• Strange IIS/Asp.net Exception Message

  I have a standard asp.net 2.0 application running on IIS 6. I have noticed some strange exception messages in the logs. They seem to be caused by random spam bots trying to submit forms. They are strange because the request string is huge and all the exception details in the event manager are messed up, they have been replaced with %21,%22, etc.. as seen in the screen shot. Is this some kind of exploit or just a bug in the asp.net exception handler/logger ? UPDATE: I traced the requests that are causing this strange log event to a bug in IE8 that causes it to request scriptresource.axd?d={html from page} as described in these links: MS Connect SO - Invalid Webresource.axd SO - IE8 Dropping Memory Pages I am still not sure why these requests would break the IIS log event like seen above, they are just long strings of jiberish being sent to the server, maybe someone reading this can shed some light on it.

• Checking All Checkboxes in a GridView Using jQuery

  In May 2006 I wrote two articles that showed how to add a column of checkboxes to a GridView and offer the ability for users to check (or uncheck) all checkboxes in the column with a single click of the mouse. The first article, Checking All CheckBoxes in a GridView, showed how to add "Check All" and "Uncheck All" buttons to the page above the GridView that, when clicked, checked or unchecked all of the checkboxes. The second article, Checking All CheckBoxes in a GridView Using Client-Side Script and a Check All CheckBox, detailed how to add a checkbox to the checkbox column in the grid's header row that would check or uncheck all checkboxes in the column. Both articles showed how to implement such functionality on the client-side, thereby removing the need for a postback. The JavaScript presented in these two previous articles still works, but the techniques used are a bit antiquated and hamfisted given the advances made in JavaScript programming over the past few years. For instance, the script presented in the previous articles uses server-side code in the GridView's DataBound event handler to assign a client-side onclick event handler to each checkbox. While this works, it violates the tenets of unobtrusive JavaScript, which is a design guideline for JavaScript programming that encourages a clean separation of functionality from presentation. (Ideally, event handlers for HTML elements are defined in script.) Also, the quantity of JavaScript used in the two previous articles is quite hefty compared to the amount of code that would be needed using modern JavaScript libraries like jQuery. This article presents updated JavaScript for checking (and unchecking) all checkboxes within a GridView. The two examples from the previous articles - checking/unchecking all checkboxes using a button and checking/unchecking all checkboxes using a checkbox in the header row - are reimplemented here using jQuery and unobtrusive JavaScript techniques. • Unity3D - Projection matrix camera frustum

  I've used off centre projection to create a custom projection matrix for my camera. When I run the game I can see the scene correctly in the game view but in the editor view the camera frustum is not correct. It still shows the original frustum shape not the new one. It also appears that Unity is using the original frustum for frustum culling and not the new one as I can see object being culled which are visible to the new frustum but would not be visible in the old one. Am I wrong in thinking that a custom projection matrix would alter the view frustum? Or am I missing something else?

• Pros and cons of using Grails compared to pure Groovy

  Say, you (by you I mean an abstract guy, any guy in your team) have experience of writing and building java web apps, know about filters, servlet mappings and so on, and so on. Also, let us assume you know pretty well any sql db, no matter which one exactly, whether it mysql, oracle or psql. At last, let pretend we know Groovy and its standard libraries, for example all that JsonBuilder and XmlSlurper stuff, so we don't need grails converters. The question is - what are benefits of using grails in this case. I'm not trying to start flame war, I'm just asking to compare - what are ups and downs of grails development compared to pure groovy one. For instance, off the top of my head I can name two pluses - automatic DB mapping and custom gsp tags. But when I want to write a modest app which provides small API for handling some well defined set of data, I'm totally OK with groovy's awesome SQL support. As for gsp, we does not use it at all, so we are not interested in custom tags as well.

It has to be a really tough one - something that they can't just copy from the internet and something that tests their in-depth knowledge on Swing. I can think of things like split screen windows, and custom UI controls that would involve custom paining. If you were to prepare such an assignment, what would you do? Please share your thoughts/experiences.

• In Visio 2010, how can I create a mandatory, non-identifying relationship between two database tables

  I'm working in MS Visio 2010. This is the relevant part of my ERD: The relationship between Event and Adventure is correct: there's a foreign key from Event to Adventure, and that FK is part of Event's primary key. However, what I can't figure out is how to make the relationship line from Adventure to AccomodationType be the same, without making that relationship part of the PK of adventure. When I look at the 'Miscellaneous' properties of that relationship line, I want it to be: Cardinality: Zero or more Relationship type: Non-identifying Child has parent: Not optional (mandatory) But the checkbox for the third property is greyed out, and toggles between True/False as I make the relationship Non-identifying/Identifying. The only way I could figure out was to disconnect the two columns, from the 'Definition' tab, which then un-grey's the 'Optional' checkbox, but then I lose the foreign key property on the accomType column, and while the relationship symbols are correct, the line remains dotted. Any ideas, anyone?

• How can I edit/create new launcher items in Unity by hand?

  Will Unity allow making custom launcher icons from .desktop files or via menu editing system? (Right now the launcher doesn't give the option to "keep in launcher" on all programs. For some programs I use, I have to make custom launchers or .desktop files. For instance, daily blender builds are generally just folders with an executable. In basic gnome or kde, I can make a new menu entry with the menu editing system. Then, I can also add it to docky either from the menu or by dragging a .desktop file to it. Unity launcher doesn't support drag and drop, so thats not a bug or anything, but when i open a .desktop file, it has unpredictable results. Most time it will not have"keep in launcher". Sometime it will have a pinnable item without the .desktop's icon, and if i pin the item to the launcher, it will not call upon the program again after closing it. I've also gotten it to just work with a .desktop file for "celtx".

  Sometimes it's very confusing how Sharepoint 2010 group creation works Here's a scenario we have been facing from a long time wrt groups in SharePoint 2010 We had requirement of creating a two custom groups followed by creating a custom site through programmatically, For the most case the scenario works as how it is excepted to work. but, out of 1/100 site creation process the groups creation fails, which means we were able to access the group and users associated with it through programmatically. but, when it comes to UI stand point if you try to access the specific group page from the site permissions page - SharePoint returns a BLANK WHITE Page... BLANK WHITE Page... nothing else... Ain't is this a Sharepoint 2010 issue. or anybody had this problem and fixed it. Kindly share your thoughts

• JavaScript: Code Folding

  Today I would like to mentioned code folding in the new JavaScript editor support, which is available in the continual builds from our server. It's a basic feature, but was mentioned in a comment under the mentioned post. So you can fold comments and every code block between { and }. The current support allows only methods to be folded. The difference is shown below. In the picture on the left side is the current folding and on the right side the new one.   The code folding can be switched off in the Editor Options (Tools main menu -> Options -> Editor category -> General Tab). In this dialog you can also define which folds should be collapsed by default when you open a file. These options more closely fit Java editor needs, but you can see in the next picture how the options are mapped for JavaScript code.  The Method option folds all functions in the code. Other code blogs are fold through the option Tags and Other Code Blogs.  The documentation comments (starts with /**) are fold through Javadoc Comments and when you check Initial Comment, then all comments that start with /* are folded by default.  The new JavaScript editor also supports custom folds. To add your custom fold, type in two special comments as shown in this example: // <editor-fold> Your code goes here... // </editor-fold> You can define the default description of a collapsed fold by adding a "desc" attribute: // <editor-fold desc="This is my super secret genius code."> Your code goes here... // </editor-fold> You can set a fold to be collapsed by default by adding a "defaultstate" attribute: // <editor-fold defaultstate="collapsed"> Your code goes here... // </editor-fold> There is a code template that helps with writing custom fold comments. • Mouse click events are delayed when moving the cursor in xubuntu 12.04

  I am trying out live xubuntu on my samsung n150 (netbook, similar to eeepc). So far everything seems perfect, except for this one thing. When I am clicking the mouse while moving the cursour, the click event is delayed. This is extremely annoying when i try to to move windows, because i end up clicking the window behind the window i am trying to move and thereby changing focus. This goes for all applications. I.e selecting text is difficult. There is no lag in the cursor movement, just the click event. The click event is registered with the new mouse position, not the one when the mouse was clicked. I tried searching for the problem, but all the other cases where either kind of different, or had no solution. EDIT: After testing some more, here are some more information. The click doesn't occur until i stop moving the cursor. If I move the cursor smoothly around, the click never gets through. I have ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 installed, and have no problems with the mouse there. EDIT2: Once I connected a usb-mouse, the problem dissappeared. Dragging now works perfectly with both the track pad and the usb mouse. I will update once I have installed xubuntu and figured out if this is a persistant problem. EDIT3: I have installed, and the problem is still there. It dissappears when I have a second mouse connected however, and after I resume from suspend. My solution for now, is just to keep the dongle connected all the time.

• Strategy for building an application to replace a large spreadsheet

  I'm working on an application that is going to replace a rather large spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is used to budget purchases and things like that. It is the largest spreadsheet I have ever seen, and it required a lot of manual data entry, so this application is going to automate much of that. But as I'm working on this I've noticed its slow going. And I got to thinking this must be a common thing to do many companies will start with something like a spreadsheet, then when they get too big to maintain that, they will get a custom application built. So is there anything out there ( a framework or similar ) that does this sort of thing, migrating a spreadsheet to a custom application. I've had a quick Google but not really seen the kind of thing that I'm looking for. It's too late for this project, but I thought it would be worth having a look for next time. How do you guys tackle this problem?

What design would you recommend for a database that is Memory resident Must run on windows, linux and (at a stretch) the mac Accept multiple queries simultaneously Have minimum overhead, since a search is expected to take <0.25s This program implements a domain-specific search. Think of it as a database, but one that takes advantage of domain specific information to outperform a convential database search (for example, with custom oracle indexing). We have a custom data structure for our data. Our protoype is a simple exe that constructs the database in memory each time it is run. We were thinking that perhaps this program would suffice, but augmented with sockets so it can listen for queries. This database will be static. Its contents will change infrequently. We expect queries, and the solution, to be delivered via a web service.

Given the following: 1) I own a domain name foobar.com purchased from another registrar (not from Wordpress.com). 2) I have purchased the Custom Domain option on Wordpress.com, and have completed the configuration to make foobar.com resolve to foobar.wordpress.com. 3) I will establish an external site for a store, such as store.yahoo.com/foobar. 4) I want to redirect the subdomain store.foobar.com to store.yahoo.com/foobar. How do I set up the Custom DNS records within Wordpress.com to accomplish this subdomain redirection, while leaving foobar.com pointed to my Wordpress blog? • How to manage focus for a small set of simple widgets

  I'm developing a set of simple widgets for a small (128x128) display. For example I'd like to have a main screen with an overlay menu which I can use to toggle visibilty of main screen elements. Each option would be an icon with a box around it while it is selected. Button (left, up, right, down, enter) events should be given to the widget that has "focus". Focus is a simple thing to understand when using a GUI, but I'm having trouble implementing this. Can you suggest a simple concept for managing focus and input events? I have these simple ideas: Only one widget can have focus, so I need a single pointer to that widget. When this widget gets some kind of "cycle" input (as in "highlight the next item in this list"), the focus is given to a different widget. a widget must have a way of telling the application which widget the focus is given to next. if a widget cannot give a "next focus" hint, the application must be able to figure out where the focus should go. Widgets are currently structured like this: A widget can have a parent, which is passed to the constructor. Widgets are created statically, as I want to avoid dynamic memory allocation (I only have 16kB of RAM and I'd like to have control over that). widgets have siblings, implemented as an intrusive linked list (they have a next member). A parent has a pointer to the head of its list of children. Input events are arguments to the widgets buttonEvent methods which can accept or ignore that event. If it ignores the event, it can pass the event to its parent. My Questions: How can I manage focus for these widgets? Am I making this too complicated?

• Own an iPad, iPhone, or Touch? Add GWB to your Home

  I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas? Here is a shot of my iPad 3G: Also, would anyone be interested in a Geekswithblogs.net custom background for the iPhone or iPad?  I can put something together real quick if there are any takers.
