    Hi All, what is the best practice if I want to have a retention of let say 6 months ? I'm confused which parameter that is should/can be changes.   • Tracking down random BSOD on windows 7

    I have gotten a computer running windows 7 handed to me that randomly, several times a day, bsods with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124). Crashes happens regardless of load. I am running out of ideas for how to track this down. Analyzing the minidumps shows the crash to be in ntkrnlmp.exe/WMIADAP.exe System has plenty of power (600w) Ram checks out fine using memtest86+ over a weekend. System is clean inside. No dust build up. Temperatures stay low. As far as I know (and reliability history shows) no new drivers were installed for several months before the problems started. All drivers are now up to date. sfc /scannow reports the system as clean. CHKDSK reports the disks as clean Removing the AV (Avast) has no effect. Any more things that should be tried on windows 7 before I start replacing the hardware?

  • Tracking IP through a socks5 proxy + RDP ?

    Hi all. We were having some issues at work until we found that we are being attacked almost every day. The attacker seems pretty smart - at first he was always using proxy to hide his IP. With scanning I found that they were socks 5 proxy. The last week we had 11 attacks and every time i found the ip i scanned it with nmap. I found that ALL of the 11 different ip addresses were RDP (port 3389 open, and accept rdp connections, checked by myself on ALL of them). So here follow the questions: 1. Can we trace his real IP back through a socks5 proxy ? 2. Can we trace him if he is using some RDP server to hide his ip ? Please do not answer like "Call the owner of the proxy server/RDP..." etc. we already tried it and it didn't work, that's why I am writing here. Thank you very much.

  • Tracking down Data Execution

    I have some malware infecting one of our machines at home. It first showed up as winulty.exe. After investigating, I am of the opinion that winulty.exe itself is an uninfected file but is being modified after it has loaded into memory. Turning on Data Execution Prevention for all processes and services has confirmed this to be true. How do I track down the process responsible for this? I've used File Monitor from sysinternals.com to monitor winulty.exe and see this being accessed by the svchost.exe instance hosting most of the system services and also by dfrgntfs.exe. How do I know which service or which DLL has been infected?

  • Tracking costs within one AWS account

    I have what I'm sure is a very common problem. Our company has many projects and groups working for different clients. We do a lot of our development work in the cloud and deploy our solutions there. We have a VPC set up that isolates projects from each other in their own subnet and that VPC is getting a hardware VPN connection back to HQ. We need to keep track of the cost run up by every project. The way I currently implement this is by providing my own tools for starting and stopping instances which log which user (and thus which project) to bill the instance too. This works okay for BoxUsage costs but not for other costs. I could create a separate account for each project and use consolidated billing, this I think would allow me to pay once but track costs per "project", but I would then not be able to share common resources (like bring account B's running instances inside the same VPC). Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers C

My idea is to have a branch for each server. /etc is not the only one directory to be tracked (I won't git init in '/etc' ) As far as I could see, it is possible to init a git for a distant directory. I tried this: # mkdir -p /git/.git # cd /git # git --work-tree=/ --git-dir=/git/.git init Initialized empty Git repository in /git/.git/ 1) Creating a new branch before everything is not possible # git branch server1 fatal: Not a valid object name: 'HEAD'. 2) adding a file in master/HEAD is not possible # touch README.md # git add README.md fatal: Unable to create '//.git/index.lock': No such file or directory how should I properly setup git to track my system-config ?   • Tools for tracking disk usage

    I manage a number of linux fileservers. These all run applications written from 0-10 years ago. As sometimes happens, a machine will come close to, or run out of disk space. Reasons include applications not rotating log files, a machine with 500GB of disk producing 150GB of new files every month that were not written to tape, databases gradually increasing in size, people doing silly things...generally a bit of chaos. Anyway, when a machine unexpectedly goes from 50% to 100% full in a couple of hours, I figure out what broke (lots of "du") and delete files or contact someone. I also can look at cacti graphs to figure out what the machine's normal disk usage is (e.g. for /home). Does anyone know of any tools that will give finer grained information on historial usage than a cacti/RRD graph? Like "/home/abc/xyz increased 50GB in the last day".

    Using MS tools to get information on PCs using our software, our customers have sent several Lenovo systems which have names we simply cannot find using Google... no search results at all. Considering these names/ids are returned by querying the system directly, not asking the customer to write it down by looking at the box, this seems odd. The ones we have so far (more than one of each) are: Lenovo 2241BL9 Lenovo 6463Y4H My guess is these are Thinkpads after Lenovo took over the brand, but can anyone help me out with this detective work? edit: the 2nd one does turn up some driver downloads and this page, but it's unclear what any of that means.   • Idempotent Powershell word search/replace across documents with headers, change tracking, etc

    I've found one or two guides to doing a word search and replace across multiple documents with powershell. They work well on simple documents. However, the script ignores text in headers and footers; and if "track changes" is enabled, it replaces text which has already been replaced, resulting in multiple copies of the new text if I run the script more than once on the same file. Any clues as to how I can avoid these undesirable behaviors and make this script robust?

    Hi there. I've just taken over administration of a fairly complex firewall ruleset for a firewall box running Fedora Core 12, and there's one thing about it that is puzzling me. When I run nmap on the gateway from outside the network, I see all the expected services, but also sunrpc on port 111. The INPUT chain has DEFAULT DROP set, and there is no rule allowing port 111. As best I can tell (watching the packet counters before/during/after the scan) it's being allowed by the rule: "-m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT" but I don't understand why a brand new TCP connection would be considered RELATED or ESTABLISHED. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
