• Starting a VC++ .exe from MSAccess

  For a complex calculating problem we use an VC++ module (.exe). For the users we have build an ms Access application as userinterface. After input dthe calculating module should start and do its job. The result is again imported in Ms Access. However we work wit dBase files (.dbf) as datafiles. The calculating unit works fine by its own, but when access is running it wo'nt do its job. It will start-up when called from the Access module, but then generates errors or at least does not write correct results to a datatable. We cannot find the reason for this beheavior. Can anyone give us a tip?

  What are (based on experiences) best commercial libraries for developing NCPDP-based systems? Edit 2: Thanks to all for help! NCPDP (National Council for Prescription Drug Programs) is an standard for e-prescribing. It defines two formats for message transmission: binary and XML. Implementing XML is somehow easier because it is a standard format which in turn gives us more tooling options. The binary format has a very big specification and time-consuming to implement. I did not find an open source solution to work with. So I am looking for commercial alternatives. Edit 1: Please guide me; what's wrong with this question?

• Different NSTimeZone names being returned

  I've noticed that on some devices the NSTimeZone's name method for a particular timezone can return different values. When testing the Brisbane time zone, my device returns @"Australia/Brisbane" whereas another user's device returns "Etc/GMT-10". Both iPhone's are running 3.1.2. The Date and Time Programming Guide for Cocoa states that: timeZoneWithName: The name passed to this method may be in any of the formats understood by the system, for example EST, Etc/GMT-2, America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires, Europe/Monaco, or US/Pacific, as shown in the following code fragment. I'd just like to know what could determine which value is used? The device? The language?

• Separating arguments to a function, in locales with comma as decimal marker

  In locales, e.g. French, with comma as decimal indicator (where "5,2" means five and two-tenths), how do users separate function arguments from each other? For example, in many programming/scripting languages, I could specify MAX(1.5, X) in a EN-US locale. How do you avoid the ambiguity between the comma as decimal indicator, and as argument separator? In particular, I'm interested in how software that's perceived as user-friendly in the foreign locale does it. Obviously, it's a no-brainer to say, "thou shalt use decimal POINTs", but that's not particularly "friendly".

  A lot of the answers to the questions about the accuracy of float and double recommend the use of decimal for monetary amounts. This works because today all currencies are decimal except MGA and MRO, and those have subunits of 1/5 so are still decimal-friendly. But what about the software used in U.S. stock markets when prices were in 1/16ths of dollar? The accuracy of binary data types wouldn't have been an issue, right? Going further back, how did pre-1971 British accounting software deal with pounds, shillings, and pence? Did their versions of COBOL have a special PIC clause for it? Were all amounts stored in pence? How was decimalisation handled?

  Hi All, I need to change the locale/language of the browse button in input type="file" We have a special function to change the locale of any text to the browser language such as en-US es-MX etc. Say changeLang("Test"); // This will display test in Spanish if the browser // locale is es-MX What I need to do is to change the language of the browse button. Since it is not displayed, I can't code it like changeLang("Browse..."); That's why I need to get the code of this input type and override so that I can apply my function to Browse text. • Performance logging tips

  I am developing large data collecting ASP.Net/Windows service application-pair that uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 through LINQ2Sql. Performance is always the issue. Currently the application is divided into multiple larger processing parts, each logging the duration of their work. This is not detailed and does not help us with anything. It would be nice to have some database tables that contain statistics that the application itself collected from its own behavior. What logging tips and data structures do you recommend to spot the parts that cause performance problems?

I'd like to compile a list/catalog of good questions, a kind of minimum standard to see if the applicants are experienced.   Our client wants to support both SQLServer and Oracle in the next project. Our experience comes from .NET/SQL Server platform. We will hire an Oracle developer, but our concern is with the DataAccess code. Will NHibernate make the DB Engine transparent for us?   What technique should we use to make the httpsession object not loaded heavily with data. Example : Request 1 ---- httpSession loaded with an arraylist of 50,000 different objects. session.setAttribute("data",arraylist); Request 2 ---- httpSession loaded with an arraylist of 40,000 different objects. session.setAttribute("data",arraylist); Assume the server is loaded heavily with multiple sessions and huge data in them. Let us say from my above example request1..1000 at a time. Which means 1000 session objects with huge data. What is the alternate way to solve instead storing them in session like this?

When called, it generate access violation exception. • Using LINQ to query database through a proxy server of some kind?

  Hey All Sorry for using (perhaps) the wrong lingo, but my question may be clearer if you view this diagram as you read it. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13256/DIAGRAM.PNG Our client is requiring us to adhere to the server configuration (poorly) diagrammed in the above image. The web server is accessible over port 80 and is where our web application is hosted - a second firewall permits this web server to access a second server which in turn is the only server permitted to access the database server. My question is: How do I deploy a web application that uses LINQ-to-SQL in this environment? Is there a way to proxy my LINQ queries through the app server so that the database connection goes through that server? This is uncharted territory for me, as we always have had access to the DB server directly from our web server in the past. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Mustafa

  We have a .NET application talking to Oracle 10g. Our DBA recently pulled a list of queries where executions is equal to parse_calls. We assumed that this would help us find all of the unparameterized queries in our code. Unexpectedly, the following query showed up near the top of this list, with 1,436,169 executions and 1,436,151 parses: SELECT bar.foocolumn FROM bartable bar, baztable baz WHERE bar.some_id = :someId AND baz.another_id = :anotherId AND baz.some_date BETWEEN bar.start_date AND (nvl(bar.end_date, baz.some_date + (1/84600)) - (1/84600)) Why is executions equal to parse_calls for this query?

• Trying to build automatic audio-conferencing capability into a WebApp

  Hey all, I'm working with a team of relatively novice programmers, and we are trying to create a site that will have audio-conferencing capabilities such that whenever someone visits the page, they will immediately have audio-conferencing capabilities with everyone else on the page (5 people max). Can anyone point us in a general direction? Should we be looking into building a custom app, leveraging audio conferencing software, or trying to mimic a webex program? Would Adobe Stratus be useful in getting this kind of functionality? Does anyone have any ideas about how we would design something like this on a macro level? • Maven: Unofficial artifact naming scheme?

  I'm creating some Maven artifacts for various dependencies for our projects, and while I'm taking my best guess at group / artifact IDs, I'd like to add something to flag them as "unofficial" and created by us for compilation, so that should we find official sources for the same thing in the future there's no confusion and we can simply change to point to the identifiers. Is there a best/common/reccomended practice for doing so? I was just thinking something like setting groupId="org.providername.unofficial", but since Maven's all about "doing it our way" I just want to see if there's a precedent for something different already...

These locations are listed in the Options dialog box, in the Environment node, on the Add-in/Macros Security page." I went to Tools Options Environment Add-In/Macro Security, checked some paths put the AddIn files in a couple of these directoryies, restart VS2010 but still no luck!

  Hi, My "Privacy Policy" page is seen more important by Google than other really more important pages on my website. I'm currently creating a script to generate a sitemap, should I bother with the priority? How do you effectively assign priorities to pages? I consider one of my page important but the page have less content than another one less important to my eyes... but maybe Google bot will see it the other way around. If my degree of "importantness" differs from the one of Google, will I get penalized on the ranking for a particular page? Thank you for sharing your black art with us :P

  Im having a little issue with setting up Multi Variant Tests in Google Website Optimizer. I wish to have two tests. One being which is a header banner which appears on every page and the conversion for example would be if the visitor lands on the contact us page. This was very easy to set up. However when I intend to add another test, again this will be on a element which appears on every page and the conversion page is if the visitor lands on the checkout page. But I am now having problems installing the control script. I get the error: Expected to find: }(function(){var k='0651116117',d=docum Found on line 7: (function(){var k='2666211118',d=docum Im assuming I have this error because I now have two control scripts in the header - one for each experiment. However I cannot combine each variation into just one experiment because each one is different and has a different conversion page? Please advise, thanks.

• Memory footprint of a parsed XML file in Classic ASP?

  Anyone know of a way to find out the amount of memory/size of a XMLDocument once it has parsed a XML file? I've been doing "beer mat" calculations so far but have been asked to come up with some more legit numbers through monitoring some how. I need to create about 1500 XML files (via FreeThreadedXMl-DOM object), which verge between 3-9K in size and store them in Application vars but our SysAdmin is worried about us gobbling up too much memory. Other than the crude method of booting up a fresh IIS instance and then loading everything in and monitoring before and after memory usage in Task Manager I can't think of a way of doing it with a bit more accuracy.

Surprisingly, I find that the most challenging task is to keep my website up & running. My site is being hacked again and again no matter what I do - I blocked the FTP connections, changed the Joomla (CMS) database table names, installed all latest patches and what not. The web site supports the product (over 1800 users now...) by generating licenses, support forums, documentation, galleries etc. The product which is a winforms application cannot be marketed without this web site. My question: Do you have any innovative idea about securing joomla based web sites or what is the best secured web hosting you know. currently i'm hosting my site at ixwebhosting and i like them very much but obviously i can't do any serious marketing being hacked over and over again Thank you very much, Adi Barda

• Recording Audio through RTMP/Rails

  I am in the process of building a rails/flex application which requires audio to be recorded and then stored in our amazon s3 account. I have found no alternative to using some form of RTMP server for recording audio through flash, but our hosting environment will not allow us to install anything like FMS, Red5, etc. Is there any existing Ruby/Rails RTMP solution that will allow audio recording? If not, is it possible for Rails to at least intercept the RTMP stream and then I can hope to reference red5 or something for parsing the data (long shot, I know)? The other alternative I can think of is hosting a red5 server on another host and communicating with our rails app once the saving/uploading is done, which is not preferred. Am I going to have any luck here?

• Jquery simplemodal close existing modal and open a new one?

  Alright, so all modals already have an image at the top right to close them. How can I make additionally another anchor to do the same thing? I thought I could use the "closeClass" option which default to "simplemodal-close" and just add that class to an anchor, but it didn't have the desired effect. Is that what I'm supposed to do? Also, all modals will have a "contact us" link which should close it's own modal and open the contact modal. How can I wait until it is closed to open the next one?   I'm considering using bundler for deploying a Spree app on Heroku. My question is, is bundler ready for prime time? I know there are some rough edges but I guess I'd like to know more about what the current limitations are and figure out if this is an option for us.
