I need to create an Active Directory lab that contains printers and test out various printer-related functionality (adding printers in AD, clients attaching to printers, printers, etc)
Is there a good way to properly simulate printers on a network? Or does there need to be real physical printers somewhere that eventually are attached, even if no output comes out.
How would you solve this problem?
My parents have a number of really large albums and the pictures are starting to face in a lot of cases so we thought it would be a good idea to scan in all the pictures and move them to online albums. The issue is that the task is daunting given that there are thousands of pictures.
Are there any services or ideas on how to scan in albums of pictures that won't take up hundreds of man hours for me?
Hi everyone,
I am about to setup a home network server running Ubuntu Server and I'm currently a bit worried about how to handle network shares and permissions in a good way.
After working a bit lately with Netgears ReadyNAS's units, I have become really spoiled with how easy it was to set up network shares and giving a specific user different levels of network access to a specific share (forbidden access, read, read/write).
How would I accomplish the same with my Ubuntu server through SSH?
Thanks a lot
I have a quad socket octo-core system running FreeBSD. Currently, I need to turn off HyperThreading to get it to boot, as FreeBSD only supports 32 CPUs. There were some patches made awhile ago against a trunk version of 8.1, but even after modifying them slightly to work and compile with 8.1-RELEASE, the machine wouldn't boot.
Has there been any progress here? I can't find much good information about it, Google thinks I'm talking about 64-bit architecture and not literally 64 CPUs.
I'm looking for some software for my OpenSUSE, which with I would be able to organize my audio files.
I've found one, which may be good, but it's unable to run without X server (in CLI).

I'm not looking for ID3 renamers. There're maybe hundreds of them... I'm looking for software, which has its own database, or is able to communicate with some database, like CDDB, Gracenote, last.fm etc.
I have currently been tasked with tracking down an IP KVM for our new data center, but I'm coming up blank on good reviews of KVMs. We're looking at a rack of 5 to 10 servers that would be hooked in. Does anyone have some recommendations on places to research KVMs, or have some of their own recommendations?
Used DropBox for this purpose for a while, but now it refuses to sync an sqlite database which is open using a shared lock. Are there any good alternatives?
Tried Live Mesh, Sugar Sync and SpiderOak. SpiderOak looked most promising, but for some reason doesn't synchronize at all. Thanks!
I have seen some questions that are similar to my problem but not a good solution.
Ex. User has a laptop and has a static IP address at the office. They also take the laptop off site where they also need internet.
Is there a way to configure their computer so that it will obtain an IP address automatically when the configured static address is not available (without making the user go into network configuration and changing to obtain automatically)?
I wanted to set up caching on all the junk my webserver serves, but I would like a good idea of what production-level services use cache wise? For some reason I can't pick my own times for things like js, css, png, jpg, etc.
Hi
I'm a used Ubuntu user on a pc, and I like the french keyboard layout because it allows me to type accentued characters easily.
I found a win-fr keyboard layout but it's much like windows and not so good.
I found xmodmap.fr keyboard layout and I'd like to know if it was possible use it with my Mac SL 10.6.5, maybe I could do xmodmap xmodmap.fr or a way to convert to mac layout file.
Any ideas?!
This silly design of the status bar popping up and disappearing is really bothering me. I used to have a few good extensions on my status bar in Firefox (Pagerank, AdBlock, etc) and now they all have to be placed in strange locations on the toolbars near the top without easily displaying any relevant information.
Is there a way I can get the status bar back and use it similarly to FF?
FUSE filesystem list show some FuseFat and FatFuse. Both are old, FatFuse is read-only , FuseFat is non-buildable and probably depends on glib.
Now I'm using mountlo for the task (mounting USB drives in generic way without root access or suid things (except of fusermount itself)), but it looks too big for such task.
Is there good vfat FUSE driver?
I'm interested in any software, experience or guidelines listed that help to deal with listing installed services, their primary user (or business person that is responsible for this service), domain names, ip addresses, ports in your servers.
Servers are both Windows and Linux, so licenses are also good to track with all of this information.
Scale of the infrastructure in question - 20-50 servers.
Currently we have no better idea as to use Excel for it.
I've been using VLC player but since the latest version (2.0.1) it's rendering all the Hebrew subtitles as question marks.
I'm looking for a good free alternative that runs on Windows OS.
I prefer a player with a huge dashboard and zillion preferences where all the possible options are customizable.
Once ago I used MV2 player and loved that type of player that supports all the possible tweaks etc. etc.
Hello,
I'm trying to get my windows based emacs to handle mails. Is there any emacs based mail reader that would run on windows? By running, I mean fetch from imap, show and reply to mails without external applications.
I've heard many good things about Wanderlust but the webpage suggests it is not supported.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
I created a custom LDAP objectClass, but forgot a couple attributes before I added it to my OpenLDAP server. I followed the instructions on this Ubuntu doc page: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/openldap-server.html I am running Ubuntu 12.04.
So, how do I add a new MAY attribute to an objectClass that is already applied to the server?
Specifically on OpenLDAP, but it would be good to know how for Novell eDirectory as well.
Hello.
I've noticed that directories' permissions for my automounted USB hard drive formatted in NTFS in Ubuntu 9.10 are 700. This is inconvenient for me. On Ubuntu 8.04 LTS it was 777 everywhere and it was good. Where can I change those default automount permissions for such a drive?
Thank you.
How can I manage a domain with the "Active Directory Users and Computers" from a computer that is not on that domain? I realize I'll need some domain admin (or less) credentials, but that's fine.
I have 2 scenarios where I'd like to do this:
From a machine on Domain 1 but I'd also like to manage Domain 2 (the 2 domains are in no way related)
From a laptop that is not a member of any domain.
If we can figure out #2, that will be "good enough" but #1 would be nice too.
Hello,
I installed Windows 7 on VMWare and it works just fine! However, when I leave the machine idling and work on my host OS, Windows 7 decides that it is a good idea to thrash disk and kill performance.
How do I disable these background processes? Is it just indexer?
Hi
I need help on how to increase the mouse sensitivity even further, because I maxed it out using the settings interface, and it's not enough . (I've tried two diffrent mouses that both are really good in windows so that shouldn't be the problem...)
So what solution is there to this problem?
(Using ubuntu and I've tried in both 9.10 and 10.4)
In the past I have always run a NAT router between my Windows PC's and the internet. I'm wondering if I still need this or whether the OSX firewall is good enough to let me put a Mac directly on the internet.
A few weeks ago I came across a utility which listed good quality free/open source software and made it easy to install - stuff like Firefox, Open Office, GIMP etc....
...and now I can't find it. Clues gratefully received!
