• LINQ to SQL SubmitChangess() progress

  I'm using LINQ to SQLto import old DBF files into MSSQL. I'm reading all rows and adding them to database using ctx.MyTable.InsertOnSubmit(row) After reading phase is completed I have around 100 000 pending inserts. ctx.SubmitChanges() naturally is taking a long time. Is there any way to track progress of the ctx.submitchanges()? Can ctx.Log somehow be used for this purpose? Update: Is it possible to use ctx.GetChangeSet().Inserts.Count and track insert statements using the Log? Dividing ctx.SubmitChanges() into smaller chunks is not working for me, because I need transaction, all or nothing.   I use Python multithread to realize Quicksort. Quicksort is implement in a function. It is a recursive function. Each thread calls Quicksort to sort the array it has. Each thread has its own array that stores the numbers needs to be sorted. If the array size is smaller (<10,000). It runs ok. However, if the array size is larger, it shows the "maximum recursion depth exceed". So, I use setrecursionlimit () function to reset the recursion depth to 1500. But the program crash directly...

• dilemma about mysql. using condition to limit load on a dbf

  hi, I have a table of about 800 000 records. Its basically a log which I query often. I gave condition to query only queries that were entered last month in attempt to reduce the load on a database. My thinking is a) if the database goes only through the first month and then returns entries, its good. b) if the database goes through the whole database + checking the condition against every single record, it's actually worse than no condition. What is your opinion? How would you go about reducing load on a dbf?

• Saving gzipped string into Sqlite3 via Rails throws unrecognized token error

  Hi, I'm using rails 2.3 and I'm trying to compress (gzip) text that I'd like to save using ActiveRecord into a sqlite database. However, the compressed text isn't being saved b/c I get this type of error: SQLite3::SQLException: unrecognized token: "'x##U?#7 Any thoughts on what I can do to avoid this error? should I compress the text in some other fashion? should I save the data using some other method(s)?   Hey guys This is probably a dumb question - I'm using Jquery to validate the form. So the form elements have the class="required" attribute. input type="text" name="last_name" class="required"/ Now if i want to apply some css properties to the input fields of this form - how do I do that. I do not want to declare a general css for all input elements - I have declared the css as follows: input.form { color: #000; background: #fff; border: 2px solid #E1E1E1; font-size: 16pt; width:150px; } And I want to use it this way input class="form" type="text" name="last_name" class="required"/ But this wont work as there are two class attributes here. • Proper way to format date from database using javascript/jquery

  Hi all, I am calling my database which contains a datetime datatype. The date looks like this: 2005-05-23 16:06:00.000 I would like to display this in a table when a user selects a certain item from a list. I call my controller action and return Json of all the times and put them in a table. The problem is the date is completely wrong. What is displayed is this: /Date(1255470180000)/ The date that is returned isn't even parsable (which I don't want to do anyway) so I can't even get the data if I wanted to. Any ideas?

• Disk-based caching of dynamic images in IIS 7

  I'm writing an image server which needs to handle a relatively large number of concurrent requests (~5,000). The images being served are dynamically scaled down and cropped based on per-image specifications, which are queried from a database. The number of images is rather large, so an in-memory cache isn't viable (thrashing would most definitely occur). I'm using native caching in IIS 7 to avoid hitting the ASP.NET app which generates the images on-the-fly. I've looked around, but I couldn't find a simple way to configure IIS to store the cache on-disk -- is there such an option, or would I need to roll my own? I'd rather avoid placing the generated images in a public folder, so they can be served statically, since I would prefer to invalidate the cache entries using a query parameter (last-edit time from the database,) which doesn't seem possible to reconcile with static caching. I would love to get some feedback on this!

  Can someone point me to where I can download English dictionary as a txt or xml file. I am building a simple app for myself and looking for something what I could start using immediately without learning complex API. Support for synonyms would be great, that is it should be easier to retrieve all the synonyms for particular word. It would be absolutely fantastic if dictionary would be listing British and American spelling of the words where they are differ. Even if it would be small dictionary (few 000's words) that's ok, I only need it for small project. I even would be willing to buy one if the price is reasonable, and dictionary is easy to use - simple xml wold be great. Any directions please.

• ado.net slow updating large tables

  The problem: 100,000+ name & address records in an access table (2003). Need to iterate through the table & update detail with the output from a 3rd party dll. I currently use ado, and it works at an acceptable speed (less than 5 minutes on a network share). We will soon need to update to access 2007 and its 'non jet' accdb format to maintain compatability with clients. I've tried using ado.net datsets, but updating the records takes hours! We process 5-10 of these tables per day - so this cannot be a solution. Any ideas on the fastest way to update individual records using ado.net? Surely we didn't take such a hugh backward step with ado.net? Any help would be appreciated.

• What is a reasonly priced map API solution for a startup?

  I've been developing my application with Google Maps and the wonderful rails plugin for it, expecting to find that when I put my app into production that the commercial licensing wouldn't be too expensive. Then I found out it cost $10,000/year, no exceptions so far. http://www.47hats.com/2009/07/google-maps-the-10k-gotcha/ That's not a terrible price to pay for unlimited usage when your site becomes successful, but for those of us trying to build something from the ground up, that's a hefty price to pay. I've looked at Bing and Yahoo but they're very wishy-washy with what ballpark the pricing is. That on top of the fact I have to ditch my nice rails plugin YM4R for Google maps... Is anyone out there using a map API solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get started with in a commercial aspect? I don't mind not using a plugin, I just need something that will work and is cost affordable in the beginning.

• Hierarchical Data in MySQL is fast to retrieve?

  i've got a list of all countries - states - cities (- subcities/villages etc) in a XML file and to retrieve for example a state's all cities it's really quick with XML (using xml parser). i wonder, if i put all this information in mysql, is retrieving a state's all cities as fast as with XML? cause XML is designed to store hierarchical data while relational databases like mysql are not. the list contains like 500 000 entities. so i wonder if its as fast as XML using either of: Adjacency list model Nested Set model And which one should i use? Cause (theoretically) there could be unlimited levels under a state. And which is fastest for this huge dataset? Thanks!

• Start multiple processes of a dll in delphi

  I have a "ActiveX library" project created with Delphi 2007. The library interface return XML data based on input values. This is then used by a PHP script that displays the data on a web page. This works great! The problem is that i can only run one instance of the dll process on the server. However, for security reasons, each of my customer should be able to access their own process of the dll (because the dll is always connected to only one database). Also, because of the way the delphi code is built, it doesn't support multiple threads. (It's a 100 000+ lines project using lots of singleton classes) Is there a way of starting several instances of the same dll? Is there a better way of transferring XML data from delphi to PHP? Sorry for the longish question, any help is appreciated (ps. I know the delphi code should be refactored, but this would mean 6 months of "circular reference" -hell :)

  I am new to culling. On a first glance, it seems that most occlusion culling algorithms are object-level, not examining single meshes, which would be practical for game rendering. What I am looking for is an algorithm that culls all meshes within a single object that are occluded for a given viewpoint, with high accuracy. It needs to be at least O(n log n), a naive mesh-by-mesh comparison (O(n^2)) is too slow. I notice that the Blender GUI identifies the occluded meshes for you in real-time, even if you work with large objects of 10,000+ meshes. What algorithm is used there, pray tell?

• CSS Container not growing with grid?

  Hi, I have a container background defined in CSS like this; .container { background:#fff; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; position: relative; width:970px; border:1px solid #000; padding:5px 10px; } The problem is I have a jqGrid put in the bottom of the container (near the bottom edge) and when its initially drawn it does fit inside the container panel and looks correct. Something like this (please pardon my non-l33t graphic skillz): But then when I populate the grid with rows it outgrows the container and it looks really tacky, something like this (I circled the original container background edges): I am sure its something I am doing wrong with the CSS. Any advice would be appreciated. EDIT: The problem isn't the width its the height of the container being overlapped by the new height of the now populated grid

• Java Time Zone When Parsing DateFormat

  I had code that parses date as follows: String ALT_DATE_TIME_FORMAT = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSZ"; SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat( ALT_DATE_TIME_FORMAT); Date date = sdf.parse(requiredTimeStamp); And it was working fine, suddenly, this stopped working. It turns out an admin made some config changes on the server and the date is currently being returned as "2010-12-27T10:50:44.000-08:00" which is not parse-able by the above pattern. I have two questions: The first would be what pattern would parse the date being returned by the JVM in the format above (specifically, just '-08:00' as the time zone)? And second, where exactly would one change such settings on a linux RHEL 5 server so that we are aware of such changes in the future?
