• How to Disable Touchpad tap in Toshiba Tecra R850 in Oneiric

  I know there's a lot of similar questions, but nothing I have tried here works yet - perhaps I was doing it wrong. New Laptop - Toshiba Tecra R850 with an install of Oneiric. Mostly things are working well, but I have a problem with the touchpad (or whatever it's called) - whenever I use it for moving the mouse pointer I accidentally tap on it - basically I am clicking all over the place by accident. So I want to disable the tap-as-click (after all, I have buttons for clicks too). I open up "Mouse and Touchpad" and on the Touchpad tab I check "Disable touchpad when typing" and UNcheck "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad". This does not achieve anything. The only piece of code I had which worked at all was to completely disable the touchpad by removing the driver - but that is no use since I WANT the mousing ability, just not the tap. In fact, even that would be good if I could still use the little blue stick thing and the other buttons - but it disabled them too. Tried installing touchpad indicator but it didn't seem to want to install. There were suggestions to put stuff into /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d so I edited 50-synaptics.conf and added the line Option "TapButton1" "0" But it didn't work and I'm not surprised since the place, syntax and values were all a guess really... • JavaScript Intellisense Improvements with VS 2010

  This is the twentieth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release.  Today’s blog post covers some of the nice improvements coming with JavaScript intellisense with VS 2010 and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express.  You’ll find with VS 2010 that JavaScript Intellisense loads much faster for large script files and with large libraries, and that it now provides statement completion support for more advanced scenarios compared to previous versions of Visual Studio. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Improved JavaScript Intellisense Providing Intellisense for a dynamic language like JavaScript is more involved than doing so with a statically typed language like VB or C#.  Correctly inferring the shape and structure of variables, methods, etc is pretty much impossible without pseudo-executing the actual code itself – since JavaScript as a language is flexible enough to dynamically modify and morph these things at runtime.  VS 2010’s JavaScript code editor now has the smarts to perform this type of pseudo-code execution as you type – which is how its intellisense completion is kept accurate and complete.  Below is a simple walkthrough that shows off how rich and flexible it is with the final release. Scenario 1: Basic Type Inference When you declare a variable in JavaScript you do not have to declare its type.  Instead, the type of the variable is based on the value assigned to it.  Because VS 2010 pseudo-executes the code within the editor, it can dynamically infer the type of a variable, and provide the appropriate code intellisense based on the value assigned to a variable. For example, notice below how VS 2010 provides statement completion for a string (because we assigned a string to the “foo” variable): If we later assign a numeric value to “foo” the statement completion (after this assignment) automatically changes to provide intellisense for a number: Scenario 2: Intellisense When Manipulating Browser Objects It is pretty common with JavaScript to manipulate the DOM of a page, as well as work against browser objects available on the client.  Previous versions of Visual Studio would provide JavaScript statement completion against the standard browser objects – but didn’t provide much help with more advanced scenarios (like creating dynamic variables and methods).  VS 2010’s pseudo-execution of code within the editor now allows us to provide rich intellisense for a much broader set of scenarios. For example, below we are using the browser’s window object to create a global variable named “bar”.  Notice how we can now get intellisense (with correct type inference for a string) with VS 2010 when we later try and use it: When we assign the “bar” variable as a number (instead of as a string) the VS 2010 intellisense engine correctly infers its type and modifies statement completion appropriately to be that of a number instead: Scenario 3: Showing Off Because VS 2010 is psudo-executing code within the editor, it is able to handle a bunch of scenarios (both practical and wacky) that you throw at it – and is still able to provide accurate type inference and intellisense. For example, below we are using a for-loop and the browser’s window object to dynamically create and name multiple dynamic variables (bar1, bar2, bar3…bar9).  Notice how the editor’s intellisense engine identifies and provides statement completion for them: Because variables added via the browser’s window object are also global variables – they also now show up in the global variable intellisense drop-down as well: Better yet – type inference is still fully supported.  So if we assign a string to a dynamically named variable we will get type inference for a string.  If we assign a number we’ll get type inference for a number.  Just for fun (and to show off!) we could adjust our for-loop to assign a string for even numbered variables (bar2, bar4, bar6, etc) and assign a number for odd numbered variables (bar1, bar3, bar5, etc): Notice above how we get statement completion for a string for the “bar2” variable.  Notice below how for “bar1” we get statement completion for a number:   This isn’t just a cool pet trick While the above example is a bit contrived, the approach of dynamically creating variables, methods and event handlers on the fly is pretty common with many Javascript libraries.  Many of the more popular libraries use these techniques to keep the size of script library downloads as small as possible.  VS 2010’s support for parsing and pseudo-executing libraries that use these techniques ensures that you get better code Intellisense out of the box when programming against them. Summary Visual Studio 2010 (and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express) now provide much richer JavaScript intellisense support.  This support works with pretty much all popular JavaScript libraries.  It should help provide a much better development experience when coding client-side JavaScript and enabling AJAX scenarios within your ASP.NET applications. • Driverless printer sharing on Windows.

  I have a printer hooked up to a computer running Windows XP. It prints fine from that computer, but I'd like to set up other computers (running Vista and 7) to print from it as well. I tried setting up printer sharing, but it wouldn't work because the client computers needed to install the print driver as well. (The driver itself has been discontinued and there's no version for Vista or 7.) Is there some (hopefully free) software I can install to, say, add a virtual printer that sends the data to a host computer to print it, rather then having to directly access the printer over the network via the Windows printer sharing model?

• How to boot Snow Leopard without Rebel EFI?

  I have Mac OSX 10.5.7 on one hdd and I want to install Snow Leopard 10.6 so I attach another hdd, format it with GUID, and then boot my system using free Rebel EFI disc, then I install the Snow Leopard but in the end the setup fails. When I restart the PC and boot using Rebel EFI it shows Snow Leopard installed. So I boot that in safe mode and it started. My problem is I cannot boot it into safe mode because I have Chameleon already installed for 10.5.7 and in the Chameleon I can not see any option to boot into safe mode? So does someone know how do I boot Snow Leopard?

• Why do I get error, Invalid command 'PythonHandler'?

  I'm trying to deploy a Django application, but I've hit a brick wall. On Debian (latest), I've run these commands so far: apt-get install apache2 apache2-doc apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils libexpat1 ssl-cert libapache2-mod-python python-django I've tried adding the module manually in the Apache 2 config files, but to be honest I'm totally lost. It's totally different to Apache version 1 which I used years ago. Syntax error on line 7 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default: Invalid command 'PythonHandler', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration I've added the following to my sites-available/default file, between the tags. <Location "/"> SetHandler python-program PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE hellodjango1.settings PythonDebug Off </Location> Here's what tutorials I've used so far, without much luck: Django | How to use Django with Apache and mod_python | Django Documentation How To Install Django On Debian Etch (Apache2/mod_python)

  Our company has two physical servers: a Dell R710 with 4 NIC and a Dell R410 with 2 NIC. Right now, we have Windows server 2008 R2 installed on R710 with AD setup to host our domain. I am thinking to install both SBS 2011 and TMG 2010 on the other R410 running on Hyper-V. As I am fairly new to Windows Server technology, I'd like to check with you fellow Windows admins and see what is the proper way to install SBS 2011 and TMG 2010 and how to migrate the 2008 AD. Your advice and help will be highly appreciated.

• Difference between RPM (yum) and apt-get

  Functional difference between the two? Packages different style or what? I'm dipping my toe in the server pool and playing with an Ubuntu install right now, which is apt-get. I'm also considering FreeBSD and Debian if I do decide to start running my own VPS. So far things have been very easy, sudo apt-get install apache2 and the like with no issues at all. I'd like to know if there is a different learning curve to yum or variants.

• Using dnsmasq dns server on a laptop for a locally hosted tld

  Hi, I'm running a working apache install with mod vhost_alias on a laptop. Everything works, but I have to manually add hosts in my /etc/hosts file. I'd like to install dnsmasq to point a tld to my local machine (this is not the problem, I know how to add a wildcard tld to dnsmasq), but how do I make it so that it will go look for other dns servers upstream? Remember I'm talking about a laptop, so I will be working on various wifi hotspots, with different default gateways, dns servers, etc. I've searched for quite some time but the only things I find are guides that require you to hardcode the upstream servers wich is a no-go for me. Any help is appreciated!

• Ubuntu 14.04 boot error on Windows 8.1 - SYSLINUX 4.07 EDD

  I want to replace Windows 8.1 that came with my laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. I keep getting a black screen with this line: SYSLINUX 4.07 EDD 2013-07-25 Copyright (C) 1994-2013 H. Peter Anvin et al Things I did before: turned off fast boot disabled secure boot switched to Legacy instead of UEFI (even though a tutorial I found said this isn't really needed anymore, I still did anyway because I read it from the laptop's user guide: "If you need to install a legacy operating system, such as Windows (that is, any operating system before Windows 8), Linux or Dos, etc on your computer, you must change the boot mode to Legacy support." I chose to load from USB. and then that SYSLINUX 4.77 EDD.... appears I tried to install using the same USB on an old Lenovo S10-3. It worked. Though that S10-3 runs Lubuntu. Still it's probably safe to say that it's not the USB that has problems, right? Thanks for any help. I can't wait to have Ubuntu :) edit: This might be useful info. The USB is 16GB X-Stor Fat32. I used YUMI.

• /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed

  Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

Since several people using the VPN I'm planing to install the VPN client on one of our server and share it through RRAS to save the licenses (like site - to - site). I install RRAS on a windows 2008 R2 (svrw2k8r2) and made the static routes on client computers. I could able to ping to the VPN's IP on svrw2k8r2 server but they can't seems to connect to the servers in other branch through this setup. • Native packaging for JavaFX

  JavaFX 2.2 adds new packaging option for JavaFX applications, allowing you to package your application as a "native bundle". This gives your users a way to install and run your application without any external dependencies on a system JRE or FX SDK. I'd like to give you an overview of what is it, motivation behind it, and finally explain how to get started with it. Screenshots may give you some idea of user experience but first hand experience is always the best. Before we go into all of the boring details, here are few different flavors of Ensemble for you to try: exe, msi, dmg, rpm installers and zip of linux bundle for non-rpm aware systems. Alternatively, check out native packages for JFXtras 2. Whats wrong with existing deployment options? JavaFX 2 applications are easy to distribute as a standalone application or as an application deployed on the web (embedded in the web page or as link to launch application from the webpage). JavaFX packaging tools, such as ant tasks and javafxpackager utility, simplify the creation of deployment packages even further. Why add new deployment options? JavaFX applications have implicit dependency on the availability of Java and JavaFX runtimes, and while existing deployment methods provide a means to validate the system requirements are met -- and even guide user to perform required installation/upgrades -- they do not fully address all of the important scenarios. In particular, here are few examples: the user may not have admin permissions to install new system software if the application was certified to run in the specific environment (fixed version of Java and JavaFX) then it may be hard to ensure user has this environment due to an autoupdate of the system version of Java/JavaFX (to ensure they are secure). Potentially, other apps may have a requirement for a different JRE or FX version that your app is incompatible with. your distribution channel may disallow dependencies on external frameworks (e.g. Mac AppStore) What is a "native package" for JavaFX application? In short it is  A Wrapper for your JavaFX application that makes is into a platform-specific application bundle Each Bundle is self-contained and includes your application code and resources (same set as need to launch standalone application from jar) Java and JavaFX runtimes (private copies to be used by this application only) native application launcher  metadata (icons, etc.) No separate installation is needed for Java and JavaFX runtimes Can be distributed as .zip or packaged as platform-specific installer No application changes, the same jar app binaries can be deployed as a native bundle, double-clickable jar, applet, or web start app What is good about it: Easy deployment of your application on fresh systems, without admin permissions when using .zip or a user-level installer No-hassle compatibility.  Your application is using a private copy of Java and JavaFX. The developer (you!) controls when these are updated. Easily package your application for Mac AppStore (or Windows, or...) Process name of running application is named after your application (and not just java.exe)  Easily deploy your application using enterprise deployment tools (e.g. deploy as MSI) Support is built in into JDK 7u6 (that includes JavaFX 2.2) Is it a silver bullet for the deployment that other deployment options will be deprecated? No.  There are no plans to deprecate other deployment options supported by JavaFX, each approach addresses different needs. Deciding whether native packaging is a best way to deploy your application depends on your requirements. A few caveats to consider: "Download and run" user experienceUnlike web deployment, the user experience is not about "launch app from web". It is more of "download, install and run" process, and the user may need to go through additional steps to get application launched - e.g. accepting a browser security dialog or finding and launching the application installer from "downloads" folder. Larger download sizeIn general size of bundled application will be noticeably higher than size of unbundled app as a private copy of the JRE and JavaFX are included.  We're working to reduce the size through compression and customizable "trimming", but it will always be substantially larger than than an app that depends on a "system JRE". Bundle per target platformBundle formats are platform specific. Currently a native bundle can only be produced for the same system you are building on.  That is, if you want to deliver native app bundles on Windows, Linux and Mac you will have to build your project on all three platforms. Application updates are the responsibility of developerWeb deployed Java applications automatically download application updates from the web as soon as they are available. The Java Autoupdate mechanism takes care of updating the Java and JavaFX runtimes to latest secure version several times every year. There is no built in support for this in for bundled applications. It is possible to use 3rd party libraries (like Sparkle on Mac) to add autoupdate support at application level.  In a future version of JavaFX we may include built-in support for autoupdate (add yourself as watcher for RT-22211 if you are interested in this) Getting started with native bundles First, you need to get the latest JDK 7u6 beta build (build 14 or later is recommended). On Windows/Mac/Linux it comes with JavaFX 2.2 SDK as part of JDK installation and contains JavaFX packaging tools, including: bin/javafxpackagerCommand line utility to produce JavaFX packages. lib/ant-javafx.jar Set of ant tasks to produce JavaFX packages (most recommended way to deploy apps) For general information on how to use them refer to the Deploying JavaFX Application guide. Once you know how use these tools to package your JavaFX application for other deployment methods there are only a few minor tweaks necessary to produce native bundles: make sure java is used from JDK7u6 bundle you have installed adjust your PATH settings if needed  if you are using ant tasks add "nativeBundles=all" attribute to fx:deploy task if you are using javafxpackager pass "-native" option to deploy command or if you are using makeall command then it will try build native packages by default result bundles will be in the "bundles" folder next to other deployment artifacts Note that building some types of native packages (e.g. .exe or .msi) may require additional free 3rd party software to be installed and available on PATH. As of JDK 7u6 build 14 you could build following types of packages: Windows bundle image EXE Inno Setup 5 or later is required Result exe will perform user level installation (no admin permissions are required) At least one shortcut will be created (menu or desktop) Application will be launched at the end of install MSI WiX 3.0 or later is required Result MSI will perform user level installation (no admin permissions are required) At least one shortcut will be created (menu or desktop)  MacOS bundle image dmg (drag and drop) installer Linux bundle image rpm rpmbuild is required shortcut will be added to the programs menu If you are using Netbeans for producing the deployment packages then you will need to add custom build step to the build.xml to execute the fx:deploy task with native bundles enabled. Perhaps the easiest way to try building native bundles is to download the latest JavaFX samples bundle and build Ensemble, BrickBreaker or SwingInterop. • Turn Off Google Chrome Annoying Link Hover

  I like Google Chrome a lot, but there are two problems I have with it. The Address Bar search history feature that I want to turn off, and the feature where I hover over a hyperlink and in the bottom lefthand corner it shows a light blue hover tooltip about where that link goes. I really don't care where a given link goes and wish I could turn that feature off, even if I have to install a Google Chrome Extension. So, for these two reasons, I will not install Google Chrome as my primary browser and will remain with Firefox. So, is there a fix to turn the annoying link hover tooltip feature off?

  I want to install the MaxMind GeoIP C library, so that I can use GeoIP as part of Django. I'm working on MacOS. I've downloaded GeoIP-1.4.8.tar.gz from here and run: ./configure make make check make install without any problems. I've also downloaded GeoIP.dat.gz and GeoLiteCity.dat.gz, unzipped them and put them in a local directory. Then I've set the following paths in my settings.py: GEOIP_PATH = 'path_to_dat_files' GEOIP_LIBRARY_PATH = 'path_to_c_files' Now I'm trying to run python manage.py migrate (which has a reference to GeoIP in a project I'm using), but I'm still getting this error: from django.contrib.gis.utils import GeoIP ImportError: cannot import name GeoIP Any ideas? • SQL SERVER – Fix: Error: Compatibility Level Drop Down is Empty

  I currently have SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 both installed on the same machine. My job requires me to travel a lot and I like to travel light. Hence, I have only one computer with all the software installed in it. I can install Virtual Machines but as I was able to install SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 side by side, I just went ahead with that option. Now one day when I opened up my SQL Server 2014 and went to the properties of the my database, I realized that the dropdown box for Compatibility level is empty. I just can’t select anything there or see what is the current Compatibility level of the database. This was the first time for me so I was bit confused and I tried to search online. Upon searching online I realize that if I was not the first, there are very few questions on this subject on various forums as well as there is no convincing answer to this problem online. That means, I was pretty much first one to face this error. See the image of the situation I was facing. Now I decided to resolve this issue as soon as I can. I spent a few minutes here and there and realize my mistake. I had connected to SQL Server 2014 instance from SQL Server 2012 Management Studio. Hence, I was not able to see any compatibility related settings. Once I connected to SQL Server 2014 instance with SQL Server 2014 Management Studio – this issue was resolved. Well, simple things sometimes keep us very busy. • Gparted resize of an extended partition fails with error "can't have overlapping partitions".

  I just decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. However I didn't do this manually but instead used the "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" option during the installation. Now the partition that Ubuntu runs in has very little space and I am getting warning messages. I'm trying to use gparted 0.12.1-5 (via a live CD) to give Windows less space and give Ubuntu more. I've managed to remove 100GB from the Windows partition so I now have some unallocated space between Windows and Ubuntu. This is what it looks like inside Ubuntu (not using the live CD, since it won't let me mount a USB to save a screenshot): So first I take sda4 (extended?) and resize it to the left so it takes up all the unallocated space. Then I resize sda5 (ext4) as well so it takes up all the new space. However, when I hit apply, it fails on the first action (resizing sd4) with the error message can't have overlapping partitions. Any ideas as to why this happens? I also tried resizing sda4 by just a few MB so that it definitely didn't overlap anything, but I still got the same error message. To clarify, I am using gparted from the LiveCD, I just took the screenshot from Ubuntu. I couldn't attach the details file containing the error information from gparted because I can't mount a USB drive when I'm running from the LiveCD. I'm tried following the guide on the gparted website but it says Invalid argument or something like that. If the gparted details are needed, I may need some hints on how to solve the USB issue as well. :)

  I have been trying a lot (but not smartly) to figure out setting up VIM, ctags, omnicomple for PHP development. On Googling I found this file. But have no clue how to use it. What have I done until now? Here it is: I am on Fedora 17 64-bit OS Logged in as root Found my VIM version to be VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled May 8 2012 15:05:51) Followed the install details as here http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=3171 install details Place in $HOME/.vim/autoload/phpcomplete.vim and enable the php ftplugin What else I am missing? How do I start using omnicomplete. (this is the first time I am using omnicomplete) Why didn't I try IDE's? I have a single core machine running LAMP stack. Didn't wanted to slow down everything and hence sticking to command line environment.

• Can't find instructions how to use Windows 7 drivers on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Windows 7 x64 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 R2 doesn't. Event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. I know there's a very good reason for this difference. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are usually desktop machines (a bit more powerful though) and would benefit from the whole driver spectrum that Windows 7 offers... Question I know I've been reading on the internet about some trick where you first install Windows 7, than do something to get either all Windows 7 drivers or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 R2 and use those drivers of Windows 7. The thing is I can't find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where they are please provide the link for the rest of us.

• Easy BCD Help: Dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu 11.10 -- "Add new Entry" for Ubuntu

  I first had Ubuntu 11.10 installed on a single partition on my 750GB hard drive. I then partitioned the hard drive to 500GB (for Ubuntu) in ext4 format (what it already was from the clean install of Ubuntu)....and 250GB for Win7 in NFTS format. Then I installed Win7 onto that 250GB partition. Installation went smoothly and I was successfully booted into Win7 and setting everything up. After I was done doing all the stupid updates from Microsof, I thought I was done and I wanted to go back to Ubuntu. This is where the problem starts Of course I reboot and it goes directly to Win7. I research and find that Win7 has overwritten the Ubuntu bootloader, etc etc.. I don't fully understand it. I download EasyBCD 2.1.2 In EasyBCD, I select "Add New Entry" and select "Linux/BSD" and change the type to "GRUB 2" and name it "Ubuntu" Next, I go to "BCD Deployment" and select "Install the Windows Vista/7 bootloader to the MBR" and click "Write MBR" I reboot, select "Ubuntu" and the purple screen comes up, but NOTHING HAPPENS. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, it goes to the Login menu where it acts normal for about 10-15 seconds, then freezes. It does this repeatedly every time. MY QUESTION: What's wrong here? Why can't I load Ubuntu now? Am I going to have to reinstall Ubuntu with Windows, then set up the bootloader with EasyBCD instead of Ubuntu, THEN Win7? Any and all help is appreciated! -Brad
