcp, all with the same results. This seems to have started shortly after i installed Vuze, so I uninstalled it but the problem persists. I know that the router is sound given that I have an XP machine attached with no issues of connectivity at all. I am at a complete loss and have tried everything, pleasse tell me i'm not the only one.

• How to install software packages on a shared Red Hat Linux host account without root access or rpm?

  I have a shared RHEL 4 host account where I do not have root privileges. I would like to install Git and Bash Complete in a way that they can be upgraded easily. To date, I've just been installing from source providing $HOME as a prefix to autoconf. Obviously this isn't ideal as I need to hunt down the files associated with the version I'm upgrading away from and delete them. I've tried using rpm but I just get -bash: rpm: command not found back so it's not available. I also looked into checkinstall but it looks like that requires rpm, dpkg, or Slackware's package manager to be available. Is there anything out there that can be used like a package manager without requiring root access or an existing package manager?

• Problems with vim/locale as non-root user on Solaris

  I do some work on a Solaris 10 machine, and my .vimrc is set up to show unicode characters for tabs and line endings: set listchars=tab:?\ ,eol:¬ This works out of the box on my OS X machine. On Linux as well as Solaris I get the following error when I start vim: Error detected while processing /home/lhanson/.vimrc: line 17: E474: Invalid argument: listchars=tab:?~V?\ ,eol:¬ I solved this on my Linux box by setting LANG=en_US.utf8 ('locale -a' shows this as being an option). On Solaris, however, 'locale -a' shows the following: C POSIX iso_8859_1 Setting LANG to C or POSIX yields the same error, and even though iso_8859_1 probably wouldn't work it doesn't successfully change the locale anyway. As a non-root user, is there any way I can have my unicode characters show up?

  hi all I have 3 PC's at home (with Win XP, Win 7 & Win 7) and a router. I am always connected to the internet through the router (PPoE connection). My problem is that sometimes when I want to search or open a page, my browser tells me that the server cannot be reached, as if I don't have a connection to the internet. Other times it logs me out from messenger, but browsing still works. FTP download/upload also works. If i disable and enable the LAN then all works fine. Anyone got any idea besides re-installing OS? thanks

• Ubuntu security with services running from /opt

  It took me a while to understand what's going on here (I think), but can someone explain to me if there are security risks with regards to my logic of what's going on here as I am trying to set up a home web server as a developer with some good Linux knowledge? Ubuntu is not like other systems, as it has restricted the root user account. You can not log in as root or su to root. This was a problem for me as I have had to install numerous applications and services to /opt as per user documentation (XAMPPfor Linux is a good example). The problem here is that this directory is owned by root:root. I notice that my admin user account does not belong to root group through the following command: groups username so my understanding is that even though the files and services that I place in /opt belong to root, executing them by means of sudo (as required) does not mean that they are run as root? I imagine that the sudo command is hidden somewhere under belonging to the root user and has a 775 permission? So the question I have is if running a service like Tomcat, Apcahe, etc exposes my system like on other systems? Obviously I need to secure these in configurations, but isn't the golden rule to never run something as root? What happens if I have multiple services running under same user/group with regards to a compromised server?

  Our office will be using Office 2011 for email contacts and calendar. Currently we are using apple mail/ical and address book. My primary concern is syncing calendars with google apps. That said our primary feature that we use google apps calendar for is sharing calendars. Best way to using office 2011... To sync calendars with an iPhone? To sync/share calendars between users? To sync contacts with an iphone? To sync/share contacts with between users? Users are on other computers and mostly work from home Needs to be fool proof once setup :-) I am not fond of the idea of syncing outlook with Mac address book and ical then to the iphone.

• How not to send all traffic over SBS connection?

  Hi, My girlfriend uses SBS Connection Manager to connect to her company's network. The problem is that the internet connection is überslow at work, so she wants to use the home internet connection to surf the web and use the SBS Connection to get to her work stuff. Normally with a VPN connection you just have to uncheck a box "Send all traffic over VPN connection" or "Use VPN as default gateway" or something like that. As I've never seen this SBS Connection Manager-thing before, I've no idea where to uncheck a similar box. (I've checked the properties of the connection in Network Connections, but it only has a few options about logging and firewall). Thanks for any help in advance! Kind regards, Niels R.

• Starcraft II on Wine - Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this might seem like a repeat question, but I've literally looked over 100 threads on how to get SC2 to work on ubuntu 12.04 through wine and none have worked. I downloaded wine new today, and inserted my purchased SC2 disk. When I try to open the installer (installer.exe) with wine, an error appear saying: "No installer data could be found. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support." I searched for solutions to mediate this issue and was directed to the following source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435314 . I followed directions through until I got to ls I tried various combinations of (ls installer.exe, ls'/home/rothic/Desktop/Installer.exe, etc.) All come back with "no such file or directory". Im not sure what to do, the next step would be to replace the "starcraft_installer" with the starcraft installer file, which Im not sure how to do (very new to linux). I tried WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_starcraft/ wine starcraft_installer and it says "wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\starcraft_installer.exe" despite it being on the desktop as advised. Any suggestions on where to go from here?
