• Finding a 3rd party QWidget with injected code & QWidget::find(hwnd)

  Hey, I have a Qt Dll wich I inject into a third-party Application using windows detours library: if(!DetourCreateProcessWithDll( Path, NULL, NULL, NULL, TRUE, CREATE_DEFAULT_ERROR_MODE | CREATE_SUSPENDED, NULL, NULL, &si, &pi, "C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Research\\Detours Express 2.1\\bin\\detoured.dll", "C:\\Users\\Dave\\Documents\\Visual Studio 2008\\Projects\\XOR\\Debug\\XOR.dll", NULL)) and then I set a system-wide hook to intercept window creation: HHOOK h_hook = ::SetWindowsHookEx(WH_CBT, (HOOKPROC)CBTProc, Status::getInstance()->getXORInstance(), 0); Where XOR is my programs name, and Status::getInstance() is a Singleton where I keep globals. In my CBTProc callback, I want to intercept all windows that are QWidgets: HWND hwnd= FindWindow(L"QWidget", NULL); which works well, since I get a corresponding HWND (I checked with Spy++) Then, I want to get a pointer to the QWidget, so I can use its functions: QWidget* q = QWidget::find(hwnd); but here's the problem, the returned pointer is always 0. Am I not injecting my code into the process properly? Or am I not using QWidget::find() as I should? • MS Access Interop - How to set print filename?

  Hi all, I'm using Delphi 2009 and the MS Access Interop COM API. I'm trying to figure out two things, but one is more important than the other right now. I need to know how to set the file name when sending the print job to the spooler. Right now it's defaulting to the Access DB's name, which can be something different than the file's name. I need to just ensure that when this is printed it enters the print spool using the same filename as the actual file itself - not the DB's name. My printer spool is actually a virtual print driver that converts documents to an image. That's my main issue. The second issue is how to specify which printer to use. This is less important at the moment because I'm just using the default printer for now. It would be nice if I could specify the printer to use, though. Does anyone know either of these two issues?   I am trying to write a custom script that will keep a list of strings in a textarea. Each line of the textarea will be a row from a table. The problem I have is how to work the script to allow for adding, updating, or deleting rows based on a submit. So, for instance, I currently have 3 rows in the database: john sue mark I want to be able to delete sue and add richard and it will delete the row with sue and insert a row for richard. • Approximate string matching with a letter confusion matrix?

  I'm trying to model a phonetic recognizer that has to isolate instances of words (strings of phones) out of a long stream of phones that doesn't have gaps between each word. The stream of phones may have been poorly recognized, with letter substitutions/insertions/deletions, so I will have to do approximate string matching. However, I want the matching to be phonetically-motivated, e.g. "m" and "n" are phonetically similar, so the substitution cost of "m" for "n" should be small, compared to say, "m" and "k". So, if I'm searching for [mein] "main", it would match the letter sequence [meim] "maim" with, say, cost 0.1, whereas it would match the letter sequence [meik] "make" with, say, cost 0.7. Similarly, there are differing costs for inserting or deleting each letter. I can supply a confusion matrix that, for each letter pair (x,y), gives the cost of substituting x with y, where x and y are any letter or the empty string. I know that there are tools available that do approximate matching such as agrep, but as far as I can tell, they do not take a confusion matrix as input. That is, the cost of any insertion/substitution/deletion = 1. My question is, are there any open-source tools already available that can do approximate matching with confusion matrices, and if not, what is a good algorithm that I can implement to accomplish this?

• ActionScript 3.0: placing code on stage/MC timelines a la AS2 instead of in classes

  I'm aware that ActionScript 3.0 is designed from the ground up to be a largely object-oriented language and using it means less or even no timeline code in Flash documents. I'm quite experienced with OOP and am comfortable writing classes. However, since I mostly use Flash for animations, I hardly ever need to write ActionScript code other than for preloaders, subtitles, quality controls, website links and so on. In fact, I still set my Flash movies to use AS2 to this day because I'm used to gotoAndPlay()/gotoAndStop(), AS2 preloaders, subtitles, quality controls and even getURL(). Of course, I really want to move on now that practically everyone's on Flash Player 9 or 10 and now that I've dabbled with other OO languages like Java, C# and Objective-C too. I'm a complete newcomer to AS3 and am not very learned with AS2 either. Considering my current use of ActionScript, are there any cases where it's still OK to use very simple AS3 code in the timeline instead of moving code to a class, especially since moving to a class might mean unnecessarily increasing the number of LOC from 4 to 40? (Heck, is the latter case ('instead of ...') even a valid concern at all?)

• best practice for boolean REST results

  I have a resource /system/resource And I wish to ask the system a boolean question about the resource that can't be answered by processing on the client (i.e I can't just GET the resource and look through the actual resource data - it requires some processing on the backend using data not available to the client). eg /system/resource/related/otherresourcename I want this is either return true or false. Does anyone have any best practice examples for this type of interaction? Possibilities that come to my mind: use of HTTP status code, no returned body (smells wrong) return plain text string (True, False, 1, 0) - Not sure what string values are appropriate to use, and furthermore this seems to be ignoring the Accept media type and always returning plain text come up with a boolean object for each of my support media types and return the appropriate type (a JSON document with a single boolean result, an XML document with a single boolean field). However this seems unwieldy. I don't particularly want to get into a long discussion about the true meaning of a RESTful system etc - I have used the word REST in the title because it best expresses the general flavour of system I am designing (even if perhaps I am tending more towards RPC over the web rather than true REST). However, if someone has some thoughts on how a true RESTful system avoids this problem entirely I would be happy to hear them.

  Are there any good alternatives to SQLite + FTS3 for python? I'm iterating over a series of text documents, and would like to categorize them according to some text queries. For example, I might want to know if a document mentions the words "rating" or "upgraded" within three words of "buy." The FTS3 syntax for this query is the following: (rating OR upgraded) NEAR/3 buy That's all well and good, but if I use FTS3, this operation seems rather expensive. The process goes something like this: # create an SQLite3 db in memory conn = sqlite3.connect(':memory:') c = conn.cursor() c.execute('CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE fts USING FTS3(content TEXT)') conn.commit() Then, for each document, do something like this: #insert the document text into the fts table, so I can run a query c.execute('insert into fts(content) values (?)', content) conn.commit() # execute my FTS query here, look at the results, etc # remove the document text from the fts table before working on the next document c.execute('delete from fts') conn.commit() This seems rather expensive to me. The other problem I have with SQLite FTS is that it doesn't appear to work with Python 2.5.4. The 'CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE' syntax is unrecognized. This means that I'd have to upgrade to Python 2.6, which means re-testing numerous existing scripts and programs to make sure they work under 2.6. Is there a better way? Perhaps a different library? • iPhone and Core Data: how to retain user-entered data between updates?

  Consider an iPhone application that is a catalogue of animals. The application should allow the user to add custom information for each animal -- let's say a rating (on a scale of 1 to 5), as well as some notes they can enter in about the animal. However, the user won't be able to modify the animal data itself. Assume that when the application gets updated, it should be easy for the (static) catalogue part to change, but we'd like the (dynamic) custom user information part to be retained between updates, so the user doesn't lose any of their custom information. We'd probably want to use Core Data to build this app. Let's also say that we have a previous process already in place to read in animal data to pre-populate the backing (SQLite) store that Core Data uses. We can embed this database file into the application bundle itself, since it doesn't get modified. When a user downloads an update to the application, the new version will include the latest (static) animal catalogue database, so we don't ever have to worry about it being out of date. But, now the tricky part: how do we store the (dynamic) user custom data in a sound manner? My first thought is that the (dynamic) database should be stored in the Documents directory for the app, so application updates don't clobber the existing data. Am I correct? My second thought is that since the (dynamic) user custom data database is not in the same store as the (static) animal catalogue, we can't naively make a relationship between the Rating and the Notes entities (in one database) and the Animal entity (in the other database). In this case, I would imagine one solution would be to have an "animalName" string property in the Rating/Notes entity, and match it up at runtime. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a way to "sync" two different databases in Core Data?

• iPhone SDK: How do you download video files to the Document Directory and then play them?

  I've been fooling around with code for ages on this one, I would be very grateful if someone could provide a code sample that downloaded this file from a server http://www.archive.org/download/june_high/june_high_512kb.mp4, (By the way it's not actually this file, it's just a perfect example for anyone trying to help me) and then play it from the documents directory. I know it seems lazy of me to ask this but I have tried so many different variations of NSURLConnection that it's driving me crazy. Also, if I did manage to get the video file downloaded would I be correct in assuming this code would then successfully play it: NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES); NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0]; NSString *path = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"june_high_512kb.mp4"]; NSURL *movieURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:path]; self.theMovie = [[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:movieURL]; [_theMovie play]; If the above code would work in playing a video file from the document directory, then I guess the only thing I would need to know is, how to download a video file from a server.   When using the CvMat type, the type of data is crucial to keeping your program running. For example, depending on whether your data is type float or unsigned char, you would choose one of these two commands: cvmGet(mat, row, col); cvGetReal2D(mat, row, col); Is there a universal approach to this? If the wrong data type matrix is passed to these calls, they crash at runtime. This is becoming an issue, since a function I have defined is getting passed several different types of matrices. How do you determine the data type of a matrix so you can always access its data? I tried using the "type()" function as such. When it comes to career planning I think I pretty much agree with The Journeyman to Craftsman model coined in The Pragmatic Probrammer and used by Bob Martin. I see myself as a journeyman and I won't call myself a "good" (for want of a better word) until I re-evaluate my skills in 5 years time. However, as part of our careers we are encouraged to make one and three year plan with specific goals that we should hit. Unfortunately, my goal is this: Write clean code that solves a problem and is easy to maintain. From a technology point of view I want to know C++ and .net programming inside out(C#, WCF etc..) But that's it. That's my plan. Is this enough? • ActiveX not working properly with default security settings

  I have written an ActiveX control in C# and have made it working using regasm command, and it works fine as long as the security level is set to low.. Then as a next step I have made a .cab installer (ICD - Internet component downloader), and have signed my .cab file and ActiveX .dll file with a test certificate. when I hit the html page from my browser the installation parts works fine with default security settings of IE, but at the end it seems that nothing is installed and a red cross is shown on place of ActiveX. Moreover I have explored the Download Program Files folder under Windows directory, in status column it is showing word "unknown". while it is "installed" for all other activeX. what may be the problem. Moreover if i use the regasm command to register the assembly it works fine, and I have signed the ActiveX but still I have to move the security bar to low in my browser setting? why it is so? then what is the purpose of signing? I have used RegisterServer=yes in my .inf file Please let me know, if some one has gone through this problem already?

• Convert array to CSV/TSV-formated string in Python.

  Python provides csv.DictWriter for outputting CSV to a file. What is the simplest way to output CSV to a string or to stdout? For example, given a 2D array like this: [["a b c", "1,2,3"], ["i \"comma-heart\" you", "i \",heart\" u, too"]] return the following string: "a b c, \"1, 2, 3\"\n\"i \"\"comma-heart\"\" you\", \"i \"\",heart\"\" u, too\"" which when printed would look like this: a b c, "1,2,3" "i ""heart"" you", "i "",heart"" u, too" (I'm taking csv.DictWriter's word for it that that is in fact the canonical way to output that array as CSV. Excel does parse it correctly that way, though Mathematica does not. From a quick look at the wikipedia page on CSV it seems Mathematica is wrong.) One way would be to write to a temp file with csv.DictWriter and read it back with csv.DictReader. What's a better way? TSV instead of CSV It also occurs to me that I'm not wedded to CSV. TSV would make a lot of the headaches with delimiters and quotes go away: just replace tabs with spaces in the entries of the 2D array and then just intersperse tabs and newlines and you're done. Let's include solutions for both TSV and CSV in the answers to make this as useful as possible for future searchers.

• Images not uploading when htmlentities has 'UTF-8' set

  I have a form that, among other things, accepts an image for upload and sticks it in the database. Previously I had a function filtering the POSTed data that was basically: function processInput($stuff) { $formdata = $stuff; $formdata = htmlentities($formdata, ENT_QUOTES); return "'" . mysql_real_escape_string(stripslashes($formdata)) . "'"; } When, in an effort to fix some weird entities that weren't getting converted properly I changed the function to (all that has changed is I added that 'UTF-8' bit in htmlentities): function processInput($stuff) { $formdata = $stuff; $formdata = htmlentities($formdata, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8'); //added UTF-8 return "'" . mysql_real_escape_string(stripslashes($formdata)) . "'"; } And now images will not upload. What would be causing this? Simply removing the 'UTF-8' bit allows images to upload properly but then some of the MS Word entities that users put into the system show up as gibberish. What is going on?

  Hi. I'm having trouble deserializing a ruby class that I wrote to YAML. Where I want to be I want to be able to pass one object around as a full 'question' which includes the question text, some possible answers (For multi. choice) and the correct answer. One module (The encoder) takes input, builds a 'question' class out of it and appends it to the question pool. Another module reads a question pool and builds an array of 'question' objects. Where I am currently Sample Question Pool --- | --- !ruby/object:MultiQ a: "no" answer: "no" b: "no" c: "no" d: "no" text: "yes?" Encoder dump to YAML file. Object is a MultiQ filled up with input. • Can I compare a template variable to an integer in App Engine templates?

  Using Django templates in Google App Engine (on Python), is it possible to compare a template variable to an integer in an {% if %} block? views.py: class MyHandler(webapp.RequestHandler): def get(self): foo_list = db.GqlQuery(...) ... template_values['foos'] = foo_list template_values['foo_count'] = len(foo_list) handler.response.out.write(template.render(...)) My template: {% if foo_count == 1 %} There is one foo. {% endif %} This blows up with 'if' statement improperly formatted. What I was attempting to do in my template was build a simple if/elif/else tree to be grammatically correct to be able to state #foo_count == 0: There are no foos. #foo_count == 1: There is one foo. #else: There are {{ foos|length }} foos. Browsing the Django template documents (this link provided in the GAE documentation appears to be for versions of Django far newer than what is supported on GAE), it appears as if I can only actually use boolean operators (if in fact boolean operators are supported in this older version of Django) with strings or other template variables. Is it not possible to compare variables to integers or non-strings with Django templates? I'm sure there is an easy way to workaround this - built up the message string on the Python side rather than within the template - but this seems like such a simple operation you ought to be able to handle in a template. It sounds like I should be switching to a more advanced templating engine, but as I am new to Django (templates or any part of it), I'd just like some confirmation first.

• Annoying IE7 problem.

  I am styling a Wordpress theme but has run into problem with IE7. The first word("it") inside the paragraph/strong tag ends up to the left of the img tag when I want it BELOW the image. My problem is that the only element I can change CSS properties here is the div, since the code inside is posted with a WYSIWYG by an blog author. Is there anyway i can fix this problem?
