  • Netbook Review: HP Mini 5102

    Its specs sound generic -- Intel Atom CPU, 10.1-inch screen, 1GB of RAM, the usual -- but HP's top-of-the-line netbook is anything but. Can it justify a $415 price in a world of $300 to $350 netbooks?

  • Objective-C Moving UIView along a curved path

    - by PruitIgoe
    I'm not sure if I am approaching this the correct way. In my app, when a user touches the screen I capture the point and create an arc from a fixed point to that touch point. I then want to move a UIView along that arc. Here's my code: ViewController.m //method to "shoot" object - KIP_Projectile creates the arc, KIP_Character creates the object I want to move along the arc ... //get arc for trajectory KIP_Projectile* vThisProjectile = [[KIP_Projectile alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(51.0, fatElvisCenterPoint-30.0, touchPoint.x, 60.0)]; vThisProjectile.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; [self.view addSubview:vThisProjectile]; ... KIP_Character* thisChar = [[KIP_Character alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(51, objCenterPoint-5, imgThisChar.size.width, imgThisChar.size.height)]; thisChar.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; thisChar.charID = charID; thisChar.charType = 2; thisChar.strCharType = @"Projectile"; thisChar.imgMyImage = imgThisChar; thisChar.myArc = vThisProjectile; [thisChar buildImage]; [thisChar traceArc]; in KIP_Projectile I build the arc using this code: - (CGMutablePathRef) createArcPathFromBottomOfRect : (CGRect) rect : (CGFloat) arcHeight { CGRect arcRect = CGRectMake(rect.origin.x, rect.origin.y + rect.size.height - arcHeight, rect.size.width, arcHeight); CGFloat arcRadius = (arcRect.size.height/2) + (pow(arcRect.size.width, 2) / (8*arcRect.size.height)); CGPoint arcCenter = CGPointMake(arcRect.origin.x + arcRect.size.width/2, arcRect.origin.y + arcRadius); CGFloat angle = acos(arcRect.size.width / (2*arcRadius)); CGFloat startAngle = radians(180) + angle; CGFloat endAngle = radians(360) - angle; CGMutablePathRef path = CGPathCreateMutable(); CGPathAddArc(path, NULL, arcCenter.x, arcCenter.y, arcRadius, startAngle, endAngle, 0); return path; } - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { CGContextRef currentContext = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); _myArcPath = [self createArcPathFromBottomOfRect:self.bounds:30.0]; CGContextSetLineWidth(currentContext, 1); CGFloat red[4] = {1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f}; CGContextSetStrokeColor(currentContext, red); CGContextAddPath(currentContext, _myArcPath); CGContextStrokePath(currentContext); } Works fine. The arc is displayed with a red stroke on the screen. In KIP_Character, which has been passed it's relevant arc, I am using this code but getting no results. - (void) traceArc { CGMutablePathRef myArc = _myArc.myArcPath; // Set up path movement CAKeyframeAnimation *pathAnimation = [CAKeyframeAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"position"]; pathAnimation.calculationMode = kCAAnimationPaced; pathAnimation.fillMode = kCAFillModeForwards; pathAnimation.removedOnCompletion = NO; pathAnimation.path = myArc; CGPathRelease(myArc); [self.layer addAnimation:pathAnimation forKey:@"savingAnimation"]; } Any help here would be appreciated.

  • iPad: How To Soft Reset, Restore Factory Settings And Erase All Content

    - by Gopinath
    iPad is an amazing gadget from Apple and everyone of us loves to own it. If you are a lucky one to own an iPad here are some basic troubleshooting features that you should be aware. There is no doubt that iPad is an amazing gadget, but similar to other electronic gadgets it refuses to work now and then. When your iPad hangs or refuses to respond you can soft reset it by holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. This just reset your iPad and it’s similar to force rebooting your PC. All your settings and data are untouched during this process. The embedded video below shows how to turn off and soft reset an iPad. If iPad Doesn’t Work After Soft Reset – Restore Factory Settings Soft reset should resolve most of the iPad issues like hanging, not responding properly, etc. In case even if your iPad does not work properly after soft reset you can try reset all the setting to factory defaults by navigating through the Home screen > Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.  This will reset all your settings and other iPad customizations to factory defaults but your data(images, documents, apps, etc.) are left untouched. How To Erase All Content Of iPad You may ask why should I erase all the content of iPad? Well may be you are willing to sell it off on eBay by erasing all the content or you want start afresh or some other reason. It is easy to reset all the settings of iPad as well as wipe out all content by navigating through Home screen > General > Reset >  “Erase All Content and Settings.” CC Image credit flickr/korosirego This article titled,iPad: How To Soft Reset, Restore Factory Settings And Erase All Content, was originally published at Tech Dreams. • Android 4 Fragments with Mono for Android

    - by Wallym
    With the release of Android 3.0, Google added support for larger displays and attention-grabbing UI designs and layouts. On a tablet screen, UI components can be used to present better information. How does Android do this? It has a technology called Fragments, and I'll look at its implementation in the currently shipping operating system, Android 4. (Let's get past all the jokes about Android and fragmentation on its device platform.)For more information on this, check out my article at Visual Studio Magazine - http://visualstudiomagazine.com/articles/2012/12/13/android-4-and-fragments.aspx

  • Code for Parallelism Features Tour

    Last year I linked to a screencast that shows off many VS2010 features delivered by the Parallel Computing team.There have been requests for the code used to demonstrate the features. Like with all my screencasts, you can see all the code in action, so you could simply type it in. To save you doing that though, you may download the two files with the demo code here: MM.cs and Program.cs. HTH. Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

  • Writing to XML issue Unity3D C#

    - by N0xus
    I'm trying to create a tool using Unity to generate an XML file for use in another project. Now, please, before someone suggests I do it in something, the reason I am using Unity is that it allows me to easily port this to an iPad or other device with next to no extra development. So please. Don't suggest to use something else. At the moment, I am using the following code to write to my XML file. public void WriteXMLFile() { string _filePath = Application.dataPath + @"/Data/HV_DarkRideSettings.xml"; XmlDocument _xmlDoc = new XmlDocument(); if (File.Exists(_filePath)) { _xmlDoc.Load(_filePath); XmlNode rootNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("Settings"); // _xmlDoc.AppendChild(rootNode); rootNode.RemoveAll(); XmlElement _cornerNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("Screen_Corners"); _xmlDoc.DocumentElement.PrependChild(_cornerNode); #region Top Left Corners XYZ Values // indent top left corner value to screen corners XmlElement _topLeftNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("Top_Left"); _cornerNode.AppendChild(_topLeftNode); // set the XYZ of the top left values XmlElement _topLeftXNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("TopLeftX"); XmlElement _topLeftYNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("TopLeftY"); XmlElement _topLeftZNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("TopLeftZ"); // indent these values to the top_left value in XML _topLeftNode.AppendChild(_topLeftXNode); _topLeftNode.AppendChild(_topLeftYNode); _topLeftNode.AppendChild(_topLeftZNode); #endregion #region Bottom Left Corners XYZ Values // indent top left corner value to screen corners XmlElement _bottomLeftNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("Bottom_Left"); _cornerNode.AppendChild(_bottomLeftNode); // set the XYZ of the top left values XmlElement _bottomLeftXNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("BottomLeftX"); XmlElement _bottomLeftYNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("BottomLeftY"); XmlElement _bottomLeftZNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("BottomLeftZ"); // indent these values to the top_left value in XML _bottomLeftNode.AppendChild(_bottomLeftXNode); _bottomLeftNode.AppendChild(_bottomLeftYNode); _bottomLeftNode.AppendChild(_bottomLeftZNode); #endregion #region Bottom Left Corners XYZ Values // indent top left corner value to screen corners XmlElement _bottomRightNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("Bottom_Right"); _cornerNode.AppendChild(_bottomRightNode); // set the XYZ of the top left values XmlElement _bottomRightXNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("BottomRightX"); XmlElement _bottomRightYNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("BottomRightY"); XmlElement _bottomRightZNode = _xmlDoc.CreateElement("BottomRightZ"); // indent these values to the top_left value in XML _bottomRightNode.AppendChild(_bottomRightXNode); _bottomRightNode.AppendChild(_bottomRightYNode); _bottomRightNode.AppendChild(_bottomRightZNode); #endregion _xmlDoc.Save(_filePath); } } This generates the following XML file: <Settings> <Screen_Corners> <Top_Left> <TopLeftX /> <TopLeftY /> <TopLeftZ /> </Top_Left> <Bottom_Left> <BottomLeftX /> <BottomLeftY /> <BottomLeftZ /> </Bottom_Left> <Bottom_Right> <BottomRightX /> <BottomRightY /> <BottomRightZ /> </Bottom_Right> </Screen_Corners> </Settings> Which is exactly what I want. However, each time I press the button that has the WriteXMLFile() method attached to it, it's write the entire lot again. Like so: <Settings> <Screen_Corners> <Top_Left> <TopLeftX /> <TopLeftY /> <TopLeftZ /> </Top_Left> <Bottom_Left> <BottomLeftX /> <BottomLeftY /> <BottomLeftZ /> </Bottom_Left> <Bottom_Right> <BottomRightX /> <BottomRightY /> <BottomRightZ /> </Bottom_Right> </Screen_Corners> <Screen_Corners> <Top_Left> <TopLeftX /> <TopLeftY /> <TopLeftZ /> </Top_Left> <Bottom_Left> <BottomLeftX /> <BottomLeftY /> <BottomLeftZ /> </Bottom_Left> <Bottom_Right> <BottomRightX /> <BottomRightY /> <BottomRightZ /> </Bottom_Right> </Screen_Corners> <Screen_Corners> <Top_Left> <TopLeftX /> <TopLeftY /> <TopLeftZ /> </Top_Left> <Bottom_Left> <BottomLeftX /> <BottomLeftY /> <BottomLeftZ /> </Bottom_Left> <Bottom_Right> <BottomRightX /> <BottomRightY /> <BottomRightZ /> </Bottom_Right> </Screen_Corners> </Settings> Now, I've written XML files before using winforms, and the WriteXMLFile function is exactly the same. However, in my winform, no matter how much I press the WriteXMLFile button, it doesn't write the whole lot again. Is there something that I'm doing wrong or should change to stop this from happening?

  • Book Review (Book 10) - The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood

    - by BuckWoody
    This is a continuation of the books I challenged myself to read to help my career - one a month, for year. You can read my first book review here, and the entire list is here. The book I chose for March 2012 was: The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood by James Gleick. I was traveling at the end of last month so I’m a bit late posting this review here. Why I chose this book: My personal belief about computing is this: All computing technology is simply re-arranging data. We take data in, we manipulate it, and we send it back out. That’s computing. I had heard from some folks about this book and it’s treatment of data. I heard that it dealt with the basics of data - and the semantics of data, information and so on. It also deals with the earliest forms of history of information, which fascinates me. It’s similar I was told, to GEB which a favorite book of mine as well, so that was a bonus. Some folks I talked to liked it, some didn’t - so I thought I would check it out. What I learned: I liked the book. It was longer than I thought - took quite a while to read, even though I tend to read quickly. This is the kind of book you take your time with. It does in fact deal with the earliest forms of human interaction and the basics of data. I learned, for instance, that the genesis of the binary communication system is based in the invention of telegraph (far-writing) codes, and that the earliest forms of communication were expensive. In fact, many ciphers were invented not to hide military secrets, but to compress information. A sort of early “lol-speak” to keep the cost of transmitting data low! I think the comparison with GEB is a bit over-reaching. GEB is far more specific, fanciful and so on. In fact, this book felt more like something fro Richard Dawkins, and tended to wander around the subject quite a bit. I imagine the author doing his research and writing each chapter as a book that followed on from the last one. This is what possibly bothered those who tended not to like it, I think. Towards the middle of the book, I think the author tended to be a bit too fragmented even for me. He began to delve into memes, biology and more - I think he might have been better off breaking that off into another work. The existentialism just seemed jarring. All in all, I liked the book. I recommend it to any technical professional, specifically ones involved with data technology in specific. And isn’t that all of us? :)

Non-interactive retrieval of the entire list of disks that format reports If the format utility cannot show the entire list of disks in a single screen on stdout, it shows some and prompts user to - hit space for more or s to select - to move to the next screen to show few more disks. Finding system wide file descriptors/handles in use Run the following kstat command as any user (privileged or non-privileged). kstat -n file_cache -s buf_inuse Going through /proc (process filesystem) is less efficient and may lead to inaccurate results due to the inclusion of duplicate file handles. 4. ssh connection to a Solaris 11 host fails with error Couldn't agree a client-to-server cipher (available: aes128-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes256-ctr,arcfour128,arcfour256,arcfour) Solution: add 3des-cbc to the list of accepted ciphers to sshd configuration file. • What is the current state of Ubuntu's transition from init scripts to Upstart?

    - by Adam Eberlin
    What is the current state of Ubuntu's transition from init.d scripts to upstart? So I was quite surprised to learn that there was a significant amount of overlap in service references, in addition to being unable to discern which of the two was intended to be the primary service framework. Why does there seem to be a fair amount of redundancy in individual service handling between init.d and upstart? Is something else at play here that I'm missing? What is preventing upstart from completely taking over for init.d? Is there some functionality that certain daemons require which upstart does not yet have, which are preventing some services from converting? Or is it something else entirely?

  • Oracle Tutor: Create Accessible Content for the Disabled Community

    - by emily.chorba(at)oracle.com
    For many reasons--legal, business, and ethical--Oracle recognizes the need for its applications, and our customers' and partners' products built with our tools, to be usable by the disabled community. The following features of Tutor Author and Publisher software facilitate the creation of accessible HTML content for the disabled community.TablesThe following formatting guidelines will ensure that Tutor documents containing tables will be accessible once they are converted to HTML.• Determine whether a table is a "data table" or whether you are using a table simply for formatting. If it's a data table, you must use a heading for each column, and you should format this heading row as "table heading" style and select Table > Heading Rows Repeat.• For non data tables, it is not necessary to include a heading row.GraphicsTo create accessible graphics, add a caption to the graphic. In Microsoft Office 2000 and greater, right-click on the graphic and select Format Picture > Web (tab) > Alternative Text or select the graphic then Format > Picture > Web (tab) Alternative Text. Enter the appropriate information in the dialog box.When a document containing a graphic with alternative text is converted to HTML by Tutor, the HTML document will contain the appropriate accessibility information.Javascript elementsThe tabbed format and other javascript elements in the HTML version of the Tutor documents may not be accessible to all users. A link to an accessible/printable version of the document is available in the upper right corner of all Tutor documents.Repetitive dataIf repetitive data such as the distribution section and the ownership section are causing accessibility issues with your Tutor documents, you can insert a bookmark in the appropriate location of the document, and, when the document is converted to HTML, the bookmark will be converted to an A NAME reference (also known as an internal link). With this reference, you can create a link in Header.txt that can be prepended to each Tutor document that allows the user to bypass repetitive sections. Tutor and Oracle ApplicationsRegarding accessibility, please check Oracle's website on accessibility http://www.oracle.com/accessibility/ to find out what version of E-Business Suite is certified to work with screen readers. Oracle Tutor 11.5.6A and greater works with screen readers such as JAWS.There is no certification between Oracle Tutor and Oracle Applications because there are no related dependencies. It doesn't matter which version of the Oracle Applications you are running. Therefore, it is possible to use Oracle Tutor with earlier versions of Oracle Applications.Oracle Business Process Converter and Oracle ApplicationsOracle Business Process Converter (OBPC) converts Visio, XPDL, and Tutor models to Oracle Business Process Architect and Oracle Business Process Management. • I Choose iNada

    - by Mark Treadwell
    As a laptop and Kindle user, I have been looking at the usual cyclical Apple frenzy in the press with the same kind of amused tolerance I give my three-year-old son.  They never seem to learn, and they keep repeating the same things.  However when I ready articles like this, I am reminded that that is not always the case. I am a happy user of a monster-sized HP HDX laptop, HP touch screen all-in-one system, and multi-screen Dell desktops at home as well as a HP business laptop at work.  I have no iPod, iMac, iTouch or any other relationship with the company who wants to trademark the prefix “i”. I have not missed them. That is not to say that I have no technological gadgets.  I do.  They just do not dominate Every company wants to preserve their customer base, but Apple just does it too rigidly.  The buy-in necessary rubs me wrong.  When the fanboys scream about the next great iApple thing which will kill off another market segment (this time, the iPad will kill off laptops), the amused tolerance returns. From what I have seen, the iPad virtual keyboard is a poor substitute for an actual keyboard.  It was intended to let you get some kind of text into a device that is not really intended for keyboard input, but rather for touch manipulation of a designed interface.  I like the virtual keyboard on my LG Dare cell phone, but you will not catch me writing my next novel with it.  But, you hear, you can connect a real keyboard and get info from another computer.  That is when you realize that the iPad is not a true standalone device like a laptop.  You have to make more hardware purchases to get what you truly want.  It is an expensive accommodation to get you a different form of freedom. So if Apple made a product with me in mind, you can have it.  Everyone gets to make their own choice.  My choice is the iNada.

  • Oracle User Productivity Kit Translation

    - by ultan o'broin
    Oracle's customers just love the User Productivity Kit (UPK). I hear only great things about it from our international customers at the Oracle Usability Advisory Board meetings too. The UPK is the perfect solution for enterprise applications training needs (I previously reviewed a fine book about UPK btw). One question I am often asked is how source content created using the UPK can be translated into another language. I spoke with Peter Maravelias, Principal Product Strategy Manager for UPK about this recently. UPK is already optimized for easy source-target translation already. There is even a solution for re-recording demos. Here's what you can do to get your source content into another language: Use UPK's ability to automatically translate events and actions. UPK comes with XML templates that allow you to accomplish this in 21 languages with a simple publishing action switch. These templates even deal with the tricky business of using gender-based translations. Spanish localization template sample Japanese localization template sample Use the Import and Export localization features to export additional custom content in a format like XLIFF, easily handled by translation tools. You could also export and import in Word format. Re-record the sound (audio) files that go with the recordings, one per screen. UPK's granular approach to the sound files means that timing isn't an option. Retiming demos isn't required. A tip here with sound files and XLFF-exported custom content is to facilitate translation context by avoiding explicit references to actions going on in the screen recordings. A text based storyboard with screenshots accompanying the sound files should also be provided to the translators. Provide a glossary of terms too. Use the re-record option in UPK to record any demo from a translated application. This will allow all the translated UI labels to be automatically captured. You may be required to resize any action events here due to text expansion issues. Of course, you will need translated data in the translated application too, so plan for this in advance. However, source-target language skills aren't required for the re-recording. The UPK Player itself, of course, is also available from Oracle along with content and doc in 21 languages. The Developer and Setup is also translated in a smaller number of languages. Check the Oracle UPK website for latest details. UPK is a super solution for global enterprise applications training deployments allowing source content to be translated into multiple languages easily. See this post on the UPK blog for more insight too!

  • How to use gestures on gnome shell?

    - by Mauricio Andrés
    I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my Acer Apsire V5 touch, and I want to know hot to activate the gestures on my clickpad in Gnome SHell, because in Unity I can use them with no problems. So, is there a way to use the gestures on Gnome Shell? Gestures: Pinch to Zoom Move windows with 3 fingers "Natural scroll" etc... And if it's possible to fully use the touch screen, because it fails when I do a click on it.

  • Character Stats and Power

    - by Stephen Furlani
    I'm making an RPG game system and I'm having a hard time deciding on doing detailed or abstract character statistics. These statistics define the character's natural - not learned - abilities. For example: Mass Effect: 0 (None that I can see) X20 (Xtreme Dungeon Mastery): 1 "STAT" Diablo: 4 "Strength, Magic, Dexterity, Vitality" Pendragon: 5 "SIZ, STR, DEX, CON, APP" Dungeons & Dragons (3.x, 4e): 6 "Str, Dex, Con, Wis, Int, Cha" Fallout 3: 7 "S.P.E.C.I.A.L." RIFTS: 8 "IQ, ME, MA, PS, PP, PE, PB, Spd" Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1st ed?): 12-ish "WS, BS, S, T, Ag, Int, WP, Fel, A, Mag, IP, FP" HERO (5th ed): 14 "Str, Dex, Con, Body, Int, Ego, Pre, Com, PD, ED, Spd, Rec, END, STUN" The more stats, the more complex and detailed your character becomes. This comes with a trade-off however, because you usually only have limited resources to describe your character. D&D made this infamous with the whole min/max-ing thing where strong characters were typically not also smart. But also, a character with a high Str typically also has high Con, Defenses, Hit Points/Health. Without high numbers in all those other stats, they might as well not be strong since they wouldn't hold up well in hand-to-hand combat. So things like that force trade-offs within the category of strength. So my original (now rejected) idea was to force players into deciding between offensive and defensive stats: Might / Body Dexterity / Speed Wit / Wisdom Heart Soul But this left some stat's without "opposites" (or opposites that were easily defined). I'm leaning more towards the following: Body (Physical Prowess) Mind (Mental Prowess) Heart (Social Prowess) Soul (Spiritual Prowess) This will define a character with just 4 numbers. Everything else gets based off of these numbers, which means they're pretty important. There won't, however, be ways of describing characters who are fast, but not strong or smart, but absent minded. Instead of defining the character with these numbers, they'll be detailing their character by buying skills and powers like these: Quickness Add a +2 Bonus to Body Rolls when Dodging. for a character that wants to be faster, or the following for a big, tough character Body Building Add a +2 Bonus to Body Rolls when Lifting, Pushing, or Throwing objects. [EDIT - removed subjectiveness] So my actual questions is what are some pitfalls with a small stat list and a large amount of descriptive powers? Is this more difficult to port cross-platform (pen&paper, PC) for example? Are there examples of this being done well/poorly? Thanks,

  • Achieving Zero Downtime Deployment

    - by MattW
    I am trying to achieve zero downtime deployments so I can deploy less during off hours and more during "slower" hours - or anytime, in theory. My current setup, somewhat simplified: Web Server A (.NET App) Web Server B (.NET App) Database Server (SQL Server) My current deployment process: "Stop" the sites on both Web Server A and B Upgrade the database schema for the version of the app being deployed Update Web Server A Update Web Server B Bring everything back online Current Problem This leads to a small amount of downtime each month - about 30 mins. I do this during off hours, so it isn't a huge problem - but it is something I'd like to get away from. Also - there is no way to really go 'back'. I don't generally make rollback DB scripts - only upgrade scripts. Leveraging The Load Balancer I'd love to be able to upgrade one Web Server at a time. Take Web Server A out of the load balancer, upgrade it, put it back online, then repeat for Web Server B. The problem is the database. Each version of my software will need to execute against a different version of the database - so I am sort of "stuck". Possible Solution A current solution I am considering is adopting the following rules: Never delete a database table. Never delete a database column. Never rename a database column. Never reorder a column. Every stored procedure must be versioned. Meaning - 'spFindAllThings' will become 'spFindAllThings_2' when it is edited. Then it becomes 'spFindAllThings_3' when edited again. Same rule applies to views. While, this seems a bit extreme - I think it solves the problem. Each version of the application will be hitting the DB in a non breaking way. The code expects certain results from the views/stored procedures - and this keeps that 'contract' valid. The problem is - it just seeps sloppy. I know I can clean up old stored procedures after the app is deployed for awhile, but it just feels dirty. Also - it depends on all of the developers following these rule, which will mostly happen, but I imagine someone will make a mistake. Finally - My Question Is this sloppy or hacky? Is anybody else doing it this way? How are other people solving this problem?
