• Making it GREAT! Oracle Partners Building Apps Workshop with UX and ADF in UK

  Yes, making is what it's all about. This time, Oracle Partners in the UK were making great looking usable apps with the Oracle Applications Development Framework (ADF) and user experience (UX) toolkit. And what an energy-packed and productive event at the Oracle UK, Thames Valley Park, location it was. Partners learned the fundamentals of enterprise applications UX, why it's important, all about visual design, how to wireframe designs, and then how to build their already-proven designs in ADF. There was a whole day on mobile apps, learning about mobile design principles, free mobile UX and ADF resources from Oracle, and then trying it out. The workshop wrapped up with the latest Release 7 simplified UIs, Mobilytics, and other innovations from Oracle, and a live demo of a very neat ADF Mobile Android app built by an Oracle contractor. And, what a fun two days both Grant Ronald of ADF and myself had in running the workshop with such a great audience, too! I particularly enjoyed the wireframing and visual design sessions interaction; and seeing some outstanding work done by partners. Of note from the UK workshop were innovative design features not seen before and made me all the happier that developers were bringing their own ideas from the consumer IT world of mobility, simplicity, and social to the world of work apps in a smart way within an enterprise methodology too.  Partner wireframe exercise. Applying mobile design principles and UX design patterns means you've already productively making great usable apps! Next, over to Oracle ADF Mobile with it! One simple example from the design of a mobile field service app was that participants immediately saw how the UX and device functionality of the super UK-based app Hailo app could influence their designs (the London cabbie influence maybe?), as well as how we all use maps, cameras, barcode scanners and microphones on our phones could be used in work. And, of course, ADF Mobile has the device integration solutions there too! I wonder will U.S. workshops in Silicon Valley see an Uber UX influence (LOL)! That we also had partners experienced with Oracle Forms who could now offer a roadmap from Forms to Simplified UI and Mobile using ADF, and do it through through the cloud, really made this particular workshop go "ZING!" for me. • Does *every* project benefit from written specifications?

  I know this is holy war territory, so please read the question to the end before answering. There are many cases where written specifications make a lot of sense. For example, if you're a contractor and you want to get paid, you need written specs. If you're working in a team with 20 persons, you need written specs. If you're writing a programming language compiler or interpreter (and it's not perl), you'll usually write a formal specification. I don't doubt that there are many more cases where written specifications are a really good idea. I just think that there are cases where there's so little benefit in written specs, that it doesn't outweigh the costs of writing and maintaining them. EDIT: The close votes say that "it is difficult to say what is asked here", so let me clarify: The usefulness of written, detailed specifications is often claimed like a dogma. (If you want examples, look at the comments.) But I don't see the use of them for the kind of development I'm doing. So what is asked here is: How would written specifications help me? Background information: I work for a small company that's developing vertical market software. If our product is easier to use and has better performance than the competition, it sells. If it's harder to use, even if it behaves 100% as the specification says, it doesn't sell. So there are no "external forces" for having written specs. The advantage would have to be somewhere in the development process. Now, I can see how frozen specifications would make a developer's life easier. But we'll never have frozen specs. If we see in the middle of development that feature X is not intuitive to use the way it's specified, then we can only choose between changing the specification or developing a product that won't sell. You'll probably ask by now: How do you know when you're done? Well, we're continually improving our product. The competition does the same. So (hopefully) we're never done. We keep improving the software, and when we reach a point when the benefits of the improvements we've added since the last release outweigh the costs of an update, we create a new release that is then tested, localized, documented and deployed. This also means that there's rarely any schedule pressure. Nobody has to do overtime to make a deadline. If the feature isn't done by the time we want to release the next version, it'll simply go into the next version. The next question might be: How do your developers know what they're supposed to implement? The answer is: They have a lot of domain knowledge. They know the customers business well enough, so a high-level description of the feature (or even just the problem that the customer needs solved) is enough to implement it. If it's not clear, the developer creates a few fake screens to get feedback from marketing/management or customers, but this is nowhere near the level of detail of actual specifications. This might be inefficient for larger teams, but for a small team with low turnover it works quite well. It has the additional benefit that the developer in question often comes up with a better solution than the person writing the specs might have. This question is already getting very long, but let me address one last point: Testing. Like I said in the beginning, if our software behaves 100% like the spec says, it still can be crap. In fact, if it's so unintuitive that you need a spec to know how to test it, it probably is crap. It makes sense to have fixed, written tests for some core functionality and for regression bugs, but again, this is nowhere near a full written spec of how the software should behave when. The main test is: hand the software to a user who doesn't know it yet and tell him to use the new feature X. If she can figure out how to use it and it works, it works.

• ORM Persistence by Reachability violates Aggregate Root Boundaries?

  Most common ORMs implement persistence by reachability, either as the default object graph change tracking mechanism or an optional. Persistence by reachability means the ORM will check the aggregate roots object graph and determines wether any objects are (also indirectly) reachable that are not stored inside it's identity map (Linq2Sql) or don't have their identity column set (NHibernate). In NHibernate this corresponds to cascade="save-update", for Linq2Sql it is the only supported mechanism. They do both, however only implement it for the "add" side of things, objects removed from the aggregate roots graph must be marked for deletion explicitly. In a DDD context one would use a Repository per Aggregate Root. Objects inside an Aggregate Root may only hold references to other Aggregate Roots. Due to persistence by reachability it is possible this other root will be inserted in the database event though it's corresponding repository wasn't invoked at all! Consider the following two Aggregate Roots: Contract and Order. Request is part of the Contract Aggregate. The object graph looks like Contract->Request->Order. Each time a Contractor makes a request, a corresponding order is created. As this involves two different Aggregate Roots, this operation is encapsulated by a Service. //Unit Of Work begins Request r = ...; Contract c = ContractRepository.FindSingleByKey(1); Order o = OrderForRequest(r); // creates a new order aggregate r.Order = o; // associates the aggregates c.Request.Add(r); ContractRepository.SaveOrUpdate(c); // OrderAggregate is reachable and will be inserted Since this Operation happens in a Service, I could still invoke the OrderRepository manually, however I wouldn't be forced to!. Persistence by reachability is a very useful feature inside Aggregate Roots, however I see no way to enforce my Aggregate Boundaries.

• When am I ready for contracting work?

  What skills are required to work on a temp / contracting basis, and how does a developer know when they are ready to work in these circumstances? I have some colleagues who are suggesting contracting work is 'the way to go'; the pay is significantly better. It appears that when a permanent position pays (X times $10k) per year, the corresponding contract position pays almost $X per hour - which is close to twice as much. I look forward to doing this type of work as an experienced expert, but worry that by doing so right now I'd be turning away learning and development opportunities. My assumptions about contract work are the following: less / zero money invested on training and development less concern for job satisfaction and learning ("they won't be here in 12 months") possibly less concern about the overall quality of the project ("we won't be here in 12 months") There are similar questions on stack overflow at the moment but what I've really looking for is: What does the developer give up by moving to contract work? Is it preferable to have structured learning in a permanent position rather than seat-of-the-pants learning in a contract position? What skill leve should the contractor have before making the move? Is there still the same kind of growth in contracting that there is in permanent positions? Rightly or wrongly, I see this as a choice between $ (contracting) and learning / development (permanent). Is this fair?

• Can't change pivot table's Access data source - bug in Excel 2000 SP3?

  I have a set of Excel 2000 SP3 worksheets that have Pivot Tables that get data from an Access 2000 SP3 database created by a contractor who left our company. Unfortunately, he did all his work on his private area on the company (Novell) network and now that he has left us, the drive spec has been deleted and is invalid. We were able to get the database files restored to our network area by our IT Service Desk people, but we now have to re-link everything to point to our group area instead of the now-nonexistent private area. If I follow the advice given elsewhere on this site (open wizard, click 'Back' to get to 'Step 2 of 3', click 'Get Data...' I get a message that the old filespec is an invalid path and I need to check that the path name is invalid and that I am connected to the server on which the file resides. I then click on OK and get a Login dialog with a 'Database...' button on the right. I click this and get a 'Select Database' dialog which allows me to choose the appropriate database in its correct new location. I then click OK, which takes me back to the 'Login' screen. I can confirm that it has accepted my new location by clicking on 'Database...' as before and the NEW location is still shown. So far so good - but if I then click on OK I get two unhelpful messages - first I get one saying that Excel 'Could not use '|'; file already in use.' - although no other files are in use. Clicking on OK takes me back to the 'Login' dialog. Clicking OK again gives me the same message as before telling me that the OLD filespec is invalid (as if I hadn't changed anything) - but clicking on the 'Database...' button shows that the correct (NEW) database location is still selected. Can anyone tell me a way of using VBA to change the link information without having to spend hours fighting the PivotTable Wizard - preferably similar to this way you update an Access Tabledef:- db.TableDefs(strLinkName).Connect = strNewLink db.TableDefs(strLinkName).RefreshLink Thanks!

• Switching from Java to .NET from a career change point of view

  Could anyone share with me their experience with switching from Java to .NET from a career point of view? I've been a Java developer for 12 years and am just getting tired of how fragmented the Java world has become. For my liking, there's just too many frameworks, tools, application servers, etc.. And it seems each new tool just adds complexity and time to even the simplest of projects. I'm not trying to start any wars - I'm just giving you the reason I ask the main question. I've read a few books on .NET and have done one WebForms job. I love the integrated environment and would like to hear how others transitioned from Java to .NET. What I mean by that is did you do it somehow as a contractor or did you join a company as a beginner .NET developer with much Java experience? Personally, I'm ready to take the leap if I can figure out how to not lose too much income in the process (Senior Java developer to beginner .NET developer). I would really appreciate hearing your stories.

• SQL GUID Vs Integer

  Hi I have recently started a new job and noticed that all the SQL tables use the GUID data type for the primary key. In my previous job we used integers (Auto-Increment) for the primary key and it was a lot more easier to work with in my opinion. For example, say you had two related tables; Product and ProductType - I could easily cross check the 'ProductTypeID' column of both tables for a particular row to quickly map the data in my head because its easy to store the number (2,4,45 etc) as opposed to (E75B92A3-3299-4407-A913-C5CA196B3CAB). The extra frustration comes from me wanting to understand how the tables are related, sadly there is no Database diagram :( A lot of people say that GUID's are better because you can define the unique identifer in your C# code for example using NewID() without requiring SQL SERVER to do it - this also allows you to know provisionally what the ID will be.... but I've seen that it is possible to still retrieve the 'next auto-incremented integer' too. A DBA contractor reported that our queries could be up to 30% faster if we used the Integer type instead of GUIDS... Why does the GUID data type exist, what advantages does it really provide?... Even if its a choice by some professional there must be some good reasons as to why its implemented?

• Mutually beneficial IP/copyright clauses for contract-based freelance work

  I have a copyright section in the contract I give to my clients stating that I retain copyright on any works produced during my work for them as an independent contractor. This is most definitely not intended to place arbitrary restrictions on my clients, but rather to maintain my ability to decide on how the software I create is licensed and distributed. Almost every project I work on results in at least one part of it being released as open source. Every project I work on makes use of third-party software released in the same fashion, so returning the favour is something I would like to continue doing. Unfortunately, the contract is not so clear when it comes to defining the rights of the client in the use of said software. I mention that the code will be licensed to them, but do not mention specifics about exclusivity, ability to produce derivatives etc. As such, a client has raised concerns about the copyright section of my contract, and has suggested that I reword it such that all copyrights are transferred entirely to the client on final payment for the project. This will almost certainly reduce my ability to distribute the software I have created; I would much prefer to find a more mutually beneficial agreement where both our concerns are appeased. Are there any tried and true approaches to licensing software in this kind of situation? To summarise: I want to maintain the ability to license (parts of) the software under my own terms, independently of my relationship with the client; with some guarantee to the client that no trade-secrets or critical business logic will be shared; giving them the ability to re-use my code in their future projects; but not necessarily letting them sell it (I'm not sure about this, though...what happens if they sell their business and the software along with it?) I realise that everyone's feedback is going to be prefixed with "IANAL", however I appreciate any thoughts you might have on the matter.

• Can I keep git from pushing the master branch to all remotes by default?

  I have a local git repository with two remotes ('origin' is for internal development, and 'other' is for an external contractor to use). The master branch in my local repository tracks the master in 'origin', which is correct. I also have a branch 'external' which tracks the master in 'other'. The problem I have now is that my master brach ALSO wants to push to the master in 'other' as well, which is an issue. Is there any way I can specify that the local master should NOT push to other/master? 'external' should merge with other/master, but master should NEVER push to other/master. It's never gong to work.

• can upstart expect/respawn be used on processes that fork more than twice?

  I am using upstart to start/stop/automatically restart daemons. One of the daemons forks 4 times. The upstart cookbook states that it only supports forking twice. Is there a workaround? how it fails If I try to use expect daemon or expect fork upstart uses the pid of the second fork. When I try to stop the job nobody responds to upstarts SIGKILL signal and it hangs until you exhaust the pid space and loop back around. It gets worse if you add respawn. Upstart thinks the job died and immediately starts another one. bug acknowledged by upstream A bug has been entered for upstart. The solutions presented are stick with the old sysvinit, rewrite your daemon, or wait for a re-write. rhel is close to 2 years behind the latest upstart package so by the time the rewrite is released and we get updated the wait will probably be 4 years. The daemon is written by a subcontractor of a subcontractor of a contractor so it will not be fixed any time soon either.

• Total newb having SSH tunnel and remote MySQL access problems

  I don't often work with linux or need to SSH tunnel into remote MySQL databases, so pardon my ignorance. I'm using Windows 7 and am needing to connect to a remote MySQL instance on a Linux server. For months I had been using the HeidiSQL client application successfully. Today two things happened: the DB moved to a new server and I updated HeidiSQL, now I cannot log in to the MySQL server, when attempting I get this message from Heidi: SQL Error (2003) in statement #0: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) If I use Putty, I can connect to the server and get MySQL access through command line, including fetching data from the DB. I assume this means my credentials and address are correct, but do not understand why putting those same details into HeidiSQL's SSH tunnel info won't work. I also downloaded the MySQL Workbench and attempted to set up a connection through that client and got this message: Cannot Connect to Database Server Your connection attempt failed for user 'myusername' from your host to server at localhost:3306: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 0 Please: 1 Check that mysql is running on server localhost 2 Check that mysql is running on port 3306 (note: 3306 is the default, but this can be changed) 3 Check the myusername has rights to connect to localhost from your address (mysql rights define what clients can connect to the server and from which machines) 4 Make sure you are both providing a password if needed and using the correct password for localhost connecting from the host address you're connecting from From Googling around I see that it could be related to the MySQL bind-address, but I am a third party sub-contractor with no access to the MySQL settings of this box and the system admin is assuring me that I'm an idiot and need to figure it out on my end. This is completely possible but I don't know what else to try. Edit 1 - The client settings I am using In Heidi and MySQL Workbench I am using the following: SSH host + port: theHostnameOfTheRemoteServer.com:22 {this is the same host I can Putty to} SSH Username: mySSHusername {the same user name I use for my Putty connection} SSH Password: mySSHpassword {the same password for the Putty connection} Local port: 3307 {this is on the SSH settings tab and was defaulted to 3307 by Heidi, changing it to 3306 gives me a different error: SQL Error (1045) in statement #0: Access denied for user 'mySQLusername'@'localhost' (using password: YES)"} MySQL host: theHostnameOfTheRemoteServer.com {consensus seems to be I should use 'localhost' here} MySQL User: mySQLusername {which I can connect with once in with Putty} MySQL Password: mySQLpassword {which works once in with Putty} Port: 3306

When I receive the message it looks perfectly fine in my browser and I can read it. So far I have tried the following: Try a different browser, both IE11 and Google Chrome Check the browser encoding settings Check Yahoo Web Mail's encoding/font settings My only other guess is that the client used some weird font or formatting on the e-mail that is throwing the message body out of sync. Unfortunately for my family member, she is a contractor working with a medium-sized company that refuses to provide her with a domain e-mail address, so she is forced to conduct business this way. Simply asking the sender to use a more widely supported font wouldn't be an acceptable solution here. Any thoughts?

• Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

  I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

• A dusty server room

  Here's the story.. The owners of the building we lease office space from decided to do a renovation of the exterior. This involved in some pretty heavy work at the level where our server room is, including exchanging windows wich are fit inside a concrete wall. My red alert went off when I heard that they were going to do the same thing with our server room (yes, our server room has a window. We're a small shop with 3 racks. The window is secured with steel bars.) I explicity told the contractor that they need to put up a temporarily wall between our racks and the original wall - and to make sure that the temporary wall is 100 % air and water-tight. They promised to do so. The temporary wall has a small door in it, so that workers can go in/out through the day (through our server room, wich was the only option....). On several occasions I could find the small door half-way shut while working evenings/nights. I locked the door, and thought that they would hopefully get the point soon and keep the door shut. I even gave a electrician a mouthful when I saw that he didn't close the door properly. By this point - I bet that most of you get a picture of what happened. Yes, they probably left the door open while drilling in the concrete. I present you our 4 weeks old EMC VNX: I'll even put in a little bonus, here is the APC UPS one rack further away from the temporary wall. See the nice little landing strip from my finger? What should I do? The only thing that comes to mind is to either call all our suppliers (EMC, HP, Dell, Cisco) and get them to send technicians to check out all the gear in the server room, or get some kind of certified 3rd-party consulant to check all of it. Would you run production systems on this gear? How long? Edit: I should also note that our aircondition isn't exactly enterprise-grade, given the nature of our small room. It's just a single inverter, wich have failed one time before I started working here (failed inverters usually leads to water dripping out).

• Exchange-Server Query

  First, a little background. I've recently been taken on as a web and software developer for a small company, who has no other in-house IT support. They've been asking my opinion on lots of IT subjects that are quite far out of my comfort zone. I'm definitely not a network admin. Their IT consultancy contractor is pushing them to upgrade their dedicated exchange server, even though it seems like the one they currently have has a lot of life left in it and is running problem free. They say it's "coming to the natural end of it's life". They want to install a monster with a Xeon E5-2420, 32GB RAM, 2x 1TB HDDs, Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft Exchange 2010. They want to charge a small fortune for it. Basically, this system seems massively over the top seeing as it won't be doing anything else other than running as an exchange server for a company with less than 25 email accounts. My employers also have a file server system in-house that hosts three web apps, an SQL server, their local domain, print server and shared folders. That machine is using the same specs as the proposed new one, and it is barely using any of it's potential. I asked if Microsoft Exchange 2010 could be installed on their file server, but they said that MS Exchange can't run on the same system as an SQL server because for some reason they will eat up each others resources (even though the SQL server isn't touching 1% of the current system's CPU or RAM). My question is really, are they trying to rip my employers off? Could MS Exchange be installed on their other server (on a virtual instance or not), or does the old one even need replacing at all? Going with their current suggestion will cost the company in excess of £6k, and it seems entirely unnecessary. I apologies, because I know this is probably a little thin on details, but if I carry on I could end up writing a massive essay that no-one will want to read. I've been doing my research, but I'm not knowledgeable enough make any hard decisions. Let me know if you need any more details. Thank you for any help you can offer. I've successfully had MediaPlayer connect to an HTTP stream (as well as static files hosted on an HTTP server) but I'm wondering how one would go about accepting a stream from a UDP source. I've seen this and suppose a solution similar to that (where I download the stream via an independent UDP socket and then move the data to a MemoryBuffer that I then pass to MediaPlayer) is an option but I'm curious if a method already exists in the SDK, and if it does not, what other options do I have? • How to render a partial and and a javascript file in the same time in Rails ?

  Hi. My main intention is to keep the functionality independent form the Javascript, to have it gracefully degradable. Maybe I am trying to go where I want the wrong way but the main idea is: there are some jQuery UI tabs and when the user presses a link, a new tab is added corresponding to that action $("#tabs").tabs('add', "/groups", "My Groups"); the controller identifies the AJAX request and renders only the partial for that tab if request.xhr? render :partial => "index_tab" end at this point I would like the Javascript file associated with the /groups/index action to be executed as well, meaning the index.js.erb file in the groups folder. because of the "only one render" rule I couldn't think of a nice way to do it and I am in need of a fast solution. Could you please suggest me any other alogrithm/tool which is language independent which could achieve Statistical word alignment for parallel English Hindi Corpora and its Evaluation, some tools languages are best for certain languages.. Could one please tell me how true is that and if so could you please give me an example what would suite better for Asian languages like Hindi and what shouldn't I use for such languages.
