  • Android Apps not working in emulator

    - by Mohit Deshpande
None of my apps work in the emulator. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and everytime I try to access my UI, the app crashes. All I get is an "Sorry! The application ... has stopped unexpectedly". For EVERY app this happens. package com.mohit.helloandroid; import android.app.TabActivity; import android.content.Intent; import android.content.res.Resources; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.TabHost; public class HelloAndroid extends TabActivity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); Resources res = getResources(); //Resource object to get drawables TabHost tabHost = getTabHost(); //The activity tabhost TabHost.TabSpec spec; //Reusable tab spec Intent intent; intent = new Intent().setClass(this, HelloAndroid.class); spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("artists").setIndicator("Artists", res .getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_artists)) .setContent(intent); tabHost.addTab(spec); } } I don't know how this code could possibly throw a message like that.

  • android logging sdcard

    - by Abhi Rao
Hello, With Android-Emulator I am not able to write/create a file on the SD Card (for logging). Here is what I have done so far - Run mksdcard 8192K C:\android-dev\emu_sdcard\emu_logFile - Create a new AVD, when assign emu_logFile to it so that when I view the AVD Details it says C:\android-dev\emu_sdcard\emu_logFile against the field "SD Card" - Here is the relevant code public class ZLogger { static PrintWriter zLogWriter = null; private static void Initialize() { try { File sdDir = Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory(); if (sdDir.canWrite()) { : File logFile = new File (sdDir, VERSION.RELEASE + "_" + ".log"); FileWriter logFileWriter = new FileWriter(logFile); zLogWriter = new PrintWriter(logFileWriter); zLogWriter.write("\n\n - " + date + " - \n"); } } catch (IOException e) { Log.e("ZLogger", "Count not write to file: " + e.getMessage()); } } sdDir.canWrite returns false - please note it not the exception from adb shell when I do ls I see sdcard as link to /mnt/sdcard. • Options for organizing android app with multiple independent apps

    - by lazyguy
Problem Definition: We have a fairly large app which has multiple use cases such that they are all independent of each other. For example lets say we have a1, a2, a3 & a4 modules that are independent apps or use cases for our main app 'A'. The independent a1, a2, a3, a4 are all purchasable apps such that the user goes to our website instead of play store and activate either a1 or a2 by paying some fees on our website. So basically App 'A' is a free app in play-store and is sort of Dashboard with buttons to launch a1, a2, a3, a4. When the user click on lets say a1 button then we will check if a1 is already installed and launch it but if it is not present then give the user a link to download it. Option 1: Have a main app 'A' and a1, a2, a3, a4 as library project. But with this approach the main app A is too big in size. Option 2: Have a1, a2, a3, a4 build as separate .apk and then put in the assets folder of main app 'A' and then install them as needed. Again size of main app A is bigger. Option 3: Upload a1, a2, a3, a4 to a third party website or play store and download from it as needed. This way the main app remains lighter. Observation: In all these approaches there will be an independent app installed with its own icon on users phone. So basically user can launch from either the Dashboard (which will eventually launch an intent from Activity in a1 app) or user can directly launch app a1. Follow-up Question: Is there any other solution that anyone can suggest to tackle this kind of problem? Another things is by going this approach app a1, a2, a3, a4 can be developed & tested independently of each other.

  • Detecting iPhone camera orientation

    - by Stephen Petschulat
I'm getting inconsistent results depending on whether I get the image directly from the camera in the callback or choosing it from the camera roll. In the UIImagePickerControllerDelegate callback method, the UIImage.imageOrientation comes up as UIImageOrientationRight no matter how the photo is taken. When reading it off the Camera Roll, a landscape shot (turned left) comes up UIImageOrientationUp while a portrait shot comes up UIImageOrientationRight. How can I reliably get the camera orientation in both situations?

  • Why Your Android Phone Isn’t Getting Operating System Updates and What You Can Do About It

    - by Chris Hoffman
Several times a year, Google releases a new version of Android with new features and performance improvements. Unfortunately, most Android devices in the wild will never get the update. New Android users are often disappointed to discover that their shiny new smartphone won’t get any updates – or worse, that it was running old software from the moment they bought it. • Making a Background Scrolling in Stacking Game

    - by David Dimalanta
Hmmm...Is it a good idea to use a LibGDX parallax background for making a stacking game (i.e. PAPA STACKer Lite)? For example, I'm starting to use the blocks to drag-n-drop it. Next, when the next piece reaches the top of the screen, it automatically scrolls to the next one where the available space left. Aside from that, is it also involved with the camera code (Orthographic Camera) that the screen size appeared like 720x1280 but actually it's 1440x2560 for example? And another thing, does the background scrolling have the option to scroll from start to finish and infinite?

  • Handling cameras in a large scale game engine

    - by Hannesh
What is the correct, or most elegant, way to manage cameras in large game engines? Or should I ask, how does everybody else do it? The methods I can think of are: Binding cameras straight to the engine; if someone needs to render something, they bind their own camera to the graphics engine which is in use until another camera is bound. A camera stack; a small task can push its own camera onto the stack, and pop it off at the end to return to the "main" camera. Attaching a camera to a shader; Every shader has exactly one camera bound to it, and when the shader is used, that camera is set by the engine when the shader is in use. This allows me to implement a bunch of optimizations on the engine side. Are there other ways to do it?

  • Continue with Java for pc or go to android? [on hold]

    - by Chris London
so I have been learning java from Deitel's learn java 9th edition. I am up to GUI's and a have a pretty good grasp on OOP etc. I want to go straight to the mobile app development scene, I believe I will learn a fair bit there on using API's, and other tools to develop apps. I am not sure weather I should carry on with PC coding (GUI's etc etc) or skip it all and go direct to learning the Android SDK. So, should I carry on, learn about sockets, writing and reading files, GUI's for PC etc or get a book and jump into android? Thanks a lot guys.

  • Android AsyncTask testing problem with Android Test Framework

    - by Vlad
I have a very simple AsyncTask implementation example and have problem to test it using Android JUnit framework. It works just fine when I instantiate and execute it in normal application. However when it's executed from any of Android Testing framework classes (i.e. AndroidTestCase, ActivityUnitTestCase, ActivityInstrumentationTestCase2 etc) it behaves sarngely: - It executes doInBackground() method correctly - However it doesn't invokes any of its notification methods (onPostExecute(), onProgressUpdate(), etc) -- just silently ignores them whitout showing any errors. This is very simple AsyncTask example package kroz.andcookbook.threads.asynctask; import android.os.AsyncTask; import android.util.Log; import android.widget.ProgressBar; import android.widget.Toast; public class AsyncTaskDemo extends AsyncTask<Integer, Integer, String> { AsyncTaskDemoActivity _parentActivity; int _counter; int _maxCount; public AsyncTaskDemo(AsyncTaskDemoActivity asyncTaskDemoActivity) { _parentActivity = asyncTaskDemoActivity; } @Override protected void onPreExecute() { super.onPreExecute(); _parentActivity._progressBar.setVisibility(ProgressBar.VISIBLE); _parentActivity._progressBar.invalidate(); } @Override protected String doInBackground(Integer... params) { _maxCount = params[0]; for (_counter = 0; _counter <= _maxCount; _counter++) { try { Thread.sleep(1000); publishProgress(_counter); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // Ignore } } } @Override protected void onProgressUpdate(Integer... values) { super.onProgressUpdate(values); int progress = values[0]; String progressStr = "Counting " + progress + " out of " + _maxCount; _parentActivity._textView.setText(progressStr); _parentActivity._textView.invalidate(); } @Override protected void onPostExecute(String result) { super.onPostExecute(result); _parentActivity._progressBar.setVisibility(ProgressBar.INVISIBLE); _parentActivity._progressBar.invalidate(); } @Override protected void onCancelled() { super.onCancelled(); _parentActivity._textView.setText("Request to cancel AsyncTask"); } } This is a test case. Here AsyncTaskDemoActivity is a very simple Activity providing UI for testing AsyncTask in mode: package kroz.andcookbook.test.threads.asynctask; import java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException; import kroz.andcookbook.R; import kroz.andcookbook.threads.asynctask.AsyncTaskDemo; import kroz.andcookbook.threads.asynctask.AsyncTaskDemoActivity; import android.content.Intent; import android.test.ActivityUnitTestCase; import android.widget.Button; public class AsyncTaskDemoTest2 extends ActivityUnitTestCase<AsyncTaskDemoActivity> { AsyncTaskDemo _atask; private Intent _startIntent; public AsyncTaskDemoTest2() { super(AsyncTaskDemoActivity.class); } protected void setUp() throws Exception { super.setUp(); _startIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MAIN); } protected void tearDown() throws Exception { super.tearDown(); } public final void testExecute() { startActivity(_startIntent, null, null); Button btnStart = (Button) getActivity().findViewById(R.id.Button01); btnStart.performClick(); assertNotNull(getActivity()); } } All this code is working just fine, except the fact that AsynTask doesn't invoke it's notification methods when executed by whithin Android Testing Framework. Any ideas?

  • Android : Handle OAuth callback using intent-filter

    - by Dave Allison
I am building an Android application that requires OAuth. I have all the OAuth functionality working except for handling the callback from Yahoo. I have the following in my AndroidManifest.xml : <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW"></action> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"></category> <category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE"></category> <data android:host="www.test.com" android:scheme="http"></data> </intent-filter> Where www.test.com will be substituted with a domain that I own. It seems : This filter is triggered when I click on a link on a page. It is not triggered on the redirect by Yahoo, the browser opens the website at www.test.com It is not triggered when I enter the domain name directly in the browser. So can anybody help me with When exactly this intent-filter will be triggered? Any changes to the intent-filter or permissions that will widen the filter to apply to redirect requests? Any other approaches I could use? Thanks for your help.

  • How do I start a service which is defined in a different package?

    - by Brad Hein
I have two apps, one runs in namespace com.gtosoft.voyager and the other is com.gtosoft.dash. From com.gtosoft.dash I would like to start up the service which is defined in com.gtosoft.voyager... I think I need an intent, but what arg(s) would I pass to the intent before kicking it off with startService()? If they were in the same package I could just use Intent svc=new Intent (SettingsActivity.this,VoyagerService.class); startService(svc); Snippet of Manifest which defines the service <application android:icon="@drawable/voyagercarlogo" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="false"> <provider android:name="com.gtosoft.voyager.VoyagerCProvider" android:authorities="com.gtosoft.voyager"/> <service android:name=".VoyagerService"/> <activity android:name=".SettingsActivity" android:label="Voyager" android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity>

  • Java method for android:layout_gravity

    - by André Leitão
Hi folks, I would like to know if is there a way to call android:layout_gravity property from a java method. I didn't found any method in Android documentation to do it. This is the picture of the layout I want to implement: I know to do it through xml, as following: <FrameLayout xlmns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <Button android:layout_gravity="left|center_vertical" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="<" /> <Button android:layout_gravity="right|center_vertical" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text=">" /> </FrameLayout> But in my situation, I need to do it through Java code, because I'll implement another layout views dinamically. To avoid merging xml layout with Java code, I would prefer make all layout using Java. Can you help me? Thanks. André Leitão

  • Android : changing Locale within the app itself

    - by Hubert
    My users can change the Locale within the app (they may want to keep their phone settings in English but read the content of my app in French, Dutch or any other language ...) Why is this working perfectly fine in 1.5/1.6 but NOT in 2.0 anymore ??? @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { switch(item.getItemId()){ case 201: Locale locale2 = new Locale("fr"); Locale.setDefault(locale2); Configuration config2 = new Configuration(); config2.locale = locale2; getBaseContext().getResources().updateConfiguration(config2, getBaseContext().getResources().getDisplayMetrics()); // loading data ... refresh(); // refresh the tabs and their content refresh_Tab (); break; case 201: etc... The problem is that the MENU "shrinks" more and more everytime the user is going through the lines of code above ... This is the Menu that gets shrunk: @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { menu.add(0, 100, 1, "REFRESH").setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_compass); SubMenu langMenu = menu.addSubMenu(0, 200, 2, "NL-FR").setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_rotate); langMenu.add(1, 201, 0, "Nederlands"); langMenu.add(1, 202, 0, "Français"); menu.add(0, 250, 4, R.string.OptionMenu2).setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_send); menu.add(0, 300, 5, R.string.OptionMenu3).setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_preferences); menu.add(0, 350, 3, R.string.OptionMenu4).setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_more); menu.add(0, 400, 6, "Exit").setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_delete); return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu); } What should I do in API Level 5 to make this work again ? HERE IS THE FULL CODE IF YOU WANT TO TEST THIS : import java.util.Locale; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.res.Configuration; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.Menu; import android.view.MenuItem; import android.view.SubMenu; import android.widget.Toast; public class Main extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { SubMenu langMenu = menu.addSubMenu(0, 200, 2, "NL-FR").setIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_rotate); langMenu.add(1, 201, 0, "Nederlands"); langMenu.add(1, 202, 0, "Français"); return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu); } @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { switch(item.getItemId()){ case 201: Locale locale = new Locale("nl"); Locale.setDefault(locale); Configuration config = new Configuration(); config.locale = locale; getBaseContext().getResources().updateConfiguration(config, getBaseContext().getResources().getDisplayMetrics()); Toast.makeText(this, "Locale in Nederlands !", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); break; case 202: Locale locale2 = new Locale("fr"); Locale.setDefault(locale2); Configuration config2 = new Configuration(); config2.locale = locale2; getBaseContext().getResources().updateConfiguration(config2, getBaseContext().getResources().getDisplayMetrics()); Toast.makeText(this, "Locale en Français !", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); break; } return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item); } } AND HERE IS THE MANIFEST : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.cousinHub.ChangeLocale" android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0"> <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> <activity android:name=".Main" android:label="@string/app_name"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> </application> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3" /> </manifest> THIS IS WHAT I FOUND : <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="5" /> = IT WORKS JUST FINE ... <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3" /> = Menu shrinks every time you change the locale !!! as I want to keep my application accessible for users on 1.5, what should I do ??

  • debugging android app to the phone

    - by tipu
I've gone through this page: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html, My manifest has <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="true"> My phone has Menu - Settings - Applications - Development - USB Debugging checked I have gone to the control panel on my Windows XP 64 bit and installed the USB drivers given to me by the SDK installer at: android-sdk_r05-windows\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver So my computer does recognize the android device. However.. when I run an app on Eclipse, it still insists on opening it up in an emulator rather than my phone. How can I fix that?

  • Android: Custom ListAdapter extending BaseAdapter crashes on application launch.

    - by Danny
    Data being pulled from a local DB, then mapped using a cursor. Custom Adapter displays data similar to a ListView. As items are added/deleted from the DB, the adapter is supposed to refresh. The solution attempted below crashes the application at launch. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, -D @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = convertView; ViewGroup p = parent; if (v == null) { LayoutInflater vi = (LayoutInflater)context.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); v = vi.inflate(R.layout.items_row, p); } int size = mAdapter.getCount(); Log.d(TAG, "position " + position + " Size " + size); if(size != 0){ if(position < size) return mAdapter.getView(position, v, p); Log.d(TAG, "-position " + position + " Size " + size); } return null; } Errors: 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: addView(View, LayoutParams) is not supported in AdapterView 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.AdapterView.addView(AdapterView.java:461) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.LayoutInflater.inflate(LayoutInflater.java:415) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.LayoutInflater.inflate(LayoutInflater.java:320) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.LayoutInflater.inflate(LayoutInflater.java:276) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at com.xyz.abc.CustomSeparatedListAdapter.getView(CustomSeparatedListAdapter.java:90) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.AbsListView.obtainView(AbsListView.java:1273) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.ListView.makeAndAddView(ListView.java:1658) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.ListView.fillDown(ListView.java:637) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.ListView.fillFromTop(ListView.java:694) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.ListView.layoutChildren(ListView.java:1516) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.AbsListView.onLayout(AbsListView.java:1112) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.LinearLayout.setChildFrame(LinearLayout.java:1119) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.LinearLayout.layoutVertical(LinearLayout.java:998) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.LinearLayout.onLayout(LinearLayout.java:918) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6569) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.ViewRoot.performTraversals(ViewRoot.java:979) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1613) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4203) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:791) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:549) 03-23 00:14:10.392: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(718): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method)
