• Can I theme the menubar to look different if a window is maximized?

  I know you can theme the Unity menubar in GTK+3 using CSS, but is there a way to theme it differently depending on whether a window is maximized? This would be useful for e.g. themes where the menubar should appear standalone in the absence of a maximized window, but then seamlessly blend into the top of such a window when there is one. Preferably, I would like to be able to do this from within the theme files.

• Easy Server-Side Language

  Most of programming languages (Server-side languages for web development) needs a learning curve and requires some time to learn. However, I'm sure there is a difference between them. So, for example you can master the 'X' language in less time than the 'Y' language. I'm a beginner in web development, meaning that I just know HTML and CSS and now want to choose the right tool for building dynamic sites. What I'm looking for is a language that is easy to master in less time than other languages. So, is there a language that can suit my needs? If so, please let me know about what should I learn in it? (for example, which frameworks?, libraries?, IDEs?, databases?, etc). In the end, I don't want to regret my choice of the language and want to learn solid basics in it and in programming in general.

I love using DreamWeaver as I can handle, HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript using DreamWeaver. While learning online, I have seen many other configurations like using Eclipse and other tools. I wanted to ask if using Dreamweaver to write PHP code a good practice or it can be made better using any other code writing tool?

• Cross-Platform Automated Mobile Application UI Testing

  My dissertation is about developing a tool for testing mobile applications from the GUI. Primary device is Android, but it should support Blackberry or iOs etc. I found some frameworks using Google, e.g MonkeyTalk. I am not so sure, but what I want to develop might be a mini MonkeyTalk, with minimal functionality, focused on the GUI of the application(s) to be tested. My questions: What framework(s)? I am good with Java. Can I use the xUnit family for this, and how? What should I be reading/studying? Any suggestions, links for tutorials, documentations, howtos, etc., would be very helpful. • Going from webforms, VS 2008, 3.5 framework to the "next level" based on my goals

  I've got a few choices to make as I develop some business websites that will run for the next two to three years. Currently I run ASP.NET 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008. I do my development rather crudely in WebForms because that's what I learned and am most productive with. I don't use Membership or any other frameworks in my projects. I use a simple class that maintains a few session keys for each user based on basic database tables for users and roles. (I have about 3,000 users). So far I've kept the data simple, using ADO.NET against SQL Server and a data access class (Circa 2000, I know) to build my sites. My questions are as follows: Under what conditions would I be better off moving to MVC? Under what conditions would I find LINQ and ORM a better way to go than standard ADO.NET? Would I benefit, in my current state of development, from going from Studio 2008 to Studio 2010?

  I am building a very small e-commerce site, and I need a free and simple to use/deploy/integrate shopping cart that I can add into my website in order to be able to sell a FEW items. I want the shopping cart to be an add-on in my website, nothing fancy.Ideally when a person clicks on the "Add to cart" button, they will be redirected to the shopping cart, which will then handle different types of payment methods, and everything else you would expect from a fully working shopping cart. I am currently developing my website using the following tools/frameworks: SQL Server 2008 R2 Visual Studio 2010 (ASP.NET 4.5 - C#) HTML5,CSS3, and JS.   I have developed my own little framework for webpages. And for different websites I had to change some parts of the framework respectively developed new features / improvements. But in some cases I missed to copy the changes in the original framework code. How do you manage your frameworks? I copy the complete framework to a library folder in my projects folder structure. So I have a copy of the framework in every project. I would like to have it on one place in order to modify / improve / bugfix it once and then distribute it on the projects.

• How to get experience in large scale databases?

  I have written applications that are very small scale and the code I write works fine for them. But I have often wondered how the server side code I write would scale up from 100s of queries per day to millions. Also when looking at possible jobs/projects, people are often looking for developers with experience in this sort of high traffic database design so I would at least like to be able to say, I havent gotten to work on a project that was this popular, but I at least have tried to simulate it. Are there tools or frameworks that can generate a lot of traffic or at least simulate what would happen with traffic on different orders of magnitude so I could get some practice writing optimized code for higher traffic applicaitons?

• What do you do when working with multiple languages with different capitalization schemes?

  I'm making a webapp using Django. The Python convention for naming variables is lowercase_with_underscores, but the Javascript convention is camelCase. In addition, I've seen many people use lowercase-with-hyphens for CSS identifiers. Would you suggest using all three naming conventions where appropriate, or picking one and using it, even if the other two recommend something else? Switching back and forth isn't a huge problem, but it can still be mental overhead.

  No matter what frameworks we use -- Core Graphics, Cocos2D, OpenGL ES -- to write games, should a timer be used (for games that has animation even when a user doesn't do any input, such as after firing a missile and waiting to see if the UFO is hit)? I read that NSTimer might not get fired until after scheduled time (interval), and CADisplayLink can delay and get fired at a later time as well, only that it tells you how late it is so you can move the object more, so it can make the object look like it skipped frame. Must we use a Timer? And if so, what is the best one to use?

• Should I use a unit testing framework to validate XML documents?

I'm using an XML Schema (XSD) to validate several large XML documents. While I'm finding plenty of support within XSD for checking the structure of my documents, there are no procedural if/else features that allow me to say, for instance, If Country is USA, then Zipcode cannot be empty. I'm comfortable using unit testing frameworks, and could quite happily use a framework to test content integrity. Am I asking for trouble doing it this way, rather than an alternative approach? Has anybody tried this with good / bad results? -- Edit: I didn't include this information to keep it technology agnostic, but I would be using C# / Linq / xUnit for deserialization / testing.

• What is the point in using real time?

  I understand that using real time frame elapses (which should vary between 16-17ms on average) are provided by a lot of frameworks. GetTimeElapsedSinceLastFrame, and it gives you the wall clock time. But should we use this information in basic physics simulation? It looks to me to be a bad idea. Say there is a slight lag on the machine, for whatever reason (say a virus scanner starts up). The calculations all jump, and there is no need for this. Why not use a virtual second and ignore wall clock time? For gameplay on the level of Commander Keen, shouldn't you always use the virtual second and not real-time? (Besides stopwatch timing for race games) I don't see a need to use real time and not a fixed 16ms time step.
