• ASP.NET How expensive is it to call an Application Variable many times?

  The short of it is: Is it costly to check an Application Variable such as Application("WebAppName") more 10-20 times each time a page loads? Background: (feel free to critique) Some includes in my site contain many links and images which cannot use relative urls due to their inclusion in different paths. Hence these includes contain frequent instances of <img src="<%=Application("Webroot")%>images\image.gif"> Is it expensive to keep calling an Application variable like this? Should I just put the Application value in some local variable to use where needed? IMPORTANT NOTE: I need my webapp to run fine on a server whether it be in the root web ("/") or in a virtual subweb ("/app"). Thanks in advance for any wisdom shared.

  Hello, all! I have a SQL Server database for which I have created a strongly-typed DataSet (using the DataSet Designer in Visual Studio 2008), so all the adapters and select commands and whatnot were created for me by the wizard. It's a small database with largely static data, so I would like to pull the contents of this DB in its entirety into my application at startup, and then grab individual pieces of data as needed using LINQ. Rather than hard-code each adapter Fill call, I would like to see if there is a way to automate this (possibly via Reflection). So, instead of: Dim _ds As New dsTest dsTestTableAdapters.Table1TableAdapter.Fill(_ds.Table1) dsTestTableAdapters.Table2TableAdapter.Fill(_ds.Table2) <etc etc etc> I would prefer to do something like: Dim _ds As New dsTest For Each tableName As String In _ds.Tables Dim adapter as Object = <routine to grab adapter associated with the table> adapter.Fill(tableName) Next Is that even remotely doable? I have done a fair amount of searching, and I wouldn't think this would be an uncommon request, but I must be either asking the wrong question, or I'm just weird to want to do this. I will admit that I usually prefer to use unbound controls and not go with strongly-typed datasets (I prefer to write SQL directly), but my company wants to go this route, so I'm researching it. I think the idea is that as tables are added, we can just refresh the DataSet using the Designer in Visual Studio and not have to make too many underlying DB code changes.   Hello. I'm currently using sp_executesql to execute a T-SQL statement with a dynamic table name. However, it is really ugly to see something like: set sql = 'UPDATE '+Table_Name+' SET ... WHERE '+someVar+' = ... AND '+someVar2' = ...' sp_executesql sql What I would rather like to have is a TABLE variable of which is a reference to a table, so I could do for example: UPDATE TableRef SET ... WHERE ... Because when I have really long T-SQL statements it gets really hard to read due to the format of it within a string. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

• Looking for an algorithm in vb.net or c# but I don't know it's name!

  I'll do my best to explain what the algorithm is supposed to do: There's a class 'Recipe'. Each Recipe can include other Recipes but cannot include itself or any other Recipe that includes it. So, a simple example is we have just two Recipes A & B. If A adds B first, then later on B cannot add A because it will cause a loop. A more complicated example is: A,B,C (1) Recipe C Adds B (2) Recipe B Adds A (3) Recipe A attempts to add C, but can't because of the relationship. C - B - A. I can do this myself, I just wondered if this was a standard named algorithm and I could grab the optimal solution. Thanks

  I can not make NHibernate 2.1 work in machines without framework 3.X (basically, windows 2000 SP4, although it happens with XP too). NHibernate doc do not mention this. Maybe you can help?   I have an ASP.NET application which runs under the Classic .NET AppPool in IIS. I have a report to render from my website. The problem is SQL Server keeps telling me that it failed to create a connection to the datasource, because login failed for user IUSR. After adding that user directly to the databse I could get the report to work, but I'm concerned about security. By doing that, am I opening my specified databases to all websites hosted on IIS? Or is that account identity-specific?

• How to add a service to the type descriptor context of a property grid in .Net?

  I have an app that allows the user to choose an image, at design time, either as a straight image, or from an image list. All cool so far, except that this is not happening from the visual studio property browser, its happening from a property grid that is a part of a type editor. My problem is, both the image picker (actually resource picker), and the imagelist type converter rely on some design-time services to get the job done. In the case of imagelist, its the IReferenceService and in the case of the resource picker its a service called _DTE. In the first instance of an edit from the visual studio property browser, I could get a reference to these services but (1) how can I add them to the type descriptor context of my property grid? It would be better, for future proofing, if I could just copy a reference to all of the services in the type descriptor context. (2) Where does the property browser get these services from in the first place? ETA: I still don't know how to do it, but I now know it is possible. (1) Sub-class control and add a property whose type is an array of buttons. (2) Add it to a form. (3) Select the new control on the design service and edit the new property in the property browser. (4) The collection editor dialog pops-up (5) Add a button (6) Edit image and image list - the type editor and type converter, respectively, behave as they should.

• How to get at specific HTML elements of a document using C# and Hide them/Show them etc.

  Basically I want to load a HTML document and using controls such as multiple check boxes which will be programmed to hide, delete or show HTML elements with certain ID's. So I am thinking I would have to set an inline CSS property for visibility to: false on the ones I want to hide or delete them altogether when necessary. I need this so I don't have to edit my Ebay HTML templates in dreamweaver all the time, where I usually have to scroll around messy code and manually delete or add tags and their respective content. Whereas I just want to create one master template in dreamweaver which has all the variations that my products have, since they are all of the same genre with slight changes here and there and I just need to enable and disable the visibility of these variants as required and copy + paste the final html. I haven's used Windows Forms before, but tried doing this in WebForms which I do know a bit. I am able to get the result that I want by wrapping any HTML elements in a <asp:PlaceHolder></asp:PlaceHolder> and just setting that place holders visibility to false after the associated checkbox is checked and a postback occurs, finally I add a checkbox/button control that removes all the checkboxes, including itself etc for final html. But this method seems just like too much pain in the ass as I have to add the placeholder tags around everything that I need control over as ordinary html elements do not run at server, also webforms injects a bunch of Javascript and ViewState data so I don't have clean HTML which I can just copy after viewing the page source. Any tips/code that you can suggest to achieve the desired effect with the least changes required to existing HTML documents? Ideally I would want to load the HTML document in, have a live design preview of it and underneath have a bunch of well labelled checkboxes programmed to hide, delete or show elements with certain ID's.   The current way our application is written, involves creating a new connection and command object in every method that access our sqlite db. Considering we need it to run on a WM5 device, that is leading to hideous performance. Our plan is to use just one connection object per-thread but it's also occurred to us to use one global command object per-thread too. The benefit of this is it reduces the overhead on the garbage collector created by instantiating objects all over the place. I can't find any advice against doing this but wondered if anyone can answer definitively if this is a good or bad thing to do, and why?

  At work I need to create a new web application, that will connection to an MySql Database. (So far I only have expercience with Linq-To-Sql classes and MSSQL Servers.) My superior tells me to use the entity framework (he probably refers to Linq-To-Entity) and provide everything as a service based architecture. Unfortunatly nobody at work has experience with that framework and with a real nice server oriented architecture. (till now no customer wanted to pay for architecture that he can't see. This speficic project I'm leading will be long-term, meaning multiple years, so it would be best to design it the way, that multiple targetting plattforms like asp.net, c# wpf, ... could use it) For now, the main target plattform is ASP.net So I do have the following questions: 1) Where can I read best what's really behind service oriented architecture (but for now beginner tutorials work fine as well) and how to do it in best practise? 2) So far I can't seem a real difference between Linq-To-Sql classes and the information I've google so far on the 'entity framework'. So, whats the difference? Where do I find nice tutorials for it. 3) Is there any difference in the entity framework regarding the database server (MSSQL or MySQL). If not, does that mean that code snipperts I will stumble across will word database independent? 4) I do you Visual Studio 2010. Do I have to regard something specific?

• Error on LDAP Login - xsessions error - Session lasted less than 10 seconds

  I have two machines both running CentOS 5.6 64bit. On the LDAP Machine it has a DHCP, BIND and OpenLDAP Server. LDAP is correctly configured and users can authenticate against it. Using root I configure machine 2 to use LDAP for authentication and when trying to log in it successfully authenticates against a saved user on the LDAP Server but produces the following errors and then throws me back to the login screen. I can still sign in as root and use the machine as normal. The syslog doesn't show any errors and I disabled SELinux to see if it was interfering. The error; Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not lgoged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. There is then a tickbox to view the contents of ~/.xsessions-errors which contains; /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with utmp /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/sessreg -a -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm:0:Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "admin" localuser:admin being added to access control list No profile for user 'admin' found /bin/sh: /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /etc/X11/Xinit/Xclients: No such file or directory /bin/sh: line 0: exec: /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients: cannot execute: No such file or directory Apologies if someone notices something isn't spelt quite right or doesn't sound right, the system never actually creates or saves this file so I have had to type it across from the screen. Through the authentication panel in CentOS on the client I have set it to create the users home directory on login. The user is being correctly authenticated and the /home/admin folder has been created but this error would suggest it has not? The client is a new install on an 80gb hard drive so there is well over 80% of the drive still available. Thanks for any suggestions or pointers.

When I am trying to debug the service calling event in the web application, the Just-in-Time debugger is popping up. It is running fine in the normal mode. Only in the debug mode the service is not running and JIT debugger is popping up also Why it happens? How to debug the service call in this scenario?   I have a asp.net app that I want to disable the buttons as soon as they are clicked in order to prevent multiple submissions. I'd like to use jquery for this as the site already liberally uses it anyway. What I've tried is: $(document).ready(function () { $("#aspnetForm").submit(function () { $('input[type=submit]', $(this)).attr("disabled", "disabled"); }) }); The above will disable the button, and the page submits, but the asp.net button on click handler is never called. Simply removing the above and the buttons work as normal. Is there a better way?

  Okay i have a custom server control that has some autocomplete settings, i have this as follows and it works fine. /// <summary> /// Auto complete settings /// </summary> [System.ComponentModel.DesignerSerializationVisibility (System.ComponentModel.DesignerSerializationVisibility.Content), PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerProperty), Category("Data"), Description("Auto complete settings"), NotifyParentProperty(true)] public AutoCompleteLookupSettings AutoComplete { private set; get; } I also have a ParameterCollection that is really related to the auto complete settings, currently this collection resides off the control itself like so : /// <summary> /// Parameters for any data lookups /// </summary> [System.ComponentModel.DesignerSerializationVisibility(System.ComponentModel.DesignerSerializationVisibility.Content), PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerProperty)] public ParameterCollection Parameters { get; set; } What i would like to do is move the parameter collection inside of the AutoCompleteSettings as it really relates to my autocomplete, i have tried this but to no avail.. I would like to move from <cc1:TextField ID="TextField1" runat='server'> <AutoComplete MethodName="GetTest" TextField="Item1" TypeName ="AppFrameWork.Utils" /> <Parameters> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtTest" PropertyName="Text" Name="test" /> </Parameters> </cc1:TextField> To <cc1:TextField ID="TextField1" runat='server'> <AutoComplete MethodName="GetTest" TextField="Item1" TypeName ="AppFrameWork.Utils" > <Parameters> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtTest" PropertyName="Text" Name="test" /> </Parameters> </AutoComplete> </cc1:TextField>
