  • looking for a good programming problem solving tool

    Years ago when I was in school my computer science department used a website that had many different problem solving questions typically used in computer programming. They were ordered in difficulty and you were presented the solution after you attempted the problem. The site was used in competitions and was very useful for training purposes. Since I am trying to brush up on my algorithm skills, a good tool like this would be very useful. Does anyone know of a site similar to this in "modern" times?

    If you are an IT Professional, a new education tool introduced by Microsoft is the MS Desktop Player. Today we take a look at what it has to offer, from Webcasts, White Papers, Training Videos, and more. Microsoft Desktop Player You can run the player from the website (shown here) or download the application for use on your local machine (link below). It allows you to easily access MS training and information in a central interface. To get the Desktop version, download the .msi file from the site… And run through the installer…   When you first start out, enter in if you’re an IT Pro, Developer and your role. Then you can decide on the resources you’re looking for such as Exchange Server, SharePoint, Windows 7, Security…etc. Here is an example of checking out a Podcast on Office 2007 setup and configuration from TechNet radio. Under Settings you can customize your search results and local resources. This helps you narrow down pertinent information for your needs. If you find something you really like, hover the pointer over the screen and you can add it to your library, share it, send feedback, and check for additional resources. If you don’t need items in your library they can be easily deleted. Under the News tab you get previews of Microsoft news items, clicking on it will open the full article in a separate browser. While you’re watching a presentation you can show or hide the details related to it. Conclusion Microsoft Desktop Player is currently in Beta, but has a lot of cool features to offer for your learning needs. You can easily find Podcasts, Webcasts, and more without having to browse all over the place. In our experience we didn’t notice any bugs, and what it offers so far works well.   • Moving from Test Automation to Development

    I'm in an interesting quandary. I've been doing test automation using QTP for about 1.5 years, and am in the slow process of switching to a developer role in my same company. I also begin my Master's in CS this fall. An old friend is trying to recruit me for a Sr. Test Automation position that could potentially pay me $23k more for the exact same thing I do now. But obviously I would defer moving to development. The new company is much more technical overall (I would be moving from financial services to industrial automation, and they have MANY more software dev roles available. I know traditionally QA type jobs carry an odd "danger" tag, but test automation is really a different beast. Does anyone have any experience moving from test automation to development? Does the QA stigma exist? The extra $$ would be nice, but not at the expense of my career. I should note that my Master's will be on Systems/parallel programming, so one thought is that I'll get automatic consideraton for development upon completing my Master's. I also work 6hrs/wk doing game development with a friend.

  • Running Teamsite User Admin tool IWUSERADM.exe from ASP.NET

    It has really been a head scratching task for me. I 've tried many options but nothing worked. Finally I found a workaround on google to achive this by TaskScheduler. PROBLEM When we run Teamsite user administration command line tool IWUSERADM.exe though ASP.Net it gives following error: Application popup: cmd.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. CAUSE No specific cause, it seems to be a bug, supposed to be resolved with this Microsoft patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960266. and there is nothing related to permission issue, y web application is impersonated with an administrator account. off course running a bat file from dmin account is a potential secury threat but for this scenario lets conifned our discussion to run the command line tool. RESOLUTION I have not tried this patch as I have not permitted to run this patch on server. Below are the steps to achive the requirement. 1/ Create a batch file which runs the IWUSERADM.exe.         echo - Add Teamsite User    CD E:\Appli\GN00\iw-home\bin    iwuseradm add-user %1 2/ Temporarily create a schedule task and run  the .bat file by scheduled task by ASP.Net code using TaskScheduler http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/tsnewlib.aspx. 3/ Here is the function: private int AddTeamsiteUser(string strBatchFilePath, string strUser) { //Get a ScheduledTasks object for the local computer.     Among the 11 proven practices for more effective, efficient peer code review, diff annotation seems to be the one particularly well suited to tool assistance. The article is written by the architect of SmartBear's CodeCollaborator, so he of course recommends using that. Does anyone know of any alternatives? I can't think of anything that would be even close to paper+pen+marker in pure developer efficiency when it comes to explaining a piece of code.

  • New Book - Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple

    It's nice to see another ADF book out there, this one from Sten Vesteli titled "Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple" comes from Packet Publishing Unlike other ADF books out there, this one doesn't aim to teach you Oracle ADF, but rather focuses on the right way to structure and manage a project that leverages ADF. This is a welcomed addition to the bookshelf for people who are looking into ADF based development. One thing I find is that some organization just start developing an ADF application without first doing much planning, something that is understandable given that it is very easy to start building a prototype with ADF and then just grow it into a full blown application. However, as the book points out, doing a bit of planning before you delve into the actual project development can save you a lot of time in the future. For example it is much better to have the right breakdown and structure of your project to allow you to do efficient team development right out of the gate, then to find out 1 year down the road that you are dealing with one monolithic size project which is hard to manage. The book touches on such topics as project organization (workspaces, projects, packages), planning your infrastructure (templates, framework classes), coding standards, team structure, etc. It also covers various aspects of application lifecycle management such as versioning, build, testing, deployment and managing requirements and tasks and how all of those are done when using JDeveloper and Oracle ADF. It's nice to see that the book covers working with Oracle Team Productivity Center - a solution that might not be getting the exposure it deserves. The book also has some chapters about security, internalization and customization of applications both with MDS and with ADF Faces skins (and it even covers the brand new skin editor). Overall I think this is definitely a book you should read if you are about to start your way on a new enterprise scale ADF application. Taking into account the topics that the book discusses before you start your work will save you time and effort down the road. By the way, don't forget that as an OTN member you can get discount on this and other books.

  • any online service and/or application to develop a story line for an adventure game?

    I with a bunch of friend were talking about an adventure game. there will be too many possibilities in the game and the player can pick from wide varity of choices at each stage to do somthing. there will be consequences for each decision and they may or may not end the story. the result would be somthing like (picture from flashforward series S01E17)or if any of you watched hereos season 1 there is also similar time lines represented as strings in isaac mandez workshop. sorry for bad quality examples but right now I can't think of any better one. do you know any website or application which we can use to create the timeline? these features the least required ones: the ability to represent events as boxes. the ability to connect distant events to each other. the ability to move events on a scene freely the ability to expand the scene easily there should be some color options for the lines representing connections between events easily shareing the idea with one another it's much more better to have a WYSIWYG editor easily explore in the large scene of events in the end if you know any application which could let me create a board just like the one in my sample picture and share it whith other freinds it could help us a lot.
