• DataNucleus Enhancer flakey?

  I'm creating a GWT app in Google App Engine, and using Google data store. Does anybody else have the problem of the DataNucleus being flakey as all get out? I can save a class, and DataNucleus will do it's thing just fine. If I change ANYTHING in the class (even adding whitespace) and then save, I get the following error: DataNucleus Enhancer completed with success for 0 classes. Timings : input=37 ms, enhance=0 ms, total=37 ms. Consult the log for full details DataNucleus Enhancer completed and no classes were enhanced. Consult the log for full details Once I clean my project, DataNucleus is happy again. Is this common when using eclipse? Is there a workaround?

  I heard lots of good opinions about Python language. They say it's mature, expressive etc... Are there any production-ready web application frameworks in Python. By "production ready" I mean : supports objective-relational mapping with caching and declarative desciption (like JPA, Hibernate etc..) controls oriented user interface support - no HTML templates but something like JSF (RichFaces, Icefaces) or GWT, Vaadin, ZK component decomposition and dependency injection (like EJB or Spring) unit and integration testing good IDE support clustering, modularity etc (like Terracota, OSGi etc..) there are successful applications written in it by companies like IBM, Oracle etc (I mean real business applications not Twitter) could have commercial support Is it possible at all in Python world ? Or only choices are : use Python and write everything from the bottom (too expensice) stick to JEE buy .NET stack

• Which web Tier Framework for a public commercial website with heavy load ?

  Hello everyone, As a part of an enterprise architecture exercise, i need to find a java-based framework filling these constraints : heavy (i think) load : 5000 concurrent connections widely known : can't be too exotic, the contractors would be too high priced. relatively easy to use : developpement time must be reasonnable must be as compliant as possible with the css/html layout produced by a designer Must look like "web 2.0" from the marketing point of view. What i learned from my limited experience is : jsf : 1, don't know. 2, 3 ok. 4 not ok (at least not without huge effort) wicket : 1, not really. 2, 3 and 4 ok. gwt : 1, don't know. 2, 3 ok. 4 not ok (but more ok than jsf) others : not really "web 2.0" or not really known I'm really junior, so my ideas about those frameworks are probably wrong, that's why i come to you, stackoverflowees.   I have to write a mashup application for an university course and I have to use some APIs, but I need to choose by myself what to use and what the final application should do. Unfortunately I never made an application like this, so I'm not sure what to do... I don't want to code a stupid app which uses google maps' APIs since the web seems to be full of stuff like this. Have you got any suggestion for me? Is there any mashup web app you want that's still not there?? • Do Any Client-Side JavaScript Frameworks Integrate Well With Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js?

  I'm building an webapp using Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js on the backend. Do any of the popular front-end frameworks (Agility, Angular, Backbone, Closure, Dojo, Ember, GWT, jQuery, Knockback, Knockout, Spine, YUI, etc) integrate well with this backend for "real-time" applications? I want my application to have a very "real-time" feel. Specifically, when a user submits a form I want the information to be sent using web sockets to the backend for validation and (if validation passes) to be updated in the database. Then, the server-side will use web sockets to send a confirmation that the data was saved or some list of errors. I will use the server's response to update the page using JavaScript. I know all this can be done with any of the listed frameworks. I'm interested in features of particular frameworks that will help the framework integrate better with the Node-based backend than the other frameworks.

• How to do manual DI with deep object graphs and many dependencies properly

  I believe this questions has been asked in some or the other way but i'm not getting it yet. We do a GWT project and my project leader disallowed to use GIN/Guice as an DI framework (new programmers are not going to understand it, he argued) so I try to do the DI manually. Now I have a problem with deep object graphs. The object hierarchy from the UI looks like this: AppPresenter-DashboardPresenter-GadgetPresenter-GadgetConfigPresenter The GadgetConfigPresenter way down the object hierarchy tree has a few dependencies like CustomerRepository, ProjectRepository, MandatorRepository, etc. So the GadgetPresenter which creates the GadgetConfigPresenter also has these dependencies and so on, up to the entry point of the app which creates the AppPresenter. Is this the way manual DI is supposed to work? doesn't this mean that I create all dependencies at boot time even I don't need them? would a DI framework like GIN/Guice help me here?

  I have been given a nasty wake up a while ago when I discovered that my 10 years of experience was really equivalent of about 4 (got trapped in a big company doing the same thing over and over without realizing it) and is now paying a huge price. Question 1: I did servlets/JSP programming back in the day (2001-2003). Since then there have been libraries like GWT, YUI, etc. Is JSP still the preferred way of building web apps using Java? Question 2: Because I enjoyed what I was doing and needed to pay the bills, I didn't realize that the ground below me has shifted. How do avoid this in the future? My years of C system programming doesn't seem to matter a lot now to the young guys who talk about design patterns.

Any thoughts on where/how to start ? Initially, I would prefer to have it as a standalone application, later develop it as eclipse plugin.   I would assume that this question would have been asked in different ways already, but I could not find one so posting it. Sorry if its a repetition The basic idea which I am trying to explore is to design a common Ajax framework/API for our application. The main requirement is to have a common framework in the product which every module in the application can call whenever it needs to provide Ajax behavior. We basically have a page based application and not everything would be Ajax for sure. Mostly it will be smaller pieces of work which Ajax will handle. We have used GWT and it works great. But we have some constraints because of which certain areas in the application need to build standard jsp and html pages only I know little bit about dwr and it looks very promising (as even answered by some people). I wanted to know what are the other possible frameworks like dwr which I can evaluate too, before making the decision

• Maven: Multiple class with the same path implemented in different jar

  I'm running into trouble with having multiple class with the same path (i.e. same name, same package!!!). For some reason, gwt-dev comes with its own version of org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl and javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory. At the same time, spring also depends on these classes but from different jar. I don't know what should be, but look like xalan & xml-api are the two dependencies that spring depends on (these dependency are optional) Funny thing is that eclipse can run the same code (it's a unit test) without problem, but surefire cannot. So I guess the problem is due to the way each runner consider the priority of each jar. Now come to the question: How can I setup my POM so that I can sure that when ever any code running inside my app, then class from a jar will be selected over class from other jar? Thanks.

  I have a following piece of JSON: \/Date(1293034567877)\/ which is a result of this .NET code: var obj = DateTime.Now; var serializer = new System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer(); serializer.Serialize(obj).Dump(); Now the problem I am facing is how to create a Date object from this in JavaScript. All I could find was incredible regex solution (many containing bugs). It is hard to believe there is no elegant solution as this is all in JavaScrip, I mean JavaScript code trying to read JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) which is supposed to be a JavaScript code and at this moment it turns out it's not cause JavaScript cannot do a good job here. I've also seen some eval solutions which I could not make to work (besides being pointed out as security threat). Is there really no way to do it in an elegant way? • Handling Session ID with Spring

  Hi, I'm trying to build a Spring server for GWT (you can think of it as of Javascript AJAX client). But I can't decide on one point of architecture. How should session be created and used? The obvious easiest way - is to use HTTP sessions (cookies and stuff). Looks fine, but I think that sending session ID separate from the headers would be better (SOAP style). So, what is better: getMyPetsName(String sessionID, int petID) or getMyPetsName(int petID) + session ID through HTTP header (cookies or something). Another question is, if I use the first way (which I like more) - how do I handle session in Spring? I'm really newbie in Spring, and googling did not help.   I want users to be able to log into my website with OpenID, but I don't know which library to use. I know which ones are out there, but I would like to know which one would be best. I'm running JOnAS, but no web framework (no Spring, Struts, GWT, etc.). (Please don't chastise me for not using a web framework. I have my reasons.) For what it's worth, my web site is broken into multiple WARs, and I would prefer something that works well in that situation, but that's not a big deal.   I have to develop a online business software solution (similar to ERP) for a company to manage the information exchange for internal use and with external partners. It should be online. What technology should I use, I have checked framewroks like: Flex, Silverlight, Google/GWT, sencha (ExtJS), jQuery, DoJo, Telereik, Infrajistics and others similar. But they seam to be very low level programming. May be this is advantage for other projects, where you need more flexibility, but this project is stright forward. I need something more focused on business software (tables, forms, processes) where and eventually more efficient with less coding, or something I can save time. Is force.com an option? But I can not install this on the customer's servers... Do you have any ideas for me for a web based framework focused on business applications?

  Hello! We sell photoalbums which our customers create theirselves using a client album editor program (for Windows). Now we are going to develop an online program so customers could create their albums in the browser: upload photos and edit them. This is going to be a rich browser application with full graphics support. The problem is what technology to use? Our server application is build in Java and we think about Java Applets so that we could reuse some Java-code. We are also not very familiar with Flash. But some people say that Flash is preferred. Maybe there're some modern technologies now? SVG or some Google technologies (like GWT but with graphics support) or something? What do you think? Thanks in advance!

• Which are the current/emerging desktop development technologies worth looking into?

  Greetings, With all the existing development towards web development and emerging technologies in that area, I'm left wondering; what is a state of the art way to implement desktop applications in this day and age? If you were to start a new application of considerable size from scratch what technology would you invest your efforts in (focusing on cross platform portability, decent performance and interoperability with existing standards)? I've looked into the Adobe Air platform which appears quite impressive but seems rather limited to support a large application. Would something like Java/SWT still be the sensible choice? Do things like GWT fit the bill? Thanks P.S. I'm leaving my question a bit open-ended in an effort to gather diverse answers. Surely this a subjective matter and there is no right and wrong answer.

• Which Java Web Framework allows Cross-Domain Javascripting (http proxy) ?

  So just a quick intro, I am starting to explore Vaadin, and it's absolutely perfect. Previously, I was juggling PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Jquery for designing rich client web application. It didn't work out too well, as I've burnt out from trying to fix cross browser issues (aka get-it-to-work-on-IE-damn-it), handling server-side, client-side, and building a robust communication between the two tier had lot of code not related to application logic....by the time I was burnt out, only tiny bit of application logic was implemented. Vaadin seems like the answer to my problem as it only requires Java and built on top of GWT. However, I am curious how I can incorporate Cross-Domain Javascripting ? Back in LAMP environment, I had a CGI proxy script that loaded external URL, and injected JS into the proxy-loaded page. I used the CGI proxy script, as it rendered Javascript of the external URL well. Is there a class or package for Java or a specific Java web framework similiar to Vaadin that makes this possible ? My question is often we are writing core service layer separately from web/UI layer so we can reuse same services for different UI layer/technology. So practically is it possible to reuse same core layer services without any changes/addition in API with different kind of UI technologies/layers. For e.g. same core service layer with UI technology which supports synchronized request response (e.g. jsp etc.) and non synchronize or event driven UI technology (e.g Ajax, Flex, GWT etc.) or with multiple devices like (computers, mobiles, pdas etc.). Personally I feel its very tough to write core service layer without any knowledge of UI. Looking for thoughts from other people.

• Beginner servlet question: accessing files in a .war, which path?

  When a third-party library I'm using tries to access a file, I'm getting "Error opening ... file ... (No such file or directory)" even though I KNOW the file is in the WAR. I've tried both packaged (.war) and "exploded" (directory) deployment, and the file is definitely there. I've tried setting full permissions on it too. It's on Unix (Ubuntu). File is war/dict/index.sense and the error is "dict/index.sense (No such file or directory)". It works fine on my Windows computer when running in hosted mode as a GWT app from Eclipse, just not when I transfer it to the Unix machine for deployment. My question is: has anybody experienced this before and/or are there differences in relative path that I should consider i.e. what's the root path for relative file access in a war?

• Manipulate DOM before it is shown to the user?

  Hi, I'm not too familiar with javascript, is there a way to manipulate the DOM before the page is displayed to the user? I'm using GWT which makes you create the page elements via javascript. This is kind of convenient, but it appears that all the javascript code is executed after the page is first shown to the user. This has the effect of showing the page as a blank white screen, then all the UI elements popping onto screen. The effect is really apparent when switching between pages. If I were using php or jsp, it looks like the page ui elements are already prerendered and the browser won't show a blank white screen before display. So is there any hook in javascript where we can manipulate the DOM before the browser clears out the contents of the last page shown? Thanks

• Why is Hibernate not loading a column?

  I've got an entity with a few properties that gets used a lot in my Hibernate/GWT app. For the most part, everything works fine, but Hibernate refuses to load one of the properties. It doesn't appear in the query, despite being annotated correctly in the entity. The relevant portion of the entity: @Column(name="HasSubSlots") @Type(type="yes_no") public boolean hasSubSlotSupport() { return hasSubSlotSupport; } And the generated SQL query: Hibernate: /* load entities.DeviceModel */ select devicemode0_.DevModel as DevModel1_0_, devicemode0_.InvModelName as InvModel2_1_0_ from DeviceModels devicemode0_ where devicemode0_.DevModel=? Despite the fact that I refer to that property, it's never loaded, lazily or not, and the getter always returns false. Any ideas on how I can dig deeper into this, or what might be wrong?
