  I have names like this: $str = 'JAMES "JIMMY" SMITH' I run strtolower, then ucwords, which returns this: $proper_str = 'James "jimmy" Smith' I'd like to capitalize the second letter of words in which the first letter is a double quote. Here's the regexp. It appears strtoupper is not working - the regexp simply returns the unchanged original expression. $proper_str = preg_replace('/"([a-z])/',strtoupper('$1'),$proper_str); Any clues? Thanks!!

  I have a CSV dump from another DB that looks like this (id, name, notes): 1001,John Smith,15 Main Street 1002,Jane Smith,"2010 Rockliffe Dr. Pleasantville, IL USA" 1003,Bill Karr,2820 West Ave. The last field may contain carriage returns and commas, in which case it is surrounded by double quotes. I use this code to import CSV into my table: BULK INSERT CSVTest FROM 'c:\csvfile.csv' WITH ( FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ROWTERMINATOR = '\n' ) SQL Server 2005 bulk insert cannot figure out that carriage returns inside quotes are not row terminators. How to overcome?

• Potential issues using member's "from" address and the "sender" header

  Hi all, A major component of our application sends email to members on behalf of other members. Currently we set the "From" address to our system address and use a "Reply-to" header with the member's address. The issue is that replies from some email clients (and auto-replies/bounces) don't respect the "Reply-to" header so get sent to our system address, effectively sending them to a black hole. We're considering setting the "From" address to our member's address, and the "Sender" address to our system address. It appears this way would pass SPF and Sender-ID checks. Are there any reasons not to switch to this method? Are there any other potential issues? Thanks in advance, -Paul Here are way more details than you probably need: When the application was first developed, we just changed the "from" address to be that of the sending member as that was the common practice at the time (this was many years ago). We later changed that to have the "from" address be the member's name and our address, i.e., From: "Mary Smith" <[email protected]> With a "reply-to" header set to the member's address: Reply-To: "Mary Smith" <[email protected]> This helped with messages being mis-categorized as spam. As SPF became more popular, we added an additional header that would work in conjunction with our SPF records: Sender: <[email protected]> Things work OK, but it turns out that, in practice, some email clients and most MTA's don't respect the "Reply-To" header. Because of this, many members send messages to [email protected] instead of the desired member. So, I started envisioning various schemes to add data about the sender to the email headers or encode it in the "from" email address so that we could process the response and redirect appropriately. For example, From: "Mary Smith" <[email protected]> where the string after "messages" is a hash representing Mary Smith's member in our system. Of course, that path could lead to a lot of pain as we need to develop MTA functionality for our system address. I was looking again at the SPF documentation and found this page interesting: http://www.openspf.org/Best_Practices/Webgenerated They show two examples, that of evite.com and that of egreetings.com. Basically, evite.com is doing it the way we're doing it. The egreetings.com example uses the member's from address with an added "Sender" header. So the question is, are there any potential issues with using the egreetings method of the member's from address with a sender header? That would eliminate the replies that bad clients send to the system address. I don't believe that it solves the bounce/vacation/whitelist issue since those often send to the MAIL FROM even if Return Path is specified.

• Good PHP / MYSQL hashing solution for large number of text values

  Short descriptio: Need hashing algorithm solution in php for large number of text values. Long description. PRODUCT_OWNER_TABLE serial_number (auto_inc), product_name, owner_id OWNER_TABLE owner_id (auto_inc), owener_name I need to maintain a database of 200000 unique products and their owners (AND all subsequent changes to ownership). Each product has one owner, but an owner may have MANY different products. Owner names are "Adam Smith", "John Reeves", etc, just text values (quite likely to be unicode as well). I want to optimize the database design, so what i was thinking was, every week when i run this script, it fetchs the owner of a proudct, then checks against a table i suppose similar to PRODUCT_OWNER_TABLE, fetching the owner_id. It then looks up owner_id in OWNER_TABLE. If it matches, then its the same, so it moves on. The problem is when its different... To optimize the database, i think i should be checking against the other "owner_name" entries in OWNER_TABLE to see if that value exists there. If it does, then i should use that owner_id. If it doesnt, then i should add another entry. Note that there is nothing special about the "name". as long as i maintain the correct linkagaes AND make the OWNER_TABLE "read-only, append-new" type table - I should be able create a historical archive of ownership. I need to do this check for 200000 entries, with i dont know how many unique owner names (~50000?). I think i need a hashing solution - the OWNER_TABLE wont be sorted, so search algos wont be optimal. programming language is PHP. database is MYSQL.

• What approaches exist to setting up continent/country/city drop down menus?

  How easy (or difficult) is it to have a Continent/Country/City drop down menu? Where one select from Drop Down Menus (for example): 1 - Europe 2 - UK 3 - London and then writes the Province/Area (for example: Essex). Realistically, how long should it take an experienced web developer to write the code of the above, as well as to link this selection to a Browse function and database storing? I do not have a geographical database yet and I am wondering what the fastest and cheapest way to add it to the drop down menu is. Is there any way to get that geographical database for free? I can see this type of geographical drop down menu in thousands of websites, but I am struggling as to how to implement it ASAP. Follow Up: Tks All x your answers and comments so far. I hear what you are saying. I understand that there are rare occasions of Countries with multiple (same) name Cities and that it might be disputable whether a Country belongs to a certain Continent/Region or not (see Russia x example, Europe or Asia?). • Flash in browsers does not play sound accurately using Pulse network audio

  I use PulseAudio to send sound over the LAN to an audio server. When playing any Flash media in Firefox or Chrome, the sound flutters, as if the volume were going up and down every second. The problem does not exhibit with any other software, and I think it's specific to how Flash interacts with my sound set up. How do I get Flash to play nice with the PulseAudio network sound server? Update I have discovered that I can stop the sound fluttering if I follow these steps: Start a Flash video Run pulseaudio --kill on the server Wait about 7 seconds After this, the PulseAudio server automatically respawns, and the sound in the Flash video is perfect. The problem now, though, is that I have to do this every time I start a Flash video. This is obviously not desireable. So, the question is, how do I make whatever it is that makes the sound work when I go through these steps stick so that I don't have to do them? Also, I've uploaded some PulseAudio log output to Pastebin, taken while attempting to play a Flash video, if that helps. I've tried to get logging details from Flash, but despite installing and enabling Flash for debugging, it has not generated any ouput at all. Details I have uploaded an example video of the problem onto Youtube. In the video you can see the opening of a Ted Talk video, and the sound flutters as it plays. The video also stutters while playing back. Here are my sound device output settings:

• Hyperlinked, externalized source code documentation

  Why do we still embed natural language descriptions of source code (i.e., the reason why a line of code was written) within the source code, rather than as a separate document? Given the expansive real-estate afforded to modern development environments (high-resolution monitors, dual-monitors, etc.), an IDE could provide semi-lock-step panels wherein source code is visually separated from -- but intrinsically linked to -- its corresponding comments. For example, developers could write source code comments in a hyper-linked markup language (linking to additional software requirements), which would simultaneously prevent documentation from cluttering the source code. What shortcomings would inhibit such a software development mechanism? A mock-up to help clarify the question: When the cursor is at a particular line in the source code (shown with a blue background, above), the documentation that corresponds to the line at the cursor is highlighted (i.e., distinguished from the other details). As noted in the question, the documentation would stay in lock-step with the source code as the cursor jumps through the source code. A hot-key could switch between "documentation mode" and "development mode". Potential advantages include: More source code and more documentation on the screen(s) at once Ability to edit documentation independently of source code (regardless of language?) Write documentation and source code in parallel without merge conflicts Real-time hyperlinked documentation with superior text formatting Quasi-real-time machine translation into different natural languages Every line of code can be clearly linked to a task, business requirement, etc. Documentation could automatically timestamp when each line of code was written (metrics) Dynamic inclusion of architecture diagrams, images to explain relations, etc. Single-source documentation (e.g., tag code snippets for user manual inclusion). Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools April 2010 Refresh Booya... Updates to Silverlight Multi-binding support Stefan Olson points up a SL4 change to Multi-binding support that he had previously blogged about. He shows the previous non-working example, and what you have to do to make it work now. Using XAML to create a custom wallpaper image for your mobile device David Anson has a solution for those pesky lost devices, and let me go on the record right now saying if anyone finds a WP7 phone laying around, just call me, it's mine :) [think that'd work??] ... ok, David's solution is a WPF app "MobileDeviceHomeScreenMaker" that you get the info set and it produces a png you then put on your device. • How will people upgrade from 12.10 to 14.04 after 13.04 is EOL?

  Looking at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases 13.04 will reach EOL in January 2014, while 12.10 will reach EOL in April 2014, therefore if a 12.10 user hasn't upgraded to 13.04 and subsequently to 13.10, there will be a 3 month period where a 12.10 user has a supported version of Ubuntu, but will be unable to upgrade. I asked this question a number of months ago and the suggestion was that the hope was that there would be an upgrade path from 12.10 to 14.04. Could somebody confirm whether this is still the case, or if not what the plans are for 12.10 users after 13.04 becomes EOL. Edited for clarification The particular issue I was concerned about is that once 13.04 goes EOL, a 12.10 user would in theory lose the ability to upgrade once the 13.04 repo's are removed from the normal release repository. Using the old releases method would be a way around the issue, however would make it more complicated for a less experienced user. An alternative could be for the 13.04 repo's to be left available for the 3 month interim period so that a 12.10 version could still be upgraded to 13.04 and subsequently onto 13.10, however that doesn't seem an optimal solution in that users may consider that it meant that support for 13.04 was being continued. If a direct upgrade from 12.10 to 14.04 was to made available, this would only be available once 14.04 was released and still leaves the issue of the 3 months between January and April 2014 were there may be some confusion. I suspect that its not going to affect a significant number of users, if somebody has upgraded from 12.04LTS to 12.10, in all probability, they'll have continued to upgrade to 13.04 and upwards because they'd made the choice to use current rather than LTS releases. It would just be useful to have some clarification of the situation which people can be referred to in advance of 13.04 going EOL rather than hitting the cut off point and it being too late for users to make the decision and being left in limbo.
