  • Dynamic programming - Coin change decision problem?

    - by Tony
I'm reviewing some old notes from my algorithms course and the dynamic programming problems are seeming a bit tricky to me. I have a problem where we have an unlimited supply of coins, with some denominations x1, x2, ... xn and we want to make change for some value X. We are trying to design a dynamic program to decide whether change for X can be made or not (not minimizing the number of coins, or returning which coins, just true or false). I've done some thinking about this problem, and I can see a recursive method of doing this where it's something like... MakeChange(X, x[1..n this is the coins]) for (int i = 1; i < n; i++) { if ( (X - x[i] ==0) || MakeChange(X - x[i]) ) return true; } return false; Converting this a dynamic program is not coming so easily to me. How might I approach this?

  • Using JAXB to unmarshal/marshal a List<String> - Inheritance

    - by gerry
    I've build the following case. An interface for all JAXBLists: public interface JaxbList<T> { public abstract List<T> getList(); } And an base implementation: @XmlRootElement(name="list") public class JaxbBaseList<T> implements JaxbList<T>{ protected List<T> list; public JaxbBaseList(){} public JaxbBaseList(List<T> list){ this.list=list; } @XmlElement(name="item" ) public List<T> getList(){ return list; } } As well as an implementation for a list of URIs: @XmlRootElement(name="uris") public class JaxbUriList2 extends JaxbBaseList<String> { public JaxbUriList2() { super(); } public JaxbUriList2(List<String> list){ super(list); } @Override @XmlElement(name="uri") public List<String> getList() { return list; } } And I'm using the List in the following way: public JaxbList<String> init(@QueryParam("amount") int amount){ List<String> entityList = new Vector<String>(); ... enityList.add("http://uri"); ... return new JaxbUriList2(entityList); } I thought the output should be: <uris> <uri> http://uri </uri> ... </uris> But it is something like this: <uris> <item xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xsi:type="xs:string"> http://uri </item> ... <uri> http://uri </uri> ... </uris> I think it has something to do with the inheritance, but I don't get it... What's the problem? - How can I fix it? Thanks in advance!

  • Linq-to-SQL: Ignore null parameters from WHERE clause

    - by Peter Bridger
The query below should return records that either have a matching Id supplied in ownerGroupIds or that match ownerUserId. However is ownerUserId is null, I want this part of the query to be ignored. public static int NumberUnderReview(int? ownerUserId, List<int> ownerGroupIds) { return ( from c in db.Contacts where c.Active == true && c.LastReviewedOn <= DateTime.Now.AddDays(-365) && ( // Owned by user !ownerUserId.HasValue || c.OwnerUserId.Value == ownerUserId.Value ) && ( // Owned by group ownerGroupIds.Count == 0 || ownerGroupIds.Contains( c.OwnerGroupId.Value ) ) select c ).Count(); } However when a null is passed in for ownerUserId then I get the following error: Nullable object must have a value. I get a tingling I may have to use a lambda expression in this instance?

  • Android - Autocomplete with contacts

    - by The Salt
I've created an AutoCompleteTextView box that displays the names of all contacts, but after looking in the Android APIs, it seems my method is probably quite inefficient. Currently I am grabbing a cursor of the all the contacts, placing each name and each contact id into two different arrays, then passing the name array to the AutoCompleteTextView. When a user selects an item, I lookup which ID the contact selected in the second id array created above. Code below: private ContactNames mContactData; // Fill the autocomplete textbox Cursor contactsCursor = grabContacts(); mContactData = new ContactNames(contactsCursor); ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.contact_name, mContactData.namesArray); mNameText.setAdapter(adapter); private class ContactNames { private String[] namesArray; private long[] idsArray; private ContactNames(Cursor cur) { namesArray = new String[cur.getCount()]; idsArray = new long[cur.getCount()]; String name; Long contactid; // Get column id's int nameColumn = cur.getColumnIndex(People.NAME); int idColumn = cur.getColumnIndex(People._ID); int i=0; cur.moveToFirst(); // Check that there are actually any contacts returned by the cursor if (cur.getCount()>0){ do { // Get the field values name = cur.getString(nameColumn); contactid = Long.parseLong(cur.getString(idColumn)); // Do something with the values. namesArray[i] = name; idsArray[i] = contactid; i++; } while (cur.moveToNext()); } } private long search(String name){ // Lookup name in the contact list that we've put in an array int indexOfName = Arrays.binarySearch(namesArray, name); long contact = 0; if (indexOfName>=0) { contact = idsArray[indexOfName]; } return contact; } } private Cursor grabContacts(){ // Form an array specifying which columns to return. String[] projection = new String[] {People._ID, People.NAME}; // Get the base URI for the People table in the Contacts content provider. Uri contacts = People.CONTENT_URI; // Make the query. Cursor managedCursor = managedQuery(contacts, projection, null, null, People.NAME + " ASC"); // Put the results in ascending order by name startManagingCursor(managedCursor); return managedCursor; } There must be a better way of doing this - basically I'm struggling to see how I can find which item a user selected in an AutoCompleteTextView. Any ideas? Cheers.

  • Initializing a Global Struct in C

    - by Scott
What is the best way to accomplish the following in C? #include <stdio.h> struct A { int x; }; struct A createA(int x) { struct A a; a.x = x; return a; } struct A a = createA(42); int main(int argc, char** argv) { printf("%d\n", a.x); return 0; } When I try to compile the above code, the compiler reports the following error: "initializer element is not constant" The bad line is this one: struct A a = createA(42); Can someone explain what is wrong? I'm not very experienced in C. Thanks!

  • [Java] RSA BadPaddingException : data must start with zero

    - by Robin Monjo
Hello everyone. I try to implement an RSA algorithm in a Java program. I am facing the "BadPaddingException : data must start with zero". Here are the methods used to encrypt and decrypt my data : public byte[] encrypt(byte[] input) throws Exception { Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("RSA/ECB/PKCS1Padding");// cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, this.publicKey); return cipher.doFinal(input); } public byte[] decrypt(byte[] input) throws Exception { Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("RSA/ECB/PKCS1Padding");/// cipher.init(Cipher.DECRYPT_MODE, this.privateKey); return cipher.doFinal(input); } privateKey and publicKey attributes are read from files this way : public PrivateKey readPrivKeyFromFile(String keyFileName) throws IOException { PrivateKey key = null; try { FileInputStream fin = new FileInputStream(keyFileName); ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(fin); BigInteger m = (BigInteger) ois.readObject(); BigInteger e = (BigInteger) ois.readObject(); RSAPrivateKeySpec keySpec = new RSAPrivateKeySpec(m, e); KeyFactory fact = KeyFactory.getInstance("RSA"); key = fact.generatePrivate(keySpec); ois.close(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } return key; } Private key and Public key are created this way : public void Initialize() throws Exception { KeyPairGenerator keygen = KeyPairGenerator.getInstance("RSA"); keygen.initialize(2048); keyPair = keygen.generateKeyPair(); KeyFactory fact = KeyFactory.getInstance("RSA"); RSAPublicKeySpec pub = fact.getKeySpec(keyPair.getPublic(), RSAPublicKeySpec.class); RSAPrivateKeySpec priv = fact.getKeySpec(keyPair.getPrivate(), RSAPrivateKeySpec.class); saveToFile("public.key", pub.getModulus(), pub.getPublicExponent()); saveToFile("private.key", priv.getModulus(), priv.getPrivateExponent()); } and then saved in files : public void saveToFile(String fileName, BigInteger mod, BigInteger exp) throws IOException { FileOutputStream f = new FileOutputStream(fileName); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(f); oos.writeObject(mod); oos.writeObject(exp); oos.close(); } I can't figured out how the problem come from. Any help would be appreciate ! Thanks in advance.

  • Managing database connections in an Android Activity

    - by Daniel Lew
I have an application with a ListActivity that uses a CursorAdapter as its adapter. The ListActivity opens the database and does the querying for the CursorAdapter, which is all well and good, but I am having issues with figuring out when to close both the Cursor and the SQLiteDatabase. The way things are handled right now, if the user finishes the activity, I close the database and the cursor. However, this still ends up with the DalvikVM warning me that I've left a database open - for example, if the user hits the "home" button (leaving the activity in the task's stack), rather than the "back" button. If I close them during pause and then re-query during resume, then I don't get any errors, but then a user cannot return to the list without it requerying (and thus losing the user's place in the list). By this I mean, the user can click on any item in the list and open a new activity based on it, but will often want to hit "back" afterwards and return to the same place on the list. If I requery, then I cannot return the user back to the correct spot. What is the proper way to handle this issue? I want the list to remain scrolled properly, but I don't want the VM to keep complaining about unclosed databases. Edit: Here's a general outline of how I handle the code at the moment: public class MyListActivity extends ListActivity { private Cursor mCursor; private CursorAdapter mAdapter; protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); mAdapter = new MyCursorAdapter(this); setListAdapter(mAdapter); } protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); if (isFinishing()) { mCursor.close(); } } protected void onDestroy() { super.onDestroy(); mCursor.close(); } private void updateQuery() { // If we had a cursor open before, close it. if (mCursor != null) { mCursor.close(); } MyDbHelper dbHelper = new MyDbHelper(this); SQLiteDatabase db = dbHelper.getReadableDatabase(); mCursor = db.query(...); mAdapter.changeCursor(mCursor); db.close(); } } updateQuery() can be called multiple times because the user can filter the results via menu items (I left this part out of the code, as the problem still occurs even if the user does no filtering). Again, the issue is that when I hit home I get leak errors. Yet, after going home, I can go back to the app and find my list again - cursor fully intact.

  • Can I get the "value" of an arbitrary statement in JavaScript (like eval does, but without eval)

    - by tlrobinson
In JavaScript is there a way to get the "value" of a statement in the same way that function() { return eval("if (true) { 1 }"); } returns "1"; function() { return if (true) { 1 } } and all similar permutations I've tried are not valid syntax. Is eval just blessed with special powers to determine the "last" value of a statement in an expression? Use case is a REPL that evaluates arbitrary expressions and returns the result. eval works, but I want to wrap it in function.

  • How to get a list of groups in an Active Directory group

    - by Douglas Anderson
I'm trying to get a list of the groups that are in an AD group using .NET. As an example, I have a group called TestGroup and inside that group I have the group DomainAdministrators. Using the code below I can get all of the users including those from the DomainAdministrators group but not the group itself. PrincipalContext ctx = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, "DomainName"); GroupPrincipal grp = GroupPrincipal.FindByIdentity(ctx, IdentityType.Name, "TestGroup"); ArrayList members = new ArrayList(); if (grp != null) { foreach (Principal p in grp.GetMembers(true)) { members.Add(p.Name) } } grp.Dispose(); ctx.Dispose(); Instead of GetMembers I've tried GetGroups but that doesn't return anything. How can I return the groups in the group?

  • Spring MVC Controller redirect using URL parameters instead of in response.

    - by predhme
I am trying to implement RESTful urls in my Spring MVC application. All is well except for handling form submissions. I need to redirect either back to the original form or to a "success" page. @Controller @RequestMapping("/form") public class MyController { @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.GET) public String setupForm() { // do my stuff return "myform"; } @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.POST) public String processForm(ModelMap model) { // process form data model.addAttribute("notification", "Successfully did it!"); return "redirect:/form"; } } However as I read in the Spring documentation, if you redirect any parameters will be put into the url. And that doesn't work for me. What would be the most graceful way around this?

  • jquery cycle "allowPagerClickBubble: true" not quite working

    - by Shelagh
Hi all, I want my page anchors to work as menu links so I used this code: $(function() { $('#slideshow').cycle({ slideExpr: 'img', fx: 'fade', speed: 2000, timeout: 4000, pager: '#nav', pagerEvent: 'mouseover', pauseOnPagerHover: true, pagerAnchorBuilder: function(idx, slide) { // return sel string for existing anchor return '#nav li:eq(' + (idx) + ') a'; }, allowPagerClickBubble: true }); }); If you click the right mouse button, you can choose to open the links and they do open just fine but a normal left button click does nothing. The thing is, they WERE working so I went to work on supposedly unrelated parts of the website and at some point the left mouse button click stopped working. Any ideas what I might have done? Left button clicking still works for everything else on the site so its not some global setting. The cycle is here if my explanation is not clear: http://www.mcguirenaturals.ca/index.php Thanks for any help

  • Argument exception after trying to use TryGetObjectByKey

    - by Rickjaah
Hi, I'm trying to retrieve an object from my database using entity (framework 4) When I use the following code it gives an ArgumentException: An item with the same key has already been added. if (databaseContext.TryGetObjectByKey(entityKey, out result)) { return (result != null && result is TEntityObject) ? result as TEntityObject : null; } else { return null; } When I check the objectContext, I see the entities, but only if I enumerate the specific list of entities manually using VS2010, it works. What am I missing? Do I have to do something else before i can get the item from the database? I have lazy loading set to true. I searched google, but could not find any results, the same for the msdn library

  • m2eclipse: Eclipse is running in a JRE, but a JDK is required

    - by GernoK
Hello, I have a problem with m2eclipse (0.10.0) together with eclipse galileo (Build id: 20090920-1017). I always get the error message:"Eclipse is running in a JRE, but a JDK is required". I have tried several things, but nothing works. The error message is still there. Here are the things I have tried: In WindowPreferencesJavaInstalled JREs I checked JDK1.6.0_20. DOES NOT WORK In WindowPreferencesJavaInstalled JREs I removed all JREs. Only the checked JDK1.6.0_20 is still there. DOES NOT WORK In WindowPreferencesJavaInstalled JREsExecution Environments I choosed JavaSE-1.6 and checked JDK1.6.0_20[perfect match]. DOES NOT WORK. In Preferences of the eclipse desktop start icon I added the -vm parameter (C:\Programme\eclipse_galileo\eclipse\eclipse.exe -vm C:\Programme\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin). DOES NOT WORK. I added the clean parameter (C:\Programme\eclipse_galileo\eclipse\eclipse.exe -vm C:\Programme\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin -clean). DOES NOT WORK. I added the -vm parameter to the eclipse.ini file with a carriage return after -vm and C:/Programme/Java/jdk1.6.0_20/bin/javaw.exe in a new line. DOES NOT WORK. After doing all these things I removed the m2eclipse plugin and installed it once again. DOES NOT WORK. New ideas I have tried: In Preferences of the eclipse desktop start icon I put the executable at the end (C:\Programme\eclipse_galileo\eclipse\eclipse.exe -vm C:\Programme\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin\javaw.exe). DOES NOT WORK. I changed in eclipse.ini the slashes to backslashes. DOES NOT WORK. Here is my eclipse.ini file: -startup plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.201.R35x_v20090715.jar --launcher.library plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.win32.win32.x86_1.0.200.v20090519 -product org.eclipse.epp.package.jee.product --launcher.XXMaxPermSize 256M -showsplash org.eclipse.platform --launcher.XXMaxPermSize 256m -vm C:\Programme\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin\javaw.exe -vmargs -Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5 -Xms40m -Xmx512m Is anyone out there who have other ideas? • django admin: Add a "remove file" field for Image- or FileFields

    - by w-
I was hunting around the net for a way to easily allow users to blank out imagefield/filefields they have set in the admin. I found this http://www.djangosnippets.org/snippets/894/ What was really interesting to me here was the code posted in the comment by rfugger remove_the_file = forms.BooleanField(required=False) def save(self, *args, **kwargs): object = super(self.__class__, self).save(*args, **kwargs) if self.cleaned_data.get('remove_the_file'): object.the_file = '' return object When i try to use this in my own form I basically added this to my admin.py which already had a BlahAdmin class BlahModelForm(forms.ModelForm): class Meta: model = Blah remove_img01 = forms.BooleanField(required=False) def save(self, *args, **kwargs): object = super(self.__class__, self).save(*args, **kwargs) if self.cleaned_data.get('remove_img01'): object.img01 = '' return object when i run it I get this error maximum recursion depth exceeded while calling a Python object at this line object = super(self.__class__, self).save(*args, **kwargs) When i think about it for a bit, it seems obvious that it is just infinitely calling itself causing the error. My problem is i can't figure out what is the correct way i should be doing this. Any suggestions? thanks

  • How to use Bouncy Castle lightweight API with AES and PBE

    - by Adrian
    I have a block of ciphertext that was created using the JCE algorithim "PBEWithSHA256And256BitAES-CBC-BC". The provider is BouncyCastle. What I'd like to do it decrypt this ciphertext using the BouncyCastle lightweight API. I don't want to use JCE because that requires installing the Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files. Documentation seems to be thin on the ground when it comes to using BC with PBE and AES. Here's what I have so far. The decryption code runs without exception but returns rubbish. The encryption code, String password = "qwerty"; String plainText = "hello world"; byte[] salt = generateSalt(); byte[] cipherText = encrypt(plainText, password.toCharArray(), salt); private static byte[] generateSalt() throws NoSuchAlgorithmException { byte salt[] = new byte[8]; SecureRandom saltGen = SecureRandom.getInstance("SHA1PRNG"); saltGen.nextBytes(salt); return salt; } private static byte[] encrypt(String plainText, char[] password, byte[] salt) throws NoSuchAlgorithmException, InvalidKeySpecException, NoSuchPaddingException, InvalidKeyException, InvalidAlgorithmParameterException, IllegalBlockSizeException, BadPaddingException { Security.addProvider(new BouncyCastleProvider()); PBEParameterSpec pbeParamSpec = new PBEParameterSpec(salt, 20); PBEKeySpec pbeKeySpec = new PBEKeySpec(password); SecretKeyFactory keyFac = SecretKeyFactory.getInstance("PBEWithSHA256And256BitAES-CBC-BC"); SecretKey pbeKey = keyFac.generateSecret(pbeKeySpec); Cipher encryptionCipher = Cipher.getInstance("PBEWithSHA256And256BitAES-CBC-BC"); encryptionCipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, pbeKey, pbeParamSpec); return encryptionCipher.doFinal(plainText.getBytes()); } The decryption code, byte[] decryptedText = decrypt(cipherText, password.getBytes(), salt); private static byte[] decrypt(byte[] cipherText, byte[] password, byte[] salt) throws DataLengthException, IllegalStateException, InvalidCipherTextException, InvalidKeyException, NoSuchAlgorithmException, NoSuchPaddingException, IllegalBlockSizeException, BadPaddingException { BlockCipher engine = new AESEngine(); CBCBlockCipher cipher = new CBCBlockCipher(engine); PKCS5S1ParametersGenerator keyGenerator = new PKCS5S1ParametersGenerator(new SHA256Digest()); keyGenerator.init(password, salt, 20); CipherParameters keyParams = keyGenerator.generateDerivedParameters(256); cipher.init(false, keyParams); byte[] decryptedBytes = new byte[cipherText.length]; int numBytesCopied = cipher.processBlock(cipherText, 0, decryptedBytes, 0); return decryptedBytes; }

  • Scipy interpolation on a numpy array

Scipy.interpolate() should interpolate to determine the correct value. Currently, the only way i can do this is with a bunch of if/elifs as exemplified below. I'm pretty sure there is a better, more efficient way of doing this Here's what i've got so far import numpy as np from scipy import interplate if (ua == 1): if (inc <= low_inc): #low_inc = 10,000 if (hh <= 1): return TR_ua1[0][0] elif (hh >= 1 & hh < 2): return interpolate( (1,2), (TR_ua1[0][1], TR_ua1[0][2]) )

  • Properly clean up excel interop objects revisited: Wrapper objects

    - by chiccodoro
Hi all, Excel 2007 Hangs When Closing via .NET How to properly clean up Excel interop objects in C# How to properly clean up interop objects in C# All of these struggle with the problem that C# does not release the Excel COM objects properly after using them. There are mainly two directions of working around this issue: Kill the Excel process when Excel is not used anymore. Take care to assign each COM object used explicitly to a variable and to Marshal.ReleaseComObject all of these. Some have stated that 2 is too tedious and there is always some uncertainty whether you forget to stick to this rule at some places in the code. Still 1 seems dirty and dangerous to me, also I could imagine that in an environment with restricted access killing processes is not allowed. So I've been thinking about solving 2 by creating another proxy object model which mimics the Excel object model (for me, it would suffice to implement the objects I actually need). The principle would look as follows: Each Excel Interop class has its proxy which wraps an object of that class. The proxy releases the COM object in its destructor. The proxy mimics the interface of the Interop class (maybe by inheriting it). Any methods that usually return another COM object return a proxy instead. The other methods simply delegate the implementation to the inner COM object. This is a rough sketch of the code: public class Application : Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application { private Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application innerApplication = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application innerApplication(); ~Application() { Marshal.ReleaseCOMObject(innerApplication); } public Workbooks Workbooks { get { return new Workbooks(innerApplication.Workbooks); } } } public class Workbooks { private Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Workbooks innerWorkbooks; Workbooks(Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Workbooks innerWorkbooks) { this.innerWorkbooks = innerWorkbooks; } ~Workbooks() { Marshal.ReleaseCOMObject(innerWorkbooks); } } My questions to you are in particular: Who finds this a bad idea and why? Who finds this a gread idea? If so, why hasn't anybody implemented/published such a model yet? Just due to the effort, or am I missing a killing problem with that idea? Is it impossible/bad/dangerous to do the ReleaseCOMObject in the destructor? (I've only seen proposals to put it in a Dispose() rather than in a destructor - why?) If the approach makes sense, any suggestions to improve it?

  • help me understand the following javascript relate to AsyncFileUpload control

    - by sean717
Hi, in my current project I used a AsyncFileUpload control from AJAX Control Toolkits. After I got the async file upload part working, I needed to filter the file type so users can only upload image files. I found the following code off web and it worked well: function uploadStarted(sender, args) { var filename = args.get_fileName(); var filext = filename.substring(filename.lastIndexOf(".") + 1); if (filext == "jpg" || filext == "jpeg" || filext == "gif" || filext == "bmp") { return true; } else { // force uploading cancel args.set_cancel(true); // set reason of cancel args.set_errorMessage("Invalid File Format Selected"); return false; } } The problem is : I don't understand this javascript. What is the type of args parameter? Where are the methods such as "get_fileName()", "set_cancel()" defined? I went to the homepage of the AsyncFileUpload control but couldn't find any documentation regarding the "args". Can someone help me out explaining this Javascript? Thanks

  • System.Security.VerificationException: Operation could destabilize the runtime

    - by Rigobert Song
I have a web service which is queried using linq to sql but returns an array of objects. I keep getting the following error: System.Security.VerificationException: Operation could destabilize the runtime When I run a method that uses a linq statement to return an array I get this error, but only on my test server, which is windows server 2008. Everything works fine in my win 7 machine. The project is a .net 3.5. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks UPDATE: My linq queries return IQueryable.

  • Why does this render as a list of "System.Web.Mvc.SelectListItem"s?

    - by JMT
I'm trying to populate a DropDownList with values pulled from a property, and my end result right now is a list of nothing but "System.Web.Mvc.SelectListItem"s. I'm sure there's some minor step I'm omitting here, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is. The property GET generating the list: public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> AllFoo { get { var foo = from g in Bar orderby g.name select new SelectListItem { Value = g.fooid.ToString(), Text = g.name }; return foo.AsEnumerable(); } } The controller code: public ActionResult Edit(string id) { // n/a code ViewData["fooList"] = new SelectList(g.AllFoo, g.fooid); return View(model); } The view code: <%= Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.fooid, ViewData["fooList"] as SelectList) %>
