  I have a database which is running under Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Now, I have seen, that the log of the database (ldf-file) is growing to big size. The database-file (mdf) has a size of 630MB and the log-file has a size of 12GB. I ask me now, what the reason for this can be. Is there a tool which let me seeing into the log where I can see, what is the reason for this big size? What can I do to prevent that the log is growing to this big size?

• How to use the merge command

  Say I have a table called Employee (has ID, NAME, ADDRESS, and PHONE columns). (Not my real problem, but simplified to make the question easier.) If I call a sproc called UpdateEmployee and I pass in a @Name, @Address, @Phone and @ID. Can merge be used to easily check to see if the ID exists? If it does to update the name, address and phone? and if it does not to insert them? I see examples on the net, but they are huge and hairy. I would like a nice simple example if possible. (We recently upgraded to SQL 2008, so I am new to the merge command.)

• SQL finding overlapping of times pass midnight (across 2 days)

  Hi everyone, I know there are lots of these types of questions, but i didn't see one that was similar enough to my criteria. So i'd like to ask for your help please. The fields i have are just start and end which are of time types. I cannot involve any specific dates in this. If the time ranges don't go pass midnight across day, i'd just compare two tuples as such: end1 > start2 AND start1 < end2 (end points touching are not considered overlapped here.) But when I involve time range that pass (or at) midnight, this obviously doesn't work. For example, given: start | end --------+-------- 06:00PM | 01:00AM 03:00PM | 09:00PM Without involving dates, how can i achieve this, please. My assumption is, if end is less than start, then we're involving 2 days. I'm trying to do this in plain standard SQL, so just a simple and concise logic in the WHERE clause. Thank you everyone!

  hi, I'm trying to create a query in an access database for a C# dataset using the query editor but the created method says there is a problem and isn't created correctly. SELECT Discs.* FROM Discs WHERE (Title=@Title OR @Title IS NULL) AND (Type=@Type OR @Type IS NULL) AND (ContainerID=@ContainerID OR @ContainerID IS NULL) AND NOT (@Title IS NULL AND @Type IS NULL AND @ContainerID IS NULL) the error is: Generated SELECT statement. Error in WHERE clause near '@'. Unable to parse query text. the generated select method doesn't have any parameters and is unusable. I've tried the exact same SQL statement in the access query and it worked flawlessly, what am I supposed to be doing differently when transferring it to C#?

  I'm having some issues with a group by clause in SQL. I have the following basic function: CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fn_GetWinsYear (@Year int) RETURNS int AS BEGIN declare @W int select @W = count(1) from tblGames where WinLossForfeit = 'W' and datepart(yyyy,Date) = @Year return @W END I'm trying to run the following basic query: select dbo.fn_GetWinsYear(datepart(yyyy,date)) from tblGames group by datepart(yyyy,date) However, I'm encountering the following error message: Column 'tblGames.Date' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause. Any ideas why this is occurring? FYI, I know I can remove the function and combine into one call but I'd like to keep the function in place if possible.

• How to write a CASE WHEN statement with multiple DATEDIFF variables

  I need to calculate the difference between two dates (facility_start_date, facility_end_date) for a report in Reporting Services in SQL 2005. If the facility_end_date is null then it needs to use the report parameter @EndDate in the calculation. However if the facility_end_date is greater than the parameter @EndDate, then it also needs to use the paramenter @EndDate. The code below works fine except that if the facility_end_date is greater than the parameter @EndDate it is still calculating between the facility_start_date and facility_end_date, rather than between the facility_start_date and @EndDate. Any help would be appreciated. • Take advantage of multiple cores executing SQL statements

  I have a small application that reads XML files and inserts the information on a SQL DB. There are ~ 300 000 files to import, each one with ~ 1000 records. I started the application on 20% of the files and it has been running for 18 hours now, I hope I can improve this time for the rest of the files. I'm not using a multi-thread approach, but since the computer I'm running the process on has 4 cores I was thinking on doing it to get some improvement on the performance (although I guess the main problem is the I/O and not only the processing). I was thinking on using the BeginExecutingNonQuery() method on the SqlCommand object I create for each insertion, but I don't know if I should limit the max amount of simultaneous threads (nor I know how to do it). What's your advice to get the best CPU utilization? Thanks

  Ok I know little about SQL so bare with me... I'm trying to see if certain values exist in a third level table and I don't know how to go about it. Here is the scenario... I have a Accident table that holds accident information. It has 3 one-to-many child tables (Units, Occupants, NonMotorists). An each of those child tables have their own many-to-many child table (Alcohol). I need to be able to have some way of seeing if a range of values exists in a field in those Alcohol tables. • MS SQL Specific Tables Hanging at Queries

  I have SQL Server 2008. I run a query in a table on a database. The weirdest thing keeps happening. I run a simple select statement on the table. I know there are 62 rows in the table but it gets stuck at row 48 and goes on "querying...". Waited already for hours and it didn't move on from there. I only know of two programs, and one reporting service connecting to that particular table and one other user. Does anyone have any idea on what could be causing this and how I could trace the source of the lock on that table? As a side note, I noted that the logs only had a notice that Autogrow failed the day before I checked. Could this have something to do with it?

  Hi guys, I have this thing that i need to do and some advices will be greatly appreciated. I have a Sql server table with some phone calls.For each phone call i have the start and end time. What i need to accomplish: a stored procedure which for a certain period of time, let's say 5 hours at a x interval, lets say 2 minutes returns the number of connected calls. Something like: Interval Nr of Calls Connected 01-01-2010 12:00:00 - 01-01-2010 12:05:00 30 01-01-2010 12:05:01 - 01-01-2010 12:10:00 10 ............. Which will be the fastest way to do that?   I am having trouble with an SQL query returning more than one row with the same name, using this query: SELECT * FROM People P JOIN SpecialityCombo C ON P.PERSONID = C.PERSONID JOIN Speciality S ON C.GROUPID = S.ID; People contains information on each person, Specialty contains the names and ID of each specialty and SpecialityCombo contains information about the associations between People and their Speciality, namely each row has a PERSONID and a Speciality ID (trying to keep it normalised to some extent). My query works in that it returns each Person and the name of their specialty, but it returns n rows for the number of specialitys they want, because each specialty returns the same row 'name'. What I want is it to return just one row containing each speciality. How can I do this?

  In SQL server, I'm using a table variable and when done manipulating it I want to insert its values into a real table that has an identity column which is also the PK. The table variable I'm making has two columns; the physical table has four, the first of which is the identity column, an integer IK. The data types for the columns I want to insert are the same as the target columns' data types. INSERT INTO [dbo].[Message] ([Name], [Type]) SELECT DISTINCT [Code],[MessageType] FROM @TempTableVariable END This fails with Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.Message' with unique index 'IX_Message_Id'. The duplicate key value is (ApplicationSelection). But when trying to insert just Values (...) it works ok. How do I get it right?

• SQL update statement to change the value of a field and not replace it

  I'm in the process of migrating some databases. I have this table that has a couple of hundred rows, and has a filename column. To each record in this table, the filename column needs to be altered and part of a path needs to be prepended to the value that is in that field. The table is like: | 1 | filename1 | | 2 | filename2 | and needs to become: | 1 | path/filename1 | | 2 | path/filename2 | I am not an SQL guru, but I know the basics. This eludes me though. Is there a way to do something like: update table set filename = 'path/' + filename where id = 1;

• Beginner SQL question(s)

  I am two months in to an intro sql course, it's late at night, and I am drawing a blank. I have two tables, one customers, and one orders. I have to increase any customers credit limit by twenty five percent for all customers who have made two or more orders in which each order is more than the amount of 250.00. I get how to UPDATE CreditLimit * 1.25 and Cust with an order 250, but how the hell do I get it to check if they have made two orders over 250? Second question, we are just starting to take subqueries, and I am having a difficult time getting it into my skull. Another question posed by the prof of our class is to increase the credit limit of a customer who has an order that exceeds their credit limit. (Credit limit is on a customers table, order and amount are on an orders table). I then take that customer and UPDATE his CreditLimit +1000. Thanks for any help.

Table 1 has 1 column called: OldDate which is nvarchar(255), null Table 2 has 1 column called: NewDate which is datetime, not null Example data in Table 1: 26/07/03 NULL NULL 23/07/2003 7/26/2003 NULL 28/07/03 When i try CAST(OldDate as datetime) I get this error: Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime. I need to insert OldDate into NewDate with no errors. I can't skip some rows. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

  I use SPs and this isn't an SP vs code-behind "Build your SQL command" question. I'm looking for a high-throughput method for a backend app that handles many small transactions. I use SQLDataReader for most of the returns since forward only works in most cases for me. I've seen it done many ways, and used most of them myself. Methods that define and accept the stored procedure parameters as parameters themselves and build using cmd.Parameters.Add (with or without specifying the DB value type and/or length) Assembling your SP params and their values into an array or hashtable, then passing to a more abstract method that parses the collection and then runs cmd.Parameters.Add Classes that represent tables, initializing the class upon need, setting the public properties that represent the table fields, and calling methods like Save, Load, etc I'm sure there are others I've seen but can't think of at the moment as well. I'm open to all suggestions.

  I need to replace a lot of values for a Table in SQL if the inactivity is greater then 30 days. I have UPDATE VERSION SET isActive = 0 WHERE customerNo = ( SELECT c.VersionNo FROM Activity b INNER JOIN VERSION c ON b.VersionNo = c.VersionNo WHERE (Months_between(sysdate, b.Activitye) > 30) ); It only works for one value though, if there is more then one returned it fails. What am I missing here? If someone could educate me on what is going on, I'd also appreciate it.

• SQL: Optimize insensive SELECTs on DateTime fields

  I have an application for scheduling certain events. And all these events must be reviewed after each scheduled time. So basically we have 3 tables: items(id, name) scheduled_items(id, item_id, execute_at - datetime) - item_id column has an index option. reviewed_items(id, item_id, created_at - datetime) - item_id column has an index option. So core function of the application is "give me any items(which are not yet reviewed) for the actual moment". How can I optimize this solution for speed(because it is very core business feature and not micro optimization)? I suppose that adding index to the datetime fields doesn't make any sense because the cardinality or uniqueness on that fields are very high and index won't give any(?) speed-up. Is it correct? What would you recommend? Should I try no-SQL? -- mysql -V 5.075 I use caching where it makes sence.

  Currently i have varchar field. The delimiter is "$P$P$". The delimiter will appear atleast once and atmost twice in the varchar data. Eg.   I've been searching google a lot for this issue and really found nothing. People just keep copying MySQL documentation on last_insert_id and nothing else. I've got an issue regarding last_insert_id, because for both situations (php & sql) it returns 0. YES: I've set a PRIMARY & UNIQUE field with AUTO_INCREMENT value YES: i've done some inserting before NO: Making double query with INSERT AND SELECT LAST... doesn't work. I've created a class Db for maintaining connection & query: class Db { public function connect() { $db = new mysqli('','','','',''); ... return $db; } public function insert() { $this->connect()->query("INSERT INTO bla bla..."); return $this->connect()->insert_id; } } And it doesn't work.

A bit of background: just practicing making a web app, a form on page 1 takes in some values from the user, posts them to the next page which contains the code to connect to the DB and populate the relevant tables. • compare date split across colums

  Greetings. I am querying tables from Microsoft SQL 2008 which have date split across 3 columns: day, month and year. Unfortunately, I do not have control over this because data is coming in to the database daily from a 3rd party source in that format. I need to add between to a where clause so user can pull records within a range. Would be easy enough if date was in a single column but finding it nearly impossible when its split across three columns. To display the date, I am doing a CAST( CAST(year as varchar(4)) + '-' + CAST(month as varchar(2)) + '-' + CAST(day as varchar(2)) as date) AS "date"` in a select. I tried to put it as a parameter for datediff function or just the regular between but get no results. Thanks for any help.
