• Licensing SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services w/ SharePoint 2010

  Here's my situation: I have 1 VM that is running SharePoint 2010 SP1. I have a different physical server that is running SQL Server 2008 R2 that hosts all the configuration and content database for SharePoint. Now, we want to start providing BI capabilities to our users with SharePoint and SQL Server. With it's new features, 2012 is the obvious way to go. To support this, I'm looking to build a new VM that will have SQL Server 2012 installed w/ Analysis services and SSIS, which will be the platform that gets our data from our Oracle databases, puts it in a warehouse hosted by the SQL 2012 instance, and is put into cubes. What's getting me about the platform is licensing for Reporting Services and PowerPivot. My plan was to install SSRS and PowerPivot on the current SharePoint server. But my understanding of the licensing means that instead of the new SQL server being licensed, I'd have to license both new server, and the SharePoint server. Conversely, I could install SharePoint onto the SQL server, and only have to get a second SP license, but then I'd have the added complexity of deploying a separated application server, and combines my data and application servers. Is my licensing understanding correct, or can I have SSRS and PowerPivot installed separately without incurring additional licensing costs?

• VMware + SQL Server - sqlserver.exe not using both CPU cores

  Hi, I am working on a virtual machine that runs SQL Server Express (as part of Sage Line 50 Manufacturing). The details are as follows: Physical Server (host machine) - Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.1GHz - 4GB RAM - VMDK image stored on RAID-5 500GB SATA drives (7200RPM) - Running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit - VMware Server 2 Virtual Machine - Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Allocated 2 vCPU's and 2GB RAM - Using 100GB pre-allocated flat VMDK file The problem I have is that there is process that runs in SQL Server that is CPU intensive. On the old physical server that we migrated to the virtual machine from, this would utilise both CPU cores so the sqlserver.exe process would be running 100% on each of the CPU cores. On the virtual machine, it only seems to use one of the two CPU cores, meaning that the process is much slower to run. Question Is there a way to force SQL Server (sqlserver.exe process) to use both of the CPU cores, and distribute it's load between them? Is this a VMware setting that needs changing to allow processes to use both cores?

  have a terminal server 2003 that about 50users can use, users are saving documents on the desktop, today users complain that documents on the desktop is missing, no upgrades or changes has been done the error is that the server reverted to load items the folder name "Desktop" instaed of using the local language "Skrivbord" (swedish for desktop) So the files are still on the server located under the users swedish folder name, but server does not load it, server however does load files located under the English folder name how can the terminal server from one day to another just change from where it loads the user profile desktop files?

• Cloning a WebCenter Portal Managed Server

  I had to run some tests on a WebCenter Portal application deployed in a cluster. I've got a development VM with WebCenter PS4 (this also works on PS5) and I was trying to figure out how could I easily add a new managed server to my single-node domain, and make it a cluster. Creating the machine and cluster are a piece of cake, you can do it pretty quick through WLS Console. Now, you'd guess that using the clone option on WLS Console would do the magic of cloning an existing instance, right? Well, it does, but all you get is an "empty" managed server: with no target libraries.  It was a good surprise to find that WebCenter provides a way of cloning an existing WebCenter Portal managed server through a simple WLST command: cloneWebCenterManagedServer  This is a screenshot of my starting point. I want to clone WC_CustomPortal managed server: These are the steps to clone my WC_CustomPortal managed server: 1. In the command line, invoke WLST. It should be on <ORACLE_HOME_for_component>/common/bin/wlst.sh. In my case, it is ./product/Middleware/WebCenterPortal/common/bin/wlst.sh 2. Connect to the Admin Server:  connect ('<wls_admin_username>','<password>','t3://<server>:<port>') 3. • Schema objects not visible in SQL Server Management Studio 2008

  I'm experiencing a weird problem with a SQL login. When I connect to the server in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (2008) using this account, I cannot see any of the tables, stored procedures etc. that this account should have access to on a particular database. When I connect to the same server within Visual Studio (2008) with the same account everything is there. When I connect with the same account on a Virtual Machine everything is there. I've also had a co-worker connect to the server using the same login and he's able to view everything as well. I use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio all day connecting to different servers and databases and I've never experienced this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can diagnose this problem? I've checked to make sure I don't have any Table filters etc. There's several database on this server and I'm able to see the correct tables that this account has access to in the other databases just fine. Running this query lists the tables I'm expecting to see. SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES

• Assigning Javascript click callbacks to Flash elements?

  Bear in mind I'm a web developer but not a Flash developer and know little about Flash. I work with people who are the opposite and know very little about web development. Maybe someone who is good with both can answer this question? I work for an Advertisement software company and we are having fits with our Ad click-throughs opening tabs vs popups in different browsers. Tabs are preferred becaus pop-ups are subject to blockers. I read that tabs will always be opened if it is a callback triggered by a user click. This is fine with me. Problem is the Flash developers, using their external interface, are trying to open the new window when the Flash ad gets clicked themselves. So even though it's user initiated Flash behooves upon itself to open the website. I think this may be why they end up being popups instead of new tabs. Is there a way external to Flash using Javascript to assign the click events to Flash elements so that only new tabs will ever be opened by clicking the Flash element? Or a way through Flash can assign Javascript callbacks to its elements? Thanks!

• How do I install the newest Flash beta for Minefield on 64-bit Ubuntu?

  Hi, I'm using a fully updated Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit which is pretty much bog standard except I'm using Minefield from the Mozilla daily PPA in addition to Firefox as provided by Ubuntu. I want to try the newest beta of Flash (10.3 as of writing). The installation instructions simply say "drop libflashplayer.so into the plugin folder of your browser". This the 32-bit version. Currently I'm using Flash as provided by the package flashplugin-installer (ver. 10.2.152.27ubuntu0.10.10.1). Going to about:plugins in Minefield/Firefox says the version of Flash I'm running is 10.2 r152 and the file responsible is npwrapper.libflashplayer.so. I have two files with that name on my system. One is /usr/share/ubufox/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so which is a broken link to /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so. The other is /var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so (note var instead of usr). I also have a file simply called libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/. So it seems Firefox/Minefield gets its Flash plugin from a file that doesn't exist, and replacing libflashplayer.so with the one in the archive from Adobe has no effect. Since I want to try the 32-bit version I have to use the wrapper. The only way I know how is through the flashplugin-installer package. How would I go about installing the newest 32-bit beta Flash if possible at all? And where is "the plugin folder of my browser"?

• SQL SERVER – Introduction to FIRST _VALUE and LAST_VALUE – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012

  SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical functions FIRST_VALUE() and LAST_VALUE(). This function returns first and last value from the list. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I’d like to attempt to explain its function through a brief example. Instead of creating a new table, I will be using the AdventureWorks sample database as most developers use that for experiment purposes. Now let’s have fun following query: USE AdventureWorks GO SELECT s.SalesOrderID,s.SalesOrderDetailID,s.OrderQty, FIRST_VALUE(SalesOrderDetailID) OVER (ORDER BY SalesOrderDetailID) FstValue, LAST_VALUE(SalesOrderDetailID) OVER (ORDER BY SalesOrderDetailID) LstValue FROM Sales.SalesOrderDetail s WHERE SalesOrderID IN (43670, 43669, 43667, 43663) ORDER BY s.SalesOrderID,s.SalesOrderDetailID,s.OrderQty GO The above query will give us the following result: What’s the most interesting thing here is that as we go from row 1 to row 10, the value of the FIRST_VALUE() remains the same but the value of the LAST_VALUE is increasing. The reason behind this is that as we progress in every line – considering that line and all the other lines before it, the last value will be of the row where we are currently looking at. To fully understand this statement, see the following figure: This may be useful in some cases; but not always. However, when we use the same thing with PARTITION BY, the same query starts showing the result which can be easily used in analytical algorithms and needs. I have used PARTITION BY SalesOrderID in my query. This will create small windows of the resultset from the original resultset and will follow the logic or FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE in this resultset. Well, this is just an introduction to these functions. In the future blog posts we will go deeper to discuss the usage of these two functions. • SQL SERVER – Saturday Fun Puzzle with SQL Server DATETIME2 and CAST

  Note: I have used SQL Server 2012 for this small fun experiment. Here is what we are going to do. We will run the script one at time instead of running them all together and try to guess the answer. I am confident that many will get it correct but if you do not get correct, you learn something new. Let us create database and sample table. CREATE DATABASE DB2012 GO USE DB2012 GO CREATE TABLE TableDT (DT1 VARCHAR(100), DT2 DATETIME2, DT1C AS DT1, DT2C AS DT2); INSERT INTO TableDT (DT1, DT2) SELECT GETDATE(), GETDATE() GO There are four columns in the table. The first column DT1 is regular VARCHAR and second DT2 is DATETIME2. Both of the column are been populated with the same data as I have used the function GETDATE(). Now let us do the SELECT statement and get the result from both the columns. Before running the query please guess the answer and write it down on the paper or notepad. Question 1: Guess the resultset SELECT DT1, DT2 FROM TableDT GO Now once again run the select statement on the same table but this time retrieve the computed columns only. Once again I suggest you write down the result on the notepad. Question 2: Guess the resultset SELECT DT1C, DT2C FROM TableDT GO Now here is the best part. Let us use the CAST function over the computed columns. Here I do want you to stop and guess the answer for sure. If you have not done it so far, stop do it, believe me you will like it. Question 3: Guess the resultset SELECT CAST(DT1C AS DATETIME2) CDT1C, CAST(DT2C AS DATETIME2) CDT1C FROM TableDT GO Now let us inspect all the answers together and see how many of you got it correct. • Is flash game development not considered 'proper' game development?

  I've come across this a couple of times. That flash game development is not 'proper' game development when compared to XNA or even Unity. Mentioned here: Need guidelines for studying Game Development Also here in some comments : Where to start with game development? This judgement also befalls java, according to some. Is it because in flash its so easy to draw graphics and to import and add on to the stage any element we want and also because flash needs a 'container program' to run and others don't? But flash is by far way easier to 'distribute' than any other of those mentioned above. Maybe except for iphone or android games.

• How to produce assets effectively on large Flash game projects?

  I have been working on Flash games professionally for two years now and somehow, having our artists producing assets the right way is one of our biggest challenge. More precisely, it is very hard to have them following any kind of structure and/or standards, nor taking into consideration performance. I would say also the most of our issues concerns UI and related animations. Our current workflow is (on a Facebook hidden object game) : Artists produce PSD and animate prototypes in Flash Artists re-organize their FLA files to be a bit more "programmer friendly" Programmers retouches assets until they have the right structure and export classes inside a SWC, from Flash Programmers try to improve performances, sometimes degrading the quality of game graphics Our main idea is to hire somebody dedicated to prepare assets for programmers but I am really looking forward to improving the pipeline. I was wondering if you guys have tips of any kind to improve this workflow, whether it be team organization, training, tools or tips with Flash. Any explanation on your asset pipeline is well appreciated too.

• What to use for simple cross-platform games instead of Flash?

  In short, for simple games: Is Flash still a good option for browser-based PC clients? It still has 90%+ penetration. What is a good alternative for mobile devices? It HTML5 + JavaScript the choice for mobile? Or does one have to learn a new native language for each target platform? (Android, Apple, Windows Phone)... If you desire further background: There are more blogs about the official demise of mobile Flash than I can count, along with endless useless and vitriolic comments. I'm actually trying to do something practical: build simple games that can be served accross multiple platforms. Several months ago I plopped down $1100 for CS5.5 Web and am wading into Flash. Bummer. My question to people who actually develop simple games and apps: What platform should I use instead? Is Flash still a sensible platform for web-served PC users? For example, let's say I build a simple arcade game that I would like to serve as an app to mobile users and as a browser-based game to PC users. Should I still invest the time and effort to learn and develop in Flash for the PC users, while building a parallel code set in some other language for mobile users? My games are simple enough that it would be annoying but not inconceivable to maintain parallel code sets.

• Is it possible to connect Flash applications to a server build with Delphi?

  I have developed a client/server application using Firebird and developed with Delphi, having some clients that is also in Delphi, which I know how to do. But what I want to know is if it is possible to connect some Flash applications as clients to the Delphi developed server? The Flash applications must be able to access data in the database and also be able to update and insert records. Can something like this be done? Im using Delphi XE2 and the Flash is written with Actionscript 3
