  As far as I'm concerned, Queen's song 'bohemian rhapsody' is one of the most popular songs all time. But for the purpose of this message you may replace this with another track. At the same time I think 60% of the digital-music listeners have this track. Sometimes we have multiple copies: different versions of the track, different devices, unwanted duplicates in download folders, itunes folders etc.. Wouldn't it be much smarter to store these songs only once? You can imagine various solutions for this. How would you accomplish this?   I have a bunch of audio files that are named .wav but it seems not all .wavs are created equal. For example: $ file * file1.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz file2.wav: Audio file with ID3 version 2.2.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo file3.wav: Claris clip art? file4.wav: Audio file with ID3 version 2.2.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo And for good measure, a non-wav: file5.m4a: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, iTunes AAC-LC I would like to convert all of these files to the format that file1.wav is: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz What is the proper set of arguments to pass to afconvert to make that happen?

• Sharing Windows Store apps between accounts

  In Windows 8 it seems natural to me that each person in a family has their own Microsoft Account with which they log in. If you pay for an app on the Windows Store, you can install that same app on several computers using the same Microsoft Account. Good. However, if several persons, in this case my children, each have their own account on the same computer, they do not get access to apps bought on a sibling's account, even if the app has been installed on the same computer. Bad. (Compare this to iOS where you are allowed have several iPhones with different iCloud-connected accounts but all using the same iTunes App Store account, which is perfect for a family where all can then use the same app which was bought just once) Is there any way to share apps between Microsoft Accounts (e.g. members of the same family)? Alternatively, is there a way to run apps that are installed on a computer when you are logged in with a Microsoft Account different than the one used when installing the app?

  Essentially my 5G iPod was cutting tracks off and generally misbehaving. So I did the following: 1) Use Diskwarrior - heavy directory fragmentation which it fixed; 2) Use iDefrag - some fragmentation but it kept halting as it couldn't move files; 3) Try to write out drive with Disk Utility - got a warning from DU so gave up before I started; 4) Completely restored using iTunes; 5) Reran Diskwarrior - still heavy directory fragmentation; 6) Reran iDefrag, still fragmentation although limited to two bands; The iPod is much quicker to traverse menus and no more track skipping. My question is this - is defragging worth it or does the heat generated by the process kill the drive and make it a self-defeating process. Anyone have any metrics/ figures? Clearly it's a bad idea for solid state drives like the nano & touch.

• Music tagging software more consistent than Tag&Rename?

  A few years ago I spent an insane amount of time using the excellent Tag&Rename program. However, I find that for random, inexplicable reasons, some music tools simply disregard my tags, drop or destroy the album art, or have strange handling around some characters. For example, "AC/DC" is poorly handled by most music players when I use Tag&Rename to write the tags. And if I write the tag in iTunes, Winamp seems to not like it, vice versa, and neither of those work with Amarok. Is there a piece of software that works like Tag&Rename but is more compatible, or is there a way to ensure Tag&Rename writes more compatible tags?

• Mac .flac player that organizes folder structure? Can Songbird write to a ntfs drive?

  I have a bunch of music in .flac format on my pc. I would like to put that music on an external drive which I can access from both my Mac and PC at work. I have the drive formatted in NTFS using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G drivers. Through Finder I write to the drive fine. If I go to Show Info I see that I have custom access. I am trying to use Songbird to play said .flac files. I have Folder Management turned on. When I try to import to Library it errors out and says make sure drive exists and is writable. This seems like a permissions issue but I do not see how I could change them. If anyone knows of a good .flac player for the mac that also organizes folder structures like iTunes please let me know. This and the ability to write to a NTFS drive is what I am looking for.

  Currently, I am using PandoraBoy to listen to my Pandora stations. In the preferences, it allows you to set global hotkeys to control playing, like/dislike, volume, stations, etc. What I would like to do is allow the built-in media keys on my MacBook Pro's keyboard (F7-F12: Previous, Play/Pause, Next, Mute, Volume Up, Volume Down) to control PandoraBoy like they do iTunes. Right now, I am using Command-F(7-12) to control it, but that requires me to hold down the "fn" and command keys Is there a way to bind these commands to the media keys without needing to function-shift them?

• OS X crops the screenshot when capturing a single, maximised window.

  Whenever I make a screen shot of just a single window that is maximised using the shortcut command + shift + 4 + space, it never accurately captures the full window. Instead, it just saves this: What is going on? Why has OS X started doing this? I have been using Snow Leopard for a while, so it is not like that is causing the problems directly. It is also not restricted to Safari. The same thing happens for iTunes, as well as others.

  By default, the function keys on my MacBook Pro control various hardware features and native operating system applications like the brightness of the LCD, Expose, or iTunes. I like these buttons and can use the fn button to take advantage of application Function keys when working with certain applications. Some service-type, background applications also have useful keyboard shortcuts. I tend to forget which keys are active at the moment and sometimes launch the wrong processes. Is there an application or operating system, native way of identifying all of the currently available keyboard shortcuts?

• Backup Client/Server Software that Syncs only the Delta?

  I have a co-located server, and a desktop computer. I push small things and large ammounts of small files (like my iTunes) into a JungleDisk cloud. If a few files change there, no big deal, the file gets re-uped. For larger files JungleDisk backup isn't helpful. Things like movies and VMware images that change a lot, but I want backed up. Just not to JungleDisk since that would cost me even more money. I am looking for a product, closed or open source (preferably open source) that will sync the change, or delta, to my personal server on a schedule. That way I can keep a copy of my larger things, without paying JungleDisk a ton more since they are in the range of many Gigabytes. Right now these few items are backed up over FTP, and take forever. Both the client and server are windows environments.

• Is there a media/music player program that has a "biased" shuffle?

  I know in iTunes and a few other apps you can get playlists for just "highly rated" songs, but that's not quite what I want. I want to hear the lower-rated stuff, too. If I didn't like the song at some level it wouldn't be in my library in the first place, and so even a one-star song is worth the occasional listen. However, I do want to hear five-star songs a lot more often than one-star songs, even though I think I have a lot more one-star songs in my music library. So does anyone know of media player software of plugin (preferrable free) that has a shuffle mode that is biased towards songs that are rated higher, without completely excluding those that are rated lower? Right now I prefer windows media player, so a plugin for that would be ideal, but I'm not married to media player, either. Any music software that will do this would be worth some attention.

  I'm on OS X and want to have a hotkey (e.g. Cmd-Opt-P) to play/pause Pandora. I've used Butler to set one up for iTunes, but can't find a comparable solution for Pandora. I'm open to any solution (including apps, AppleScripts, etc.) that would allow me to bind a hotkey to play/pause, and I'm willing to use a paid solution as well. What can I do? Solutions I've looked into and/or tried: Pandora Boy: but the keyboard shortcuts don't seem to work for me, despite following the instructions here. • Mount drive when symbolic link is accessed

  I have a MacBook Pro with two internal drives: an SSD and a slow rotational drive. On the rotational drive I keep heavy, rarely accessed files like movies, photos, etc. These are symlinked from the SSD, so applications like iPhoto and iTunes will still find everything where they expect. I don't usually have the rotational drive mounted because it's loud and mostly unused. Is there a way to mount it when the system tries to access data behind a symlink, then unmount it automatically later? (Intermediate *nix user, here, feel free to tell me I am asking for magic.) • Windows 7 x64 CD to MP3 ripper

  I'm trying to find a good, simple CD-to-MP3 ripper to copy my physical CD's to my computer's hard disk. I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 - and that appears to be a major problem. All the "usual" free- and shareware tools I've tried (CD-to-MP3, Visual MP3 and quite a few more) seem to have trouble with either 64-bit Windows, or with my HP CD/DVD built into my HP Compaq Elite 8100 machine. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I don't want to install a monster like iTunes - something really clean, small, simple would be fine. Free- or Shareware - if it works reliably and with good quality output, I'll be happy to register! Any hints are welcome!

• Kanji characters appear as boxes

  i'm having trouble with the display of japanese characters on Windows 8 Pro (English, 64-bit, updated regularly). They appear as boxes (picture) in windows explorer, windows menus (even in the language settings of control panel), iTunes and nearly everywhere else, besides web browsers. I was using windows 7 until now, and it didn't have any of these problems, and i'm using the same applications now, as i was using in windows 7. Sometimes (!) when i restart the machine the problem goes away, but that isn't a real solution. What i've tried so far: added japanese language to windows of course installed/uninstalled/reinstalled japanase language pack (didn't have any impact though) i've read in one of these superuser topics a possible solution, when i had to create a txt file on the desktop with a kanji in the filename - that also didn't work (but i honestly hope that hacking and tweaking an operation system released in 2012 can't be the solution to display kanjis..) Please give me any ideas, i'm a bit hopeless here, and don't want to spend my life installing operation systems..

• Ad-hoc connection between iPhone and Macbook Pro

  I sometimes find it useful to connect my iPhone to my Macbook Pro by creating an ad-hoc wireless network from the MBP and connecting to that from the iPhone. However, what I find is that sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. When it's not working the symptoms are usually that I see the ad-hoc SSID in the list of available networks on the iPhone, can connect to it from there (including entering my WEP key), and it shows up as the wifi network in use. However I don't get the wifi symbol in the taskbar (it remains as 3G) and attempting to use the connection (e.g. trying to connect to iTunes or Keynote using their respective Remote apps) fails saying that there is so wifi connection. I've tried rebooting both the iPhone and the MBP, recreating networks with different SSIDs and tried different channels - all to no avail! I'm especially puzzled that (a) sometimes it works just fine first time and (b) the Settings app seems to think its all connected fine. Is there anything else I should be trying?

• Suggestions for wireless adapter

  I recently purchased a desktop computer and it did not come with a wireless network card. I am currently using the Belkin Wireless G USB Adapter and it is a very sub par product. It has very slow response times and download speeds with just basic browsing and downloads podcasts through iTunes. Does anyone have a better suggestion for a wireless adapter? Should I go with another USB adapter or one that connects directly into the motherboard? I am current using Windows Vista 64 bit Home Premium.

• Rhythmbox - put a playlist on my iPod

  I have an old iPod nano and currently use iTunes in Windows to management. However, I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu. So far, iPod management is one major holdup. Besides being unable to easily manage podcasts, I also don't see a way to create a playlist and put it on my iPod. I can create a playlist on the computer in Rhythmbox, but I can't drag and drop it onto the iPod. I can create a playlist on the iPod itself, put I can't drag and drop songs from my library into it. If I right-click the songs, I can add them to playlists on the computer, but not on the iPod. How can I create a playlist of music in Rhythmbox and sync it to my iPod?

• Dock displays low-resolution icons

  Recently, I've noticed that the dock has been starting to display low-resolution icons in place of the former high-resolution icons for common apps like Stickies, Word, iTunes and Preview. Looking at the .icns file within each program, all copies of the icon are present within the file (high and low resolutions), but the dock refuses to display them, leaving some programs looking like this: Restarting doesn't stop this behaviour, nor does a killall Dock, nor removing the icon and replacing it in the dock. In Finder, the icons display normally. Does anybody know what may be causing this issue? Thanks!

But when i tested it, i dont get the path of the file requested to open using the application, instead i got the "psn_0_151589". I checked it for itunes, textedit, xcode and other applications. • Get songs off of Windows iPod and onto a Mac

  I have been using iTunes on a Dell running Windows XP to sync about 60 gigs of songs with my old school iPod. Well, the Dell's hard drive died the other day, and the only place that I have my music is on the iPod (I do have the CDs, but really don't want to have to re-rip 60 gigs of music). So, now I have a shiny new MacBook Pro. Is there a way to get my songs off of my iPod and onto the MacBook? I googled, and found Senuti. But, I'm leery of accidentally formating the iPod and losing my songs, and I can't tell if it is Snow Leopard compatible yet. Has anyone recently gone through this process? Please provide suggestions for copying songs from an iPod formated to work with Windows onto a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. Thanks!

• Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

  I'm looking for peoples opinion on wireless music streaming devices - something like this. I have an iTunes library hosted on an ubuntu server and I'm looking for something to allow me to listen to all the albums stored on it. Ideally, it should provide a good quality playback both over headphones and through speakers so that everyone can hear it. It doesn't need to be ultra-portable - being able to move the system and plug in a mains lead should be enough, so a single, integrated unit is preferable.
