  If I am more than a couple of metres from my access point (and I'm seeing this across various APs) with my newish Thinkpad Edge 15, running 10.10, the wifi performance becomes ... flaky. My question is threefold: how do I get better wifi range, what can/should I do about those messages in dmesg, and most crucially, are the two related? Edit: I am using this machine in exactly the same locations I used my previous Thinkpad (T61) running various older versions of Ubuntu, so I definitely feel there is something wrong, rather me having unreasonable expectations of range!

• What is the best way to configure Apache or AWS to support a Rails multi tenancy application that allows each customer to have their own domain name?

  I'm building a Rails 3 SaaS site that allows for multi-tenancy. When a customer signs up they put in their own domain name, e.g. example.com. I need example.com to point to my SaaS application and serve them their content. My questions are as follows: Do I need to create an Apache vhost for each customer using their own domain? Is there an easier way with CNAME's to just have the customer point to the IP address of my server(s) that then forwards the request onto my application through some catch all vhost? Would I be able to create the CNAME record for the customer so they don't have to do any setup? Would this be a case better suited to Amazon Web Services? Any help or explanation or corrections on my understanding of dns would be appreciated. I'm a developer so the server ops portion of this is a bit cloudy.

• Ping isn't acting accurate?

  I've been trying to diagnose some latency issues with my internet connection. I've been lagging out of online video games and such, which of course could be their server's fault. So, I've been running ping some. It doesn't indicate anything unusual, but it does act a bit strange. I can start it with something like ping internethost -i 0.1 so that it will send a ton of packets, and every 10-20 seconds it will appear to just freeze for 2 or 3 seconds. The packets are still being received in the right order though, and there is no packet loss. The weirdest thing is that after the little freeze up, it will usually just report a ping time that is about 10-30ms higher than the average. How does this happen? Is ping still being accurate? I'm using Arch Linux. The host I'm pinging is my website, which shouldn't be doing any kind of ping slowing or filtering.

• ubuntu 12.04 not responding after software update

  Yesterday, I did a software update and since then the system became unusable. To be more precise, I login and then I see only the background image without any bars, images etc.. This happened after updating the system. Please find here the relevant part /var/log/apt/history.log. I'm running 64 bit 12.04 distribution on nVidia. The 2-3 first restarts after the upgrade it was complaining about compiz/unity crashes and then the situation is as described above. I would be the most grateful of you could help me on this. • Norton Security Suite Symantec Download Manager Error: "Error writing to disk"

  My broadband provider (Comcast) decided to switch their 'included with service' security suite from McAfee to Norton Security Suite. Their email directed me to a site that downloaded the Symantec Download Manager (NortonDL.exe) and that went fine. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and running this application pops up the standard User Account Control message and the software is correctly identified as coming from Symantec. I answer 'yes' to allow the software to install and upon launch immediately get an "Error writing to disk" error. I searched the Internet for this error, but mainly I find Comcast users complaining about the same issue with no resolution other than to call Symantec. I found no one suggesting a successful workaround and it appeared that most of the support calls took up to three hours. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Ideas? To be honest, I'm getting close to bagging this installation and just moving to Microsoft Security Essentials.

  I am working in a small company. I have joined here for java developer ,but they told as i am fresher so work as Android developer . Then i asked one of my lecturer about Android developement.then he replied why going for mobile developement which is not standard(as nokia's symbain lost , mobile os changes quickly ) its better to get job as Java Developer. By listening his words i was bit not satisfied with my job and thought of leaving Job and search as java developer. But i dont have much confidence to search a job at that time(because i got job after 1 and half years after i passed out), i have decided to work as android developer(as learning new technology and practice java at home). On the first day they introduced me to team leads and they assigned under him. After few days i came to know that my team lead is having only 1 year experience. He(my team lead) joined here as a fresher and done r&d now is my Team lead. If i ask any doubt to him , he just search in internet and reply's my question (some times he explains wrongly) i correct it by myself by searching in net.In my company they don't use latest technologies,they dont follow any design patterns because they dont know them. They provide me very less pay and more work, i dont bother about pay because i am fresher but i bother about work which is not use(I feel like that because they dont use latest technologies,no design patterns,no proper team lead) What i thought was to learn from the company, Team leads how the project done. But there I feel like, i am wasting my time.If i go for another interview in future they ask latest technologies. • Why does this monitor go to sleep but won't wake up, event though all related power options are turned off?

  We have a machine, Windows 7 (64-bit) with ASUS motherboard, in our building that only sometimes seems to go to sleep, but won't wake up. The machine is still running but shaking the mouse or hitting keys on the keyboard won't wake it up. I have tried for days to isolate the problem, but every time we get to a "let's try this" scenario, it happens again, later. All power options related to display being off are set to never, except the simple, "turn display off after..." setting. That is, the hard drive is set to never turn off, and the computer is set to never sleep nor hibernate. All drivers seem to be up to date, but I am afraid I will hose the machine if I do a BIOS update (plus I figured that will probably have nothing to do with the issue and only make something else break). Wasn't sure if there was something obvious I was missing?

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the hardware virtualization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that I need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? Is there another way besides from the startup?

  Hypothetical here, but I want to understand. Say I have a hand me down machine, 4 PCI slots, 64-bit 33 MHz PCI. How much data can that PCI bus handle? System bus is 133 MHz. I want to use one slot for a SATA II card, and the rest for Gig-E cards, building out as fast a NAS as I can. I think one slot may be AGP2x, so that leaves me 2 for Gig-E and one for SATAT II. Will I saturate, what is the max bandwidth of the PCI bus?

I put that up late last night then had a look at the analytics and found that I am seeing only the request uri portion of the URLs in analytics as I would with any other site only with this one it's a problem as winnipeg.mb.apartmentjunkie.com/map/ and brandon.mb.apartmentjunkie.com/map/ are two different pages and shouldn't be lumped together as /map/ I know the kneejerk response is likely going to be "hey just setup a different google analytics profile for each subdomain" but there will eventually be a lot of subdomains so google's cap of 50 is going to be too limited and even more important I want to see the data in aggregate for the most part. I am thinking of making a change to the javascript, to something like: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview',String(document.domain) + String(document.location)]); But am unsure if this is the best way and figured someone else on wm.se would have had a similar situation that they could talk a bit about.

  I'm running a SAMBA file store for our Windows users, and I'd like to automatically generate windows LNK files linking to other network shares that the user needs access to. I've done quite a bit of googling and I can't find a way of creating windows links on Linux, or through Perl. I did find a perl module that looked promising in CPAN, but it will only run on Windows unfortunately. If it's not possible to create .LNK files, perhaps there is an alternative solution people can suggest to allow the users to click on a file in one SAMBA store to be linked to a different SAMBA share?   I am a beginner in Android and I want to create a very simple 2D game. I've already programmed a Tic-Tac-Toe game. The drawing of the game board and connecting it with my game and input logic was quite difficult (as it was done separately, canvas drawing, calculating positions, etc). By now I figured out that there must be a simpler way. All I want is a simple grid; something like this: http://www.blelb.com/deutsch/blelbspots/spot29/images/hermannneg.gif. The edges should be visible and black, and each cell editable, containing either an image or nothing, so I can detect if the player is on that cell or not, move it... Think of it as Chess or something similar. Searching the internet during the last days, I am a bit overwhelmed of all the different options. After all, I think Gridview or Gridlayout is what I am searching for, but I'm still stuck. I hope you can help me with some good advice or maybe a link to a nice tutorial. I have checked several already, and none were exactly what I was searching for.

• How to disallow use of disable_functions in?

  I'm obviously not the first one to have this problem, but I cannot not find an answer to this situation. I want to lock down PHP a bit, more specifically the use disable_functions. The environment is CentOS 6.2/PHP 5.3.3 fcgid/Apache 2.2.15: Whats the proper apache config (AllowOverride, etc) to disable any PHP setting to be changed via .htaccess? All other overrides are ok (current setting is AllowOverride All) Whats the proper config to forbid effective use of disable_functions in all but the master php.ini (as in forbid use of disable_functions in /home/myvhost/etc/php5/php.ini or any directory within in that vhost public_html. another way to say this: the only effective disable_functions comes from the master php.ini)? If #2 is not possible, at least whats the proper config to disallow a vhost owner to effectively use any php.ini but the vhost main one (/home/myvhost/etc/php5/php.ini)? Thanks

• Copying 500GB Data to EC2 Instances Local Drive

  Please do not ask me why (they made me) but I have to copy 500GB data to the local drive every 200 node/instances that I am launching in EC2. For reasons beyond this post, this data must by on the local drive and not EBS drive so I can not benefit from snapshots. What is the fastest way that I can manage to this? Copying from S3 to each node takes a long time. I trying to attached an EBS volume to every node with the data and then copy the data from EBS to the local drive but that also take a long time (several hours_) Now, I am also thinking to use bit torrent but not sure how well it is going to be. What is the best way to copy 500GB of static data to each local drive of 200 ec2 instances? The 500Gb of data is composed several hundred of file with varying size but the biggest file is 20GB.

• How Do Nautilus Album Art Thumbnails work?

  There's something for which I've been searching an answer for a while now, but to no avail, and it's strange to me, as it seems like a thing that people would talk about: one of those nice little nonsense that enhance the computing experience a little bit. Anyway. I have a fair music collection. I save all the songs as ogg files. All is fine, and I can listen to the files, but there's something weird with the files in Nautilus: some have icons displaying their album art, while others don't, and I just can't understand WHY. I read on this site today that it's a matter of embedding the album art to the file, but that's not true, as I embedded the album art to the files I wanted several times, to no avail. Furthermore, removing an embedded album art from a file didn't have any effect on those that ARE displaying the icons. So my question is: How does it work? Where does Nautilus (or Ubuntu, I don't know) get the picture from? How do I edit it? Thanks in advance! -Amir

• Mirror using apt-mirror and exclud certain sections/categories

  I'm currently using apt-mirror to create a local mirror of the debian repositories. As the mirrored repositories will be used only by machines destined to be headless servers and as an effort to reduce the current mirroring size (around 75GB), categories like games and possibly others will never be needed. How can I go about specifying (on the mirror.list perhaps?) what sections/categories I want to be excluded from the mirroring? Maybe a bit subjective, but apart from games what other sections/categories could be "safely" ignored from the mirroring for my environment purposes?   I'm trying to get Cyrus IMAP (v 2.2 on Ubuntu 9.04) setup and working, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting the login working correctly. I've created a mailbox for my test user "nrahl": cm user/nrahl and then created a password: $ saslpasswd2 nrahl I'm attempting to connect to the mailbox using Thunderbird. I'm using the machine's LAN IP address as the host, and "nrahl" as the username. It connects to the server and prompts me for the password. • Can't access my accelerated hard disk from msdos after installing linux on ssd cache

  I mistakenly installed Ubuntu on my ssd (forgot my PC actually came with one), when it detected a ~31GiB disk that it wanted to install to, I was a bit confused since I had brought out 30Gb in my primary disk for it, but I clicked continue. After installation, I tried to boot back into my Windows and it brought out some Intel Raid Disk Utility stuff saying I should disable acceleration on a disk something couldn't be found, I canceled it but whatever I tried, recovery tools, setups etc, I couldn't just access the drive which was apparently using the SSD as cache. Since then I've been stuck. I tried setting the 'raid' flag to the disk from 'gParted', still I couldn't. I tried the diskraid utility from windows recover disk, it said it couldn't detect any raid, diskpart sees the partition but doesn't see the volume, when I remove the raid flag, it sees the volume as one of raw type, and I can't access anything. I can however mount the drive from terminal in Ubuntu and access my files, but I don't have any backup media at the moment so I can do a factory re-install. Please how do I go about solving the issue, precisely I would like to know how to boot into the drive again. Thanks!

• Errors installing the Curl library with PHP/Apache/Windows

  I'm having a hell of a time getting Curl to work with PHP/Apache on my Windows XP 64-bit development box. I have PHP and Apache successfully installed, but when I tried to enable Curl I get the following error (twice) from PHP on Apache startup: "PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\php\ext\php_curl.dll' - The operating system cannot run %1." I did uncomment the correct line in PHP.ini. I did move the two DLLs (php_curl.dll and ssleay32.dll) into my PHO root, into my System32, even my apache root - but no matter where I put them, PHP can't find them. I keep getting the error above. Anyone have any idea how to remedy this?

• Cedarview drivers boot to a blank screen

  I'm following the tutorial following tutorial to get my Intel D2700DC motherboard's graphics working: http://daily.siebler.eu/2012/06/ubuntu-12-04-driver-for-intel-cedarview-atom-n2000-und-d2000-serie/ When I boot I'm getting a blank screen. I followed the tutorial and read all the comments. I've also tried: Install gdm and use this instead of lightdm (ubuntu default) sudo apt-get install gdm Remove previous pae kernel: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/11/remove-old-kernels-in-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot/ Reboot before adding cedarview packages. Have tried with and without the "video=LVDS-1:d" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable in /etc/default/grub I still get a blank screen. I am plugged into a HD screen through the HDMI and have tried the DVI connector also. I can see the grub menu, then a little of the loading and then 'No signal'.
